Beautiful scenery...love Oregon. I grew up in Oregon City, moved in ‘82 and spent 30 years flying in the military. Retired now living near Wash DC, one day I endeavor to fly in Oregon...either fixed or rotary wing would be a dream. Thanks for sharing...gorgeous. Fly Safe.
Why would someone do a "thumbs down"? If it's not your taste in entertainment AND education, please just leave. I LOVE your videos, Maria. Thank you ! ! ! (from AUSTRALIA)
What a thrill for an old earthbound dreamer to see that beautiful scenery passing below. Imagine the amazing lives, human and animal, that you passed over. Maybe they looked up at you and for a moment you were the center of their consciousness. I think how many months that same trip would have taken on foot. The world from your viewpoint is magnificent. Thank you for the ride.
It's funny that you should say that, because sometimes I'm on the ground looking up at a plane flying by far overhead and thinking of the people on board and wondering where they're going and whether they're enjoying the view. Or sometimes I'm way up there (or even down lower in the helicopter), thinking about the people I'm flying over and wondering if they see or hear the plane. The view is great and it's a pleasure to share what I see with so many folks here. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Yesss always love to see Oregon in a video let alone Hoodie!!! Thank you. Always thankful for others to come through. Stay safe! I was intensely looking for a reference for your position. I spotted the river and exclaimed, there’s the Gorge, with grand excitement nonetheless, right as you did! I weed whacked that, the entire outside of the airport for a summer in high school.
Hi Maria, My day job is as a Harbour Tug Captain in Australia. I enjoy the challenges of working in a constantly moving medium. I’ve always had such a great interest in helicopter flight but I’ve never done anything about it. I find your videos really inspiring. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Cheers, Nigel 🍻
I loved the video of you flying into Hood River which was my home town where I was born. I now live in Australia so videos of Hood River really brings back old memories.
Very cool, thanks for flight through the weather.. SoCal pilot Ron here going up to Hood River for September Airshow and check out Aviation Museum.. Been watching Geologist Eric talk about the area as well. Always interesting to see your flights!
You mentioned in your last video that drying cherry orchards can be boring and isn’t glamorous. But views like this video must make it all worth it. Amazing country.
Great visuals on this video. You might consider talking about what it takes to be a helicopter pilot. Also what costs of operating your helicopter like cost per hour, annuals and engine overhaul. Maybe a little insight into planning flights and logistics.
I liked the comment about "now where's the airport?" Interesting note that watching on RUclips you can't see nearly as well as the pilot can so we couldn't see it when you did....
I do want to do more videos like that. The trick is finding the time when the light is good. I’ve already blogged a lot of that stuff, too. www.aneclecticmind.com/ Check out the Flying category or helicopters tag.
That was way cool. I truck to the northwest from Texas and am familiar with where you were at. I've always wanted ta learn ta fly a helicopter and you make it look effortless. Great vid
Great video. I've always wondered what would happen if you needed to perform an autorotation over forests. Are there gaps in the trees that you could land in safely?
@FlyinMAir, What date, what month and what time of day, was this, I'd love to fly this route in MSFS 2020, unfortunely , they do not have a Robinson R-22, in the program, yet, but I will fly it in an Airbus copter, thanks
Yes, it can. I have to say that it is a little easier in a helicopter, when you have the ability to literally STOP in midair and make a 180° turn. But it's still a dangerous game that I don't take lightly.
As far as living there, it is a nice place, but it is CHANGING rapidly. Limits on housing lot sizes have just been cut in half to accommodate more dense housing. It's a pretty in-demand place, and as others have stated, home prices are reflecting that demand. My parents retired there 30 years ago, and the change has not all been good (as happens to any place that is desirable). Great place if you're active (good cycling, mountain sports, and oh yeah, something about the wind and water sports...). Thanks for the ride though. It was fun to pick out places I know.
There was a female navy pilot who made an unauthorized landing, got off the runway, taxi to the nearest hanger and was met by security who brought her to the nearest...you guess it,bathroom!! This happened decades ago and I bet she tells her kids how she locked on to the target!
Is there a super-like button? You wouldn’t mind living here? You say it so nonchalant, but houses here are insanely expensive. Someone I know just bought one of those homes down to the left, in the suburb area. They’re nice, but very cookie cutter. Hella kids grow up around there cuz there’s so many houses in that neighborhood. Also I can see it, but I know my house is on screen for a second.
I came through there for the first time on a road trip back in 2005 and really liked the town. Unfortunately, I was in a long term relationship at the time, and couldn’t make decisions about my own life. I have since fixed that problem, but I really do like where I live now. I could never live in a cookie cutter subdivision home.
FlyingMAir not looking for a greener yard and being happy with your own is best, I can understand that your current home is most likely the best place for you. I’m thankful to hear that you do enjoy your area. You’re very welcome to come back to Hoodie anytime, we’d love that!
What a short trip. Pretty. So strange looking at the clouds from above. U make it look so easy. They did not o.k. u to land. Why did they not tell u if there were planes coming in too? All they ever said was the temp. Who cares? How can u almost touch pavement and not worry about scraping? Why did u land so far from the terminal if u had to pee?
Hi, as a helicopter enthusiast without any license I enjoy your channel and your videos. To improve video quality in postproduction I would like to suggest to use a stabilization software to get rid of camera wobbles due to vibrations. I recommend to use ProDAD Mercalli v4 (www.prodad.com/Video-Stabilization-for-Professionals-30419,l-us.html). Thanks for your work and best regards from Germany!
This particular video was shot with a GoPro Hero 3, which is a pretty old camera without stabilization, and the mount wasn’t quite right. The resulting video was very shaky. I’ve since gotten my hands on a GoPro Hero 7 and fixed the mount so forward facing video should be much smoother from now on. Honestly, editing video is one of my least favorite tasks, as you can probably tell from some of the older stuff on this channel.
Thanks a lot for your reply! I have a Hero 3 as well, and it still does its job. ;-) The Hero 7 with its (improved) built-in stabilization is much better of course. And I know, video editing can be very time consuming… I was curious if the mentioned software could handle the vibrations you've got in this video, so - I hope you don't mind - I downloaded the 1080p version of this video and stabilized it. That you've used a Hero 3 is an important information, because the software can handle different camera types and FOVs. I guess you are curious how the stabilized video looks like; here you can see the result: www.dropbox.com/s/wa2sgqyqrqf5fkq/helicopter_landing_at_hood_river_1080p_stabilized.mp4?dl=0 Please let me know if you have any trouble with the link. This is one of my favorite videos because of the scenery. It was a glorious morning!

Beautiful country especially from a helicopter. Love your videos. Many safe flights. Rotary wing desires on a fix wing budget.

Just in time. 😳
Nice flight! A little scary in the clouds but I'm sure you're used to them by now.
Not used to them at all! I very seldom have to fly above clouds. This was an especially nice flight because there were good views of the ground.

Great video. I've always wondered what would happen if you needed to perform an autorotation over forests. Are there gaps in the trees that you could land in safely?

Looks like a reflection in the bubble of something on the ground?
Hi Maria, I’ve done my ration of scud running and lived to tell about it. I’m fixed wing only; scud running can bite, hard.
Yes, it can. I have to say that it is a little easier in a helicopter, when you have the ability to literally STOP in midair and make a 180° turn. But it's still a dangerous game that I don't take lightly.

@FlyingMAir >>> Is - or could - your helicopter be equipped for IFR flight?
No and no. R44s are VFR only. And that’s okay with me!

There is no tower at hood river. I was making radio calls in the common traffic advisory frequency. There was no one else flying in the area.
How does it work when bad weather forces you to land at a airfield with landing fees? Nb I'm not a pilot
Landing fees are very uncommon for general aviation airports in the US. If I land at an airport with a fee, I pay it. 🤷🏻♀️
