Every time I get around to watching one of your videos, and I must confess, not often lately, I'm transported back into that remarkable space, where drawing is fun, its play. Thank you.
Good grief! Wish I could get there where you are in your comment. I wanted to be a "serious" artist. And, I do produce some nice drawings from time to time. But I'm so wrapped up in realism and perfectionism that it robs me of the enjoyment I might have had. That I had as a kid. I wanted to be able to sell my art work cuz I'm older and I'm physically fucked so can't work in my trade. And although it's pretty good (my art work), I don't feel it is good enough to make a living with. So the joy is lost. I shred more drawings than I keep, that's for sure. Comments welcome.
Finally someone who Explains WHY and WHAT causes my drawings to look like they do, and how to actually fix it. Your videos are really, really helpful! Thanks!
🤯 I'm always trying to draw the lines straight and shapes "correctly". Now I see how much better it looks with character. What an amazing comparison! Thank you!!
This is a great review and summary of basic concepts. I like the way you've shown how to maximize the capabilities of a pen and reinforced the ideas of not getting bogged down and imperfect is OK. In fact, it's desirable.

I recently found your channel and have been going through your video catalog for some tutorials on how to sketch with just ink because that is the style I love, so a new video for just ink and pen is great. Don't get me wrong, I love your watercolor sketchs but it's a little to advance for me currently.
This should be pinned all over RUclips each Inktober. 👍👍👍 How to prepare for Inktober? Get an ink pen, a piece of paper, and review Toby's basic inking techniques. Have fun drawing.
Thank you for your wise advice. I don’t draw well so makes this sketching less stressful. It's a challange because I'm a bit of a perfectionist so being loose is against my personality. I really enjoy your teaching method and light take on sketching. Thank you.
I've recently bought a fountain pen, and it came with three nibs one of them being a bent nib have you done any sketching with one of these nibs? They leave a very thick line
Soo i love drawing and i always did it whit pencil first and than with a fineliner. But i made sure it was very neat nand clean. But i think its boring ,because i was focussed on the perfectness of every line and not on the fun anymore. It also took me forever. So i decided that i want to draw more loose. I am still trying to find out my style, but i think this video is my very first step towards this direction. Thank you so much!
Every time a see you use hatching I realize I need to practice my hatching more and think less about moving on to color to “finish off” my sketches. I am really enjoying all your videos on texture.

Welcome back!

Great info as always. These little changes pay dividends. Also, thanks for the trigger warning. I dug deep and got through it. 🤣🤣
Glad it was helpful!

You’re welcome 😊
I've recently bought a fountain pen, and it came with three nibs one of them being a bent nib
have you done any sketching with one of these nibs? They leave a very thick line
Yes, Fude pen, they don't suit me very well but some artists are fantastic with them
That is a wonderful, helpful video for this 77 year old beginner
So glad!
Hi Toby! Great video! Do you ever draw digital? Have you tried to do it in this style?
Yes I have, it's not my strength though 😂

What model name has this beautiful red pen?
LAMY safari
@@TobySketchLoose thanks, but I mean the big one with golden nib. 😉
@@TobySketchLooseThat’s not a LAMY! Which pen is it? And more importantly, which nib do you use?
@@jdennhardt8595 ahhh the red pen, its a namiki - nib M
GREAT video! Thank you for this, just subscribed! What is the brand/model pen you are using on the left drawing?
I saw the Lamy Safari, I was inquiring about the first pen you used before that, the one that looks like a felt tip? Thank you again!
Tombow fude, soft nib :)
Thank you!!!@@TobySketchLoose
so basically, shapes, texture AND contrast

You can do it!
why do your scribble lines look great and mine look confusing?
I'd imagine at least in part you're being hard on yourself
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I draw with a pen 😎😎

You could have developed the picture on the right further. You just stopped and said it was boring.
I did indeed, creative licence to make the point of course - one can always do more :D
Thank you, great suggestions.
You are so welcome!
