That combination of charisma, confidence, warmth and imagination makes Martin one of the most interesting pianists of his generation. He makes the pianistic part look easy and takes us on a journey from which we never want to return. He even managed to seduce the normally conservative jury into allowing him to the final. A deserved entry, Martin. You should get all the accolades you can get for showing us Chopin in a way that we were never aware of.

@@mareksobieraj8760 I felt the way you do, but he won me over. I never doubted his talent and musicality, but whether his playing was "true to Chopin". I stand by my chosen phrase for how I view this: "Big Tent." I'm appreciating Chopin in ways I never did before, and all I can do is say how thankful I am to the jury and most especially to Mr. Garcia for opening up a whole new dimension to my love of Chopin. It doesn't matter that I've always gravitated to the melancholy, dark view and approach, and maybe still do just as much. Mr. Garcia brings a light and charm and spontaneity and vitality that does nothing to diminish these other aspects, but rather *complement* and thus amazingly *enhance* them. This is POETRY, my friend!!!

@@AnonYmous-ry2jn I generally appreciate darker, more introspective artists also. Maybe it is "the year and a half" we have had...but I felt the more joyful interpretations fared better this year. I was blown away by Aimi's Preludes, but for me the darkness and heaviness (emotional not touch) of her playing was almost suffocating. Bravo Garcia! Each round I thought he might not make it. I wondered what the judges would do with him - create a special prize?- but he got better and better throughout.

From the candidates I, ve heard so far, this guy has the most beautiful playing. For me this is the most Chopin sound, tone and approach. His tone is fresh, airy, romantic. His transitions are seemles. If you don, t look at what he does you might think he flows over the piano, rather then press it. Excellent phrasing! Bravo! Definitely a Chopin master! He could perfectly record a complete Chopin recordings for Deutche Gramophone. It would be a new benchmark for Chopin playing and romantic playing too.

It is commonly believed that the main reason why Ivo Pogorelic was eliminated in the third round of the controversial 1980 Chopin competition was because some of the judges thought that he was trying to mimic the unconventional mannerism that Glenn Gould exhibited during performances.
BTW, I don't recall there being much (if any) criticism of GG for that, with the notable exception of the late, great harpsichordist Scott Ross, who said that Gould was a nut (or words to that effect) who didn't understand Bach at all. Ross was a Professor of Music and an acknowledged authority on Baroque music. He made two outstanding recordings of the Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord, and without utilizing what we would now call the Cut & Paste method of cobbling together the best parts of several takes that GG did to produce his recordings of the GV that Columbia Masterworks released to the public, for which he garnered so much acclaim, justifiably or not.

A very good rendition of the first prelude (no. 17), which I think is one of the most successful compositions by Chopin, alongside many of the Mazurkas, Barcarolle, and some of the etudes.

It is Tom Hanks in What About Bob? at the piano! I think he is the most musically-inspired of the finalists, but I do think he needs to work on his singing... Wish he'd played the entire set of 24 Preludes. The taste was better than what the others brought in their totality.
