I think it's impossible to rate the best player ever--across positions, eras, different rules, different opponents, it's just so hard to assess. That said if I had to put together an all-time starting five, I'd go Magic, Jordan, Bird, Tim Duncan, and Hakeem Olajuwon. And if you needed someone to take a shot to save your life--much as I love MJ--you'd have to go with Bird. The best clutch shooter, and maybe clutch player, of all time.

Many of the comments I'm reading about Shaq's EARLY opinion of Bird, make me think folks weren't paying attention to what he said. A lot of folks weren't fans of Bird in the 80s and 90s;" White Savior"; " can't jump";"can't run";"overhyped". I was a fan of HIS...not Boston...and had numerous arguments about him with friends. They'd say I fell for the hype. I told them,..".what happens on the court will tell if you can actually play, or not. If he wasn't pro-ready, the players would expose him. And,...he hasn't been exposed yet. The MF'er can flat out play. Y'all can't figure out how he does what he's doing, because you're not paying attention to how he plays. Pay attention to his SKILLS." They'd look at me like I was a fool. Over time, each of 'em would tell me I was right.
Shaq had the "lucky" opinion when he was younger, and changed it a few years after;he said it. Weren't people paying attention ? If NBA PLAYERS had to learn how good Bird was, fans, who don't know the game how players do, HAD to learn, too. Bird is widely admired;has been for decades. But, that was not the case in the early 80s. And, those who considered him "the Savior" had to learn he wanted no part of that hype b.s. And said so every time he was asked about it.

What if Shaq and Bird played together. We all know that by 1992, Bird was older and injuries really began to be a major problem for him , so he announced that he would retire at the end of that season.
Let's say prior to the trade deadline. The Celtics send a couple of role players from their bench and their 1992 1st round pick to the Orlando Magic for their 1st rd pick. The role/bench players don't make the Magic that much better, and they still lose enough games to enter the lottery, but remember the Magic and Celtics swapped draft picks. So if Magic is awarded the #1 overall pick, that pick now goes to Celtics.
Guess who the Celtics take to pair up with Bird, who now agrees to come back for one final season in 1992-93. The young 7 foot 300 pound monster from LSU.
So now, with Shaq doing the dirty work. That makes an aging Larry Bird's job much easier. Much like earlier on in his career, Jordan and the Bulls once again fall to Bird's Celtics in the playoffs this time with a young Shaq stealing the show.
In 1993 NBA Finals Bird gets his fourth and final ring as he bids farwell after the finals, and Shaq wins a championship in his rookie year as the Celtics sweep the Phoenix Suns. 4-0

Good grief commonsense should inform you that nobody could be as good and consistent as Byrd was for so many years and dismiss it as luck. He's been a great player since high or maybe even grammar school. He was great at Indiana State as well but in the title game against Magic and Greg Kilser, I believe he was totally handcuffed in that his teammates weren't as talented as the Michigan State squad. If he hadn't gotten so homesick and ashamed of his humble attire at Bloomington he would have been the greatest player that Bobby Knight coached at Indiana including their undefeated season players. He said he and Knight got along fine when he was there but I think eventually Knight would have alienated Byrd and caused him to transfer. After all, hasn't Knight just about, alienated everyone? But I will say this I admired the respect Knight always expressed toward Dean Smith who was a consistently great coach of my UNC Tar Heels and could have won more than two titles if he had been selfish and not told his best players to enter the NBA draft if he and they thought they were ready. And he'd also convince the NBA franchise to insert a bonus clause into the player's contract that if he went back and finished his degree work and get his diploma he'd get so many bonus dollars an incentive that most of them took advantage of.

Larry Bird was a very good Basketball player. The reality is "NO" one would be discussing the Fact that Larry Bird was a very good Basketball player if Larry Bird was NOT WHITE! This proves racism is just wrong on so many levels. Case in point Mac McClung. If Mac McClung was NOT a White Basketball Player he would have NEVER left GeorgeTown University. If he was NOT a White Basketball Player he would have been picked up before the Dunk Contest because he had already proved to anyone that he could play. Yes that is me and I am very black. I would ask anyone will there ever be a time when people can just be people?

You are simply wrong. He was thought about as slow, low jumping and unathletic because he was white. He led the break, dunked, and blocked shots while shooting like Steph. He was a bigger player than anyone thinks now. You are the racist buddy.

@@anthonybarnes7545 Dude I am Agreeing with you. My point is this kid would have gotten a better look in college and in the draft he was Not white. FYI Racism is an Institution not an Individual feeling. Individual feeling as called Bigots. Also learn to read better before drawing the WRONG conclusion.

Here is the list of NBA players who averaged 24/10/6 for their career:
      Larry Bird
      End of list.
Here is Larry Bird’s MVP vote ranks from ‘80 to ‘88:
      2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
You’re looking at one of the all-time great talents in NBA history. Longevity/injuries are the only thing that keeps him from the GOAT conversation. To say he was good bc he is white is one of the most absurdly dumbest things that anyone could say.
