Fun fact, I was the one that discovered the style change glitch that allowed for infinite combos. And there's proof of it on the mkonline forums (I was known as scorpio back in those days)
While I love check and we were good friends, he often gets a lot of credit for doing things he didn't necessarily come up with due to the fact he was the only one who was able to capture hq video back then lol.

Most of today's MK fans look 3D era with bad eyes but those games were also fun to play.

Combos in Armageddon be like:
You can do 120% Combo, but you need to be player 2 on the Subway stage playing on a windows monitor and it has to be a Thursday and you can only use Mokap and the sun has to be shining and you must've previously performed a blood sacrifice to the elder gods and then you have to use your controller upside down
And it only works on Shang Tsung after he performs a grab and misses, and he has to be exactly at 0.89 meters from your character

MK11: We made this D1 6 frames on startup because if was anything less or more, it would be unbalanced.
MKA: If you're not playing on the shittiest resolution possible, then this combo is impossible to perform.
MK11 has 5-8 frame startup D1s
So online, what would happen if one person was in 4:3 and the other in widescreen? How out of sync could it get?

I really adore MK Armageddon - amazing arenas and soundtracks, costumes, air combos, konquet mode, motor kombats, Kreate-A-Fighter mode, intro, huge amount of characters

I loved it. Mastered all the characters and was playing on the highest difficulty back in the day. Underrated 3d fighter imo

I remember that Pakistan had a huge tournament for this game years ago which had the biggest turnout for a competitive fighter at the time. Always thought that was neat.

It's kinda sad that this didn't happened. As bland as Taven and Daegon were (design-wise), they still have potential and I hope they will get some sort of revisit down the line.

This Meta series has been amazing so far, and this might have been my favorite entry just because i knew so little about the mechanics of MK:A. I never took the 3d games too seriously when i was younger, and the universal fatalities alone made it feel more forgettable. Seeing this vid has given me a better appreciation for the unique and broken game that it is, lol.
Yeah remember seeing that promo poster at a gamestop as a kid, it was like a dream of mine coming true.

22:55 Um, 2-3 for scorpion wasn't safe. The axe kick could be parried during mid combo. There was a ton of combos that could be parried right in the middle of doing them.
23:18 ashrah had the same grab glitch sareena had. Was a bit more difficult to do though
Also, quan chi, who had a special that disabled opponents weapons (similar to his weapon steal from mk4) caused special infinite combos vs him only due to the weapon style missing and it would cause loops

I was actually heading to game crazy for a random visit and I saw that poster and it was the most surreal sight in my little kid life… I talked my dad to getting it since he was a huge mk2 fan and when he saw reptile on the poster he we went back and pre ordered it

MKDA is arguably more balanced.
It was broken sometimes but for the most part the brokenness balanced itself out sometimes
mk armageddon is so wild that the video had a completely different combo showcase when i watched on 144p
Havik could also infinite you after his grab if he proceeded to use a specific kick because his grab would launch you and the kick while you were mid-air after connecting would leave him plus enough to repeat the grab as you were getting up.

as much as it is usually annoying, i think falling cliffs is iconic at this point. i will never forget some of my frustrations in that arena.
This was a great video. It's good to see the 3D era get some love and I learned a lot of new things. Things like the Sub Zero impale, the Player 2 advantage and the resolution differences were very fascinating. I want to play Armageddon and test it all now.

Couldn't see an MK2 Meta in your video list. Is there one coming? The MK1 video blew my mind as I consider myself a veteran of the franchise having started on MK1 arcade uprights but there was loads of mechanics I had simply had no idea of in that video that really made me want to revisit that game. Had some idea of the MK3 stuff but never was at a "pro" level on that and haven't been able to to invest that sort of time into fighters since. But MK1 and 2 took up a lot of my childhood. I was a top 10 player in my local arcade group.. But looking at your MK1 meta video I'd have to say our group of players must not have been on par with other groups as I'd never seen most of those extended juggles. Presumably we also only had the 3rd revision as we had access to reptile but no prompts. Thoroughly enjoying this video series !
The air combo reminds me of X Men: Next Dimension. Gosh, I love that game. Such a cool concept. It's a bit of a primitive version of Tekken and Mortal Kombat combined.

really great video breaking down MKA, I was really blown away by the roster size in this game as a kid. crazy to think that I barely used any of these mechanics while playing this game back then lol. my favorite 3D MK game is MK Deception, I really enjoyed playing through the Konquest mode in that game multiple times.
Aside from Falling Cliffs, I don't understand how Death Traps aren't good in competitive play. They seem like MK's equivalent to Ring Outs in other games

Because it's too easy to knock someone into a death trap compared to ring outs in other 3D fighters. Some stages like the cliff stage as the stage collapsing behind them so even a scrub could beat a pro player on those stages.

Any chance in doing one for Deception? While I did play quite a bit of MK:A on its release, it was Deception that brought me back to the series full force as DA did not grab my attention. Yes, I understood MKD game was broken, as this was discovered quite early in its retail life, but the sheer ambition of the game and the prospect of online play via XBL/Gamespy was hard to ignore back in the day.
Armageddon was my jam! I bought it on Wii of all things and had a blast. I fell in love with the more competitive 9, and got hooked deep into the fighting game scene with X.
Man i really miss the wildness and fun of the 3D era. Now everything is tailored to balance.

Im happy to say that this was my first MK game that I played. I went back to play the others but this one was my first and my favorite.
I'm sure you have your hands full with MK1 but I would 100% watch a series where you go through each character worth going through in this game. Could probably go through in chunks like 3 to 5 at a time

Thank you K&M I finally got the answer about how Check was able to do those CRAZY COMBOs these day. I was so annoyed because I couldn't figure out how could he do those infinite combos which seemed completely impossible, I tried to execute them many times but failed. Now I know he had to adjust the resolution, the angle, the player,... etc in order to do those combos. If we play "normally" without adjusting anything those combo cannot be done at all
These days I cn cmrtably execute hlf of checks combos, yea these days

Im lucky enough to have found the Premium edition of this game with all the stuff in it for dirt cheap, my favorite part of my ps2 collection no doubt.
Suprised we didn't hear anything about Kintaro in the video. It could be false but I've heard a rumor he's the only character in the game that can regenerate health.

This was probably the game I was ever best at. I used to play online on Ps2 all the time, I had 3 accounts in the top 20 rankings lol, I was even cocky enough to make an account named "First", I tried to get 1st, but I only ever got to 2nd. My KaK was so broken (as they all were), and I was a god with Shinnok. I miss those days sometimes.
Bro, I'd love to see one for Deception or Deadly Alliance. I know so little about the meta for them except for Dairou being really really good in Deception. Those games were my childhood
Exactly. Dairou is one of my favorite 3D era characters because I always love his special moves, fatalities, Hara Kiri and Kung Fu poses. The Tombstone Drop is amazing and crazy. He's OP in Deception and he was nerfed in Armageddon.

Just discovered your channel. Never thought that was even possible to do such a exhausting gameplay analisis of the classics games. For me before MK 2011, MK were only dumb-button-mashing fun. Can't wait your meta of: MK2, MKD, MKvDC, MK2011, MKX and MK11.
Question: Why the Death Traps in MKA were banned competitively when in Soul Calibur games you had the Ring Out mechanic which was essentially just like the Death Traps, except without the gore of course? Amazing video like always BTW.
If I had to guess, I'd assume it's because there were tons of other broken mechanics within the game. Lol
@@user-to8ki3dv6x Ketchup explained that in his Jarek video, there were just too easy of ways to get a ring out with certain character's moves, nothing about the other mechanics

The bosses could be thrown, but only by other bosses. Killing Blaze with a throw at the end of Arcade mode caused some glitchy animations.

This game was HORRIBLY balanced but god I grew up with and love this game, if it ever got a flat out re-release and/or remaster to just touch up graphics and how it handled I would buy it in a heart beat
