My daughter (age 9) is still using our old Pixel 2. It's such a great camera, better than many contemporary models. And it's still on its original battery... Thank you for your work and this comparison. Not perfect, but very useful, thanks from an 8 Pro user!
I dunno , I think that might be overstating it mate , we have had some other fairly decent camera phones over the years. I have had a bunch of smartphones from Samsung, LG , nexus , Huawei , a couple of iPhones , and a pixel 8 pro as well , and to this day some of my favourite pics I have ever taken where with old galaxy’s , even my LG G5 still has some of my best all time favourite shots still to this day .
@@ReneTerrago He means it's not about the tool but the photographer. You can have the best camera in the world but if you bad at taking photos, it's still bad.
i always was an iphone guy but since pixel 4 came out i wanted it so badly and always said that pixel is best phote ever, this year finally decided to sell my old 12 pro for 8a, never regret
The gap between Pixel XL and Pixel 2 XL is huge, but the first one isn't as bad as I expected. The 8 Pro is much better than 7 Pro and 6 Pro, and it surprised me because we miss big upgrades, and it seems it's noticeable.
Yeah, I agree. I've jumped from the 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 6 Pro to the 8 Pro now. I've found video quality to be really good compared to even the 6 Pro, which was pretty good itself at the time. Even my friends who have iPhone 14 Pro's would rather use mine after seeing it. Add in Video Boost and wow.
First off, Ryan, thank you so much for this comparison! I love going back in time to see how our phones evolved over the years and was looking for a video like yours for a while now! Second, this video totally justified my choice of going with the Pixel line because it truly proves that it is the King of the smartphone cameras.
I love the pixel 4a, I use it as a secondary phone when I want to go out, take some pictures, use wired headphones, and not be distracted by the rest of the world pinging me. the newer pixels take A LOT less time to process photos tho.
Great material nice trip down the memory lane for some of the Pixels I've owned. Let's not forget that the last nexus had the same sensor as the original Pixel with similar processing. That was actually the often overlooked breakthrough in mobile photography. Thanks Mark Levoy.
I’ve had every Pixel since the 2. I still keep the 2 and 3 around as handy cameras. The main difference over the generations that I’ve tested is increasing sharpness and improving dynamic range. But they’re all superior to anything competing at the time. After Pixel 4 you can see the loss of Marc Levoy’s influence - less of the artistic contrast manipulation and more generic balancing. All are still quite usable point and shoot cameras
Also owned all Pixels but 1 and 5. You are right on with the Marc comment. Anyone that appreciates the Pixel camera should dig around for the video of the Pixel 2 announcement event with Marc on stage. He was brilliant.
Pixel 4 was the best phone I had owned better than newer pixels it's HDR Style and the way it handles photos is my fav especially portrait mode. It has the best portrait on any pixel till date
This is why I love the Pixel camera phones.... Point and shoot and instantly share them with anyone. When I had an iPhone I only took pics when I had to. And now with a Pixel 8 Pro I take pics of everything and anything. The Pixel brought out my inner photographer in me.
Que vídeo maravilhoso! Congratulations to everyone involved, especially the presenter. What caught my attention the most was seeing the quality of the images from the older Pixels (XL, 2 and 3), how they were so far ahead of their competitors at the time and how they still produce great images today. I had the Pixel 2, 3, 5 and 7 and I remember being impressed by the night photography of the 3 (when night vision was introduced) and its selfie with autofocus, which was later removed and only returned in the 8. I also remember the noticeable drop in quality of the selfies on the Pixel 5, when compared to the 3, the lack of frequent focus. However, I remember how good the battery was on the Pixel 5 and how good its finish was, to the point that sometimes I didn't even use a case to protect it. Even with its ups and downs, I really like the Pixel line and I intend to return to them in the 10th generation.
Me as a Nexus 6P User, I had the best Picture and Video experience ever. Then I used Pixel 2 which was a massive improvement. But Pixel 8 is on another level. Great video tho.
My fav is the 7 pro. See, it has to be since this one is my first Pixel - just picked-up for under $500! Seems Pixel is perfect for someone like me who doesn't use their phone for heavy lifting, cares for photography and loves the feel of a clean OS.

Stylistically, I still think the Pixel 1 is the best. It has the more contrasty look that was also present in its predecessors, the Nexus 5X and 6P, right in line with the work of,Google's Computer Graphics Engineer Marc Levoy, who pioneered the work in their HDR technology from 2011 to 2020, culminating in the HDR algorithms used on Nexus 5, 5X, 6P, Pixel and onwards. Amongst his inspirations when working on the project Levoy cited the rennaisance period paintings which featured deep shadows and saturated highlights, while still preserving details, which meant dark shadow regions that while being very dark would still not clip to black. Later Pixels, from the 2 onwards, seemed to start favoring the overall market trend of "bright and saturated = better", foregoing much of the style pioneered by their early projects.
I had Pixel 2XL Panda, used it for 5 years and 2 months and it was the most magical gadget feeling I could ever have with a mobile, fun fact- even on 2 percent battery I could speak on call for more than 30 minutes, and I have done it like countless times, that phone was really really technical marvel, for almost 10 years every phone company are marketing on their phone's camera and selling that but Google really made a leap of advancement, I have done many small shoots on my phone and people were shocked by the results of its phots & videography, it was mind-blowing. Another fun fact- after dropping my 2XL on floors like 100s of time, then only the glass at its back shattered a little from the edge, otherwise it was really a piece of stone that was stubborn as hell. I really miss my 2XL, and now I am owning a Pixel 6a, its obviously not as great as my older phone but it is yet another fine piece of machinery. Love the Pixels. #TeamPixel
all the a-series phones are fragile, with really outdated Gorilla glas, am I right? So one needs to add all kinds of protection which as one knows, takes away a lot of the fun.
Hey man, just want to say thanks for doing this comparison. I've loved my pixel 3 and its camera for years but it broke last week. Interesting comparison mate. Photography is a cool hobby , on past occasions I have pulled out all of my old phones that still work and tested the camera’s out , and have in some instances been surprised at how good some of the oldies where at a certain photography task. One of my favourite tests was picking a couple of different coins and placing them on a table and seeing which camera can pull up the most detail , in one particular test my old galaxy note 9 was able to give my 4 years newer phone a real run for its money picking up the most amazing amount of detail when you pixel peeped . The thing about cameras as you mentioned, it’s not just about the size of the sensor , the software makes a big difference too. Up until a couple of years ago occasionally I would pull out my galaxy note 2 and wander out in the driveway and take a few random picks just to see what a 9 or 10 year old smartphone could do , and there’s no doubt the old old smart cameras in anything but ideal conditions where not great , but in decent light you could still get a happy snap worth keeping, finally the battery completely gave up the ghost on my old note 2 ( R I P note 2😊) I still have my old nexus 6p which only works if I keep it plugged into a charger , another dead battery , but as I remember it the 6p actually had not a bad camera . My old 6p other than the battery is still in pristine condition, I’m tempted to see if I can source another battery for it for shits and giggles. I haven’t done much photography with my pixel 8 pro unfortunately, life has a way of keeping busy. My young brother has a pixel 7 , he went bush a while ago and took a photo with some nice scenery behind his new car , and I have to say , it was a photo worth framing … it was that good . Amazing the pics you can get out of a smartphone ay. Good video mate . Cheers.
Be careful mate with that 6p battery replacement. My mate did this and his cpu fried because of too much voltage on new battery. It was some popular issue back in the day.
My wife used Pixel 2 then, and I was blown away the way it used to process photos. She moved to Oneplus 8T but still misses her Pixel for Potrait and landscape shots.
Pixel 2 XL was my first Pixel and I've never enjoyed another phone like my Pixels. Im excited for the Pixel 9! It's going to fix all my gripes with the 7&8 series.
As owner of a Pixel 2Xl (backup) and Pixel 4XL in daily, I can confirm the results in your video. For me, Pixel 4Xl is, and still a great phone. Few weeks ago, I did a total refurbish: -New battery (3 in total, 2 in spare) -New USB-C port -New display/chassis assy I just have to transfert all part from the old chassis assy to the new one. I love it for many reasons: -For it's look (Black and White) and it's shape -The camera: still perform really well -Face ID: in the dark, with sunlight, it's working fricking fast and no issue at all. I have this phone since the begining. If it can last 4 years more (and more), I will be happy.
Agree, the 4XL is my favourite mostly due to face ID and size/colour. I also liked camera calibration, more lifelike than newer GN1 installments. The screen, better wide/telephoto, battery life and so on are undoubtedly better on 8 pro though.
I don't know if this was the perfect time for this video or the worst one with just a week left for pixel 9 launch. But amazing work and thanks for explaining it pleasantly to us photography noobs
My biggest issues with the pixel camera and why i switched to iphone: -magenta hue in the shadows -in a sunset scenario, the whites in the sun are crushed and becomes brown instead of a rich yellow-orange -the sun or any lamp has a purple flare beside it -images are always on the cooler side so food photos look disgusting and too processed -too much forced HDR in scenarios where you want more contrast
Thank you for this comparison. I was not that impressed by my pixel 8 pro compared to my pixel 2 XL. But this kind of reminds me what a great phone this is.
Pixel 2XL cameras were ahead of its times. I personally loved my Pixel 5 cameras, which had the right exposure for my taste. Rocking a Pixel 8 pro now, which is also good, but the exposure is a tad lower than my Pixel 5.
I still can't get past the fact that Google takes the "clarity slider" effect too far in its image processing. It seems to be getting worse and worse with every generation. It's especially noticeable on people and makes facial features look garish. The original pixel does the best job, in my view, of keeping skin and facial features looking natural in the portrait shots in the forest. The Pixel 6-8 just look straight up bad. It's not natural or true to life at all. I own the pixel 6 and so often when I go to take a shot of my daughter I'm happy with what I see the in viewfinder, but when I click the shutter button and Google's ISP does its thing the final image looks really disappointing. I would love for Google to introduce some shooting profiles that dial back the heavy handed processing and leave me to do my own adjustments if I deem it necessary. In low light it's no contest - the newer Pixel devices are superior. But in good light I feel the older phones with their less aggressive processing just do a much better job with people and portraits. I'm not talking about cut outs, just the way skin, dynamic range and texture is rendered.
I agree. At some point I felt frustrated by the lack of naturalness in these over-processed photos, so I try to take my very compact Ricoh GR3 camera with me as often as possible. I still have a Pixel 4a which is a great workhorse for most phone tasks, but if I want a really pleasing picture with that evasive "magic", I know what I have to do.
Google destroyed the Pixel 6 and 7 Camera in recent updates. If you try to capture in normal light or less than ideal, the post-processing will darken the image to extreme. Your eyes will become black, you're going to see shadows where there weren't before and there will be many details lost for no reason. It's like a burnt and darken filter is applied. This has an even bigger effect on the selfie camera. I'm surprised that no one is talking about this issue since it rendered the camera useless with no way to revert it even with installing older versions of the camera app.
@@dtincworldnews8922 I found this when I got a Pixel 7 for my friend and started testing mine and others. There are also many complaining about this issue on support.google and reddit. Just because YOUR device is not affected, doesn't mean it's not an issue.
The dynamic range increase from Pixel (2016) to 4 might be due to Google's HDR+ with Bracketing (Introduced in Pixel 5, backported to Pixel 4) that captures an overexposed image and stitching it in the final photo without artificially boosting exposure in intentional bracketed, underexposed images. Color accuracy might have also improved with minimal magenta casting due to lower noise associated with amplifying underexposed, averaged frames.
6a still the OG it shocked me when it won the MKBHD blind smartphone camera test while technically being the midrange phone in the pack even from the same company.
It's called 'refinement'. The 6a launched with the same sensor from the 5 series which Google had been using since the pixel 2 or 3. They'd well optimized their processing for that sensor
The shows that the first generations of pixel were year ahead of their competition at release....we still have 2024 android phones that take significantly worse photos that those first 3 pixels.
I wasn't super happy with my 6a. I'm pretty happy with my 8 pro. My friend sends me pics on his 7 pro, and I doubt I could tell them apart from mine. I even think I might prefer the 7 pro. On here I did like the 8 pro > 7 pro. More detailed. Interesting video, thanks!
Still using P5 even tho the peformance isnt that good its a very good daily driver with amazing camera and the size is just perfect literally when I meet someone they always ask what phone I am using because it is so small and cute
You can clearly see that Google are getting better with the bigger sensors with the 8 Pro. It might not seem lkek much but in areas where light isn't optimal, the 8 Pro seems to do much better rhan the 7 Pro. For example, while the video focused on highlight roll off for the sky through the rocky structure at 6:43, if you look at rhe grass at the bottom, its quite a bit more detailed on the 8P whereas it's quite slotchy on the 7P. Google claim that they've rebuilt their HDR pipeline from the "ground up" so I'll be interested to see if that affects things.
Pixel 2 at the time was leaps and bounds better than competition. Every year, the buzz around the new Pixel's camera prowess spreads across the internet like wildfire. Not anymore.
Pixel 8 Pro can't shoot the moon anymore. Its just a blurry/pixelated mess. I've gotten better results using the pro settings, but not nearly as good as how they used to be on auto night sight. I don't know enough about photography to get the best out of pro modes and it's one of the reasons why I chose Pixel over Samsung. The just shoot and trust the result reviewers talk about is not a reality for me.
I just bought a pixel 7a last month. And I am struggling to take good photos 😒 I don't understand why the hell photos look cool in the viewfinder but loses all the colour (washed out) once the photo is saved post processing. This is really disgusting from a brand like Google!

-New battery (3 in total, 2 in spare)
-New USB-C port
-New display/chassis assy
I just have to transfert all part from the old chassis assy to the new one.
I love it for many reasons:
-For it's look (Black and White) and it's shape
-The camera: still perform really well
-Face ID: in the dark, with sunlight, it's working fricking fast and no issue at all.
I have this phone since the begining. If it can last 4 years more (and more), I will be happy.
rip battery life
@@filterkid Why ?
Agree, the 4XL is my favourite mostly due to face ID and size/colour. I also liked camera calibration, more lifelike than newer GN1 installments. The screen, better wide/telephoto, battery life and so on are undoubtedly better on 8 pro though.
@@le_combattant2458 you will get 4 to 4.5 hr screen on time, which is very low in 2024! that's the main con
I got no complaints for my pixel 4
(Not even for the battery, I live with it)
The pixels takes the best pics I swear
The 2XL is my favourite phone ever 🥰 and now we are just a few days away from the launching of the 9th pixel 😮 lets goo
My Goat fav is the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL 🐐
Dope thumbnail 👌🏾👌🏾
Thanks for this high effort video
10:37 Brilliant choice of objects for a camera test 🫡
I don't know if this was the perfect time for this video or the worst one with just a week left for pixel 9 launch.
But amazing work and thanks for explaining it pleasantly to us photography noobs
Loved this 👌🏽
Honestly, it feels like the pixel phones have peaked in a way. I remember a time when even non-tech people knew pixels had superior cameras.
They focus more on security now
My biggest issues with the pixel camera and why i switched to iphone:
-magenta hue in the shadows
-in a sunset scenario, the whites in the sun are crushed and becomes brown instead of a rich yellow-orange
-the sun or any lamp has a purple flare beside it
-images are always on the cooler side so food photos look disgusting and too processed
-too much forced HDR in scenarios where you want more contrast
Thank you for this comparison. I was not that impressed by my pixel 8 pro compared to my pixel 2 XL. But this kind of reminds me what a great phone this is.
That thumbnail is fire
Pixel 2XL cameras were ahead of its times. I personally loved my Pixel 5 cameras, which had the right exposure for my taste. Rocking a Pixel 8 pro now, which is also good, but the exposure is a tad lower than my Pixel 5.
I believe pixel XL can still beat the majority of today's android phones in terms of standard photos.
Love the thumbnail
Had pixel 1, 2, 3a, 5 and now 6pro. Love them all.
Which is best of all for the camera?
Google destroyed the Pixel 6 and 7 Camera in recent updates. If you try to capture in normal light or less than ideal, the post-processing will darken the image to extreme. Your eyes will become black, you're going to see shadows where there weren't before and there will be many details lost for no reason. It's like a burnt and darken filter is applied. This has an even bigger effect on the selfie camera.
I'm surprised that no one is talking about this issue since it rendered the camera useless with no way to revert it even with installing older versions of the camera app.
Because this isn't true
Because it's just YOUR device. My 7 Pro is A1.
@@dtincworldnews8922 I found this when I got a Pixel 7 for my friend and started testing mine and others. There are also many complaining about this issue on support.google and reddit. Just because YOUR device is not affected, doesn't mean it's not an issue.
@@mohammadjaber9309 Search it!
I have this problem and it's an old issue. There is a reddit thread from 2y ago.
I miss Snapdragon Pixel.
Great video! You should of included the nexus
It has taken some time for me to fall in love with my 8 pro but im a fan now.
Wait those leaves look familiar... 😂
I loved the pixel 2 shot more than the 6 in round 7
4XL looks really good in the 7th round, highlighs look almost as good as in the 8 pro
I still have the OG pixel. The image processing was gold but now google seems intentionally downgrade it after years thru software update
Good video. Thank you👍
Pixel 1 had actually a bigger sensor of 1.55 micron, than pixels 2,3,4, and 5 which had only 1.4 micron.
That's exactly what they shown in the video.
I was looking through old photos and some stunning shots…. Checked which phone at the time and they were from pixel 3
That's awesome! do one for the videography as well!
The shows that the first generations of pixel were year ahead of their competition at release....we still have 2024 android phones that take significantly worse photos that those first 3 pixels.
Zenyatta transcendence in overwatch be like
I wasn't super happy with my 6a. I'm pretty happy with my 8 pro. My friend sends me pics on his 7 pro, and I doubt I could tell them apart from mine. I even think I might prefer the 7 pro. On here I did like the 8 pro > 7 pro. More detailed. Interesting video, thanks!
Fantastic work I hope you do all this for iphone and sumsung series also.....
Please do all the A series next, PLEASE
Google is still an all time camera champ
I have 2 XL and now 7 Pro
😢 the 2 XL was the best pixel for me.
That thumbnail goes hard
Pixel 4xl performed really well.
I love my 4XL ❤
Great video but sadly you didn't test the selfie camera. The Pixel 3 has 2 sensors with auto focus. Impressive for that time
Love your videos. What is your favorite phone models? Pixel is my favorite phones.
at 3:33 I thought for a second it was a marijuana leaf lol
lol
Same 😂
Still rocking my pixel 3
Google claim that they've rebuilt their HDR pipeline from the "ground up" so I'll be interested to see if that affects things.
thank you buddy ..real MPV so the 6 and 8 is the best
Pixel 2 at the time was leaps and bounds better than competition. Every year, the buzz around the new Pixel's camera prowess spreads across the internet like wildfire. Not anymore.
i was just watch him now on pocketnow
3rd gen 3xl..... I'm still rocking it 3xl ....
I've actually got pretty good moon shots from my 8 pro
Good job, in video quality what do you think ?
My favorite set is pixel fold and watch and buds❤❤
I had (and share to family)
5 Pixel 1
2 Pixel 2
1 Pixel 3
3 Pixel 3A
1 Pixel 6
1 Pixel 6A
All camera are very confident to snap
the insteresting things is,
pixel that only with 1 back camera lense take potrait better than when thay add another lense
Why didn't you wait for the Google pixel 10 series
Why don't you wait 2 years on your own
Where did you get that cannabis😂😂😂 nice photo by the way,, LOL
I just bought a pixel 7a last month. And I am struggling to take good photos 😒
I don't understand why the hell photos look cool in the viewfinder but loses all the colour (washed out) once the photo is saved post processing. This is really disgusting from a brand like Google!
pixel 5 owner here. pixel 2 is soo good, why we cant disable this damn sharpening im literally only taking shots raw.
Amazing idea and application! Please do Galaxy S
