No they were an actual band! Tony James was an actual musician (formally of Generation X with Billy Idol) who created the band. The rest of the band then taught themselves how to play and they spent 2 years playing Rock N Roll covers. They then started writing their own songs and then got signed to Emi Records. So no marketing untill much later on and people bought their records because they were a breath of fresh air, innovative and exciting. It is actually all the mainstream music - past and present that is pushed on the public through blanket marketing, getting people to listen to generic tosh...
