I'm pretty sure I've watched most of your videos! Ol' Stone Shot McGee! I wish you would show a picture of your catch at the end of the videos each time! Have a good one!
SRO, thanks for watching, I'm going to try and do a few more Stringer shots on the boat. A lot of times the crew had them gutted, rinsed, weighed and put away before I get back on the boat. But I'll def work on getting some on the boat shots. Thanks for suggestion. Best, Dan
WS, that spot's about 105' on the top if memory serves me. Lions are prevalent on the MG but seem to prefer the smaller bottom, They're on the bigger relief but usually not as numerous. Thanks for watching. Best, Dan
Still another awesome vid from you Dan!!! Really appreciate the sniper shooting from your vantage point. Just a question... you ever lose any of your spears? Say you shoot a fish and it takes off with it? Guess the real question is what size diameter is your shafts? Is it on the heavier side? I noticed Even if you don’t Stone the fish it seems like the fish are not able to take off with it.
Hey Shane, well with the price of shafts, I do everything possible not to lose them! The main part of free shafting is shot placement . You're always trying to "stone" the fish but if that doesn't happen then you're trying to hit it so hard that it can't just swim away. There's a lot that goes with it, knowing the type of terrain you're hunting on, etc. If you're hunting on wrecks or big ledges with caves or other inaccessible areas, than you'd def try and take closer shots. If you're hunting on flat mostly open bottom with good visibility, you can take longer shots. I'm a firm believer in Double Tapping a fish when necessary , it's a lot faster than chasing it around with a spear in it. I only shoot 7.5mm RA shafts. 7 or 8mm shafts will certainly work but to me at least, 7.5mm is the magic diameter! Really glad you're enjoying the videos! Best, Dan
As usual enjoying all your videos. Do you ever use the 'spike' at the end of gun?. Also, I would be interested if you have any shark footage even if it means just avoiding them or learning how to read them and seeing when you decide it is time to go.
Brendon, the spike does come in handy, I mainly use it to slide a flashlight onto it when needed. I have used it to poke off a few sharks when no spears were in the gun. It also is handy for pinning down a struggling fish occasionally. When powerheading, I'll slide the rubber inserts onto it for safe keeping. As a last ditch tool, it can also set off a PH if you have no other option. I do have a lot of Shark videos , I'll look through some of them and see what I can do. Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
AS7, I meant to use the 6' of gun length to block the speared fish from possibly coming off the back end of the shaft. You can also thrust it in front of a speared fish to control where it goes. Best, Dan
BF, I wish that was true. The Bull's are so bad in close to out to the MG in the summer that I try to avoid those areas between May and November now. Multiple Bull's with blood in the water are no joke. I have no desire to kill them and try to avoid if possible. Sometimes there's no way around it and you have to engage. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Adam, bait is only prevalent in mid-late summer out there. If targeting Gags in the summer, just look for a good "show". The trick is to figure out what type of bottom the fish are thick on during your trip. If you find them on say a pinnacle, then explore the other pinnacles in that area. If they're heavy is the Coral, then stay around there. Nothing wrong with running until you find them, but after you do, a good strategy is to stay in that area and work similar bottom. Best, Dan
Nice video Dan, for a second I thought you might pop that jew fish ha ha, I noticed not too many of them in most of your videos , I believe there was one though J W ledge , think that was the name but do you still see alot of them?
Hi Randy, yeah I see quite a few of them. Usually in shallower depths. The deepest I've ever seen them is in 260' on a dragger wreck. They're "usually" not a problem and most spots benefit significantly from their presence. Thanks for watching and the question. Best, Dan
Bob, yeah It's what I call a kill spike. Very useful for stabbing a speared fish if you're out of shafts, also can be used to set off a slip on PH for self protection. One of the neatest unintended advantages of is, that you can slide a flashlight onto it (requires zip tying a piece of hose to the flashlight) and it puts the light right where you need it. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 Awesome! Here in California, I used to have a light on my gun, but the lingcod are so often back in some nook or cranny that I need to have the light in hand so I can angle it quicker.
amazing haul, crazy accuracy. thx for sharing
Thanks Captain! You gotta love it when they're thick! Best, Dan

Looked like a shallower spot on the MG. Is there not many lions there? You are 1 smooth operator. Great VID!

What a stringer?!! What were you referring to when you said “Use gun length to your advantage”?

Man I've watched almost all your videos you rarely run into shark's

I guess the answer to your statement is that I haven't posted much footage with Sharks in them, but we def dive with them...
When you guys work the grounds are you looking for spots with bait shows?
Adam Major there are too many areas. Find the smaller breaks and hit those

Sea Hornet still the gun of choice?
DJ, we make our own guns but they're roughly based on an older Sea Hornet, just using better quality parts. Best, Dan
Stroked 'em. Nice shootin' skipper
Thanks Tom! Trying to put a variety of different stuff out. Best, Dan
Do a lot of your big blacks have hooks in them?
We see a hook in one occasionally, not real common but maybe one or two fish a year.
Dan MacMahon Gotcha thanks for the reply keep up the sick videos
Hey Dan, where did you get that stringer?
JD, we make them ourselves. I buy the material from Spear Crafters and then we bend and form them. They are bad azz for sure. Thanks, Dan
That was a monster at 4:35 ...wondering why you didn’t take him?
Goliath grouper. They're protected.
Charles Crandall ...thanks, I’ve never seen one so didn’t recognize it
@@askip7 Tons of em on the east coast also. I spot them under ledges by their rounded tails vs other groupers
