The best explanation about the Philistines that I’ve heard to date. The DNA tests from the Philistine bodies that have been found near Ashkelon, have confirmed that they are likely from Greece/Aegean area. It’s definitely time for some people to re-educate themselves about the Philistines, and where they came from, such an interesting biblical subject. Thanks for sharing Simcha, and Shana Tova to you and your family!

Yes! They were Greeks, and more precisely Minoans (Cretans). The name "Palestinian" (Palaistínios, in greek), is a corruption of the greek name "Palaisátos", which means "passer-by". Modern Palestinians are Arabs. They share no greek DNA with the Minoan settlers!
Not only the Palestinian Arabs but even modern Jews, and especially those who want to be called Israelites, their origin has nothing to do with the ancient Jews of Palestine, who were of Semitic origin! The majority of modern Israelites are Ashkenazim coming from east Europe and Germany. The language is Yiddish! Ashkenazim are none else but the Khazarians who, during the 7th-8th century A.C., were converted to Judaism!

Testing on bones found in mass Philistine graves from Ashkelon determined them to be from the Aegean, (Greek). Also found were dog and pig bones with evidence they were butchered so they definitely were not Arab or Jewish. The Romans named the region Syria Palestinia after the Philistines who were extinct for almost 800 years as an insult to Jews after the Judean revolt. The sea peoples who harassed Egypt and were repelled by Ramses III. Some of these were Known as the Denyen. Also in Ancient Ireland were the Tuatha Dé Danann (tribe of Dan). The Hebrew tribe of Dan built boats. The Danunu mentioned in ancient writings in Turkey. Tell el-Qadi (now Tel Dan) was the city of Dan. The Egyptians even hired Danite meceneries. When Canaan was subdued and the 12 tribes received their portion, the tribe of Dan received a small portion on the coast and went from there. Scientific discoveries don’t always agree with politics.

The "Philistines" were coming from the Aegian area. We have found ancient Egyptian artifacts in the Greek islands and mainland and vice versa. We have found ancient greek artifacts on the shores of east Med. The island is actually Crete. There were three ancient peoples there: the Eteo Cretans, or Original Cretans, the Pelasgi who came between 2200 and 1600 BC, and the Kudonians. The migration to Canaan in the Late Bronze Age led to elements of these three peoples, plus people from mainland Greece, coming into the Holy Land. Thus the Bible, uses the old names Peleset or Pelthites (Egyptian for Pelasgi) and Cherethites for all these people's, taking these names from the Pelasgi and Eteo Cretans.

The Philistines (Hebrew pelishtim) were a non-Semitic people who settled in the southern coastal area of Canaan, which became known as Philistia (Hebrew pelesheth). They are well known from the Old Testament for often warring with the Israelites.
      Name
The etymology of the word “Philistines” is unknown, though it is doubtless of Indo-European origin. Already in the 12th century BCE the Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses III knows them as the plst, and later the Assyrians called Philistia Palashtu or Pilistu. In the Septuagint Old Testament the word “Philistines” is often rendered “foreigners” (Greek allophuloi), though in the Pentateuch and Joshua it is transliterated as Phulistim or suchlike.
      Origin
There is a general consensus that the Philistines originally came from the Aegean area. Various aspects of their material culture support this. For example, the earliest Philistine pottery is continuous with Mycenaean (Late Helladic) IIIC pottery. The Old Testament is more specific, claiming several times that the Philistines came from Caphtor (Jer 47:4; Amos 9:7; compare Gen 10:14 [according to some translations]; Deut 2:23), which is widely believed to denote Crete, the inhabitants of which were called Keftiu by the ancient Egyptians. Note, for example, that the kilted Keftiu depicted bearing tribute in the Egyptian tomb of the vizier Rekhmire in Thebes (ca. 1450 BCE) strongly resemble the Cretans represented in the palace of Knossos in Crete. Again, in the anti-Philistine oracles in Ezek 25:16 and Zeph 2:5, they are called Cherethites (Cretans).
Outside the Bible the Philistines (plst) are first mentioned in Rameses III’s mortuary temple at Medinet Habu (in Thebes) as one of the sea peoples (alongside the Tjeker, Shekelesh, Denyen, and Weshesh) whom the Egyptians defeated in a sea and land battle in the king’s eighth year, ca. 1175 BCE. This migration of sea peoples was part of the turmoil occurring in the Near East at the end of the Late Bronze Age. In Rameses III’s temple the Philistines are depicted wearing a distinctive plumed helmet or feathered headdress. (Interestingly, a similar plumed head-dressed person is attested as one of the signs on the Phaistos disk from Crete dating from ca. 1600 BCE.) Shortly after their defeat by the Egyptians, the Philistines settled down on the southern coast of Canaan, where they are well attested archaeologically from the 12th century BCE onwards. Certain Cypriot aspects of their material culture suggest that some Philistines may have reached Canaan via Cyprus; compare Num 24:24, “ships shall come forth from Kittim [Cyprus] and afflict…Eber [the Hebrews].
Philistia was in a fertile plain, though there were some sand dunes in the south. It extended from Joppa in the north to Wadi Ghazzeh (south of Gaza) in the south, and the Philistines often attempted to extend beyond this region. However, the Old Testament singles out five cities within Philistia as being especially associated with the Philistines. These are Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and Gath. The names of the first three are still preserved in the modern towns, while the fourth, Ekron, is confidently equated with Tel Miqne. Gath is now generally equated with Tell es-Safi. The first three cities are near the coast and the other two are further inland in the area known as the Shephelah. The fact that part of the Promised Land remained in the hands of the Philistines is “anticipated” in Noah’s blessing of Japheth (ancestor of the Mediterranean races) in Gen 9:27, “May God make space for Japheth, and let him live in the tents of Shem,” Shem as its ancestor symbolizing Israel
Finally, two subsequent developments are worth noting here. First, it is ironic that the Israelites’ great enemy, the Philistines, ended up giving their name to the land of Israel. Although their name was originally confined to the coastal strip of Philistia (a meaning still attested in Assyrian records from the period of their domination), from the time of Herodotus in the mid-5th century BCE onwards we find the name in the form Palestine being used by the Greeks to refer to the entire land of Israel. The name was also employed by many subsequent Roman authors, and from 135 CE the Jews were incorporated into the Roman province of Palestine, a name which has been widely used for the area ever since.
Secondly, in much more recent times, the term “philistine” became a term for an uncultivated person. This arose from the negative portrayal of the Philistines in the😢in the Bible. But in fact, as their pottery shows, the Philistines were on a higher cultural level than the Israelites.

Once the Philistine cities were conquered and many of their inhabitants deported to Mesopotamia, any survivors would almost certainly have merged with neighbouring people, and all of those people, whether Jews, Canaanites or later Idumeans, would have eventually become Jewish. So, Simcha Jacobovici is likely correct in the ironic assertion that Jews are indeed the descendants, if only slightly, of their ancient enemies the Philistines.

Dan and Naphtali were born to Rachel’s maid servant Bilhah. There’s good evidence that both tribes were seafarers. I think there are enough connections to assume that Bilhah was a Philistine. The tribe of Dan it’s known to have inhabited many areas of Greece and modern Europe. They were definitely warrior invaders.
I also find it interesting that Dan is not included as part of the remnant in the book of Revelation

So very interesting. Thank you, I learned a lot. It made me think of the native Americans in our USA, They were named by the white European settlers and still carry those names. It is not what they called and still call themselves. For example I live near a Seneca reservation. The people who live there are the Haudenosaunee, a name not even close phonetically. Even names of people are not what they call themselves in their language. It all comes down to whichever culture feels themselves superior to another, calls the other whatever they want, can't be bothered or respectful enough to ask them their name! I could listen to you at length, I loved your Naked Archeologist and I read your books. I hope you keep on making these informative videos.

Herodotus in the 5th century BC wrote about Palestine, saying its inhabitants were circumcised. And Aristotle wrote about Palestine saying there was an ultra-salty lake there (the Dead Sea). In other words, Israel was known in the ancient world as Palestine hundreds of years before the Roman Emperor Hadrian called it Syria-Palestinea. He did not rename as an insult as everyone believes. He was simply referring to it by the ancient name it already had because "Judea" had been destroyed and no longer existed.

The Philistines likely arrived in the Lavant area in huge numbers around 1500 BC. Around that time frame, there was a huge apocalyptic volcanic explosion in the Aegean, from what is the modern-day picturesque island of Santorini, then know as Thera. It is believed to have caused tsunamis in the Mediterranean with 150m high waves, devastating the advanced civilization of the minoans and causing somewhat of a reset to the whole greek region. After such an event, it's likely that the survivors on those i islands had to flee to avoid starvation and find safety.

Very interesting explanation. I have only one objection, being a greek, myself: the names of ancient palestinian cities have no linguistic connection to the greek language, like other greek colonies around the Mediterranean sea. Their religion does not connect to that of the ancient Greece of the times of the Trojan war or the times of Homer, either. My take on this is that Philistines may have started out as a small number of people of aegean origin who very soon mixed up with the locals, creating a new identity. Also, the very few ancient depictions referring to them, do not show anthropological or stylistic relation to Greece of those times. So, I think their relation to Greece is rather minimal, if at all. As for the term Palestina, it was rather a latin term. Truly, palaistes (pronounced: palestìs) in greek, means wrestler. But in the Bible, Palestinians are called Philistaioi (pronounced: Filistèi), anglicized to "Philistines". I don't remember how Palestine is called, it was rather called Philistìa, but Philistines, etymologically differs from Palestinians, in greek. So the connection to palestìs (wrestler) is not supported as a greek origin, although the latin namer rather did use this word to name Palestina. On the other hand, even the word Philistìni in greek, is rather a translation of the hebrew word P'lèshet, not an original greek word. Interestingly, a search for the meaning of the word "Philistine" in greek, renders: barbarous, coarse, uncultured, a man of no interest for the arts. DOES NOT SOUND VERY GREEK, TO ME!!

In the Quran (5:22) They answered: 'Moses, therein live a ferocious people: we will not enter unless they depart from it; but if they do depart from it then we will surely enter it.
Ferocious in Arabic is “Jabareen” which is plural of Jabar.
    A better’s translation would be “Mighty “.
Considering that Israel in the Torah wrestled with God, then the Arabic word also lines up with this explanation.

9:00 That is what we call exonyms. If you take Tacitus' second century work Germania for example. The Germanic tribes didn't call themselves that, they called themselves Suebi, Schwabians, or Suiones, Swedes, or variations on that theme (or Manni, men, as they believed they all descended from Mannus, Latinisation of Manu, the Indo-Iranic name for Noah - hence Allemanni, all men, all sons of Noah) They only adopted the name German after the Romans lost a fight against a tribe, likely Hermunduri who settled in eastern Belgica after Caesar rearranged the place in the Gallic wars, and used the corrupted term Germani, which was quickly adopted by the neighbouring tribes as it promoted fear in the Romans back then. Tacitus refers to the Slavs as Venedi, a Latinised version of the Wends (compare english: to wander), wanderers, which was what their Germanic neighbours called them (even up to recent centuries in some parts), because they liked to wander great distances on foot in order to plunder their neighbours. He refers to the Fenni as a hunter-gatherer nation in the far north. Fenni, finders, another Germanic exonym. These people called themselves Saami or Suomi, obviously the same Finno-Ugric root, but up to this day the outside world uses the term Finn, a Germanic name for hunter-gatherer.

Viking is just a glorified word for pirate. It means wanderers, but referring specifically to seas and waterways. Slavs were also called wanderers by their neighbours (Wends/Venedi) but they did their pirating on foot through forests and fields. And the Scythians were also wanderers, but on horseback as archers and equipped with lassos, so they were the pirates of the steppe.

I remember reading that the etymology for the name Philistine might be something like 'lovers of Hestia', the Greek goddess of the hearth, which if true adds weight to them having Aegean origins. (Don't take my word for it, long time since I read that and don't remember the source, but it's an intriguing proposal either way.)

Agreed. Peleset = Palistes (παλιστης) very interesting. The champion combat described between David and Goliath is consistent with the champion combat of the Iliad. Archaeological evidence has revealed the presence of megaron, typical of ancient Greeks. It is not unreasonable that the Philistines were assimilated.
