I thought the former D.A's staff had done the investigation but the D.A. was on the fence whether or not to file charges. Apparently he was going to drop the case but he left it up to his successor (Bragg) to make the decision and here we are.
I keep telling everyone that.
Right, but if you're an ex-President of the USA, you don't the option of keeping it out of the press if you plead guilty to falsifying business records about porn-star-related expenses.

Possibly when Trump told Cohen that he “couldn’t believe they did it (paying off Stormy)” he meant actually paying her off, not stiffing her as he planned. And Cohen was just assuring him that paying her off was the right thing to do, rather than stiffing her. 🤷🏻♀️
