That was one of the most comprehensive reviews. Thank you for putting in all that time so we can concentrate on what really matters: riding. :)
Thanks!
Hi I really like your channel can you please do a video sort of like a video downhill clinic?
Yo Phil
Magic Mary literally saved my life from falling into a ravine last November. Much recommend!

You guys bring the best group tests. Sidewall support is paramount to me and you guys are literally the only ones acknowledging how important it is. Please do another group test soon - most of these tyres have updates!
Thanks for doing SO much testing! I have an unusually high level of confidence in your findings. Excellent work.
His reviews are the best. He's so thorough and puts in so much time. Great video.
Just mounted my Magic Mary, super gravity trailstar 29x2.35 tires last night and look what's on RUclips this morning!
As a German, it's funny to hear how you pronounce "Schwalbe". You said "Schwalbeeee" the "e" is short, like the "a" in "a bike". Cool video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
It’s very pleasant to see how competent of a rider this tester is
Hello from Russia, -25C outside. Studded tyres - only they are working on this land of snow and ice =)
Fat bike wins!
Not true...
I used my schwalbe rapid robs last winter... I survived with them even in -25C.
Privet !
winter tire without ice/snow?
Yes. Get used to it. Thank the riders that ride with their bikes on their car racks too. ;)
Fantastic test. Finally a MTB channel doing proper testing. Please do the top ten XC tires next.
I'm riding Ritchey WCS Z-MaxEvolution 2.1 inches, tubeless. They are marvelous in mud, find grip in a decent layer of snow on (very) low pressures and are great all-year tires. Just too much rolling resistance for some summer XC races. For deep snow you can get a Z-Max in plus size (not tested by me), for ice you should really look into getting some spikes.
Specialized used to field absolute greatness for mud slaying! The Captain tire allowed me as a youth getting up the steepest hills in slippery mud, where others had trouble pushing the bike up. It was pure epicness, but the downside was a noticable increase in rolling resistance. Now I can find it via google search on their site, but when browsing it, the tire isn't displayed.
Mary Front,Hans Rear for Weather like this, and for Winterrides with permanent Ice and Snow Icespiker Pro F/R!
I've been riding on Piranha 2.0's there a 26x2.10 and they have been awesome year round, dry, dirt, stone, mud and snow!
Been riding High Roller 27,5x2,35 3c and they're light, good and fun.
But for Enduro racing my last year's favourite is Shortly 27,5x2,5 42a dual ply downhill casing and tubeless.Tubeless is critical on this tyre.
After hitting about 100 rocks hard and often hearing the rims sing on hit's against the rocks, with low tyre pressures 22/24psi or 20/22psi depending on conditions. No punctures!
They are a bit heavy but straight lining everything with less care help's you ride fast.
And tvo Enduro races, three Downhill races and load's of training run's on the same set of tyres they still have lots of life in them. These races where ridden in all possible conditions, terrain, mostly wet but some dry bits.
They are awesome, super predictable/ good grip and really planted.Recommend them to anyone.
Very helpful for winter in southeast US were its wet and muddy this time of the year. Thanks. Exactly the video I was looking for.
pretty happy with my magic Mary from minion dhf rear! magic Mary can be found much cheaper than stated though! got mine for £41 in same spec
Callum Ogden I got two for £42
Magic Mary's are well worth hunting down at a decent price. We grabbed a pair when they were on a 'clearance offer' at £37 each. Best bargain in decent tyres since the On-One floater 26x4 Fat Bike tyres for £47 a pair. :-) Just got to keep checking for good deals & grab them when they come up at a good price.. :-) Have Fun!
@@hairypaulmm7wab195 from where?
@@magnumllama400 It was about 4 seasons ago, can't remember if it was chain reaction or another online retailer but they were a Stock Clearance special offer. Sold the bike 2 years ago with Continental mountain king II tyres fitted, also bought on a special 1/2 price deal. When retailers are getting the latest new stuff in they often flog off their old stock cheap. just got to keep an eye out and jump on them quick.
I have the TRS tire race compound version on the front. Absolutely love it!
This run down came out the day after I change my tyres for the winter. Good news I got Magic Mary's! I picked the 2.5 width though and they look HUGE. Can't wait to get out in the mud!!
Yeah, I'm a little late to the party (LOL) but this type of Comparo is awesome info for us all. The only problem is every couple of years tire companies change compounds and tread patterns, sometimes across their whole rage of product, so this type test is needed every couple of years. It's late Dec 2019, so it's time for another comprehensive review like this. How about it?
Schwalbe magic mary... My favorite too 👍☺
Thanks a lot for this comprehensive review... I’ve noticed that bike radar, particularly with this with presenter, Are coming up on leaps and bounds
One question. Where is winter in this video ? It's snowing, icy and -14 outside right now. WIll these tires be good for me ? No. Because they are not for winter.
Paul G this video is mare aimed at Western European winters which are often wet and slippery, you'll probably find a video on snow and ice three somewhere else on RUclips
dude, I ride XC in the snow with X-king front and maxxis beaver in the back. no problems at all.
Paul G Yeah, this looks like a lovely September day here. I feel like they should say "UK winter" in the title, it's a bit misleading
Hi guys, the day we shot this video isn't when Seb did the actual testing. If it helps here's a quick shot of him riding back to the car on the day of filming, lots of frost and very chilly. Cheers!
imgur.com/KJVZYbT
Paul G They are not for winter where you are you mean. The clues are the English guy doing the vid and the fact that it's a UK channel. Look for something more local to you and stop being a bellend
What a well done test, thank you guys. I was really hoping to see my Onza Ibex representing in there. Pity, but some very usefull information nonetheless.
Nice video, very well done a thorough. But seriously, this isn't anything like the Winter I know. Looks more like late Summer early Fall where I come from.
I personally found out that in some conditions, especially the ones in my country, where there's sticky snow and slippery ice, you're gonna get amazing grip on race kings, x-kings and rekons. I run a 2.2 raceking and it almost never slips, unless you try really hard, and my 2.6 rekon just wouldn't lose grip on ice, uphill, pedalling hard. You may as well consider lower profile wider tyres
Very happy to have that Magic Marry.
Winter :) without snow and ice test.
I'm running the schwalbe Hans Dampf which I would say is one down from the magic Mary, but next set will deffo be Mary upfront and Hans dampf rear
Running the mazxis aggrassi dh casing 2.5wt tires! Way better then the magic Mary! Just my opion
Schwalbe all the way for me!
Have HansDampf F+R for my HT AM bike. And G-One allround for my winter setup road/gravel bike!
I wish Panaracer Fire FR's were available in 27.5 size, they were probably the best tires I ever used in terms of grip on any surface. 8mm deep main blocks and MASSIVE side treads for cornering and all in a true 2.4" (just over actually) case, they were so big they actually made my bike look like a motocross bike they were insane.
This dude is easily the best at bikeradar
Nice vid. I’m just getting back into MTB after a while and this was very well spoken!
Ive used a dirty dan 26x2.35 in deep heavy snow and didnt have a problem at all a few spins but i never got stuck and used it in deep wet mud its a great tyre for the more serious conditions but even normal ones its still great and its absolutely excellent for puncture proof had it for a year and abit now and never had puncture, and im quite heavy too!
I know this video is a few years old, so maybe this is why, but the measurements for the DHF seem off. My 29x2.3 DHF on a 26mm ID rim with ~29/30 PSI measure 2.33 inches. I am actually looking for a slightly smaller tire to fit the back of my Trek Marlin 7... I was running a DHR2 on the stock 20mm ID rims and it fit ok, but if it came out of true even just a little it could rub. Now that I have the slightly wider 26mm ID rims, it's way too big...
MAXXIS High roller 2 is where it's at!
But this wasn't a mud tire test mate...?
I do agree about the sidewall on the Conti. But i have only ridden the Dh casing dont know the differnce...but the sidewall got softer quite fast for me and has proved to be my favorit tyre. The rubber compound is the tackies and longest lasting in my
experience. Compared to the Maxxis where the sideknobs wear really fast
A Minion tread with black chilli rubber and Schwalbe sidewalls is the gold at the end of the rainbow
Great vid', I have a Hans Dampf on the front of all my MTB's, but I am going to try the Majic Mary next time. The front tire is definitely worth the investment, as I have had a blow out on the front with a cheaper tire and crashed down hill. Cheers!
I find that the maxxis dhr 2 is a great on wet roots and mud trails especially with low psi
Michilin! I run the Michilin mud country's and that is what I use all around. Those are my favorite
Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro. That's the only tyre for a true winter.
Running same tires on mine.
Ice spikers are the best. Loads of grip. When I ride them on the pavement it scares people just by the sound they make.
Schwalbe is awful, high price for low quality. Tires with spikes are good for ice but not for snow, for MTB in snow conditions the best are soft rubber mud tires.
Fair point, Mud tires for snow. Ice spikers are not the best for deep snow. I guess that's why they're not called snow spikers. As far as low quality, I would disagree. The only complaint I have against Schwalbe is their Racing Ralph tires wear really fast for a 80$ tire. I guess that's the price I pay for having the industry standard for super light tires.
Kast Noka Schwalbe magic Mary's have amazing grip and good quality they wear quickly because they are designed for performance and are only really good for racing
Magic Mary on the front, Rock Razor on the back - perfect combo
Rob. brown I’ve given up on Rock Razors after ripping blocks off with numerous different tyres 😕
I'm new to mtb but owned dirtbikes all my life. Soft compound always.
Love this review. Literally to the point. Ive chosen to go with his favorite and let me tell you, its disgusting in trails. I now have an advantage in all types of terrains not to mention how they make bike standout. I personally recommend it as well.
I use Maxxis DHR 2 front and rear in a 3.0 for eastern us winters.. although any of these tires would work well
Next year tell your moneyman to hit his wallet on table because you are going to winterland for testing this WINTERTYRES.🤔☝🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Winterland like Finland.
Stil running the stock Schwalbe Smart Sam on my 29'er have done 2000+ km with it without punktures and the tire seems to be able to go another 1500 km before needed to be upgrade, i'm not the best rider as only ride XC on the weekends, and i have 7km both ways on pavement to the trail, so i need to find a tire for dry, mud, snow, rocks, pavement and budget, so might just get another set of Smart Sam tires as they last for a long time and does everything decent.
You should probably look into Schwalbe Rocket Ron or even Nobby Nic. In Performance compound they last long and both offer much more grip than Smart Sam.
BearM304 Smart Sams are the best all rounder I've ever used. Schwalbe have changed the tread pattern recently though, the new one is more like the Nobby Nic and I'm eager to give them a try... Hopefully they're just as good.
Schwalbe performance compound has piss poor grip though, I almost killed myself on Schwalbe performance Hans Dampf tires because of the complete lack of grip on rocks and roots. By far the worst tire I have ever tried, and I have tried MANY tires.
my tyres don't last, hell the summer tyres i used had its sidewall ripped, how the hell do you make your tyres last?
I have always trouble and problems with Mavic.
Schwalbe and continental are very good!
Conti projekt baron is all you need for most of the year riding in Scotland.
60 quid for push bike tyres?! The world has literally gone mad.
That said, my preferred winter setup is Shorty on the front, High Roller rear - both tubeless.
I 've ridden my bike with Magic Marys in -25c, It still had some grip wheres all other tires I have had would turn into plastic.
Is the wetscream tubeless ready?
Awesome level of diligence in this review 👍
Nice summer tire test
sweden here, i feel you
He should have brought that durometer with him out on the trails, and measured the softness of the tires on top of the hill. This is where things get interesting, certain compounds do stiffen up considerably in cold conditions (Maxxis Supertacky & possibly MaxxTerra, Schwalbe Vert- & Trailstar), losing a lot of the initial grip, while others stay relatively soft with still supple grip (Michelin, Continental). At least that were my measurements with a Shore A durometer at around 0°C temperature vs. 20°C temperature. Would be interesting to see the results with their fancy digital durometer, of course that would mean they would have to ride at low temps as well. But if they didn't, you can hardly call this a winter tire test in the first place.
Great video! Many, many hours of testing condensed into just a few minutes. I run a Magic Mary Trailstar with a Snakeskin carcass (lighter than the Super Gravity) and as a front tyre it's amazing. I run it all year round and just change my rear from a fast roller in the summer to something a bit knobblier in the winter. This summer coming I'll get a Rock Razor for the rear but will definitely go for Super Gravity casing as I'm heavy and ride a hardtail over pretty harsh stuff. Probably go for a hard compound as well, not sure yet.
Thanks for watching! We love making these nerdy videos so stay tuned for more like this in 2021!
@@bikeradar I look forward to it!
Is supertrail like the old gravity or snakeskin carcass? Soft should be trailstat, right?
@@hannes6114 I don't know about the new ones but my Trailstar Magic Mary is medium compound. I've got a couple of Muddy Mary's in Vertstar and they're soft, very soft.
Need a bloody enigma machine to work out all these names they use..
Ok - Trailstar should be soft and old super gravity should be the new supertrail.
I believe in maxxis minions 💪🏻💪🏻
Would love a re-do and include Eddy Current, Wild Enduro, and Ice Spiker (and also Magic Mary and DHR2/DHF).
Really good review and I bought myself a couple of SS 29x3.35 Magic Marys as a result. Unfortunately they are not for me. Way too heavy and draggy. Did one ride on them and took them off.
Magic Marys are on my bike rn! Haha love em, and want a pair on my xc hardtail too
WTB all the way! Trail boss rear vig front is the ticket!
I ran 2.30 shorty on 23mm rim, it was felt good, and they measure 2.30 as stated, so did the High Roller 2. 2.1 is definitely too narrow for my liking.
The der kaiser project apex 27.5 by 2.4 on my oozy 345 rims are the best tires I have ever used 200lbs rider using 20 psi in the front 24 in the rear.
bead bite keeps the tires locked on. looking to try a der baron 2.66 in the front.
I think a 25mm rim is too narrow to be testing 2.4 psi tires at low pressure.
My ozzy 26 never gave me trouble but the 345 lets me ride at way lower pressures like 4 to 6 psi less with the same level of support
I have Conti Kaiser Projekts front and back and I love them IMO they are better than a lot of these tyres. But what do I know, I just love ripping them downhill.
incredible work on this video! wow, so much good info. if only you guys would make a similar overview of good XC tires..... pretty please? :)
I like how a lot of people including myself get slightly triggered by these "winter" related videos (GMBN's too) because there's not even any snow just normal semi-muddy trails and above 0 C temperatures lol
Uk ''winter'' almost the same as in Norway summer, so i will take this test as a good summer tyres test for skandinavia :D
They always seem to do videos on the nicer days, maybe because making videos on crappy conditions is not so much fun :-)
He's says he's been testing them in Italy and other places - the video is just pictures to go with the words!
Can the schalbe magic mary jump easy? I am a freerider and like to ride big jumps on a downhill bike, I like grip to go faster but I dont know if it jumps as well, im running maxxis high roller 2's right now
Riam Mey I would suggest the Magic Mary Trailstar foldable non super gravity version. Way lighter than the high roller with more grip. Excellent tire!
No mention of the Specialized 1 year warranty who can match that?
Great video and test!
Good one. The MM is a superb tyre.
I hope you guys will try the new and other tires as well for the next review like some Onza's maybe?
Wow such an intense "winter"
Awesome technical advice
Magic Mary/Hans dampf for me
Great review! I have a legitimate option when my DHF needs renewing.
Why isn't Seb doing all the mtb product reviews for bike radar?
Heck of good testing, thanks.
Greatvideo! How did the wtb tough casing feel as far as damping?
Where i live there is always a good inch of mud on the trails, thus i run maxxis shorty for most of the year, swithcing to ardent's in the hight of summer.
Where is kenda nevegal? It should be one of the best when it comes to mud...
In the south of Italy the trails are never muddy or wet, neither in Winter but are full of rocks and gravel.
What tyres do You think are the best for me?
Nice review. I wonder how my Michelins Wild Mud would compare though.
Hi thanx for the great review!! I've just ordered the Nobby Nic addix in 3.0. But realized that Magic Mary is available in 2.60. Do You know if it's lot shorter in height? 😃
The Schwalbes give nothing but snakebites, I had 1 each day riding at Garda Lake Italy.
Lmao, you call that winter?
Great review!
Can you do a summer tyre review. Theres michelin, goodyear and pirelli coming onboard with a new range. I havent seen many comparative reviews on these against maxxis, schwalbe, wtb, specialised, continental ect...
That's a great idea! We'll chase up Seb to see if he can do a summer tyre review in the future.
@@bikeradar Please do! theres not many reviews out there.
Good test, but Magic Mary durability compromises it's value. As it last half of time as a DHF for example, so you will need two MM to last as one DHF
Why would you put super gravity vs exo? Wouldnt a test with all the company's most robust and softest compounds make way more sense?
Yes. That's a bit dumb.
Nice review but I’m still confused. I’m looking for just a mud specific tire I mean really muddy like rain everyday mud. Which tire for this? I will change in spring summer. Thanks
So a winter test without the winter part. So a slick tire test on snow next?
Can you mount the magic mary downhill version tubeless?
It's not recommended although some people experiment with it. All the SuperGravity versions are tubeless though and have the proper tubeless bead.
Thanks for the info. I'm asking because I found some on sale for 25EUR. :) Wondering if ~1.44kg extra weight over my conti mountain kings is worth it for the rest of the winter. I don't race, so I should probably just try it.
A Non The mountain king is a great tyre for dry trails, low drag, very light. Not very good in the wet,it might be ok on an xc bike.I found it's limitations on a dh bike
It's so cute what people in the UK consider "winter". No wonder fat bikes seem so ridiculous to most Brits.
Living and riding on the Southern Uplands of Scotland, winter means dark, wet, windy and plenty of thick gacky mud. I have a fair collection of bikes for XC, DH, CX and a couple of Fat Bikes, I personally have the most fun riding the Fat Bikes in winter conditions as they allow me to ride locations that the other bikes get bogged down even running mud specific tyres. Fat bikes make perfect sense in rural Scotland, especially in the winter months. :-)
Why is there no Continental Mud King?
where was the mud ? specialized tyres all the way at around£30 can not be beaten for UK conditions
Like what and how you make this one. But i miss the "Continental Trail King".Ithink this one is a great rival to Schwalbe ;)
Ride on my 26" Fun bike the old Rubber Queen and every ride is pure Fun with this tire. (Also in Tubeless).
Wild Grip’r...virtually indestructible
If I was to just buy one, should I focus on a front or back tyre? Currently have a Nobby Nic / Rocket Ron combo.
test the Continental Mudking 2.3 Its awesome
