Boxelder bugs spend most of their time outdoors on rocks, trees, and logs, but come winter, they’ll infest our homes to stay warm and by spring, they’ll emerge from hiding and appear throughout our living spaces.
In this video, we’ll show you how to treat your infestation and how to prevent Boxelder bugs from coming back next winter.
Boxelder bugs measure to be about ½ an inch in length and ⅓ of an inch wide. They’re shaped similarly to sunflower seeds, but they have distinctive red and orange lines on the thorax, wings, and along the edges of their bodies.
Start by inspecting the outer perimeter of your structure. Overwintering pests can use features like vents or chimneys to access to our homes. They can also use openings found along walls, among door seals, window frames, utility openings, and cracks within the foundation. Also, note any damaged or missing window screens. Indoors, you’re looking for pest activity. Overwintering pests will cluster together around heat sources or hide in enclosed cracks and crevices.
Before starting treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, especially when you handle any chemicals.
Begin treatment with Reclaim IT. Reclaim IT is a liquid repellent insecticide concentrate that’s labeled to control over 70 different pests and offers a residual of up to 90 days. Since we're using Reclaim IT as a perimeter treatment, use 1 ounce of Reclaim per gallon of water per 1,000 square feet. Using a pump sprayer, add your water, add Reclaim, shake the solution, and you're ready to start.
Create a barrier around the structure of your home by spraying 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out. Next, spray areas around windows, doors, eaves, air vents, plumbing, garage doors, light fixtures, basement or crawl space openings, and any other openings you may have found.
Next, start your indoor treatment with Pyrid. Pyrid is an insecticide aerosol that delivers a quick knockdown, but has no residual. Apply Pyrid where you've seen pest activity. To apply Pyrid to a broad area, like around a window or along a doorway, make sure the white applicator is attached, shake the can, and spray in swift, sweeping motions. In order to apply Pyrid to cracks or crevices, use the supplied red applicator. Simply remove the white applicator, place the red one, and make sure the straw is affixed in the spout. Stick the applicator in the crevice, and spray in a swift motion along the crevice's length.
Round out your treatment with D-Fense Dust. D-Fense Dust is a ready-to-use insecticidal dust that if left undisturbed, can last for up to 8 months. Use a dust applicator to apply dust in hard to reach areas, like underneath appliances, in wall voids, and in crevices.
You can stop boxelder bugs from entering your home by keeping up with pesticide treatments and addressing the entry points you found during your inspection. Close up small entry points outside of your structure with copper mesh and caulk. Repair damaged screens and door seals. Trim back vegetation, including any overhanging branches from nearby trees.
Finally, be sure to apply Reclaim IT every 90 days for guaranteed control.
Be sure to visit our website for an in-depth guide and access to each of our products. We guarantee that these products and tips will help control boxelder bugs in and around your property, and we offer same day shipping to help you get control quickly.

I see lots of comments saying just use dish soap and water and it does work great for anything that is outdoors but using the chemical above would probably work better for indoor use and not leave a mess on your home appliances and for how much pyrid you actually use the can would probably last a long time so I wouldn't say its a bad purchase. I also have heard that using wd-40 around the outside cracks of your house helps keep a bunch of different critters out. Just tried it today so ill see if the internet's claims are true and how long it lasts.

    1) Dish soap is a chemical
    2) Yes it's very effective
    3) Are you proposing spraying the $hit out of the inside of my house with soapy water?
Regarding point #3, they're not inside my house yet but winter is coming - I bought a house with 3 boxelder maple trees, closest is 50ft from the house. I just spent an hour commiting genocide on a level hitherto unknown but there's no way I can get them all. I just moved out of a house with a drop-dead gorgeous sugar maple that resulted in an unholy infestation.

Comparing dish soap to a pyrethoid is bonkers. If the user is aware of the risks and wants to use it, so be it, but I dont think it's right to post an informational video and pretend theres no risk of spraying your house down with nerve agents. If you've known anyone with parkinsons, you probably would be less prone to accepting that risk.
