  • Gas, hybrid, plug-in, fully electric; that’s the standard progression a vehicle takes on its path to greener pastures. Take this Cayenne, for example. Introduced 15 years ago, Porsche added a hybrid variant in 2011 and upgraded its capabilities with a plug 4 years later. Over that time, I’ve tested every Cayenne model and this week it’s time to see what this plug-in, or E-Hybrid, has to offer in 2017. 2017 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid Review by Auto Critic Steve Hammes

    The half hearted effort Porsche put into the Cayenne Hybrid clearly shows Porsche is building the hybrid variant of their models just to meet the CAFE standard. Don't make it too obvious, Porsche.

      I use mine as intended by Porsche (i.e. charged up every night, live in town, occasionally go on road trips). Over 4,000 miles I've done so far, my average MPG (US) is 36, and I drive like a LUNATIC.

    $90,000 and no backup camera so overkill for that price without the actual safety features that are standard on all cars today Porsche have to go back to the drawing board with that

      You can get all these features, soft close doors, keyless entry, single back up cam or surround view, radar cruise control. They are ALL optional extras. Welcome to the world of Porsches.

    I love this car so much, and plug-in hybrids in general. They pay off their carbon debt well within the lifetime of the vehicle. I do wish that the paddle shifters could pull double duty in electric mode. The Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Ioniq use paddle use paddle shifters to modulate regen breaking. I wonder if the Cayenne and Panamara can have that aded with a software update?

      Scientists who study plants and trees confirm that too much carbon isn't good. It's leading to ocean acidification and higher ocean temps, which are killing coral. And EV, range extended EV or plug-in hybrid is 15% cleaner than a gasoline powered car is. A study done a few years ago showed that an EV charged in NY city is so clean that a gasoline car would need to achieve 130mpg to compete. The grid has improved since then and it's getting cleaner all the time.

    Hey Steve. I am really surprised that they don't have more standard features especially considering the prices.

    Well in most of Europe or in Asia, where you have high car taxes, this is the Cayenne to buy. In Finland Cayenne S is 140k €, this hybrid version is 99k. You see my point

      The 20-inch alloys, the panoramic sunroof, special paint colour, 18-way seats with heating. These are ALL optional extras.That's why average Porsche customers spend 30% of base price on options.

    Steve because you test so many vehicles that may be hybrids or electric did you invest in a fast charger so when you have them you don't have wait for the 120V or do you just charge them at the quick chargers around?

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  7 лет назад

      Excellent question! I've thought about it but for now I just plug into my garage outlet. I do have a free Level II charger in the shopping center down the street from my house so I often use that to get a faster charge.

    Steve, when will the redesign of the Cayenne coming? And I'm with you on Porsche's pricing structure on options. Do you need a $5000+ option package for just basic safety needs?

      Billy Sou Hi, Billy. From what I hear it's slated to arrive late this year or early next year built upon the Macan platform.

    for the 2017 ehybrid, do you have to press "e-charge" for the braking to send power to the battery? I noticed it does not unless that button is pressed. If that is the case, can you set that button to always be on?

    Are you sure it doesn't have a back up camera? It was my understanding that it's a federal mandate that every vehicle that is a 2017 or newer in the US is required to have one.....maybe it's 2018.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  7 лет назад

      It's a $660 option my tester didn't have.

    • @stevehammes

      U.S. auto-safety regulators changed federal standards to effectively mandate backup cameras in most new light vehicles sold, starting in 2018.

    So what do we not need in our new car? Anyone?
    Back up camera? Nah, we don’t need it.
    Those side thingy that sense cars next to you? Get rid of those. I don’t like those extended range batteries. Lets give them 14 mile range. That’s all they need.

  • @AP-mn4os

    Or just get the diesel for 35 mpg combined and a 780 mile range. Plug in hybrids are just stupid.

    LMAO, almost $90,000 and it doesn't have stuff that comes standard on a Honda Civic? Porsche buyers really need to tell them to go you know what to themselves if they had any self-respect.

      Porsche buyers are well aware of the option list and cost. We value Porsche design, quality and engineering. Porsche are the most profitable car manufacturer in the world. I don't want keyless entry for security reasons and manage well without a rear view camera - I use my eyes! Halogen lights should be banned on all cars.
