Williams Stargate arcade : 100 million!

- Here is a video of the last 200K of my game of stargate that shows the bonus ship bug for the very first time on this game. 100 hours of (paused) play! This bug only happens between 99.9 million and 100 million. This was proven also by the great Ken House on Robotron.
Notice how when the score rolls over (8 mins, 52 seconds) that it doesnt show the score properly until you lose a life or clear the wave. It mustn't wipe out the left hand digits of the score until then.
Most masterful use of inviso that I've ever seen.
i sucked at Defender and Stargate but man i sure loved watching guys that's could shred at this game.
Charles Salmon HAHAHAHA, SHED????? REALLY???
Phillip Henson Not Shed. Shred! That's what we called 100 years ago when i was a kid
I love it when people like Philip Henson make complete asses of themselves.
I was shit at this game. .interestingly, Stargate was a bit of a flop for Williams
@@charlessalmon3673 Guys who could SHRED Defender, Stargate, and Robotron seemed to be more popular with the ladies.
The one thing about this game that's different from almost all video games is that it doesn't get progressivley harder. I was one of those kids that could stay on it indefinitely also. I'd actually rest for several minutes at a time while letting my ships get killed because I'd bank hundreds of them. Fatigue is the biggest competition once you get the flow of this game. I sure do miss it though. I played Defender a week ago for the first time in 30 years, and it was just like I never walked away from that game. But Stargate was so much more fun; even the sounds are better.
Pettis Mulgrew you can set the game to get progressively harder. Check out my 99/99 defender vids. Well fast!
Great game!
This brought back a lot of memories for me. In 1981, my father purchased a Stargate from a local arcade when I was about 9 years old. It took me awhile to get good, I used to cover up the screen with a piece of cardboard, so you could only see your radar. That helped me tremendously.
Also, inside the cabinet, there were 3 red buttons on the other side of the coin-mech. You could change all the settings from getting an extra life and/or smart bomb every 4,000 points or so. If I remember correctly. Sorry to say, the Stargate was given to a cousin for free about 17 years ago. The condition was a 10/10.
John S wow! weird strategy that. whatever works i suppose!
Absolutely LOVED Stargate! Every machine in my city had my initials for the top 10 players. I had to play with leather driving gloves because of the callouses that would build up between me thumb and index finger from the joystick. 1st time I racked it over a million I was on mushrooms. After 22 hours I walked away and gave the free ships to some kids watching me. Man, do I miss that game. For 1981, the graphics and gameplay were awesome. I was actually banned from many arcades cause I could play forever on a quarter! Thanks for sharing! Brings back great memories!
David Linge You can still play defender and stargate on your PC. The game you are watching is on my PC.
Paul Spriggs how you get it on your pc? and what controller do you use?
Peter Higbie Can i have your email address peter. Ill send you all the details bud.
+Paul Spriggs Hey man, tks for upload some great memories of the 80's! I do remember how bad I loved to spent time on arcade games. Congrats bro, you are an "Stargate Animal"! Could you pls send me info of how to download retro arcade games like this on my PC? I would really apreciate it. aginvsac@gmail.com greetings from the south of america!
+Paul Spriggs can you email me the info on how you play stargate online and tell me the controller you use. I LOVE PLAYING STARGATE. my highest score was 5 million on a playstation 1. my email is ewat54@yahoo.com.
Wow Paul!!! I knew that at 990,000 on Defender everything you shoot gives you an extra man and smart bomb and after I rolled it it went to 0 and didn't give you anymore extra men or smart bombs. I had no idea that Stargate did the same thing. That's because I never saw anyone get to 99,990,000 before. Bravo from a fellow Defender master, good job Paul. I knew a guy named Mitch Stokely from Shreveport Louisiana that played for 36 hrs at the 7-11 but had to quit to go to work or some lame reason. haha. Can't remember his score. I know it wasn't close to 100 million though.
I've always said this game had the best sound effects but you make it sound awesome!!..I never seen that level of play... would like to see someone play like that on the arcade version
This is the arcade version! Identical mate
I used to play at that level.
One time in one session with one quarter, I played 6 hours straight, 12 million.
Thanks for the blast from the past, Paul! You are an excellent player. Brought back memories of my late teen years; most of which I'd spent in the arcades, and perhaps a total estimated $6000 I guiltily admit. Williams and Atari had most of the titles I was attracted-to back in that era.
This one in particular was close to heart, as I'd played to just over 35m while in a local convenience store (on the original full-sized cabinet version), back on Labor Day weekend in 1982. I believe the poor store worker was fired after that as she didn't receive prior permission from corporate to let me stay in the store throughout the 35 hours it took, but she was happy to let me go for it, and as a bonus, her store got a little radio (or?) TV coverage as they gave me a short interview. Wish I could find that article now ;). I do remember walking away and taking 5 minutes per hour for food and facilities breaks, given all the ships in storage. Was quite surprised when I accidentally ran over the 255 ships-limit at around 12 hours. "OMG, I have no ships left!". You can imagine the ensuing flagrant use of smart bombs...
AWESOME ! Good Job, Best game Ever with Colors, Sounds, Everything. ALWAYS Loved Stargate, couldn't ever play it worth a Crap but never the Less. Awesome !
You're the best Stargate pilot I've ever seen~ I was 16 when this came out in 1983 & couldn't fly nearly this well.
It’s part of my memory since I was played the NES version of this game.
That arcade game has never been in Taiwan as a Taiwanese!
And now I am playing the arcade version on the MAME arcade emulator.
Thanks for the playing! That’s a great play!
That was a great game, I remember it well. Fantastic gameplay man !
Omg I used to play this for hours until I had blisters...a master at work!!! Wonderful
Blisters, Count I had calluses, and I wasn't good.
Got fired in 1982 as a grocery store bagger playing this. Would cuss out the machine, shake it and an old lady didn't like my words. Made me smile all the way thru your play. Would LOVE to own one. Great video, thanks for the memories.
just a bad game luv it wish had 1!
Joe Randle I play this on my pc mate. it's free to download. check out Mame. you can download the emulator and I can email u the Stargate rom. or join Facebook page called "Williams defender players unite" and it's downloadable from there. We have over 850 defender fanatics including Larry demar who wrote the game.
Man I miss this game. Played it a lot in the early 80s, then bought a full size arcade game after college for my house. That house and the game are long gone now, but miss them both. Still can here the opening audio when you start at wave 1. Love that sound. You're the King of Stargate, Paul!
Im playing on my PC sir. Get it downloaded via mame and you are good to go.
Oh, man I am behind the times. I do recall back in the late 90s there was a site that I could play it on, but the keyboard arrow keys were a beast to use. What type of game controller are you using?
I used to use one of these with a USB adaptor. Got a better one now but back then I used this

You are seriously taking me back to 1983 (when I was 16)~ but you are WAY better than I ever was. Rock on Paul~
thanks buddy. been playing almost 40 years so that may explain a lot 😀
if there was EVER a real Star Wars you would wan't this guy, as a fighter pilot lol
Don't get cocky kid..
I am in total awe, my friend! I used to play Stargate at college in 1982 - thought I was good at 600,000, however... I've just watched your video :-) !!
thanks bud 😀
Same here and i always thought that i was really good im glad they weren't around where i was playing
Myself and friends we could play but not like that.
Loved this game! put about $2000 into it between 1982 and 1983...
Is that all? Shameful. 3 grand at least surely??? :)
Me too Brandon & same years. It's the best money I ever spent
Real Talk!
my dad invented in and left me millions i would like to repay you the $2000
stargate. programmed 1981 by Eugene Jarvis and Larry de mar
I never understood when you'd want to enter the stargate
Free hyperspace if in trouble. Good way to get to an abducting humanoid. Warp to later screens earlier on also
If you entered the Stargate holding a certain number of humanoids, you would warp 4 levels if I recall.
I was this sick at Galaga like this. Kept playing past a million points til I got sick of playing, or the game tilted and reset at about stage 120. Ah... the 80's memories: Galaga; Defender; Stargate; Galaxian; Gyruss; Tempest; Zaxxon; Moon Patrol; Centipede; Gauntlet; Quartet 2; Karate Champ; Rampage; Double Dragon; Shinobi, Street Fighter, and so many more.
You forgot the best ever... ROBOTRON 2084
100 hours is about right (30 min +/- per million). This is one amazing score (even though pausing was used). It tops the TG score by 29M. TG has a 71M+ and on MAME it's 10M+. I never tried to see what happens past 9,999,975 because back in the 80's, I stopped on purpose at that exact score so I can put my name for the top spot on the game. Just like I did on Defender. The only difference is that Williams allowed for another digit in the score so you could see your score past 999,975. Not like Defender. It just rolls over. You have to keep track of your rollovers for sure.
So my understanding is that the 1st digit in the score (10 millionths place) is "off the screen" like that of Galaga on the player one side if I'm correct. There seems like there's enough room to show all 9 digits though. So did your score actually roll over after 9,999,975? If so, you would have to keep track of your rollovers up to the 100M mark.
Here's a new challenge for you Paul. Play on the player 2 side and see if the game will show a "9th" digit. I figured this out on accident, playing a friend doubles on Galaga back in the 80's. Since then, I never play on the player one side unless I'm only planning on getting a score of 999,990 so I can take 1st on the game and put my initials. :)
i was a teen when this game first came out. it was BRUTALLY hard to get a respectable score. this guy is a master and makes it look easy.
been playing 40 years bud 😀
Defender I was pretty good at back in the day but never at Stargate... just WOW..hats off to you!
Paul, you play the game way better than I ever could. Much respect!
Thank you sir😀
Excellent use of the invisibility cloak Paul. That is definitely why I never mastered Stargate, but I did master Defender. It too had a bug, it was between 990,000 and 1,000,000. Everything you would hit was a free ship and smart bomb. I would be careful to hit low point items because after 1,000,000 you wouldn't get another free ship and smart bomb until like 250,000 or so (it seemed to vary). I played in the Arcades in 1980 and 81 at the University of Cincinnati and then the University of Akron after that. The typical strategy for defeating Defender was to kill all the little astronaut guys except for one, and protect him. Kept Mutants at a minimum. Another fun thing to do was to try to collect ALL the little guys. The graphics and alien ships would become very sluggish then (too much graphical rendering for the processor back then), and the Baiters would materialize very slowly and I could kill one after another after another. Ah, the memories of the Golden Age of Arcades. Calhoun Hall, U of Cincinnati. My initials were DIM. My friend from Dayton was CJJ, not that he will ever read this. But if he does... lol. Peace!
+mdimascio Thank you sir. The bonus ship bug happens on stargate, but you have to score 100 million, not 1 million!
The first time you score in "Happy Zone" [the score range where you get a bonus for every time you score], 10,000 [default Bonus Ship Level] is added to Next_Bonus_At [990,000 for Defender and 99,990,000 for Stargate], which overflows to 0. Now each time you score, your score is more than 0, so again, 10,000 is added, and so on, until your score also overflows. Then you won't get any bonuses until your score reaches Next_Bonus_At. This is why the bonus drought varies; it depends on the number of times you score during "Happy Zone". You don't gain anything in the long term, you just get your bonuses early, but you will have to earn them all before you get bonuses as usual ... until you reach "Happy Zone" again.
Just make sure you don't overflow your ships or Smart Bombs (255+1 becomes 0). Inviso appears to have protection from overflow.
Your awesome at this. Defender and this one are the best. It's fun to watch someone so good.
thanks. nearly been playing for 40 yrs
This reminds me of when I hung out with my younger brother at verious video game outlets/stores, and we played this game for hours.
He would rack up a ton of extra ships/bombs, while I'd watch him tear through the on screen enemies.
Bought a hand held/plug & play, but it's not quite the same, you need a solid base for all the physical forces exerted on the controls. I strapped it down, still, it's not the same.💪🏻😆👍🏻
yep. I played this using a playstation arcade stick on my pc. glued to a wooden board 😀
Excellent play.
I own a Defender game.
The moment I put in the first quarter and the sound it made, I was hooked.
Owning the game enables to replay that quarter drop sound again and again.
Would be a great sound in a heavy metal song.
To make Defender a challenge for me, I also play cross hand. Haha
Here we go!!!
Thanks Paul - for taking the time to do it... I knew- you had it in you... :D
thank you jim
Defender and Stargate, my all time favorites in arcade, coin op machines. I really like the Tournament modes for the world record. The guy playing this, really did a great job of making use of inviso. World class player. Good Stuff.
thanks 😊
Kudos to you for having the stamina to play for 100 hours! And here I thought having to play roughly 10 hours just so that I can get 9999975 on my own Stargate's high score table was taxing enough...
I love the soundeffects and music of this game.i have not heard any dubstep artist sample this yet.awesome skills.clocked that shit.
There really isn't any game play "music" to sample, just sound "effects"
That is a good idea Ahau, the game needs some music like spyhunter.
I'll say it again as I did 5 years ago when I found my original comment. This is still an incredible score regardless of where it was paused or not. It's not about testing endurance, it's about the amount of skill that goes into getting a score as big as you did. So wait, you're saying that there's a score bug similar to Defender and Stargate on Robotron?! My best on Robotron is only 20 million but I ended that game on purpose because I ran out of time. I also noticed in my previous comment from 5 years ago that my math was off. It's 1 hour per million instead of 30 minutes per million which makes sense. 100 hours was 100 million. It's been a long time since I had a 10-hour game of Stargate and put up a score for 9,999,975 as the top spot. Definitely in the early to mid 80s. After that it was only a few million here and there and then I would just put my initials. I had a couple of minutes to spare one day about a year ago and put up almost half a million on the one near me. Pretty much just to take over the top spot, but I definitely want to do a 10 million in the next month or so. So how many extra men and smart bombs do
you think you had when you ended your game?
Haven't had this much fun since doing it myself way back in 1983...
you got 100 million? rolled it ten times?
Yah,paul..this is nothing new. My gen was tearing g these games up back in the day!! Doing patterns on Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man was the rage, and multi million point games was the norm. I still own a copy of donkey Kong jr coin op that I tear up on the regular...
i was doin 940 000 points about a long long time ago lol just like the guy playing! wow that brings back memories!
My favorite all time arcade game...
Such an intense game, astonishing a few people can play for this long at a time!
Hey Paul, Try this. Near the end of a round be carrying an alien. Then right as you kill the last enemy set the alien down on land at the same time... See what happens. It's not a hidden trick, or bug, but it's cool anyways...
Doesn't work on Defender, only on Stargate.
Done that a thousand times
Oh, ok. You are a real veteran player dude... lol
Dtoolman for those of us who don't know and are nowhere near a Stargate machine, what does it do?
You get a 2000 point bonus instead of 500.
YES! That’s the coolest sound effect EVER! I’m looking for this sound as a ringtone!
Hi Paul, we spoke years ago I have just seen Refender and its awesome saw your name in the credits. I shall find the home page for Refender as I would love to know its history....still amazing to watch !.....cheers.
Great stuff.. most I ever got was 200k on Defender and I think 220k on stargate. Love those games. Thinking about getting a stargate cab.
Now that's how you play the game. Great work.
I have never commented on a video before I am51.first comment defender rolled over at 1 million. I remember my shock and relief when Stargate rolled at 10 million. To my brothers who could really play ,do you remember the shock of rolling your ships over to zero ?brutal! Then ro?l?in your smart bombs And inviso over .me K never rolled it without inviso, but I did roll it without smart bombs or warping to win a bet.I could tell immediately this guy could play .thank you for posting this brought back o ton of find memories.BTW did you really get 100 million or just 10 million .if memory serves it took me
45 min or so per million 70 to 80 hours for 100 million I myself, 23 million and change . Again thanks for putting this up.

Most common site in Port Huron MI circa1982
yep. 100 mill. rolled it ten times as the bonus ship bug dont happen til 100 mill
Flashback awesomeness! Those DAMN C aliens and their baby spawn!
Wow, and I thought my 48 million was pretty awesome. Well done! Inviso is the key for sure.
Bad for defender play though! after 100 hours of stargate play, i went back to defender and sucked. Kept reaching for inviso on defender instead of dodging stuff. Bad move!

Thanks for the memories
Incredible. Just started playing Defender in a local retro arcade but the thrust button is temperamental, making a difficult game near on impossible.
Not good bud. You need to play it on your PC bud like i do. Much more reliable
Paul Spriggs They're getting it sorted so it'll be fine, plus way more fun in an authentic environment.
Impressive coding. No blitter, just a cpu scrolling and moving all that objects!
Yes, the 6809 CPU has some useful instructions to help with that: (a few lines [with added comments] from the code - github.com/historicalsource/defender )
D2BE 35 36 PULS A,B,X,Y ; pull 6 bytes (6 pairs of pixels) from system stack pointing at ROM gfx data
D2C0 36 36 PSHU A,B,X,Y ; push those 12 pixels onto user stack pointing into screen RAM
D2C2 33 C9 01 06 LEAU $106,U ; point to bottom of next column of pixel pairs in screen RAM
These 3 instructions are simply repeated for each column of pixel pairs.
I think this out-performs anything that the 6502 and Z80 can manage, as they lack multi-register read/write instructions (and 2 stacks)!
Robotron has even more objects on the screen, so a blitter was added to increase the throughput.
The blitter allowed for a large object in Sinistar.
@@Lord-Sméagol True, Robotron had a blitter.
That was some kick ass playing Paul! Sounds good have you got it hooked up to surround sound lol
I once turned a Stargate game over at however many points and it started over again. This is my very favorite video game of all time, if they weren't so expensive I'd find one for my man cave, but they're just too much money. It's been 30 plus years since battled with one, but I'll bet I could get on one today and it'd be like no time has passed, it gets in your bones.
stargate rolls at ten million. 10 hour game. Defender rolls at a million tho
@@MegaSpriggsy Man we're talking the early eighties here, the memory get a little hazy decades later. It was definitely Stargate and not Defender, I'm sure it took a while, but it completely started over at stage one. By then I'd been playing the game for a good while so I was well versed as a player. I still LOVE that game, I play it all the time if I had one though. I miss Stargate, greatest video game ever.
@@robertkess9907 to start the game over from wave 1 you need to get to wave 256. that will take a coupla hours bud. have you not considered playing it on your pc/laptop? You will notice im playing it on my pc bud 😀
@@MegaSpriggsy OK bud.
Not sure which *version* of Stargate you played back then but I can assure you that with original ROMset Stargate does not roll over at 1 million; my high score table is proof of that as it is populated with scores well over 1 million (e.g., 1654500).
I played this game back in 82 and 83, and then I did not see it until it was in the form of a multi Cade machine in 2003. It was at a pizza parlor and the owners of the place would see me only spending a quarter.
Eventually they fixed the game to where every 25k would give you a new life and they sped up the pace of the game. Also, the green baiters came out early in each wave, therefore I was barely able to break 100 k after the machine was fixed.
Never broke a million on Stargate, but I came close. However, on Defender, I easily broke a million.
I’ll never forget back in 82, after several hundreds of quarters, trying to learn the game, I warped for the first time. Then after that I got better to where I warped to the fire bomber showdown, going from 1 to 4, 4 to 7, and 7 to 10. Eventually, I avoided warping, and would try to rescue as many humanoids as possible during each wave sans the dogfights and the showdowns.
There were times when I would go back to Defender after playing Stargate for a while, and I would think there was an invisible button on Defender which there was not.
Thanks for posting and it brings back memories of a simpler time.
thanks bud. after this game i sucked at defender for ages. kept reaching for that inviso button!
fkn excellent play, Paul. excellent.
Amazing play! The highest score I could ever manage was about 350,000 points or so. The enemies I struggled to deal with the most were the Firebombers and Space Guppies. I did find though that Mutants were easier to deal with on Stargate - simply hit Inviso and they crash into you and die!
inviso is how i deal with firebombers!
I did try that, but found that I just wasted Inviso, as I wasn't skilful enough to steer into them (obviously the Firebombers tend to move away from you rather than track you).
@@jasonhart751 i tend to go under them then ram em as their lateral movement left to right seems restricted.
Man..I never got the hang of dealing with those saucers..they were thr dreadest😎
Someone’s got some MAD skills!!!
Best I ever did in the arcade in 1982 was 2.5 million!!!
This is awesome! I Love This Video Game :)
I went for the world's record on this game in 1982 at Freddie the freeloaders in Victoria when I was 16 and racked up 31 million points in 29 hrs on level 10.... and haven't looked for it since... even though this game was 2 dimensional, the video gamers of today would probably have some trouble with it... and I haven't seen one since... Once you learn the patterns of each enemy it becomes natural. You have to use the radar too. Mastering the reverse button is a must.

Awesome vid
Dude is a beast..
Not bad, not too bad at all. You're okay.
At 8:58, your score was 9993375. That's 9,993,375. You missed 100 million by 90 mil. Not to knock your play, though. You are the best I've ever seen.
for crying out loud. I ROLLED IT 10 TIMES!
My 100 like......super awesome!
Great game and great player.
Please be patient if this has been answered, but how do you pause the arcade game? Of was this in a MAME box?
mame sir
N.I.B. StarGate Champion of Middle Tennessee!!!!
Damn. This guy is kicking ass.
thank you sir
With the right weed, this game can become you.
Mingy Comumbus funnily enough...........
Mingy Comumbus We played it on microdots (masculine acid) back in the early 80's. it was truly epic!!!
you are the man
nice job !
Ha haaa! Watching again as of the FB thread, not the mame arcade archive post. It's just incredible, dude.
Supreme as fuck. How the fuck...
I thought the same watching some guy play bomb jack 😉
@@MegaSpriggsy Is this heaven? Or just De-Ja vooooo?

@@MegaSpriggsy I understand. I have to warn people, I can't help it. I'm fed up with it, too. It should not exist.
Nice one, budski.
Take a look at "Operation Fishbowl". That does exist ;)
those munchies were hard to kill on the screen
Ur the Master at Stargate Wow u. Rock. Man
Williams Electronics had the best sound effects
I could clock Defender usually but to my eternal regret I never played this in arcades, never found one in northern England in the 80s and I sure as shit looked :-)-was 10 man pick up possible on sheets one/two?
You can pick up 10 men, and set them down on the planet, but the game will only freeze for a short time; the '500's have been forced to always move, so they will soon go off screen.
Here is a brief freeze: ruclips.net/video/cB9LqDJK3f4/видео.html
I never saw this one in an arcade in the UK - only ever played a PC version.
They used to have a couple in the Las Vegas arcade on Wardour Street, Soho, London. Also saw it in a seaside arcade once. But it was hard!!
Great gameplay!
Thank you sir
To me Stargate is the best arcade game ever and Defender is the only thing that comes close. I'd kill for a Stagate, just found a "partycade" or tabletop Defender with authentic controls from Arcade 1 up. It isn't Stargate but it's close as I've gotten in 35 years, I'm holding out hope they make a proper Stargate. When they do I'll pounce and then upgrade.
I'd also love a stargate. this was played on my pc. I do have a loan of a defender and robotron tho
Bro where u from? I swear watching u play is like watching myself I been playing since I was 11 I'm 48 still can play the same when I was lil fella I never been beaten in stargate but I believe me n u will give each other some competition I would love to play you I'm from Detroit I just play last Sunday when I took my sons the arcade they have all the old school game.
The real deal. I can tell this is skill and you haven't tweaked the difficulty level. My high was 4million in the 80s. Best game of all time.
Not many people could play it.
