- 30th Anniversary Francie - Barbie Doll Review
Limited Edition
Francie is absolutely adorable! I love her Gad-about outfit that she comes with. She was introduced in 1966 and Mattel brought her back as a limited edition doll in 1996 for her 30th anniversary. What are your thoughts?! Please like, comment, subscribe, and share!! I love y'all!

Thanks for sharing this, Jay! Just a little more Francie history: Mattel created Francie as an "experiment" for the new " MOD(ern)" clothes that were influencing American fashion during the mid 60's. . Mattel didn't want to mess with Barbie's image yet and kept her wearing classic American fashions. Francie was so popular that Mattel updated Barbie's look shortly afterwards, and the Modern, younger-looking TNT Barbie was born as well as her fashions!. Check out the Barbie and Francie fashions from this era...the clothes are wild, the colors are vibrant, and the names given to the fashion are alot of fun. This is one of my favorite Barbie eras to collect. Enjoy!
She's so MOD....she's really cool...love her clothes! Those sunglasses are groovy!
I never see that doll before, beautiful doll 🌼
Wow wow! Modern edition of Francie is my dream! Thank you for the review!
First of all THANK YOU for reviewing a Mod Era Repro Doll!~ please do others if you have them/find them. Mod Era is my fav type of Barbie and friends. Also since I am fairly knowledgeable about the era and the accessories for Francie I can hopefully clear up some things. The sunglasses were called "boy watchers" cuz teen girls could wear them and spy on boys but they would not be able to tell cuz the wrap around lenses allowed you to look an almost 180 degrees without moving your head. Also the little brush was for her eyelashes to keep them combed in case they got messed up in play. With the original dolls most times this accessory got lost cuz it was so tiny. Lastly on her body style. she is supposed to be a bit younger than Barbie hence she is not fully developed yet. Hoping this info is helpful. Thanks again for posting this review!
Jay I meant to include the link to the images of boy watchers so you could see all the cool and groovy colors they come in... www.google.com/search?q=boy+watcher+sunglasses&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiEtZGqucfRAhUW4GMKHQa0CAsQ_AUICCgB&biw=1222&bih=571
+Annette Gongora Thank you so much for sharing that information! I had no idea why the glasses looked that way and it's so cool that there's an interesting story behind the style. I really enjoy the mod style as well and hopefully will find more! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share that info :)
Thank you for the link :)
Also, would you please send me suggestions for some other mod era repro dolls you'd like to see?! :)
SURE thanks for asking! I havent checked your videos to see if these are already there, but here are some suggestions... Malibu Barbie, Twist N Turn Barbie 1998 version, Marlo Flip Barbie in Made For Each Other Fashion, Wild Bunch Barbie (this is an AA Francie), Smashin Satin Francie, All That Jazz Barbie (Also a TNT), Stacey Nite Lightning, Marlo Flip Barbie in Red, White and Warm Fashion (there's also a Christie version of this one), and 2009 TNT, Julia Doll Repro. There is more info and pics of all these dolls on this link: www.fashion-doll-guide.com/Vintage-Barbie-Reproductions.html
Oh my! OK, Jay, here's the skinny. In 1959 when Barbie came out, she was new...but the process behind her wasn't. She was a fashion model, but otherwise she was an older teen girl. There were other "teen" dolls out there, but Barbie was the one to collect clothes for. I had a Barbie clone and it was always about the outfits, never the doll itself. Fast forward 5 years and Beatle Mania had set in. Suddenly all things American weren't so glamorous and anything "British" was in. Mattel jumped on the bandwagon with Francie. She was supposed to be the British cousin who wore all the Mod clothes. Her body mold was different because of the Twiggy influence. "Mod" clothes were designed for a slender teen, not the "almost woman" that Barbie was. Look at the Brady Bunch to see what I mean. But Barbie clothes wouldn't fit Francie and vice versa. Oh...interesting note. Panty hose weren't invented until 1964, so Francie didn't get hose, she got the thigh high socks we all wore. It was an interesting time in fashion, being the first time that there was a clear "teen" clothing trend and Francie was the reflection of that.
+Dodi Tov that is so interesting!! Thank you for teaching me something new. It makes total sense now why she has this whole ensemble. It totally looks like something a crazy Beatles teen would wear lol
Francie is not British. She is Barbie's American cousin. Stacey is Barbie's British friend. 😀
that little tooth brush thingy is meant for her eyelashes😊😂
+TNT Matt Thank you for letting me know! I was like WHAT IS THIS!? Lol
This girl got me hooked on VINTAGE Francie. I saw a 1966 Francie for sale online, and got her. This repro isn't as faithful to the original as some of the later ones, but still worthwhile. Her jawline is more "square." Her eyes are a little darker. She's also slightly shorter than vintage Francie. But...she's still worth having.
She is beautiful I like the green outfit too. I'm thinking of getting her at some point. I just recently bought the 35th reproduction Barbie gift set with two outfits etc. I like the clear stands that go to their waist better then the settle stands. I feel the waist stands give the dolls better balance to stand. I might have to order some kasier doll stands in the future. Since I want to display some of the Ken dolls I got. Anyways good review on this doll. Keep up the good videos Jay. Hope you've a good week.
She is so cute! I think the blue piece is not her glasses, it’s a headband 😉
Mattel should make Francie again with a "MODdern" type look to make her personality an old fashion type girl mix with modern personality like Midge in Barbie Dream House series. Beside putting Francie in the collectible Barbie lines they should put her in the play lines.
Green outfit 😍😍
+lupita chochol isn't it lovely!?
she's beautiful
A tooth brush.mines lost.I got this doll in 96 for x mas.She is behind me wearing her outfit and her cool glasses without her shoes cause the heavy socks split them eventually.I would keep them off if i were you because they could split,in order to keep them preserved. That was a bathing suite. Her green hanger is in my box of my doll's clothes.
Great review and you got her for a fab price. Doll not perfectly done, more jowly than the original, and the hair looks a bit wiggy at the front, probably because a different fibre was used. Have the original fashion, and this looks so close quality wise. The only thing that looks different is the go-go boots which they made in a smaller fit. Some fashions had soft flat shoes instead, which were a pain to get on over the stockings. Some fashions had the boy watcher glasses in a rarer colour, same with Clam Diggers. The glasses were a short lived fad, as people were wearing them when driving, causing them to be banned.
isn't she so cute?! I found her at a thrift shop a while ago in mint condition and still have her today👌 she's so much fun❤
+Monica Morgan lucky you!! I would LOVE to find more of these treasures in mint condition in thrift stores.
Love this doll! Have 1 myself. Still mint in box, of course. Your presention of her was great. Made me laugh toward the end after you put her cool sunglasses on her, it appeared as if she peaked from under her sunglasses( they flipped up a little)😊
Would be perfect for display for St. Patrick's day!!
Those eyelashes are one thing I miss from the Vintage Barbies.
+Megan W We definitely need more rooted eyelashes
I agree! I collect the rooted eyelash dolls vintage and current cuz they are so much cooler with this attribute! I am even thinking of adding real eyelashes to some of my MTM dolls that dont currently have them, I think adding the eyelashes would make those barbies pretty much perfect!
I just bought her on eBay!
I love those dolls
+Tunebudy Gamer so do I!
awsome I have her somewhere
I love this one!!! I've always wanted to get a Francie with rooted lashes. I'm curious if she would match up to any Made to Move bodies or how her clothes might look on other body types.
So adorable
+Opal Emeraldz right!?
I remember when this anniversary doll came out. Mine is still in the box next to my other reproduction dolls.
Have a great Toy filled day !
