This was *ALMOST* as cool as when I got to buzz the YYC control tower one Sunday night back in 2013 with the News Helicopter! I was on short final, and I got asked, " Can I ask you for a favor? Sure, " We have some kids in the control tower that have been watching planes all evening, and you are the only helicopter, could you come by the control tower? NO PROBLEM!!! So I flew by it at about a nice "safe distance" :-P at window height, flashed the lights and waved. I said " hope that was close enough" ATC:" Oh yeah, that was awesome" Me: " I seen this on a movie before, but it had a different outcome." All I heard was thier mic key up, and a bunch of laughter. The only thing I regretted was not asking if they wanted to bring the kids that were there over to our hangar to look at the news helicopter. But by far that was the coolest thing I did.... so far... :-P Actually, flying the news helicopter during the floods in Calgary and area in June 2013 ranks up there too, but for a different reason. Perhaps some of you have seen my work?
@@S1baar literally same height as the windows of the control tower. Although back then it was the old control tower on the west side of the airport. They were just building that new one between the parallel runways during my days there.
I'm an albertan, I remember watching the flooding on the news and pumping water out of my horse pasture after our driveway was washed out, stranding us. Im sure I watched you!
Thank you for taking the time to make the video.its great to hear both of you laughing. In this day and age all of us on this spec of dust floating through eternity need more laughter.
I’ve considered landing at YVR twice. Once as a diversion, later in response to a call from Air Canada Lost & Found. I got as far as reviewing the VFR arrival procedures on the back of the chart. A tower controller told me that landing at YVR wasn’t a problem, just fly the arrival procedure and be prepared to hold for wake turbulence until they can fit you in a gap between the heavies.
A couple years ago, I was flying a Cessna 172 from Pitt River to Boundary Bay airport (part of my mountain flying course) on a cold, clear winter Saturday morning and as we entered YVR control space the ATC said, "I have no turbines due or in the area. The control space is yours!". So we flew right through the 26R and L approaches and had a perfectly crystal clear view of the entire Vancouver Metro area from 1000ft! It was so awesome! Thanks YVR ATC - you guys really rock!! :-)
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this! I landed on Rwy 13 at YVR in a Cessna 177A Cardinal back in 1992. It was soooo intimidating. I was so nervous. I landed at the proximal end rather than overflying and landing at the far end, which is where I needed to be. As a result I had to taxi the whole runway and man, was it long! I had a 747 waiting for me to get out of the way on Rwy 08 right. The tower kept asking me how I was doing because I was moving so fast the plane wanted to fly! I was hoping on the mains alway down the runway and I could hear the ATC guys laughing in the background! When I finally reached the end of the runway, I looked right to see the 747 starting its role and man was that frightening! It was nearly a mile away (about 15,000m) but it looked HUGE in my eyes!!! The next day, I departed on Rwy 08 left, I think. What an experience that was! I wish they had GoPros and RUclips back then.
Great to see you guys in the air again! I once held up a Concorde departure from Heathrow in a Gazelle!!! Actually 2 Lynx & my cab! We were involved in a security exercise & had priority to land!
Nice to see YVR from a different perspective. I’m usually flying in and out fixed wing at 160 knots as Thunderbird 201 Medevac. I did land a Cherokee 140 on 26L many years ago. A friend of mine flies for Harbour and sometimes they got to fly over Runway 31 from the middle arm to downtown..
Normally only ever see that out of the side of a 747 / 777 what a treat. Thanks it put a smile on my face maybe one day check you guys out for a bit of localised training.
Totally awesome, Mischa! Definitely a high point for you and Sam. I have to wonder about the controllers though, when the high point of their day is a basic two seat helicopter making a touch and go on one of their main runways. Am so praying this entire situation doesn't last too much longer, as I'm sure we all are. It's good to know you're not entirely shut down. Fly safe, sir!
Glad to see you having fun. beautiful day to fly. One time had to do low level hold around the YVR tower in a 222 medevac while a 747 was landing. We had priority due to medevac, to depart the area as soon as the 747 landed. 130-140k ILS approach in the 222 to 26R at YVR mixed in with fixed wing is another fun memory. Thank you for the videos.
Wow guys, flown in and out of there, (Van International), and my folks are on the island in Comox, so the views around Campbell River were epic! Loved how the tower made you sooo welcome! 👍🏻👍🏻
That’s incredible! I have been over a smaller international whilst on a HEMS flight, the scale of the airport and aircraft from a relatively small helicopter(EC145) was unbelievable!
Fun to watch! The guy doing most of the talking was having a great time, which made me have a great time too. Vancouver always looks so good in the sunshine. First time viewer of your channel and I just subscribed.
So cool! ATC were fantastic. The centreline was half the size of the Calibri lol, felt excitement for you guys in this envious situation. This video made my morning. Cheers for sharing and safe in these times
This is so cool!!! Ive built lots of pipelines for oil and gas. So the pipeline patrol aspect of the video was interesting for me. But also being born in Vancouver and living in Abby for a very long time - getting to watch a video of a touch and go in a helicopter on the 26s is such a great and rare opportunity! Thanks for sharing
Giggling like a little school girl up there,I love it. If I could come up with the funding I would love to fly a helicopter and from these videos I know bc helicopters would be my choice.
That was a very awesome video ya'll shared with us here, gentlemen. . . . .😀AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!😀 To bad ATC🏭✈🛩 wouldn't let ya'll fly over at a lower altitude🚁, lol. Thankya again for this video. Very fun just to watch ya'll. How exciting & thankya for bringing us along😎👏👏👏. Please stay safe during this 😷corona virus/covid 19 pandemic😷 & fly safe as always!🚁🚁🚁💖💖💖
Great fun video. Nice to see you and Sam flying together again and it was a treat for us as well to see your responses to the permission, the touch and go and the overfly. I would be interested in seeing a shot of the pipeline to see what your survey trips entail. Take care and stay safe. 👍 🇬🇧 Tim
So Cool! I bet I could do a T&G at NY Kennedy these days in my Rans Coyote II : ) Glad to see you out and about and posting. Hope the wife and young one are doing fine.
Dear Misha, thanks for your wonderful Vlogs as I thoroughly enjoy them. I have been to Vancouver and Whistler for work and as beautiful as that is, it was just the front door you have now opened for me. The terrain is like God's backyard......I love your instructional technique with so much courtesy and gentleness and what I would give to come learn with you is anyone's guess. The cattle mustering pilots here in Oz toss the R22's around in spectacular fashion, which serves to demonstrate how technically capable they are. I would really love to hear you talk about this in a further Vlog. Thanks again a million. Pete
My husband and I fly an R44 & B206 in Johannesburg (FAOR) and ATC there would often let student pilots (not solo!) hover between the two parallel runways
That is pretty cool! I should probabl try to get clearance from our international airport too while it's all quiet in the air. I'm also surprised to see there's a slipstring on the canopy of a helicopter...
I was there in 2004. I began a cruise to Alaska from there! I’m glad you got to enjoy that. It might be a long time till you get a chance to do that again.
Just like the big guys that is awesome!! Bucket list stuff. Must be because of the situation makes it unprecedentedly quiet there. I wonder if they let me do it at YYZ...
You luck buggers, not only flying, but flying a helicopter. And to rub salt into the wound, you get to do a touch and go at Vancouver Airport. I’m green with envy. One day, I would love to go back to Canada and take aTIF with you. Cheers Wiz from Tasmania
I love seeing the scenery around the airport up close. Normally, we don’t get to see that. I’ve been a passenger in a helicopter many times in northern Manitoba and Nunavut. There, we see bush and tundra. A different world !

It's just good to see people laughing. Very nice.
Cool to also see people being nice! Need more of that in the world right now.
i guess I am kind of off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch new series online ?
@Payton Greyson flixportal
@Rogelio Porter Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it!
@Payton Greyson you are welcome xD
To watch you two giggling up there is heart warming at a time of grief and pain all around the world, stay healthy and safe. Thank you.
I loved the pure joy and enthusiasm that you both showed as you crossed over the runway. It definitely brightened my day!
This is what flying is all about.....finding enjoyment in the little things ! Great video !!
The smiles on your faces tell the story..🥰🥰😍🥰🥰🥰🥰
I don't fly but I was smiling the whole way through the video. Excitement and happiness is contagious. Good for you guys 👍 thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video.its great to hear both of you laughing. In this day and age all of us on this spec of dust floating through eternity need more laughter.
that was an honor to ask and get the freedom of the airport. great shots you guys

Very rare opportunity to do a thing like that..... thank you very much appreciated.
Achievement Unlocked!
That's pretty cool to see that tiny ship on that GIIIIIIIANT runway.

Great to see that even large airport controllers see the benefit in new adventures for pilots of small aircraft.
Great to see you guys in the air again!

Misha's laugh is so infectious. I find myself practicing to laugh just like him.
So glad to see two pilots having such a great time, glad you got such a very cool treat. I Liked & Subscribed 👍😎

Love those humans at NavCan... And how stoked you two are for this!! Cant stop smiling 😁
This makes me smile what a instructor to have
Since I’m from the states it’s always been funny to me when landing in Canada that you have big runway stripes and small runway numbers!
Great video!
Gaaahhh!!!!! The band is back together!!! 😍😍😍😍😍👌❤ you two together is magic!
Young, smiling, flying, enjoying life. Got to love it. ❤️

That was cool. Your videos are a great stress buster during this Quarantine days. Hope you have more flights & stay safe.
Traffic in Vancouver is down over 90% of “normal”! Have fun!
Wow guys, flown in and out of there, (Van International), and my folks are on the island in Comox, so the views around Campbell River were epic! Loved how the tower made you sooo welcome! 👍🏻👍🏻
Mischa and his pilot are having a blast, love it!
Wow, you guys make me want to learn how to fly a helicopter! Also, it's fun to see your excitement! Looking forward to the next video.

Once in a lifetime events - lots of fun! Must have had the ATC personnel chuckling as well. Good show!
I did my PPL out of CYVR back in 79. This was cool. Yes they let us do circuits from time to time.
Nice work! Such an awesome opportunity! Nice job NA!
Pros and cons with almost any situation in life. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Hay all you microlight pilots out there, now is your chance.
Very cool! What a privilege, and glad to watch you both enjoy it.
