I worked at a restaurant about 10 years ago and during the summer off-season we would have weekly classes and this was my particular favorite. Wine with junk food. Such a fun exercise.
THANK YOU Konstantin... Primitivo and chocolate - I'm off to my friends wine bar RIGHT NOW! :) Edited! So, after seeing my mate Paolo he introduced me to Nero d'avola from Sicily that works better with chocolate. Love your channel. How interactive is that????!!!!!! I've eaten chocolate and I'm drunk
Great video. It shows your versatility given the bizarre snacks. I’d love to see this subject covered with more conventional dishes, as in meat and potato’s. Maybe do standard pairings and more daring pairings.
For thai sweet chilli and thai curries or even chinese food i find orange wines that are quite funky (maybe slightly oxidative) go really well. There is slight sweetness and a little acidity but they're slightly more robust than a comparable white wine so they hold up better to the strong spices, but don't over power the food like a robust red might
There is a vineyard local to me which makes a Merlot and blackberry fruit wine blend that I love pairing with peanut butter cups- it's a bit like having a decadent peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
I had a lot of fun playing along, making my own pairings for each snack before I saw what you picked. This is what I came up with: herring w/ paprika sauce: rosé m&m cookies: porter, malmsey madeira noodles: fino sweet chilli crisps: riesling kabinett/spätlese peanuts: white burgundy (e.g. maconnais) marshmallows: asti egg: black tea, sake (?) bacon snack: cava oreo cookies: ruby port salami sticks: barbera I liked all your choices but still came up with different ones. 😃 For the marshmallows and the oreos we had almost the same idea. If not limited to wine: chocolate cookies should pair well with a porter with some sweetness. And the egg really stumped me, although I have a few suggestions.
Pairing wine with unusual foods is one of my favorite things! This was a lot of fun! One of my favorite snacks is a big bowl of truffle popcorn and Pinot Noir. Although it works with a Syrah too.
It's a great video demystifying the whole big discussion about food and wine pairings. Sometimes, if I have a good to great wine, I enjoy it it with mixed nuts and cheese.
Great video as always! What about doing a video or series of videos where you suggest the pairings for the most common dishes (salami and cheese platters, pasta with ragù, pasta with fish sauce, soups, grilled meat and fish, desserts...)?
By a remarkable coincidence, we attended a fun tasting just last Wednesday organised by our local wine merchant which was all about pairing wine with crisps (chips). Some worked better than others, but my wife and I particularly enjoyed a Mosel Riesling that paired well with a sour cream and onion corn snack - even more so when we won a bottle of the same Riesling in the raffle 😀
Hi Konstantin! I think the best combination of snack and wine that I ever had was a Bourgogne Pinot Noir with Epoisses. The Epoisses really added to the (sadly) mediocre wine and made it an amazing experience!
This is s very handy video to keep on hand. We often have friends over and they bring a variety of snacks - mostly homemade - having a decent pairing available is key. Now, I just need to bump up my cellar stock with some bottles that I am missing! A favorite pairing for us is to match a zinfandel (often Ridge) with dates and raw walnuts. That combination is a great way to both start or finish a meal. Since I am not one that likes over sweet desserts - this checks the box.
Sausage rolls and Gigondas is just brilliant when I visit my family. The herby peppery sausage meat just works so well with that wine and for cheesy snacks, especially if it´s cheddar I love the FMC!
Mrs Baum has certainly set some challenges there! My fave combo has to be beef dripping fried chips with white Burgundy.. Also extends to fish and chips, hardly a snack though. If the fish is so fresh that it was swimming at 6.am that day, and thing was cooked par excellence, then the delicate flavour of the milky white flakes and robust understatement of the beef dripping fry will stand up to and complement perfectly even the finest of these grand wines. Very informative and enjoyable! Nice one. Cheers Konstantin! 🌟👍
Some Roquefort served on a Lotus Biscoff cookie with a glass of 10 y Tawny always gets me in a good mood during a cold winter evening in front of the fire.
Thank you Konstantin, really enjoyed this video for the fun and informative content. I mean who doesn’t enjoy a quick snack, and now we can pair them with delicious wines. Cheers!!
I've personally never seen anyone ever suggesting a pairing of fruits and wine. I LOVE IT. Talking about high tannins, high alcohol reds but I just wouldn't mind it and will certainly enjoy it with just any red. HAVE YOU? Well do yourself/selves a favour and try it.
Something oaky and peppery with high alcohol and tannins. I wouldn't even mind an oaked chardonnay or even a sparkling mainly with apples and pears but peaches with reds. For many different reasons I'm mainly a Lebanese wine drinker especially with the crazy recession that we have. Lebanese wines have never been more cheaper and the opposite goes to imported wines.
Two years ago I opened a bottle of Akilia (mencia) to go with a steak, I didn’t really like it, so i opened a bourdeux instead. The day after i really craved fish, so i opened a can of high quality spanish sardines in olive oil, and i thought i might as well try it with The mencia, now slightly chilled, and it was divine! Both The wine and The «dish» became much better when paired
I really enjoy the challenge of pairing wine with food. (Probably because I'm never afraid of messing it up. Good wine with good food is almost always going to be enjoyable.) But nearly all the resources on the subject I’ve come across don’t really address the fact that some people eat a lot of different dishes at the same time. Often when I’m picking wine with dinner, I'm pairing it with 4-8 dishes and side-dishes. And they include many different vegetables and spices. Of course, it is easier to explain the ideas with simple ingredients and recipes, but it would be so helpful if someone would cover this real-world scenario.
That's a wild list of snacks to pair with wine. Most of these things, if it came across to me in my craziest college days, I would pair with vodka and weed, and not even think of wine. The last one looks like dog snack. 😅 My favorite cheap snack to pair with wine is cream cracker. I love - well, I've actually gotten used - to pair it with any kind of red wine, but, in my unfornatelly huge experience, it goes better with cheaper Rioja or Ribera del Duero, Douro or Rhone blends that don't bring in a lot of oak. I'm actually disappointed that your wife didn't bring Cream Crackers...step it up, mrs Baum!!! I kinda of love those small packages with sliced yellow cheese with Sangiovese or argentinian Malbecs or Merlot based Bordeaux.
This weekend I opened a bottle of Testalonga el bandito mangaliza, a dry white made from the harslevelu grape. The fist day I paired it with Cripsy duck pancakes, it went well with the duck by itself, it had plenty of acid to cut through the fat but didn't add much to the hoisin sauce and the second day I had it with pork fillet covered in a peppercorn sauce, not a perfect pairing but enjoyable nonetheless
Sweet Gewürztraminer with ham, like Serrano. Basically everything that works when you pair it with melon, should work if you replace the melon with sweet Gewürztraminer.
marinated pickles and sweet riesling Butter popcorn and oak aged chardonnay pinot noir and milk chocolate worst was boiled egg with dry rose also m&m's cookies and oreo should probably well with recioto
DOTS candy, black licorice, peanut brittle... potato chips with garlic and sage added to the bag with a vigorous shaking are things I get funny looks for pairing. 😄
i was working at a cafe over the summer and having one of the brownies there for a snack then i poured a cup of some of the pinot grigio we served and i was surprised at how well they mixed
my local grocery store started selling pouches of already boiled eggs. 6 pack of those and some wavey pringles and im sold on a slim jim and green onions. lol. i swear they should sell this stuff in packs. instead of the meat and cheese stick.
Think my favourite combination are some kind of paprika crisps with off-dry riesling. Apart from that I usually do not combine snacks with wine because I often did not have a clou what to combine. This might change now after this video which I think was one of your most interesting ones just because it is usually easy to find out what wine to combine with lets say lobster but if you try to ask google for more everyday combinations like you did here you will not find anything most of the time. So: MANY THANKS!!!
Having seen it all, bleu cheese and port, sauternes and foie gras, iberca ham and SGN riesling, it's amazing to me how drinkers apply such rigor to the "right and correct pairings" Years ago I had a wine buyer, say... fuck it, I will eat fish with a cabernet, because the wine tastes great. After all this time and exposure to master somms, MW's, and that one uncouth wine buyer, I tend to pick the wine first based on what I want to drink and figure out the meal. Just like in Sideways. cheval Blanc in a fast food restaurant... YES PLEASE!
Konstantin, i hope all is well with you. I just watched your snack food and wine pairing videos, interesting. I do have a challenge for you: would you be willing to build a dinner menu for me and in which order, based on the following wines: Yquem 1967 - Haut Brion 1989 - Cheval Blanc 1998 - Latour 2010 - Louis Roederer Cristal 2008. I do love your videos, you are a great ambassador of wine for all . Thank you Konstantin
I drink whatever wine i want to red or white wine any kind of food. I don't care if it pairs well. Or what rich wine snobby people say is appropriate for wine pairing I like what I like. And that is all that matters to me. Drink what you like not what rich snobby people people tell you what to eat with your wine
Love to see Cota 45 featured here. Their unfortified Jerez wines are one of the most interesting discoveries for me in the last years and the wines are just fantastic
Bro, you gotta get a rice cooker. With a veggies tray. You can put an entire stir fry in it and go drink and come back to an entire pow wow to chow down on. lo mein! Mascato, Or. Reisling. hahah
At least the marshmallows here in the states have a pronounced vanilla flavor. I think a sweet cider or better yet a blueberry wine would go great with them. A blueberry would go well with a s'more too....I think. I haven't tried it....yet. maybe this fall.
Gotta say that both the slightly spicy chips and salty peanuts both scream "kabinett" to me. Mosel kabinetts works rather well in many areas and works just as well to drink alone as it does as a food wine 🙂
The egg and wine diet sounds crazy... Four eggs and a 13% abv bottle of wine adds up to less than 1000 calories per day, so you'd be starving yourself 😂
I usually drink wine with my heart or my body, that's why this desire to talk about pairing food in the wine world is so "verkopft" for me. I would argue that Riesling, Pinot Noir or Cremant all fit for any sort of crisps, and it's not the end of the word when you drink a 1995 Opus One with smoked salmon ;-)
Some of your pairings were a little odd in my mind (the M&M cookie, the canned fish, and the peanuts [particularly with the Kabinett riesling]) but overall I enjoyed this. Since I live in America, we are known for pizza (both homemade and fast-food). In the case of the latter, I enjoy Papa John's pizza (fast food akin to Domino's) and a higher-end Bordeaux or extracted California (Napa) Cab or blend. It's a guilty pleasure I don't enjoy often but is one of my favourites.

I worked at a restaurant about 10 years ago and during the summer off-season we would have weekly classes and this was my particular favorite. Wine with junk food. Such a fun exercise.
More of these wine pairing vids please!
Blue cheese and botrytis wine (Sauternes, Tokají or TBA) is just magical, where 2+2 becomes 5!!
My favourite snack match? LBV Port & stilton cheese.
Doesn't get much better.
Would love to see a similar video with proper savory restaurant dishes!
Yes!!!!
agree! What to pair with a Cordon-Bleu? :D
Noted!
@@mtw23 I would guess Pinot Noir or Chardonnay.
😂
I usually use a jammy old vine Zinfandel for chocolate! Will have to try your idea!
Great video. It shows your versatility given the bizarre snacks.
I’d love to see this subject covered with more conventional dishes, as in meat and potato’s. Maybe do standard pairings and more daring pairings.
I was half expecting you to pull out a beer to go with those pretzels
For thai sweet chilli and thai curries or even chinese food i find orange wines that are quite funky (maybe slightly oxidative) go really well.
There is slight sweetness and a little acidity but they're slightly more robust than a comparable white wine so they hold up better to the strong spices, but don't over power the food like a robust red might
More of the pairing videos, loved this one!!
For the Salami another option would have been a Chianti (Classico). Favorite snack/alc combo: Kaviar and Vodka.
Great vid Konstantin. Future cellar tour video planned? Would love to see your collection.
Roasted Marshmallows says gewürztraminer to me
Ooo are you thinking more late harvest or a drier style?
@@tomenright8854 I have not had a late harvest one before, I was thinking dry and fragrant vs off dry.
Lovely video as always
I love beef jerky with read Merlot or blend of Cabernet Sauvignon
There is a vineyard local to me which makes a Merlot and blackberry fruit wine blend that I love pairing with peanut butter cups- it's a bit like having a decadent peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
I had a lot of fun playing along, making my own pairings for each snack before I saw what you picked. This is what I came up with:
herring w/ paprika sauce: rosé
m&m cookies: porter, malmsey madeira
noodles: fino
sweet chilli crisps: riesling kabinett/spätlese
peanuts: white burgundy (e.g. maconnais)
marshmallows: asti
egg: black tea, sake (?)
bacon snack: cava
oreo cookies: ruby port
salami sticks: barbera
I liked all your choices but still came up with different ones. 😃 For the marshmallows and the oreos we had almost the same idea. If not limited to wine: chocolate cookies should pair well with a porter with some sweetness. And the egg really stumped me, although I have a few suggestions.
Nice! I like your picks too!
Ohhh! Manzanilla sherry with Pata Negra ham ❤
Pairing wine with unusual foods is one of my favorite things! This was a lot of fun! One of my favorite snacks is a big bowl of truffle popcorn and Pinot Noir. Although it works with a Syrah too.
We had some Sun Chips which seemed too sweet for me to enjoy normally… so I paired with Napa Chardonnay, and it was perfecto 🎉
Awesome to see the ABC coming out near the end. One of my favorites
Spanish jabugo ham with any decent brut nature cava is one of my favorite matches
it's always a nice game to pair wine and food! it's sometimes overlooked in wine trainings... cool that I mostly came up with the same ideas. Cheers!
I love the Salt and Vinegar Crisps from Funny Frisch. You gotta try them.
It's a great video demystifying the whole big discussion about food and wine pairings. Sometimes, if I have a good to great wine, I enjoy it it with mixed nuts and cheese.
Great video as always!

Doritos Cheese Supreme and Sauternes 🤤
that reaction to the M&M cookies 🤣🤣🤣

"Hello Fresh...Call me". Good thinking, Baum. And my favorite snack with a bottle of wine is another bottle of wine.
Some Roquefort served on a Lotus Biscoff cookie with a glass of 10 y Tawny always gets me in a good mood during a cold winter evening in front of the fire.
Was kinda hoping that you would open a sparkling wine with every snack haha
Thank you Konstantin, really enjoyed this video for the fun and informative content. I mean who doesn’t enjoy a quick snack, and now we can pair them with delicious wines. Cheers!!
Konstantin, your wife has a wicked sense of humor. Marshmallows and Moscato- who knew? Great video.
3:26 !!! I tried that one couple of years ago, very nice one!
My favorite snack/wine pairing is definitely Marcona almonds and manzanilla. I have some olives at the same time as well.

Konstantin! Hello Fresh? You've gone to the dark side 😂
The dark side is pretty tasty
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I love your channel. You are very knowledgeable, but not pretentious. Do you still have the wine you are making?
I do!
Great video. Cheese doodles and a pinot noir is a great match in my opinion
Outstanding pairings ! Cheers 🥂

I think Pinot Noir and the sausages was my best combination.

Living next to the Rocky Mountains, seeing them used to brand marshmallows overseas is a little wild
Champagne and Cheesy Fries yummm
"Real food ingredients" is hysterical. Kind of like the wheat bread I buy labeled as "plant based." ??? I hope so.
Love the video. It would be great to do similar at different restaurant sittings. Great job!
Great idea!
While watching this I had some carmenere with blueberry oatmeal cookies - not bad!
Sweet Gewürztraminer with ham, like Serrano. Basically everything that works when you pair it with melon, should work if you replace the melon with sweet Gewürztraminer.

Ich kann definitiv bestätigen, dass Cup Noodles mit billigem Sauvignon Blanc sehr gut ist 🤝
really fun video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not exactly a snack, but I love pairing champagne with fried chicken, for the same reason as the chips
That was an evil test. Eggs and Viognier for me, please... with bacon, of course.
Nice episode! I really enjoyed it! A colab with a chef would be cool too!

I would love to see some Argentinian wines, specially some Torrontés! did you try it before? its super aromatic, Jasmine flowers everywhere.
Yes, I also have been to Salta before

lol ! not so complicated? your "wife"😉 really made you work hard !!!!

That ABC Chard comes out a lot for you! One day. One day.... ill get my hands on one.
Yes, it’s special
Does vintage matter for German Riesling on the same level as say, Bordeaux?
Was hoping to see you test your pairings. Maybe next episode?
Gotta say that both the slightly spicy chips and salty peanuts both scream "kabinett" to me.
Mosel kabinetts works rather well in many areas and works just as well to drink alone as it does as a food wine 🙂
Popcorn and Cava for Saturday night movies.
Supreme pizza and cool climate shiraz ❤️ 😍
The egg and wine diet sounds crazy... Four eggs and a 13% abv bottle of wine adds up to less than 1000 calories per day, so you'd be starving yourself 😂
But you‘d be drunk so you might not even notice
I usually drink wine with my heart or my body, that's why this desire to talk about pairing food in the wine world is so "verkopft" for me. I would argue that Riesling, Pinot Noir or Cremant all fit for any sort of crisps, and it's not the end of the word when you drink a 1995 Opus One with smoked salmon ;-)
Do you store your port wines standing up or sideways? With natural cork. Ps, love your videoes. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Norway.
Most of them are stored standing up
We call them chips in the US too, but crisps is ok too.

What wine goes with beer? 🍷 🍻 Cheers!
It’s “knock your socks off “ Konstantin. lol
How about beer pairings when the food ingredient is not suitable for your nice wines?
