Love this - just an added note on the coaching certification on soccer (been coaching 15 years) - Certifications, Licenses, Diplomas, ect… does not a qualified coach make. Do not get me wrong, education is the most important thing for a coach to have when it comes to the game (how to train, emphasis on development vs. winning), things of that nature. I have seen certified coaches with more experience than me make the same mistakes that a USSF 'F' parent volunteer coach make. What it comes down to is the education and direction of the coach for soccer coaches, especially here in the States. I'm based in Louisiana, so I'm curious any other soccer coach in different areas in the USA have similar observations? Or have better pathways for coaches that I can bring to Louisiana? Love Geno and his philosophy - apply a lot of it to my programs.
It interesting how he calling out skill coaches and he himself always recruiting best talent with a skills in the country where "dirty" work already been done by other coaches. Team concept would never work if you do not have tools to make it work. He talking about ground work fundamentals like it nothing of his concern and he above it, yes he is about it because he only recruiting best of the best. Geno mention certification and from what I know in today world everyone need it and for every possible thing out there. Not like he have any when he first got assistant job.
Pretty much, studied his work. Great coach but way better personal manager and more then just capable scout. What is your point ? He become politician not a coach anymore that is my point if you fail to see that, my bad.
"Dirty work" was NOT already done by high school coaches. His players have a LOT more to learn when they get to the college level. How to play as a team because they are playing with others on their level, they are not just big fish in a little pond anymore, and how to play defense. HE teaches the fundamentals, something they didn't get enough of when they were just jacking up shots in high school. Look what he did with Kara Wolters. She wasn't recruited much out of high school, the school where she initially wanted to go didn't recruit her, and she became one of the best centers in the country at the time. (Of course, Chris Daily had a lot to do with that). He makes good players a lot better. That's why good players with the right mentality want to go to UCONN. Ask his peers whether they think he is a good coach or not. He's not a "politician". (That doesn't even make any sense). Yes, a lot of the players he gets now are some of the best in the country, but a lot of other schools get that, too, and they don't have the success rate that UCONN has.
