The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is a soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Cellar Tracker was created in March 2003 by Eric LeVine, whose name predestined him to get into the wine business. He was working for Microsoft at that time and wanted to program a tool to keep track of his wine collection. He soon realized that others would like to use his tool too and it became a big success. Today it is - according to Cellar Tracker - used by hundreds of thousands of users and contains more than 9 million tasting notes.
I found out that there is a ranking of the people with the most tasting notes and number one at this moment is rjonwine who has written close to 48,000 tasting notes since he first signed up in 2004 - which is pretty impressive. Users can write tasting notes, indicate whether they like a wine or whether it is flawed, and then rate it according to the 100-point system.
Out of all the tasting notes that are entered by its users Cellar Tracker creates an average score that you can use to find new, interesting wines. I do not use Cellar Tracker much, but I find it pretty useful as the users tend to be real wine geeks and therefore taste a lot of different wines and I also prefer scores in the 100 points system, just because I also score that way and therefore find it easier to compare scores.
Today I want to find out though whether the cellar tracker scores are useful for finding great wine and I asked Leon to select some highly rated but affordable wines that you should be able to get in most countries so that you can taste along if you want …
My main problem with CT is the ratings. Whereas Vivino has crap wines with really high scores, CT users tend to poo-poo great wines with average to good scores. I find a similar problem with wine Instagram... "ah, 1982 Margaux which I purchased at the estate. Absolutely peak drinking window, perfectly balanced, possibly the best wine I have tasted. 93+"

I’ve been using CT for 15 years now to track my inventory and write notes on my wines, and wines I don’t own that I have tasted. It’s an excellent system, and a great community of wine geeks. Cheers! 🥂
I'm happy to see Rioja being put forward, Spanish wines are really underrated.
Completely underrated. Spanish wine has been offering the best price/quality ratio by a mile for the last 20 years.
@@welshtoro3256 I agree, I've only discovered that since I started living in Spain! The QPR difference compared to France e.g. is quite notable especially for higher end wines.
@@johnd0e25 Spanish wine has also been leading the way with slick marketing and bottle designs making France and Italy look pretty old fashioned and conservative.
100% agreed. Plus, there is an incredible array of denominaciones all over the country. I recently had a bottle of 7 Fuentes (D.O. Valle de la Orotava), and it was perhaps the greatest example of tasting terroir in a wine: sulphur, pepper, and smoke from the volcanic soil of Tenerife. I had it with a spicy pepperoni and mushroom pizza and it was just an absolute joy.
Lopez de Heredia consistently delivers some of the most incredible, aged wines for the price of any other producer in the entire world.
I do look into ct. However, reliabilty strongly depends on the number of notes (to smoothen out outliers). Also, there seems to be a significant bias that boosts the ratings of younger wines, which then levels out over time. With that in mind, ct can be quite a useful tool. Just don't take everything literally, and make up your own minds.
Thank you for reviewing a Rioja wine! I tasted Lopez de Heredia Bostonia Reserva at a tasting many years ago and never looked back! I have also tried the Rioja Alta, Muga, Castillo Ygay, and all of them offer excellent value for the price. Even the more expensive wines are better value than most other regions.

I've been using CT since 2008 ("pinoteer"). Over time, the rating and reviewing quality has improved...perhaps, more experienced tasters and more users, in general. It's nice to see a variety of CT reviews/scores for just about any wine, unlike the one, single professional review/score that you would get from VM or WS, etc. (and often fewer wines reviewed by those publications). I use CT a lot to see how a wine has evolved over time and whether it has reached its prime drinking window. Of course, you have to look closely at: (1) the number of reviews/score for any particular wine (sometimes one person provides lots of high scores), (2) extremely high/low scores from unreliable reviews, and (3) sometimes too few reviews/scores for a reliable consensus. Eric and his team are very responsive to suggestions, too. About ten years ago, because I didn't like that one or two extremely high (or low) scores would skew the average for wines with less than 20 reviews, I asked them to add a median statistic. And, they did so within a short period of time.
Of course, the cellar management features are critical if you have to store, and then find, many hundreds of different bottles of wine in your cellar.

Cellar Tracker's interface can be intimidating (or messy, depending on your outlook), especially compared to Vivino, but then again, it has more options than Vivino, such as keeping track of my collection, purchases, and more.
Doesn't look like I can get the 2012 Ardanza in Norway, but a 2015 vintage is available. Added to my wish list as I type. And the Fontodi is good. Agree with the 90.

Not at all surprised at the score for Vina Ardanza. All of their wines are amazing! I think their 904 is probably their best in terms of QPR and have just finished my case of 2004. Man do I wish I’d bought more! I’ve got an unopened case of 2010 Ardanza, looking forward to trying that soon. Keep up the great work 👍

Great video, I love your content Konstantin! I use CT very much to find and compare wines that I am thinking about purchasing or pulling from my cellar to potentially drink. I definitely do NOT only look at scores in CT, as many have already commented. You have to look at the tasting notes and you can usually tell if the taster/note writer knows what they are talking about. Of course you could be fooled by someone just using buzzwords but I have not found that to be prevalent. What I really do not like about cellartracker is the inconsistency of different reviewers along the 100 pt scale. Overall I think it is the most comprehensive place to find up-to-date tasting notes, and you can always sort out the un-useful reviews.
Every time I drink Rioja, I ask myself why don’t I drink more Rioja?
CT is also good for, as the name suggests, tracking wines in the cellar. Just drank a 1998 CdP based on recommendations from CT users that the wine was at its peak. Very useful. Almost as useful as your videos, Konstantin 😀. Frohe Ostern!

"Affordable Rioja" is a video I'd love to see.
And yes, I've used cellar tracker, it's nice for what it is and probably the best app of its kind, but I had too many wines I couldn't find on it and was too lazy to repeatedpy update it myself.

Great video, I have used CT for about 14 years, mostly for the cellar tracking features (especially with wine held in bond at different places), but I also like to use it to get a view on a wine I don’t know. As others have said, you need to ignore the outliers, quite a lot of users open their 3 year old first growths and then either say they are 100pt+++ or 75pt 🙄 I use the ‘classic’ user interface version as it’s less fussy and I think more focused on tracking wine, but good to see more features coming through. Vina Ardanza Rioja is by far my favourite affordable red. I have a few 2015 and 2012 layed down, I keep buying this to drink on top of it. Stunning wine, I can get it as cheap as £18 or so, absolute no brainer.

Have you ever tried Costco (Kirkland) wines? The Borolo and Rioja are actually great wines especially for the price.

I really enjoy that Viña Ardanza. I did a small Rioja tasting at home recently including it, 4 wines around that price point, the Viña Real Gran Reserva 2014 was similarly good in my opinion.

Had Ardanza a couple weeks ago in Vegas for 78$ at the steakhouse...it was phenomenal! Glad that you scored it that high!
I think CT is all about the tasting notes. There are few users who go around telling people to rate wines when people select “no rating”. Not all TN are good, but there are some clear good raters that you can choose to “follow”.
I'm absolutely obsessed with Spanish wines. Great wines, decent prices, usually underrated. 💗

I enjoy your posts as it helps me to focus on a few new wines to try rather than be overwhelmed by all the wines that are out on the market. Somehow, however, the price ranges you mention vary quite a bit from what I see in Canada for the same wines. Eg the Rioja is closer to $65 or $70 CAD than the price you mentioned which seems to be beyond what can be explained by just the exchange rate, though taxes come in to effect. Also, some wines are not available where I live, for example the Kumeu River. Life is too short to focus on drinking just OK wines.
I will be picking up the Rioja and NZ Chard very soon. I am fortunate to have a number of very good wine stores in my area.

Rose Studio by Miraval [second label] was surprisingly good for me [only 10-12 eu in France] because I was expecting an overrated and snobistic wine.I think Rioja is a good tip,I must try😀!
I really like cellar tracker. I use it almost daily. I will check out any wine from WTSO on cellar tracker before buying it. Or when I am at Costco. Kumeu River is awesome and certainly my favorite of your line up.

I much prefer CellarTracker over Vivino due to the tasting notes. I find them much more informative and I look at recent notes to see if a wine is coming around. The ability to track my purchases and see auction and market prices are also really useful when hunting for an older vintage.
I agree. Users of cellar tracker in general seems to be more serious and knowledgeable about vines than users on vivino. So more helpfull in my opinion.
My favorite use for CT is for monitoring wines I'm aging. Many CT users buy those wines by the case and pop them yearly to see how they're progressing, and they post reviews as they revisit. I'm typically only buying a single bottle so I only have one chance to hopefully open them when they're peaking, and so far CT hasn't done me wrong.

Oooh, Cantemerle! Exited to hear what you think. It's become a budget left-bank classed growth favorite. Easily my most bought wine, such good quality for a nice price! I even have a 2016 on order as we speak. 2009 is my favorite from them at the moment though.
Edit: Watched it, and I understand what you are saying about concentration. I feel the 2016 was less tasteful than the 2009. But at that price, I think it is pretty good value!
Yeah, I know I'm 2 years late to this party. I've never used Cellar Tracker. The scores were tough and pretty much in line with yours. A nice difference from the inflated scoring of most professional wine critics nowadays. I may have to look into CT...

I've been using CT for a few years, especially for help deciding when to open notoriously slow-ripening reds like Antinori 's Villa Antinori chianti classico reserva- or for estimating the drinking window of some of my orphans (Pintia, Seña, Gaja's Barbaresco..)
I prefer not to commit infanticide- my experience with Vivino was : too American, both for wines rated, & tendency to drink (too) young. (Selection for American wines where I live is not great, nor is QPR.)

Use it often to get an idea of the tasting profile of a wine, to see if there are descriptions of flavour that appeal to me or things that I don’t like.
Also an idea of the drinking window.
I totally enjoy your presentations, although a little concerned by the way you remove the cork on your champagne bottles, I hope this does not become a habit. I have become a fan, enjoying your channel. Here are my thoughts on this one. First, regarding the Pitt/Jolie wine, although you say we are all familiar because of the owners, I never heard of it because I pay no attention to what they and other celebrities do. Second, it would be interesting to know whether some increase their ratings on the “underrated” Rioja because they now know it was actually better than they thought. Based on your recommendation I intend to try it. Last, regarding your comment on Chardonnay, my benchmark is Kendall Jackson at about $12 a bottle at local supermarket. Many (most) times I paid far more for wines, but enjoyed them less. I am left wondering if KJ was really better, or I should not have been enjoying it more because it really was not as good as I thought. If the latter, should I strive to learn more and then probably have to pay two or three times as much for the same enjoyment? Frankly, I readily admit that I’m unsure what constitutes an “outstanding” Chardonnay. How do I tell?

CT allows you to see how well an older wine is aging. I'll go there to look up a bottle that's 20 years old and can often find a review that was posted in the past six months which gives me an idea of how well or not well the bottle is currently "showing". That's something you cannot get from any other wine review site. Also because there are so many participants, virtually every wine out there is listed in the database. It's impossible for Jeb, Parker, et. al., to cover every mine but in my experience every whiners in cellar tracker somewhere. The cautions are: if there's a score from only one reviewer and that reviewer doesn't have a lot of white experience then caveat emptor. It's much better when there are at least 3 to 5 reviews especially from reviewers who post a lot.

I was going through a Rioja journey and wasn't convinced... then I tried the 2012 Vina Ardanza and, as you said, mamma mia! Great wine, and now I "get it" regarding Rioja. I've bought pretty much the entire La Rioja Alta line now (including additional bottles of 2012 Vina Ardanza), other than their 890 wine which is very expensive and harder to find.
Exactly! A lot of Riojas all taste the same, and you get tired...until you find one that just knocks you out. I recommend Marqués de Murrieta as well!
Nice video -- thank you. However, I agree with others here that if it is at all possible you should taste the wines blind. Familiar labels and price point are significant biases even if you try hard to ignore them. Not to mention knowing others' ratings.
I don't have cellar tracker. I prefer to experiment myself instead of following other people's preferences. Of all those wines I know the Miraval as I quite like it and in UK is £16-18. BTW, you forgot to mention the Miraval in the description of the wines you tasted. Thanks to you, I'll now try the NZ Chardonnay and the Rioja 🙂

I like it a lot. It doesn't break the bank, and allthough it has it's foibles, I think it is a good representation of what you should expect of even the lowest rung of the left bank classed growths. For the price it is so easy to enjoy without feeling you need a super-special occasion.

Spanish wines are amazing and always a great value. Rioja is amazing but there are so many other regions in Spain that produce just as amazing wine, if not better!
Try wines from the Ribiera del Duero, also the Toro region right next to Ribiera, both produce amazing tempranillo.
My favorite region right now in Spain is Jumilla. You will find amazing monastrell (mouvedre) and garnacha, as well as some other noble grapes used to blend with. The monastrell from the region is just amazing however...
La Rioja Alta got me into wine. I wanted to take the Spanish Wine Scholar but have switched to Italian wine.
kumeu is one of my favourites, and frankly, is an open secret among my burgundy friends. once you get to the single vineyards, the quality gets into stratospheric levels
For me cellar tracker is one of the most reliable tool to check how a wine performs. The most important point really is the user base. Vivino is optimized for easy usability and basically advertises with how easy it is to check a wine everywhere (i.e. target group: Ppl that run into a wine somewhere and have no clue about that wine). Cellar tracker is mostly aimed at ppl that want to keep an overview over their collection (= wine freaks). The only issue is that sometimes there are only few reviews. However, even for wines with few reviews one can (by oneself, not via the app) average a bit over similar vintages. Also, one can check the wine collections of other ppl. You only have 3 reviews for a wine and they were positive? Maybe check the cellar and/or the other reviews of those 3 ppl. Do they like wines you like? Then likely you can rely on those 3 values. Are you totally into burgundy and Barolo and they have 95% nappa cab in their cellars? Well then maybe the reviews dont provide too much info for you.

Cellartracker is so much better than vivino in my opinion. I'm amazed how so few people I know who enjoy wine use it. The only issue is that it's dominated by US users, so often more niche European wines have very few ratings.
I agree and I routinely check cellar tracker ratings against Vivino (and maybe a couple others). In my experience, for any given wine Cellar Tracker ratings are nearly always slightly lower than Vivino’s.

Big difference between the 2012 and 2015, Vivino scores the 2015 higher, in my opinion 2012 way better
My criterion for the value of your videos is "Does it inspire me to try a new wine?" By that standard this was a great video. I am really interested in trying the two chardonnays and the Rioja. The champagne I have tried before and--although I completely believe in the accuracy of your subjective assessment--I drank a Piper Heidsieck that I purchased at the winery in Reims in 1982 and it tasted nothing like what you describe, which tracks with my theory that Champagne has recently settled on a particular style of wine-making that just doesn't appeal to me.
BTW, that's an interesting topic that you might explore some time--the difference between objective standards of quality vs purely subjective flavor preferences. Along those lines, I am not a big fan of Rose, Sangiovese (I much prefer nebbiolo-based wines, such as Barolo), or New Zealand Savignon Blancs, at least the ones I have sampled. I much prefer Sancerre. or some California-based brands whose names I do not recall.

Thanks Tom. I hope you enjoy retasting the wines. Yes, subjective preference and the total experience are also relevant... plus, you tried a very different wine, that has aged if you recently tried that wine. So the taste should be very different!

here in spain we pay 25 usd for the ardanza. (2016). it goes up every year. so does everything from tondonia and marques de murrieta. sadly.
Just caught up with this, interesting, thank you. I think Cellartracker is a brilliant resource but you didn’t point out what’s really special, namely that tasting notes for an individual wine are listed in date order, so you can see how it’s doing recently and also how it was a few years ago. Reading the notes gives an idea of how reliable the drinker is and how much attention to pay to the score. I’ve got 200+ wines in my cellar, many stored for over 30 years so CT is an excellent guide if I’m thinking of producing a wine I haven’t had for several years. I don’t use the average scores (the basis of your vid) at all.
Can you do a video on Chianti Classico recommendations?
In Norway Fontodi's Chianti Classico is just 27€! Their magnum which is 2018 just under 60€. Weird to see a wine which is so much cheaper here, it's usually opposite...
i LOVE cellar tracker (zilya) since my first random encounter with it while I was trying to build my own terrible database for wines I consumed and stored using Google Sheets. It's a great repository and it's taken me from very humble beginnings to only slightly less humble beginnings in wine. Just an awesome place to start if you're new to wine.
Can't forget morellino di Scansano - Brunello - rosso di Montalcino - I think we're asking for a series: typicity of zones, clones..Then could start over on Tempranillo..
Usually use it to find out how long a wine can be stored but if you remember our chat a facebook we already talked about that cellartracker cannot be trusted if you have a wine cellar because most people might not store their wines in a perfect way which is why they usually vote for opening it earlier then people with a cellar should.
Apart from that I have an idea for another tasting video of you. Right now I am sitting here with a bottle of "Süßschwarz" and I thought that it also might be interesting for others if you did a video an grape varieties which were thought to be extinct. Had some amazing stuff in my glass during the last two years like "Grünfränkisch" and "Roter Veltliner" and this might be an interesting topic for you.

I had a Miraval white a couple of months ago, and I have to say that I found it quite enjoyable, I was surprised because I thought it was just a bad product with a good marketing, but it's actually good wine, from your opinion it seems to me that the white is far superior to the rose
Other than Chateau Beaucastel, everything linked to Famille Perrin is purely a marketing excercise.

Компот вроде не забродил, но стоял уже года 3. Решили сделать вино, но стоит уже неделю, а эффекта ноль. Может с дрожжами или сахаром переборщили? Подскажите, что делать?
Просто добавьте чистого спирта/водки и не мучайтесь. Результат будет значительно лучше, чем бодяга из дрожжей с сахаром.

Another awesome tasting on well known wines. I have another idea for future videos - maybe you can do a fun project on what they call “hyper decanting”. I am sure that you already know it well, but many people (especially younger people) seem curious about the effects of putting young wine with lots of tannins (nebbiolo or syrah?) into a blender and running it for 30-60seconds. Several people have tried it before and claimed that it softens the wine but no one of your caliber and i think that will be super fun/educational for many. Just another thought, thanks again!!

Also ich habe mir den 2012 La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva Rioja Spain geholt. Er haut mich jetzt nicht vom Hocker. Er hat auch am zweiten Tag nach Öffnung der Flasche noch eine sehr unangenehme Säure, finde ich.

Hi do you use cellar tracker it seams really user unfriendly too me? Hard to find wines, abbreviations I don’t understand. Use it as a last resort to find ouf age ability of wines.

I use it but not to track a collection as much as look up different bottles, and then share my notes there. Often I am the only one who has written a note on a wine.
