- Said to be the most written about lost railway in the UK, The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway was the first through connection between the Midlands and the South Coast when it opened in 1874.
The railway travelled from the Spa town of Bath, through the stunning Mendip Hills, eventually reaching the south coast at Bournemouth.
The line was unique in that it had to be built twice as the single branch line that opened, needed to be expanded immediately as the traffic was overwhelming.
The line was closed in 1966, but thankfully there are many stunning remains to be found. Not least around the cider making town of Shepton Mallet in Somerset.
I take a walk along a couple of miles of this line, exploring Ham Wood Viaduct, the Windsor Tunnels, Bath Road Viaduct, and eventually the majestic Charlton Viaduct, before ending the walk just shy of what used to be Shepton Mallet Charlton Road station.

Wow, those viaducts are something else. Imagine walking all the way instead of detouring. Love the old footage you get, it gives a different reality to them.
Thank you. Hopefully should be able to walk it all within a year or so.
I hope you get to.
Great walk that mate ,
Really interesting… keep em coming !!
I read so much on this railway when i was younger and had a great book on it. Indeed it was so long ago the tunnels up at Bath were still filled in/sealed and i had quiet a lot of thrashing around in the undergrowth to visit the southern portal, unlike these days/
Bet the line would be successful if open now
I love this so much. He's in my town, that thing he was talking about drinking under the viaduct. Well yeah me and my 4 buddies spent many nights drinking and smoking under that bridge then coming home and playing Mario on the Wii. Golden days and we love the representation!!!!
Thanks a lot mate. Glad it brought back some memories!
Thanks heaps mate, Iam in Australia, I love seeing other landscapes, an ole world construction, that brewery, if they say that was built in the 1800s, I find it hard to believe horse an cart people with no power tools, would have built it, they are master pieces those ole buildings. I think our history has been tampered with too, I seen your ole man, for a lecture at the Gold Coast before he was banned, for speaking the truth. Condolences for your sister too brother, being an Icke she would have been a great spirit. Cheers from Australia brother ✌️
Thank you mate. Appreciate the kind message. There is definitely a rabbit hole to explore when it comes to Victorian engineering!
Hiya from another Australian, South East Queensland. The country you walk through, looks so different to our landscape, helps me dream of flying away to the old country where my ancestors came from late 1800's, early 1900's or so says the Family Tree..I thank you for sharing your love of these railways and stomping. Bitter-sweet feelings
A great example of a tree going 'nom, nom' is where I am in Teesside. A place called Hutton Rudby, a bench that has been in the village for I don't know how long, has been 'nom, nommed' so to speak by a massive tree. Fascinating to me. I loved that video as always. Thanks Gaz 😊
Thanks a lot mate
Great viaducts! Might have to get myself that Walk shirt.
Cheers mate
The thing about viaducts is, the view (of the structure ) is better when you're not on them 😅 Carving out cuttings and building embankments is one thing, but building such long viaducts is mind blowing. 4 years to build and later widened 😮.
Interesting stomp , be good when it's fully reopened.
Babycham lol I remember it but never drank it, I usually got away with a shandy that got stronger when no adult was watching 😅
Hi Gareth, great walk and video as always. Thank you so much for all the efforts and work you put into these videos for us to enjoy. A walk and explore you might want to visit us Barnsley Main Colliery and the old Oaks Viaduct that spanned the Deane Valley nearby. Just thought I’d mention it as there’s lots of history around the site.
Keep up the great work!
Oh thank you very much for this!
The headstock still stands and there’s some track there too at the old pit site, I think too there maybe some parts of the old supports for the viaduct in the valley to see but not totally sure.
I must get out and walk more 😊
We're blessed in the country, that's for sure.
intro music was crackin, great video ,
Thanks mate
@@IckeWalks your very welcome i look forward to these i do the same thing in scotland just for fun with my otherhalf i love finding the old railway stations etc
Great video!! Just a small point, Downside is an area of Shepton quite close to the tunnels, so I would imagine that is where the tunnel name originates.
Ah! Thanks for that!
Nice one Gaz, gorgeous viaducts. Although, I have to be honest and say that a particular highlight for me was the TESCO van! That did make me giggle. Cheers mate.
Top ten walking moments, mate. Up there with Abraham Day's Austin Allegro.
@@IckeWalks haha! Yes! He used to ferry his Mrs…Wednes about I’m it 😁
@@LeiceExplore Until the lazy sod turned into sleeping beauty.
I recommend you check out the Somerset Canal Space Walk. 12 miles from Bridgwater to Taunton. You can cycle it too. I live at the start of the walk. You'd be welcome to stay at my house Gareth.
Sounds great mate
Thank you for saying shepum how we yokels do lol
Haha. Thought I'd make an effort
Hayup Gareth great stuff complex viaducts construction an reconstruction how many arches? That old telegraph pole looked ancient, was it ever called the hammerline.ships mallets shipton shepton, I probably should look in to the origins of the place name.
Cheers
Place has a big Roman history too, doesn't it?
You didn't mention that Windsor Hill Tunnel was used to test Concorde Aircraft Engines 🛩
I didn't know that!
I gather it was the Down Tunnel which was contaminated for sometime after, if you google it you're sure to find something about it.
What is the tune in the intro?
Stock music from Artist.io. Can't seem to locate that tune now, though! Sorry.
