AND very important side note to this awesome video: YOU DON`T NEED A STYLE
honestly.... a few months ago I felt really iffy about all my art because it didn´t seem to have a particular style, but then I realized: It does not need it!
If you do a lot of different art (like I do) you might make each piece in a different style and that is okay!
I started to embrace it! I envision what I want to create and choose how / in which style I wanna do the piece, because not every piece fits with every style so I choose the style that fits!
So just create! do what you love and how you love to do it!
You may develop a certain style you may not... but your art is still art and I am sure it is beautiful and unique!
That’s a iffy message for me man.
I mean sure you don’t need it, but having something people can say “oh that’s Michelle’s art! (Or who ever is reading this comment)”
If your gallery is truly chaos with cartoons on one end, and realism on the other, that doesn’t look good.
I’m not saying trying other things (By all means do so!) but I’m saying that everyone DOES have a style, and should use that to their advantage
One of the drawing masterings I want is the ability to replicate various different styles
@@wittykittywoes I can really see what you mean and it really depends on the person and what you try to achieve with your art... I just don´t feel like I need it and I don´t need people to really recognise it.... But even though I don´t "work" to get an artstyle I kinda develop a few different ones unconciously (definitely spelled that wrong) just by making art...
U just contradicted yourself. You said u don't need a style then say try a drawing in DIFFERENT STYLES. 😂 Thought you didn't need one? 😂
If course you need A STYLE. The secret is like you said to TRY DIFFERENT ONES and see which one you're good at. Some like cartoon style, manga style, comic book style, traditional style, cross hatching, stippling with dots and lines, etc. Etc.
If you want MONEY, you have to find which style is most popular amongst the public and try with that. But DON'T forget the other styles as a secondary backup. The more you know, the more VERSATILE you will be.
"Draw a character" OK what style? You're told and then you respond with "I don't know that style". You just lost the client.
If you have NO INTEREST in making money with art, then just go with whichever you're comfy with and stick with that. But yes, you DO need a style. You can't just scribble like a child and expect anyone to take you seriously.
@@daviedood2503 I did not contradict myself... I said that I draw different pieces in different styles depending on what I want them to be... And yes if you want to earn money with your art having a style is required but if not... You can draw fancy stick figures and it's all good
And "scribbling like a child" is definitely not true why would you, just because you don't have a particular art style scribble like a child? You might as well draw one piece realistic, the other abstract the other cartoonist even though you don't have a style... I don't know if you meant it like that but it sounded like it...
The easiest way to find your art style is to draw! You'll immediately not like your picture, point out what's wrong, and go from there!
Ok
how do i draw tho?
@@taytonium1908 :0 how du u like to draw?._.
Taytonium step one: pick up a pencil or anything that can write on any surface
Step two: write down a circle, square, triangle.
Step three: combine.
I also found my art style by looking at other art styles and taking what I liked from said art style which is probably why I have multiple art styles.
I personally would like to consider one style I draw in to be “the” style, but I draw in so many that style to me doesn’t matter

Damn, that's a tough one. Is there an easier way?
But.. can there be away to find an art style If you suck at drawing? Askin for a friend
@@ei7945 yes, drawing
Yeah basically that is
Some people have a harder time on finding their art style, so they look for tutorials.
Out of the tousands of videos I watched about drawing the last seconds of this video is what opened my mind.
Your project doesn't need to be something complicated or specific , as long as you are doing something it's gonna get the job done.
I'm so glad you guys shaded Butch Hartman
Yeah, hes kinda been going off the deep end

The biggest obstacle I have to improving as an artist is no one to share it with and I stopped taking art classes since before high school and although I’ve improved a lot in just over a year from several videos for advice including this channel’s content I never bothered sharing my work out of fear someone might steal my ideas but that’s been holding me back slightly because although I’ve been doing an 100 day challenge since the start of the new year I haven’t shared anything from it both in person and online out of fear of rejective criticism causing me to lose motivation in addition to getting my ideas stolen although once I’m on the final ten days of which I’ll be designing fakemon of the 9 unused types plus a non mega dragon/fairy type I might share images of my work on this channel’s discord to see what anyone else would’ve done differently or what suggestions they would make for other designs since I did have a fakemon region idea that’s been on hold for a while now and all ten of the fakemon in my sketchbook are going to be in it and I know most regions even fanmade ones are based on real world things and locations mine is a made up nature preserve/settlement with very strict rules that need to be obeyed to be a trainer there and especially during the gym challenge which supposedly happens only during leap years and has one gym for every type and is open world with the gym leader’s teams level scaled based on the amount of badges the trainer has with a level limit on what you can train to and catch however the wild pokemon aren’t limited to level scaling and is recommended you run from higher level pokemon and some of the pokemon that live in this region aren’t found anywhere else hence why I’m adding fakemon
To find my art style I just tried them all out. Maybe not the traditional way, but I still love to mess around with art styles. Also, awesome vid!
"tried them all out"
What? You tried every style in existence?
All of them 😯
Tips from me, some random guy,
Use reference whenever you'll need it: If you want to draw a skeleton, find some images on Google or something.
Practice: even if it's just some chicken scratch, taking a long break can actually worsen your skills as an artist.
Take breaks: Hypocritical I know, but if you feel creatively burnt out, take a couple days off.
Don't think: Another solution to creative burnout, just draw something random without thinking about it.
Other stuff: If you have friends who share your passion, maybe do a collab. Look up videos if you get stuck. Feel free to pull inspiration from media you enjoy. Just don't copy/paste something and recolor it.
Thank you for listening to my TED talk
I just started drawing things i liked, since i was 2 or 3. It was 20 years later, after many more drawings, choosing what to draw, or what not to draw, and sampling different styles, that someone told me they can "recognize my style".
Whereas i fail to consider what i do a "style"... it's just how i do. I put pencil to paper how my specific brain enjoys doing so.
Cultivate a collection of your favorite art. It’s easy to find stuff on Instagram and Pinterest, also try to find older artists from before the internet. It might seem intimidating at first but it’s actually really fun.
I really needed to hear this. I’m always doubting myself as an artist, comparing myself to others and wondering if I’m actually good enough for a career in art in the future. I’m always afraid to go outside my comfort zone and experiment with different mediums. It’s really really nice to know that I’m not alone, and that working on an art project and having it not turn out the way you wanted it to, is okay and a key step in improving as an artist.
Thanks y’all for this, I appreciate it ❤️
Thank you guys for posting this video! This helps clear up a couple issues I have been having lately. Fortunately, I actually have been working on an Avatar Art Month challenge over on Instagram. This has helped me is many ways to develop my skills.
That 2018 Sunflora... My eyes are LITEREALLY watering right now, so beautiful!
Style is descriptive, not prescriptive.
Meaning, you see style in an artist's work with the benefit of hindsight. It's a pattern that you see looking back at the whole journey and all unseen influences that artist had, it's not something you intentionally decide to do, at least not from the start.
"Your next project doesn't need to be your magnum opus passion project
. Sometimes its better just to get something done and take what you learn on to the next thing."
As someone who has been in a bit of a slump and is QUITE the perfectionist, that statement was exactly what I needed to hear. I'm a musician rather than a visual artist but a LOT of what you discussed in this video is relevant to basically any creative discipline. Great video. xoxo
My main problem is that I don't know how shading and basic techniques work, I can't really sketch that well. If you guys made a video of basics, that would be great.🙂
Yup, same
Im 21 and trying to improve for like 3 months, im far from good but still i feel like im improving. I learned that starting soon is good but its not crucial, if you are "old" like me, don't let this bother you, everyone need to start from some point, and for me, starting is the first requirement that you need, not your age.
Mr. Jack: *says that he didn’t like half of his characters during the last month*

Are you a digital or traditional artist?
Traditional
@@skellybro5526 I used to do a ton of traditional as a kid! I did some pretty great works, if I may brag.
I'd suggest trying to go for a sketch-style to start off with. Your lineart won't be perfect, but with a bunch of additional lines, it makes it look really good nonetheless.
If you get into digital drawing at any point, the Correction Tool will be your best friend.
Good luck!💕
мun exe I’m more comfortable as a traditional artist but I’m trying to figure out digital. It really is a whole new experience but it certainly has its advantages, like being able to undo something I’d otherwise have to live with on paper. But wow with the crisp lines it’s harder to do line work where I can’t use extra strokes to create an illusion of being detailed, but I’m still very excited to improve!
@@heccinchonkercat You got this! Art can be hard as hell, but it's so worth the feeling of satisfaction when you sit back and realize "I made that."
I personally admire traditional artists a bit more than digital. Both are great in their own right BUT traditional always proved to be harder to me, with no way to easily erase mistakes and such.
You're gonna do great!

Honestly, through watching you guys and seeing your variety of works, I hope to rediscover and evolve my style - something that I haven't delved into for years and years. You guys are awesome!
Can you guys do a video on procreate tips?
I actually have no clue what I'm doing with shading and coloring. I only just recently learned how to use the multiply layer to paint over drawings
You made me realize why I personally feel I don't improve my art, it's because I'm always stuck drawing the same way everytime. I'll try drawing in different styles, away from my comfort zone and see if I can make an improvement. Thanks!
I always think "wow, I need to find my art style" but looking back at my sketchbook, I do have a style, it just changes a lot in little ways.
God when Claire said to not wait until you developed an art style to start a project a felt so called out 😂 Thank you guys so much for this video it was really helpful!!
Agreed! I have a project in the backburner. I come back to it. I def wanna actually start to finish the 1st episode of an original webcomic
Was not really finding a style, I just get influenced by something and use it in my art. If I like it then it'll stay with me. I got influenced by others' style like how they draw the eyes, their noses or their body and all from multiple artists, so in the end my general style is a hodgepodge of what I like in others' art but with my way of drawing it
This exactly! My style is a anime/manga inspired. It’s on a spectrum baed on realistic to simplistic At times it can go the realistic route of semi-anime (death note, or other animes/manga with a realistic approach),
the mid zone for me was kingdom hearts and tales of series or various shoujo/shonen manga I read, to the simplicity found in Pokemon and the like.
I’ve been waiting for this for a while now

This is some great advice, and that timeline of Claire's paintings was gorgeous.
Well I can say I have a new video to watch later! It was very informative!
Thank you!
Stuff I've learned from it:
1. Style can't be found overnight, so draw daily as much as possible to develop it.
2. Style can differ from medium to medium
3. Do master copies to learn how to draw features like your favorite master do
4 you can also do little exercises to learn what to copy
think it should also be noted that people can have multiple styles :0 i have one thats really cartoony with exaggerated body proportions and simplistic features, and another with more realistic anatomy and far more details. its all up to what project you're working on and what fits :)
I would kill for a collab video between you lovelies and drawfee. Two of my fave art youtube channels in one video would be a freaking dream!
I deal with envy of others every day, and would argue it is my main "sin", so to speak. This includes envy of others' art. I think a lot of it stems from suffering my carpal tunnel for years and falling behind artistically, and thinking of how much farther ahead I would've been if I didn't have to go through that. I hope that now I've identified the main cause of my envy that I will be able to properly deal with it in the future.
Tbh, once you build up your skills, you can definitely have a consistent style and then from there you can choose to keep that style or continue to incorporate things. you can continue to improve in both too,
This was very helpful, I have been struggling with not finishing a project and this helped me realise that I just have to push through if I want to evolve as an artist, thank you
i mostly just do art for fun. i think my art style today is just the current end result of everything I've learned over the many years of drawing I've done.
as you said a month challenge or regular comic is great for learning new things and consistency!
If the commercial was placed purposely after Jack finished his sentence, the placement would be geniusly educational, since it gave me time to thinking about it. And how the last part ( in my opinion the important part) was cut of so fast that, I couldn't help myself but to repeat the last bit over and over till the commercial was done, which supports thinking about the meaning behind his words. This was (if my theory was correct) a mastermind move, well done!
I find these videos to be so helpful
Personally, i find my art looks okay but i have difficulty making artwork of artistic consistency
That is to say; if i draw a character more then once they look like a different character...
I can relate... It's hard for some of us to be consistent. :(
Same, my characters wouldn’t be able to recognize themselves in a mirror at this point
@@delmarshepherd2807 Thanks, I appreciate hearing that. Especially cuz many of my friends and family do art like nobodies business lel
How to find your artstyle: draw
I dont know if you wrote that humorously but in a way , it's absolutely correct , you have to "draw" , specifically you have to "draw" characters . What ever comes in your mind :)
Shush everything I draw looks like garbage that I frankensteined out of Tumblr art.
@@bluepearl4624 dont consider your art garbage bro , just do it everyday , be patient you'll get better and better :)

Thank you so much. I think this will help my gf with her confidence withwhat art she makes ☺️
So glad you guys made this video! I’ve been wanting to create my own Fakemon Region and my own Pokédex for such a long time. But I’ve always been hesitant to start, because I never felt confident that I could accurately replicate Ken Sugimori’s style well enough for people to like my work. I guess I need to quit being so scared and stop aiming for one specific style, and just start creating!
Ok, before watching the video I will give my opinion. I believe that an artist's drawing style is achieved from a mixture of other styles. I explain. Take what you like about each of the artists you follow (face, proportion, color, eyes, backgrounds ...) and put it all in one. The result is your style. At least that's how I got mine and how I see it.
“Or digital drawings of dog people”
GSHSHSUH YOU DIDNT HAVE TO CALL ME OUT LIKE THAT
I checked out your channel, it’s cool :)
I’m really glad you guys made this video. Definitely speaks to me.
Thank you guys so much for this video. As an artist myself, I appreciate your words and opinions. I have definitely been there when looking at other artists work and feeling depressed about my own skill level. Also, the pressure sometimes pushed on you to have your own STYLE. I think I'll just do what got me into art in the first place, drawing what I want for the love and fun of it. =)
I’m not very good at art, and definitely haven’t found my style yet, but i’m currently making my own fakemon pokedex to practice. It’s really fun, and I really recommend it for inexperienced artists who love pokemon.
I'm very thankful to have learned so much from this video! It was very nice hearing your perspectives on a topic I've been exploring a lot. I'm by no means consistent with my art style, but my style comes through a lot because I have a certain technique, and I hadn't really realized that until after watching this. Thank you again, and I look forward to more videos like this!

It was really refreshing and assuring to watch this video just to remind myself to keep going with myrt and to not be stuck :D keep up the good work everyone
Even if my style is not realistic and more cartooney, is it still possible for me to make a famous series someday.
This was a really nice video. I've had a lot of trouble with this and finding a medium to work with.
Hm... I'm currently working on making my art style more consistent and I get this recommended. Neat :)
Funnily enough, a huge inspiration for my style is Pokemon. It was a huge part of my childhood, and when I draw animals, you can definitely see that Pokemon influence. The Drawn to Life series is another big one for me. It lead to me putting a lot of fluff on everything for a while, and is probably a good reason for me liking soft colors now.
Who else is okay with their art until they want to show someone it then realize every single thing they did wrong?
As an artist myself im always struggling with consistency, i always use something diferent or new in what could be my "comfort zone" because im still learning and trying out new things. You can see the same characters but they always look diferent in a way, this isnt bad for me but for my potential customers it is. I always ask for them to give me an example from my gallery because i need to know what they're expecting from me and its frustrating when they get dissapointed and dont comission ever again from me.
@Subjectively
But what if I don't have even the start of my own style? After 30 years of searching...
I feel like I have gone too far with other people's styles.
I started with deconstructing and mimicking other artists' styles, but now I find myself with no style of my own. Maybe it is partially because I also do more kinds of art than I can keep track of.
I feel like I lack any identity and form of my own, from one piece to the other.
It is good for business because I can give people something similar to what they want, but What I want is to find my style.
Any idea what I should do?
I think that I have already found my art style, and I’m just a kid🙂
I don’t know, maybe I’ll change it some time later
Ay good to hear, yeah your drawing will definitely change overtime. Just like how you will grow as a person, but never be afraid to try something new.
Good luck little artist :)
I learned drawing by myself and also by just watching other drawing i never something else made and my art isn't so bad .
I also learned by myself shadows and i'm proud of me
I can't wait for October. I've got a whole list of prompts to do for each day..is it Spooktober or Inktober for digital art?..anyways, it'll challenge me to make something in a day. I dont currently have a major art style I use, i draw stuff in different styles depending on what it is. If its a cool dragon like DarkEdgeTV’s Great Red Dragon, or my own Grand Ice Hydra (both made in spore), I would draw them to look more realistic and cool since they’re giant epic dragons. If I’m drawing cats, I go for a less realistic style. I also do a cute, less realistic style for other dragons too, like the Giddle dragon from DragonVale
i didn't even notice the background music for a solid 3 minutes of the video cause im so used to hearing that song faintly looping in the background of my ffxiv fc house. Cause my friends thought it was funny

Hi i am still struggling to find my art style as i love drawing pokemon and tracing harry potter creatures but i would really like to be able to draw better.
I already have my art style. The best thing to do is to keep practicing and the style will come. I was inspired by anime. That is my main basis. My favorite of which is Pokemon. Back in the day I had a lot of books about how to draw anime. They were made by Christopher Hart. I got other inspirations. My Little Pony was good for its cute animals, especially ponies. The Disney movies Frozen and Tangled have good princess characters. World of Warcraft has good landscapes and colors. From there I develop my own style. It is an intense fantasy style with cute characters. I call my stuff Larrian. My style changed a lot over the years. My human characters now look very different from what they looked like when I was barely starting out. This week I was doing creature design. Oh boy that is fun. Quite a few character are cute. I like cute. One of them is a pony. A pony is a good thing to draw when I am in a creative rut. It is a comfort zone in a sense. I did get my own spin of the creature. I studied what real ponies are like on the Internet especially Google images. I notice certain features that make them different from regular horses other than size. Ponies are more baby like in apearence. I was so excited by this discovery. I can push the design even further and it can still be justified by reality. So I get inspired by My Little Pony, and then I incorperate the apealling features of real ponies. Then I get something that is somehow even cuter. It is an adorable little horse baby. Ponies are not the main focus. I just put it in hundereds of other creature species. Then the creatures are a part of the fantasy world. Creatures are significant, but they are not the main focus. I am starting creature design over again. I only have a few so far. However I plan to do more. When I draw creatures I like to make them cute. I like the cute aesthetic. Last night I designed another creature that is based on a baby dragons. I have seen dragon babies before. They tend to be like regular babies. They are like adults but smaller and cuter. I got my own spin on it . I have a baby dragon more like a snake. This is based on the Imugi. An imugi is a baby dragon that looks like a snake. It comes from Korea. Also my favorite dragon Pokemon is Dragonite. I find it interesting that its evolution is based on the imugi. Dragons and snakes are scary and they have a bad reputation. So it is really changing to make one cute. I did pull it off. I also added dragon features to the snake. There is a strip of fur ong the back as well as ears that look like tiny wings. I did the two main legendary creatures. In this case I found out something about my style. I can be something that I evolved towards. Pokemon usually has a pair of two main legendaries. They adorn the box art. I have mixed feelings on legendary Pokemon. The ideas behind them is interesting. However I don't like the designs. They are so overdesigned. They are sopposed to look cool. Instead they just look ugly. My favorite legendary is Lugia. The main reason why it is good is that it has a simpler and better looking design. A simple design doesn't compromise looking cool and impressive. I also like Latias and Latios, and they look similar. I like Pokemon designs in general. Legendaries are the exeption to the rule. The first two generations have the best designs. Gen 6 is good too. These gens are good because they were not so overdesigned. When I make my own creatures, this preference develops into my style. I like something cutesy. Hoever more than that I prefer designs that are fancier than real animals but not super fancy. My style is a far cry from the super elaborate and intimidating designs of Digimon and You-Gi-Oh. Pokemon is my favorite kind of monster besides my own. One of the major things that makes it better is the cuter designs. When I do my legendaries I have a whole different aproach. One of them is a legendary horse. This horse is associated with light and the sun. I have a fantasy part of the horse. It has a unicorn horn and pegasus wings. I also add in a hippocampus tail for good measure. The design is elaborate by my standards, but still a lot simpler than a legendary could have been. I like that. There is also a nice and natural feel to the horse. The bits of color are based on the markings that occur in real horses. I like the natural part. Artifical looking creatures are not as appealing to me. They look tacky. Some pokemon look more like this especially in the later generations. That is something I would rather stay way from. I don't even like cutie marks in My Little Pony. The concept of showing special talents is interesting, but the marks are too tacky for my taste. So when I design my pony and legendary horse, both are blank flanks. The other legendary is a legendary dragon. This dragon are associated with dark and the moon. I pick horse and dragon as the legendaries because they are two most prominant creatures of fantasy. The horse fits the light side because both are associated with the hero. The dragon and the dark side fit because both are the opposite. I set this side up as the villain. Then I subvert it as being a misunderstood friend. The horse and the dragon are at odds, but they work best in harmony. With the dragon, I gain more insights of my developing style. I go elaborate but not too elaborite. I also go for natural. There is no dragons in real life. However I am aware of common trends in the colors and patterns of real life animals. So I come up with something that fits within the trends and just use that. The closest thing real life has to dragons are dinosaurs and pterosaurs. They are all giant reptiles, and they look cool. There is creatures like that that live in modern times. They are the crocodiles and alligaters. I have a spin on dragons where I base thier anatomy off of the modern depictions of dinosaurs. Thier is a subtle difference in that the body structure is stiffer. 6:22 This picture of dragon muscle anatomy really stood out to me in the video. It reminds me of what I just designed, and it is fresh in my mind. It is also significantly different than how I tackled the same kind of thing. This picture is more like a mammal. My take is a lot stiffer. I think stiffness is probably for helping to support the body at a large size. Mammals are a lot smaller than the bigger dinosaurs. Even elephants and giraffes are smaller. The only exception is whales, but they can use water to suppot them. For this one dragon creature, the dinosaur I draw the most off of is sauropods. Sauropods are the dinosaurs with long necks. I am fond of these guys. It is hard to figure why. Maybe it is because I loved Land Before Time as a kind, and the main character was a sauropod. Chikorita and Aumaura are two of my favorite Pokemon, and they are also sauripods. Sauropoads make a good base for a dragon. I just add the sharp claws of a therapod (carnivorus dinosuar) and the wings of a pterosaur and that makes a dragon. When I did the design, I liked it. The sauropod part makes it look titanic and graceful. There is a nice natural grounding. It is good for imersion. One can get in a fantasy world. It is more belevable to imagine sauopods being ther. They are sauropods with pterosaur wings. That is a nice take on the dragon. I did find out about my style. I am leaning into what is natural. Even when I make creatures that don't exist It is natural.
Thank you for making this video.
Y a y I saw this and immediately wanted to compare it to how I found my style(s). When I see someone's art who is better at a certain thing than I am, I try and deconstruct how they made it and I try and completely rebuild it in my own way in my own way and thats how I got to where I'm at
Thank you, i was getting insecure lately with my drawings
Personally, I love the non pokemon content. Really helpful video, hope it does well.
These Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls references...
I respect
for me it's really frustrating because i really want to try out drawing digitally, at least on an ipad or something, but it's so expensive.. but drawing on paper, i feel kinda stuck and that i'm barely progressing.. i really hope this won't spoil my hobby; i never want to stop drawing..
Not an artist, but I still like watching all your videos.
what app do you use to draw the pictures
My main problem with style is that I tended to draw alot of dragon ball and jojo related characters. Once I stopped drawing dragon ball characters (I still sometimes draw jojo-esque stuff) I immediately started to find my own little style after that👍🏾
i genuinely thought i was the only one going threw the trying to find your style before you draw things< don't do this it will give you so much stress🤧
You guys inspire me everyday
Dont know if you alredy talked about it. But have you made a (how to finish projekts) video. I know that it might seem a bit silly, but its a series strukkel i have.
I *SEE* that NNSG reference, and I *RESPECT* it.
i think people wanting an artstyle is pretty much just saying i want to draw something fast
Not necessarily! For me, wanting an artstyle is saying I want a consistent look to my art that I will enjoy looking at. Something I'd pay for and want to hang up on my wall, like a poster you buy at a convention. Of course I don't want it to take forever to finish the art piece, but the main thing is how the art looks.
@@delmarshepherd2807 i think i should clarify this, i meant fast by actually doing art as a fast career, having a style pretty much means drawing easier, thus making it faster in the process, so i could see why lots -including me- wants to find thier art style fast
