Doesn't even have to be the most expensive wine, it would be just as interesting to see how much the saving in the packaging affects the wine quality compared to similarly priced bottled wines!

I’ve had some decent boxed wine. Here in south Florida, the standard 3-liter boxes, accounting for price reductions when they’re on sale, range from about $12 to about $25. $20 seems to be standard for anything purporting to be decent quality.
A big liquor store that carries some high-end wines, like my nearest branch of Total Wine, will have a few boxes for $40 to $50, maybe even a bit more. Generally $25 is about the limit, which means maybe $7/bottle or slightly more expensive grade, given that 3 liters equals 4 standard 750ml bottles, and that a bag-in-box costs much less to make, ship, and handle than 4 actual bottles.
I don’t think that most people here will pay over $25 a box or so, but I do wonder whether sometimes a rare $40 or $50 box is markedly better.

For videos like this, I think it would be useful to mention if the bottles are good places to start learning about a region or varietal. For example, you’re on a budget and just starting, would that Riesling allow you to learn anything meaningful about Riesling?

What is worth looking for are their limited or special edition wines, there can be some good wines - but if you do find them make sure you stock up as soon as you can. I know someone who used to work in the wine industry and sometimes the producers will have a quantity of wine left that's too small for a really big supermarket or for a brandname and they'll sell them via Aldi but every store might only get a case or two.

Great to see you seriously reviewing these cheaper wines seriously, without completely roasting people on a budget! Even if I now drink mostly more expensive wines, there are still those occasions where I want a decent 5-10 euro bottle, such as when hosting a large party. I agree with one of the other commenters: it would be really interesting to see a test of some more expensive bag-in-box wines. It seems to me that packaging form is basically having the same issue as the screw cap once faced, just magnified. I guess it depends on where you are though. From my time here I know that French supermarkets often sell pretty decent wines in that packaging, but it is still quite rare here in the Netherlands.

19:55 - about adding international wines into local autochthon varieties - I had a nice talk with winery owner on Zakynthos island. His first wine of the winery was a mix of local variety Augostiatis and 20% of CabSauvignon. He told that this a trend indeed to add that international wines to local, but it was in 2000s and now it should not be like this typically.
But as I see in your video that there are still some wineries who are in there.

I’ve been finding some real jems a aldi lately. Unfortunately none of them are on your table. In particular a rather good rioja 2018 vintage in store in 2024. A few good Cabernet Sauvignon’s, Malbec’s a couple decent Rieslings. A surprisingly good Zinfandel. I don’t know how the region affects what the store carries but the ones around me have a decent selection.

I once heard that bottled water has an expiration date not because the water goes bad, but rather because the bottle goes bad. I guess with a bag in a box it might be the same and it might only work for something that's expected to be consumed very fresh. So while it could be of better quality, it should still be something that's ready to consume immediately once it hits the market.

The Simmel Edeka (Taufkirchen) I go to is absolutely top notch.. I bought a Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese '21 (for 17€!!!!), a Markus Molitor Zeltingen Sonnenuhr GG '20 (25€) and most lately a Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva '18 (25€).
They also have a pretty wide selection of sparkling wines, including Champagne..

This is certainly a deep dive, on more than one level. Personally, I think Konstantin Baum deserves a special medal for this, perhaps The Modern German Of The Year award, presented by Werner Herzog..
That said, there is a thing where people buy tetrapaks of cheap wine with the specific intention of creating punch, for a party, and they CAN be used in this way as the horrible taste of the tetrapak goes with dilution. You could make a St Clements with a kick by adding top Florida orange juice, Cointreau, fizzy lemonade, ice, mint leaves and a strawberry to the tetrapak, of course this has NOTHING to do with wine.. 🤣🤣🤣Nice one Konstantin!

Some wines at Aldi are present for just a very short time. They often have wines from the austrian producer Hillinger, in varying grapes. The Grüner Veltliner was not converting me into a fan of Veltliner, but it was enjoyable. The Blauburgunder has always been a profound example of this grape. For ca 3 weeks last month they had a sicilian Zibibbo, which also was not like an earthquake, but it was an unexpected experience regarding the overall spectrum of aldi wines aromas.
But of course, i take these wines occasionally on my shopping tour for the weekend. If i want to buy wine, i have other resources.

Fun tasting. But also a bit silly. I mean what kind of wine do you expect to find at that pricepoint? Personally I'm a 'value hunter', mostly because I can't afford the really expensive stuff, but also because I know there are some true gems out there that won't cost you a leg and an arm. So Konstantin, could you please take us through a flight of entry level wines from some of the noted producers of quality wines? That would be very interesting.

For me Aldi wine section is an interesting place to visit...I once got Pommery Brut for 22euros and I recently got 2021 Lucente Luce (entry level super tuscan) for 12euro per bottle which normally retails for 32euros...dont know about Aldi wines but one can get good deals.

On a different note Konstantin I had question. I have been buying a few German Rieslings over the years, but not drinking them. I finally opened something a few nights ago and was really surprised at just how good it was. Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2013 Goldstopfchen Reisling Spatlese. Wow. It was drinking perfectly. Are you familiar with this producer?

Aldi does a decent 'specially selected' Lebanese wine worth a go - it is usually available in the Autumn range. Bekaa Valley, usual mix of Bx and Rhone varieties.

Shame you didn't have the Aldi "Kiwi-Trail" Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. 4.99 for a fruity, well-balanced wine. Very good.

Hey Konstantin - what are your best suggestions for good Lambruscos? I am a fan but also agree it’s more common to get bad ones than good ones. Curious to hear your thoughts on this!

Great video! Regarding your question: not buying vine at Aldi because alcohol is not healthy therefore if I put my health at risk, I only do it for good stuff 😂
