Hi, can i use any thing else then cd cover ? In some comments below you mentioned acrylic. So any avrylic would do ? With acetone ! Styrofom with acetone was known to me. But this cd cover acrylic with acetone is excellent idea and its in flowing liqud state so that it reaches unreachable corners too. Thansks for sharing idea.
CD cases are made from polystyrene. Polystyrene is used to make a variety of plastic products, because it is fairly easy to manufacture, it is tough and naturally clear, and it can be colored easily (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polystyrene). ABS is a form of polystyrene that has additional qualities which make it perfect for many plastic products that plain polystyrene wouldn't be as suitable for, like automotive and plumbing parts - but like what was shown, it can also be "chemically welded" as well. To make the "glue" as shown, or to join such parts, acetone as shown can be used with either polystyrene or ABS. Last, CDs (and DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, etc) are made from polycarbonate, a different kind of plastic. Acetone won't dissolve it (but can soften and discolor it). Solvents for polycarbonate exist, but I'm not sure you would really want them around the house...
Thank you for this overview. Methylene chloride a volatile and toxic liquid will melt polycarbonate for repairs. Fortunately a brush-on less toxic alternative exists in the plumbing departments called ABS cement in a can, with applicator similar to PVC cement. It is viscous and works well.@@junkbotix
This will only work with certain plastics like ABS and polypropylene, but these are thermoplastics and dissolving them in solvent is not the best way to do it. Getting donor plastic from the same piece is the best way to assure the same plastic formulations. That said, using solvent instead of heat, is going to effect the properties to some degree. It might work, but how well is a bit unpredictable and probably a bit debatable. Will it be good enough? Maybe. Plastic is not exactly a universal or generic product. The chemistry involved is widely varied between plastic types and even within a family of plastic.
100% true but just to not let this video's worth be compleely lattened out, most plastics that you are likely to repair this way are usually the same type, meaning it should work rarely ever or on most stuff you need to repair, at least in my experience working in electronics... I don't believe this would work well for a car bumper, though.
@@Flashahol HDPE is the most common type I end up making repairs to. But If you are like most people we have stuff made from plastics of all types. The cheap hard plastic which is usually a form of polystyrene is probably best done with solvent based glues, like "Airplane glue" or similar. (put a drop on the backside and if it starts to dissolve the plastic, it should work fine. It's cheep and works. All plastics are supposed to have the recycle symbol with a number. From that it is easy to determine the basic plastic family type.. A long time ago, I bought a plastic welder. The adjustable heat type that looks similar to a soldering iron. There are different tips for it including one that you can feed filler rod into. Filler material of all types is readily available for cheap and they have variety packs. I've repaired plastics pf just about all types and know it's going to work before hand because I identify what it is. It's paid for itself many times over. Repair one ATV fender vs buying a replacement and the savings buy you all sorts of consumables for it. You can reinforce with stainless mesh of some material called Fiber Flex, which work on most everything, but is not a true plastic weld. Good stiff to build up weak spots like screw holes and such. BTW, no matter what type you are repairing or the method, avoid breathing the fumes, which can be hazardous,
@@DrJKee I have never found super glue to be all that super. It struggles with polypropylene and polyethylene plastics. Generally I think of it more as a "temporary fix" than a lasting repair. Even on most hard plastics, you get a much better result with solvent based "glues". Won't be as good as new, but the joint will hold better than superglue. IDK, but I think people like the idea of superglue, but it really doesn't perform as advertised and there are good reason for that. But if you like it and are a believer, stick with it! I have alot of broken Motorcycle plastic painted parts. I will use the touch up paint to color it with. also got a GALLON! of industrial Acetone at the thrift store for 3 dollars! Ha! perfect. THANKS!
This is a very good one, thanks! Couple questions: Is it possible to preserve liquid plastic in that state (in case we have leftovers) What would you recommend? In the fridge maybe? And what container type do you suggest? Glass?
Yes you can preserve the excess of disolved polystyrene (both the white foam and cover of CD case are polystyrene) in acetone in covered bottles (not plastics). The glue will hard due to evaporation of acetone. If you use chloroform as solvent or dichlormethane the glue will harden itself after several days doe a transfer polymerisation reaction in the presence of this kind of solvent.
I'm a self employed handyman/mechanic. Did you mix the acetone/acrylic "glue" with blue spray paint? I don't think the closed captioning mentioned what it was.
Tal vez tengas que lijar el plastico de base y en lo posible que la pieza a reparar y el pegamento sean del mismo tipo de plastico. Funciona mejor con ABS. Saludos !

So, can acetone dissolve or melt plastic? And how long does it take before it dries out? I also noticed that the syringe did not melt when you put it on the syringe; that's also plastic, right? 🤔
Si può fare anche su alluminio o materiale similare all'alluminio? Però non uno sull'altro ma affiancati come due lastre da unire uno vicino all'altro.
A small (still expensive) ultrasonic welder will work great too!. with the right tip you can fuse the plastic together with frequency waves. perfect connection!
