- Today I decided to take a look at PlanetSide 2's current state in terms of development and population. This is a game that has been around for a very long time and with the recent changes being made by DayBreak Game Studios, the future of the game may be different than people were expecting.

no other game is like PS2, simply the best ♥
It's definitely one of the best games I've played in my life!
If only you guys were around back in the olden days.
Closed alpha of PS1 was the shit. Not like it is now.. washed out to what it is now.
We really need a PS3 with updated engine, graphics, and some of that old spice that made the game incredible.
@@WarAuthority I never got a chance to try out PS1. I started playing PS2 about 9 years ago and kind of played it on and off since then. I've heard some great things about it. I am also hoping they have even any sort of plans for PS3 but from what I could find, there aren't any current plans, which is really unfortunate. I'm hoping that maybe that changes soon. PlanetSide Arena was alright but of course it was another Battle Royale that never really turned into anything. But I'm hoping for the best in the future for this franchise!
I miss it. Hope the new devs are good.
Started ps2 in 2022 and it's sad the servers are less pop but there is still a dedicated fan base.Ps2 will never fully die it's a one of a kind❤
There is absolutely no way that 16,000 players play daily. One active continent per server and rarely ever are the maps even full enough to be entirely open. If the game gets this many players, where are they? Seriously, I miss those big fights.
I tried to find the most accurate information possible. As far as I know the website seems to have taken data from the peak player number and represents that as daily players. Whenever I was trying to log in to get footage for this video I was always stuck in queues trying to get into either continent. So I’m assuming this is taking data from every server as well. But I do agree, I miss those big fights too.
What Server r u playing?
@@baraqel7947 I believe I am on Emerald or US East.
@@Velus_ Did i text you? If yes sorry i ment SehtWolf who wrote this comment cuz on Cobalt we dont have population proplems exept for oshur .D
It's the count of unique characters in the previous 28 days

Me too lol😂
This game is so unique and I really hope we eventually see a PS3. I still remember the insane battles in the first several years of the game. Tank lines 50-100 deep shelling random installations, the crown battles that would last hours, and utter mayhem on the front lines regardless of where you spawned.
I wish I was there early on but I do have some memories of some pretty wild experiences. I hope they have any plans for a PS3 sometime in the future.
I played that game back in the day and MY GOD was it something. The best way to describe it was a playable cutscene. Like the most cinematic fight you could think of.
I joined a squad who was attacking a tower. I hoped on a quad and decided to take a detour while the main group walked forward. As I was driving I could see planes above me flying to that tower. Tanks on my right shooting from a distance. Soldiers at the bottom of the tower setting up checkpoints. And the tower was fighting back like wounded animals. Laser shooting in every directions, explosions, planes crashing down from the sky
It was nothing like I had ever played before.
I don't think words can describe enough HOW MANY people they were on screen. Everywhere you looked in every direction something was happening. Fights were happening all over the map
@@zaer-ezart I miss those days for sure. It's an unforgettable experience
i got a 60 kill streak with a turret cannon. I know today I could never do that again. I still have the achievement on my ps4
Every game got it's golden moments and then people move on. To me the decline started when they introduced kill cam.
At prime time on Miller (saturday evening) we had around 600 players in total. As an active player and platoon leader, the slow decreasing amount of players is very noticable. This is and will be my favorite game and I really hope that this game gets a boost from Toadman. It would be a shame to let a game like this go down this way :(
I hate to see such legendary games essentially die especially this way. I hope Toadman can do something with it though for sure.
Who's toadman? Haven't been following the game recently.
@@kiro-fo9qg new developer. Before it was Rogue planrt i guess and before that daybreak and so on. Game ip got sold and Toadman interactive is now in charge for updates n stuff for ps2.
@@kiro-fo9qg Toadman is the new developer for the game. I talked about this in the video if you had seen that part. They've done work on PlanetSide 2 in the past but now they are taking full control of the ship.
Coming up on my 10th anniversary of when I first started playing this amazing game. When I first started, I couldn't really run it, but still had quite a lot of fun.
I think one of the big problems that will never be fixed is the fact that the game has no skill-based matchmaking system. It's all open PVP where two players can 1v1 regardless of skill level; where a new player fresh off the tutorial can drop into a fight against a bunch of guys with 5 K/D average who will clap him out faster than he can even hit the redeploy button. It takes a certain type of player to be able to move past these early failures, and sadly most modern gamers just don't have the endurance for it.
That is definitely one thing that steers people away from a game like PS2. I remember when I first started I was so frustrated because it seemed like it was impossible to play because of how good everyone is. But I got passed it, and it's a shame that most people don't do that anymore. People just stay comfortable with the mainstream games they know and don't want to branch out. But I find it amazing that there are people who are comfortable with a game like this and never gave up on it after all these years.
Ts hard to get started thats true. But the ones who stay will love it :D. This is also a point which makes ps2 so unique.
I get that, that's why i started as a healer, then mechanic. only then do you transition to soldier or sniper. but unlocking enough points to get a mech and going mayham was super fun, despite the level difference.
I don’t remember where or what map or whatever it was but there was a bridge that was super important and needed for transporting ground vehicles, no other game will give the same feeling as having like 100 people fighting over this one bridge, the chaos of tanks, missiles, aircraft all firing at once, looked like a scene from star wars watching all the rounds fly back and forth
In every session you will find something important like that bridge, maybe objective A inside with 2 doors and the only thing you will see for 1hr It's bullets and laser go inside and outside , and u will have to peak shot for less than 1 second otherwise you die. Then some jet will come to kill your platoon and you will see engineers at work deploying sky shields and other things..
And man, it feels good
MMOFPS are very rare and its free to play! Best game I have played in years and I started 1 year ago
Omfg the jumpscare at 0:17
I was hoping someone would notice that lol
The new devs have really been showing us that they are putting in the work and creating REAL changes and REAL fixs! Players base may be smallest its been but the most loyal and dedicated. Its moving in the right direction. You can still find GREAT small/medium fights all over even with 500 players+ at average time zones
Dust 514 was the best, Planet Side 2 is the only thing we got left that isn’t an out right money grab for players.
I completely forgot about that game. What a blast from the past.
Since you played DUST 514 you must have played MAG on Ps3 that was even better
@@miaobrunelle1673 YES! I rented it on Gamefly i think or one of those game rental services
@@Velus_ Nice you are part of the lucky ones that experienced MAG
I haven't played in a long time, but one thing I really loved about PS2 is that people took it the right amount of serious. Like... PLs usually do wanna win, but not to the degree of commitment that something like EVE demands. You could log in, play for the afternoon, and have one or two full campaigns where you felt like you and your squad really did make a difference on the map, but then you could log off and get dinner and not get flamed for it. You wouldn't be cursing your team for losing while you were offline yesterday.
It feels like such a missed direction for FPS to go, like... it's all battle royale now. We got the giant maps with spread out fights, but somehow we lost the coordination and teamwork that made it all so cool!
For anyone that plays. Go in the .ini and set the max fps to 1 fps below your hrz of your monitor..say 144 hrz.. you would set it to 143 allowing it a lil room. Run full potato , use fsr 'driver based' if you use amd gpu. No amdfmf. Anti lag on. . Also in the task manager.. once you are at character select..alt tab and kill the battle eye launcher process in the task manager.. your kills will go up and ull have a more buttery time. Your fire rate is linked to your fps and 144 seems to be stable..if u uncap its all over the place. So match your refresh rate to minimalize latency. Latency..number 1
we need planetside 3 already
There is now way 16000 people play it daily. I do not see the numbers usually there is jsut one active continent these days.
I got my data from a website that seemed to be trustworthy. I also looked into the discord and forums to see what people said they played on and most people use the launcher from DayBreak Games. But I understand what you mean.
these websites tend to count unique logins within a day, not actual number of people playing at any given time
I agree with xio, it's like a ghost town. Maybe some people log in but go afk.
I played the heck out of PS1 with Azure Twilight. When we moved over the PS2, it wasn't clear that organized units could be anywhere near as effective as the game heavily promoted zerging, and I eventually moved on. It's good to see that the game is still around. I feel like I left before it got good.
Great video. Would love to see more PS2 content.
Thanks! I was thinking about making some more soon so stay tuned!
Thanks for making this video. The game despite its flaws is simply incredible
It is truly an incredible game. I’m just glad so many other people have the same view
@@Velus_ I think it just came out like 5-7 yrs too early. Was way ahead of its time and most people didn't have the PCs to run it. It looks great on your pc
@@Infernus25 It was wayyyy ahead of its time for sure! I remember playing it on a crappy laptop I had compared to modern hardware that can run the game at max graphics without breaking a sweat. Even though it makes more sense to play on "performance settings" or whatever makes visibility better, I just enjoy playing the game at max graphics because I just play the game casually here and there and it's fun to just get the full experience in my opinion.
@@Velus_ yeah it's definitely hard to balance the game looking good and then actually having the fps to run the game in the best and biggest fights
Hey! What a great and detailed video. Good job
i just dunno why there isnt planet side 3 yet
I remember trying out for a clan back in 2013. OldSiners I think was the squad leader. Are you out there still lol?
Planetside 2 IS on the ps5, I literally play from the ps5 daily.
Oh good to know!
@@Velus_ however we dont get any updates but Ceres is quite stubborn with staying alive despite VS being overpop most times other factions still win alerts
@@Trickster_224Howcome us PS5 players no longer get any updates? That is very discouraging if this is true....!
The Playstation community was by far the better community compared to the PC version. And "frames win games" isn't a factor when everyone runs the same hardware. They should have kept the game updated and let the community keep proliferating, would have had a great second stream. Even if they deleted Oshur and put in an older version of Esamir, they'd have tons of returning players.
It's sad really. I hope the game bounces back but things look rough right now in it's current situation.
I keep coming back to this game, one of the best of all time.
that brought me wayyyyyy back, might play it again someday
So that’s a lot of players cause almost every single players normally on the exact same server so that’s a 1200 player server most of the time
My Planetside years were 2013-2015, boggles my mind it hasn't been ported to newer direct X modes or some kind of conversion to improve performance.
It was finally moved to DX 11 a while back I think in 22.
I had to stop the video at 0:18 to see something else and i lmao'd
I never heard of this game before, but I downloaded it for the first time. It's actually sad I've never played before, I think I've been missing out.
This game is on PS5, I play it on there. Just to let you know! Also played it on PS4.
Yes! I believe it's the PS4 cross-gen version though.
I’d have to imagine that Ps2 stands as an ongoing tech demo for Ps3
the only true memorable game I've played
Sad to see that PS2 has been infested with cheaters. They made me stop playing any online FPS's entirely. I hope one day they finally make a legit anti-cheat that works across the gaming spectrum, because games like PS2 deserve better.
I was convinced to play this game one time by a friend, it's alright. Even with the tutorial though I am totally lost on how to play though.
Yeah, it can definitely be a little confusing. I remember trying to figure out how to even spawn on a continent or get to any fights and even that felt like a tall task. But once you get into it it is a great experience even after all these years!
I’m trying to get my brother to play this game. He was running over mountains for 10 minutes and when he finally got into a fight, he just kept on dying. I think that the tutorial doesn’t really teach people how to play the game and how to deal with the chaos.
I love this game so much. Even with the hackers in the VS and janky flying. Glory to the Republic!!
Great video! its truly and amazing game!
I'll admit, I've never been very good at FPS games in general. But out of all of them I've played over the years, I'll always have a soft spot for both Planetside 2 and Titanfall. ☺
Planetside 2 is still playable on playstation 5
Is it just me I don't know but I am having huge fps drops in the game like from 70 to 20 for about 3 seconds and it keeps happening every 5 seconds. But when I make the game from 1080 resolution to 720 it runs well. I have a good gaming laptop btw.
Yeah, PS2 is very good game and rare tipe. Favourite for me. but still I think it's very hard on the start of the game, so new players just see that everyone around already good at the game and they quiting because they dieing every time and so quick. Also they could think that its pay to win and don't want to play.
they need to update planetside with a PS5 edition and make it cross platform with PC
I think the population information from your sources is incorrect. 16,000 players per day is completely impossible, even if you count all the servers. The drop in players is significant, a hacker who breaks the game will push the new player away, and the game itself is unforgiving to the new player, and a veteran player can destroy them without a problem..
Feros clan held the game together on PlayStation , most of us dipped so vanu fell off hard. and the other two factions pretty much just had a 1v1 since vanu couldn’t do anything with the major clan gone. Back when feros was in full swing we would have like 100 people in a groups and would zerg bases that the rest of the factions had been fighting over for hours and we’d capture it like 10 mins. Sadly planet side 2 on PlayStation is pretty dead now I believe but it was good while it lasted :P
I loved it, but damn this game is a tragedy. When I first played it, it was horribly optimized for average PCs of the time, and managed to look worse than current gen while also running worse than current gen (because its nicer visuals were out of reach).
By the time I had a PC that could play it smoothly, I discovered the creeping problems with core design flaws - like the fundamental folly of having 3 factions, with different weapons/vehicles; imbalance everywhere, right down to basic hitbox and movement physics issues, and the sheer number of times an epic two hour-long fight was abruptly ended by a third faction not even fighting, but running around grabbing everything while the other two were having fun?
Oh yeah, nothing says fun like "lol, the map you love is over now, you can't play on it, because some people you never actually fought won the map by not fighting anyone."
Then there was the fundamental design flaw of having a small number of insanely massive maps... rather than multiple instances of slightly smaller maps, allowing for a more even distribution of the player base (instead of everyone on one map, with the leftovers running around an empty instance of another).
Ah, and then there were the dubious microtransaction issues, and the way they reduced the air game to a snobby "who can fly backwards" contest...
Absolutely loved the game, in its good moments. But it seemed to be trying relentlessly to stop me from experiencing those moments. And the new player experience? Awful. They desperately needed to trim things down, and strip away any of the mechanics that aggressively interrupted the fun. Instead, they didn't really fix anything, didn't really polish anything, they just... added some things that confused the issue further.
yea im sure they know the importance of anti cheating..
By literally having an anti cheat that cant detect a GOD MODE guy flying with a tank with infinite bullets and aimbot at 500 km/h.
Im sure they REALLY understand how important it is for their profits as well keeping the game healthy.
The same hackers have only been there in Soltech for about.... 1 year.. I mean they cant JUST improve the anti cheat system right? NAH!!!
Well as a TR and NSO player on ps4/ps5 that has around 400 hours i can say the game is slowly dieing. Updates stopped around 2 years ago, Oshur, while it is cool, doesn't work at all due to no building mechanics on console and just has a lot of empty space. Esamir and I guess koltyr have been unplayable since the as well due to been disabled. Overall there are only 3 good maps and no updates. However, when many people decided to play the game it is still a blast i just hope they decide to make a third game.
I dropped the game when Oshur turned out to not really have water. Was hoping to see a completely new way of people playing. Instead it was just a little change and that’s what made me give up on the game
Does the ps4/ps5 version still gets updated??
No I don't believe so, unfortunately.
Daybreak Games never release this game btw lol
Is ps2 crossplay with pc( i play on ps5, but technically, it's the ps4 version)
Wait....what? No more updates for PS at all? Why!?
FREE THE NSO!!!

Do one for EverQuest.
hi stream
Do EVE-Online
10/10
600 steam players
Yeah some of the numbers I got were definitely messed up. But steam players are low at the moment.
So, PlanetSide 2 has only gotten less players, more hackers, less PlayStation support, graphics that have stayed the same for over a decade, and no notable content since release. What a joke.
I could understand a Free to Play game being built up slowly for the first few years, but this is abysmal. It’s so low effort that they didn’t even add a tutorial in game. They made useless “tutorial” videos that you have to watch outside the game. PlanetSide 2 is the most bare-bones game I have ever seen. Halo 1’s unfinished beta was more immersive, and that’s older than I am.
There are free games that are made by teams of less than 10 people that offer more than PlanetSide 2. Even I could make something better. Pathetic since I only know enough about graphic design to make a stick figure, and I only know enough about programming to make said stick figure move forward.
Worst part is that I really wanted to like this game. I really thought it would get good after a tough development. I redownloaded the game every year to try playing it again, and it disappointed me every time. Nothing ever changed, other than the graphics becoming more and more obsolete. I brought friends in with me to try and make it fun, but it wasn’t, and none of the 20 friends I played with on PlanetSide 2 could stand the game for more than 3 hours. PlanetSide 2 is statistically a complete failure.
Admittedly, I have had fun moments, but those moments are only moments. Once they pass, I’m left with a low resolution, clunky, clumsy game that is as big as it is empty and as boring as it is a chore to play.
They’re going to add another vehicle? The game doesn’t need another vehicle, it needs the current vehicles to be reworked so that they are enjoyable to be in. Same with character movement for that matter. All the worst parts of Pixel Gun and GMod’s movement systems went into PlanetSide 2’s. Seems to be tolerable on PC, but consoles are screwed sideways.
I don’t even subscribe to PlanetSide content, so this was a surprising mood killer for me. Still, thanks for letting me know it still isn’t worth playing. I guess I have no reason to give it another try this year after all. Maybe next year. Helldivers 2 will fill the hole in my gamer heart for now.
Yeah a lot of the game's history has had it's fair share of issues. But as far as the graphics go, it's almost twelve years old. I'm not defending the development by any means, because it has had it's rough moments, especially now. But I myself have had some pretty great moments on the game. And as far as console support goes, they dropped it a while ago with updates and such, and me personally I haven't played the game on PlayStation in years. The game runs great for me on PC even on my old parts. But I see what you're saying. Even though you aren't into the game that much, I appreciate you at least checking out the video and the content!
You do not have 20 friends.
Miller is fucking dead though, I don't even play anymore because of this
Not a fan of the pay to upgrade or having to play hours on end for weapons
I miss the days of pay one amount, pick a class and have at it
it's on ps5
I believe it's the PS4 version of the game backwards compatible.
@@Velus_ you would be correct
the gaming industry has been monopolized and this game is a threat to their other properties.
Why use steam? The name of the game in ps2 is latency. Ditch steam

Nothing. Game's dead.
This is obviously TR propaganda.

And?
It's doing horribly and it has been doing horribly for years. They (Enad Global 7) majorly fucked up with PlanetSide Arena because they got greedy (AS USUAL) and it caused the then-slump to turn into a true death spiral that they still haven't been able to get out of.
If you're reading this, DO NOT waste your time in PlanetSide! You will only be spited for trying.
I've been having so much fun playing it. It's greaf
