For years after this hit MTV, I wondered who the detective was. I didn't recognize Rik Mayall. He looks like a young Robert Mitchum. Rik was a standout, just something joyful in all his performances. Thanks for all the laughs Rik. This is just about my all time favorite video from the MTV days.
I'm embarrassed to say that although I've loved this song and video by the Art of Noise, it took about 30 years for me to recognize Rik Mayall as the star of this video. I shall now go hang my head in shame...
I remember when a local radio station would end their broadcast day at 12AM with this song. WZZY 98.3 in Winchester Indiana. A LONG time ago. Gawd, I'm old. haha!
Came here for Duane Eddy search... and completely forgot about AoN version and video! Huge hit in UK, both in 1959 and the 80's? I only saw it a few times on MTV and it made a huge impression. Loved it! My only confusion is it was composed by Henry Mancini FOR? Duane Eddy? Did Eddy immediately cover it, upon release on TV show? Was Henry inspired by Duane? The guitar and sax combo are signature for Duane Eddy hits before and after.
Good fun. I came for Duane Eddy, stayed for the video. The Peter Gunn Theme might have been written specifically for Duane Eddy's particular twanging style of play.
apart from the genius mix of Art of Noise & Rik Mayall, this reminds me of playing Contact Sam Cruise on the ZX Spectrum, and my first love -_- Susan M
He really was fantastic. And so good at playing both incredibly cool and incredibly repulsive characters... How could Richie from Bottom and Lord Flasheart from Blackadder be the same person? I have to say, though, I almost regret that he didn't have more of the 'cool' roles... he's so suave and handsome and charismatic when he wants to be.
The Art of Noise classic hit from 38 years ago, Peter Gunn... what a classic tune it was, and it was made even special with the assistance of the late, great Duane Eddy who passed away 90 minutes ago today. I'm sure he'll be playing from the heavens above and that we will always remember him. The album In Visible ( Invisible ) Silence was one of AON's best efforts, especially this hit and Legs, such memories. I had this CD, and their first album, Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise released 40 years ago, 1984, but they're gone now ( due to missed payments on our storage...😓 ), we'll missed you Duane Eddy and thanks for the sounds that resonates the Art.....of Music 🎶!
March 1986 the group released their version of Peter Gunn [UK: #8], featuring their first guest artist, legendary American guitarist Duane Eddy who had already had a hit with the Henry Mancini composition in 1959. This new version was recorded in Dudley’s living room. It entered the UK singles chart on 22nd March, remaining there for nine weeks. The promotional video for the single was directed by Matt Forrest and featured comedy actor Rik Mayall in the lead role as a private detective.
Same here ! I dont Recall seeing this video I saw the one close to the edit on MTV OR VH1 I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG ON 88.7FM COLLEGE RADIO IN CHICAGO. AON IS TOPS !!
Hey I heard this when I was in fourth grade, I loved it (still love it today in 2021) you will never hear a group like Art of Noise again today which is sad.
Same here. I loved Art of Noise and had no idea what they looked like. I thought they hid out on purpose, maybe to cultivate mystery. Which I thought was cool as hell, but I guess they were around to see and I just missed them.
RIP Duane Eddy... I loved The Art Of Noise in the 80s, but after they disbanded, I decided to give some of Duane's own music a try in the 90s... Absolutely love his guitar-playing style! Very sad that he's no longer with us as of today 😢
Peter Gunn is one of those things that you watched growing up as part of my generation that was a private kind of cool.... the kind that you didn't want to share with anybody else. And to this day the theme of it is absolute gold ., even when I hear it now it leaves you with a tingle down your spine. It is a small beautiful jazz painting made out of musical notes with a dark middle-of-the-night feel
I miss the Duane Eddy version. Down and dirty sax on top of the guitar(s). This version was a pre-wall-of-sound production, but you could hear where they were heading or going, Phil Spector & all his musicians. Da Doo Ron Ron and Then He Kissed Me. This was pre-stereo, right before iirc.
Check out MeTV on Sunday mornings at 3am! He was born the same year as my late father. I'd love to go back in time to meet my mom & dad when they were young. You know, before me and my sister made them older... Love what they did. They raised two great kids!!!

The 80s were The Art of Noise
Oh man... they just played this on Sirius 80s channel. So happy now.
AoN forever ❤️❤️

Holy Shit! First Time I actually saw Peter Gunn actually dancing ...🍻🤘😎
RIP Duane Eddy 86. Loved his guitar 🎸 playing.
Aye mate, he was totally awesome
So long, Duane, you were a true legend.
The Art of Noise were brilliant. It's obvious why they went on to score British films.
Was Eddy on the MTV series The Young Ones ?
And even The Krypton Factor.
The art of noise move in mysterious ways.
Haha..... I knew someone out there is watching this👍
Gorgeous - Mr Mayall does it very brilliantly !
Positive memories of first hearing)( added bonus of a fantastic video RIP Rik ) another Banger from these Legends 😎👍
Before there was STAIRWAY, there was PETER GUNN

He was one of the great guitarists I use to play his records in my youth and still do .
eight years before pulp fiction; credit where credit is due Quentin!
The indistinct voice in the street in the first 25 odd seconds is provided by Rik Mayall. May he RIP.

Hello Paula, How are you doing?
All of a sudden I have this urge to go to the arcade and play Spy Hunter.
The one,the only Rik Mayall. Miss you. :'( R.I.P.

Coolest of the Cool
Is Harry the barman also the barman from Star Wars’ Mos Eisley Cantina?

god bless you rik good actor
All I can think of is "Planet Clair" by B52s
No, the theme tune for Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini came first and then Duane Eddy's 1959 cover,... arsehole.
cloverfield911 Yup thought the same thing.
The B-52s fucking suck

Peter Gunn captured in 5 minutes!
Something tells me the director of the Dick Tracey flick from 1990 saw this video in the early stages of production.
Rick even did his famous ear pop epic 😊
Was this the first electronic remix?
RIP Rik x
God saw that the Universe lacked awesome, and thus he gave us Rik Mayall. But only for 55 years
Rik Mayall enjoyed this I think
1:13 right about now...
This Video Almost Has The FLOW Of Janet Jackson's When I Think Of You!
I envision a homemade video featuring scenes from "Sin City".
Who's here because of the Rudy Coby trick "Four Legs"? :)
Wait what? Thats a very young Rik Mayall there

They did such an over the top GREAT job with doing this Peter Gunn theme. I loved it in the 80s and still love it.
I own the soundtrack vinyl. Both of them.
Rik Mayall was basically awesome in everything he ever did. A perfect work C.V. He's hugely missed.

Art of Noise was amazing. All of their work holds up, it somehow gets even better over the years. Trailblazers.

Amen to that.
The Art of Noise meets the movie The Forbidden Zone.
