3 Bears on 2 Florida Swamp Cameras 2024

With the 5 trail cams I'm getting to identify the travel habits of all the wildlife I'm filming and I may have figured out those routes with the Bear population where I've got my cameras placed!! It's taken about 8 months but I've managed to get what I believe is Mom and 2 yearling offspring in the same camera locations....I've spent half my life in the Chassahowitzka NWR getting my fishing locations figured out and I'm now learning more about all the local wildlife that roam along the Florida Gulf Coast out here in Bayport!!

I'm hoping this trend will continue with a few younger Bears.....These critters seem to be skirting an area with 7 springs to the south and then turning to the north and then back to the east....I'm wondering whether there are still any collared Bears out here....Those 2 together were maybe a year to a year and a 1/2 in age and looked real healthy!!

Thanks!! This has turned out to be the biggest apex predator that inhabits this Wildlife Refuge.....Since tracking them I'm hoping the additional cameras on known travel routes with pay off with more footage!!

Thanks Clifford!! There are so many scents out here especially the hogs that these predators are constantly smelling and looking as they travel.....What I've learned is to get the cameras off the ground at least 6 ft. and don't use straps that will hold a scent....Especially when it comes to Bears!! I've been using augers with ball swivels and so far this seems to work.....The only critter that causes a problem are Pileated Woodpeckers.....They really beat the hell out of a plastic camera......LOL!!

Way cool. How common are public area sightings of these critters? Do they often find themselves in yards or trash cans or do they do their best to stay away from the 2-legged deer population?

Thanks Marc!! Public sightings are rare.....The population might be as high as 50 critters..... They had some that had radio collars.....So far I haven't seen one. There's about 45,000 acres in the Refuge.....If my math is correct 6 miles from my house east to US.19 and then north almost 20 miles.....That's over a 100 sq. miles in there!! There is a small subdivision east of me about 3 miles that have several that roam the area and relax by freezers and refrigerators.....LOL!!

FYI I had one of my cameras stolen today they cut the cable and took the box and all with both locks did a police report with HCS and FWC it’s got a tracker on it with gps I got some footage with the cellular will see if they are smart or dump. Just giving you a heads up.

I'll never say it won't happen because I've already caught someone trespassing during the day in August and someone shot at something at night near a camera location about a month ago ....The best I can figure they are accessing from near Mary's from private property.....More than likely they are being dropped off on 550.....I've got 7 cameras out there now with several watching for any people accessing from the road.....Someone might find them but they would have to be extremely familiar with this place after dark .....If you get a geolocation let me know!!😎

Thanks Rande!! They are at the top of the apex predator list.....Bears, Coyotes, maybe Bobcats(piglets) , and Gators .....They all take up residence out here!!
