Living in Arizona is quite a unique experience because of the vastness that the state offers. From the Sonoran Desert in the south to the high country in the north all the way up towards the Four Corners east and the Grand Canyon in the west. Known as the Grand Canyon state, Arizona is diverse in many ways. The state tree is the Palo Verde, the state cactus is the Saguaro, the state bird is the Cactus wren. The Latino/Hispanic population is one of the two original groups here, and Arizona WAS Mexico until the Gadsdon Purchase that you heard about. That's why everything has Spanish names as California does. As a white person, I often feel that we are only guests here. ❤ from AZ.

Due to listening to almost every single video that Jeff has ever made- (he helped me immensely in my decision to move to AZ), I have had no surprises. Certainly no bad ones anyway. I started watching his videos in 2019, which lead me to do a 4 day driving tour of the state of AZ with 1 of my sisters. I bought a house there about 14 months later. If you are wondering about anything, go back to his oldest videos & just start watching them all. Since Jeff is mostly positive about AZ, you can also listen to "Living in Arizona" (Sam), who is more negative about AZ, to hear the other side a little bit. None of Sam's "negatives" were super negative to me, so weighing the pros & cons, I made the move & I love Arizona. Arizona is the 5th state that I have lived in so far in my life. Life is an adventure. If you are considering a move, learn as much as you can about what is important to you, visit a few times, & make your decision. Good luck!

AZ has tremendous law enforcement. They are more discreet and try to blend in hidden places to catch speeders and driving under the influence drivers. Big urban cities are used to seeing lots of “marked cars” as a deterrent. In AZ they try really hard to blend in. Believe it when anything goes down law enforcement will show up in pickup trucks - mustangs- work trucks fitted etc in minutes. From everywhere. You’ll be like where did they all come from .

They've got nicknames like Jumping Cholla, Teddybear Cholla, etc. They don't really jump but the little fluffy balls will stick to your skin, through your pants or tennis shoes and the reverse barbs hurt a lot pulling them out. All you have to do is barely touch them and they ATTACK you. Staw away from them, lol.

What you need to know is that Arizona is in the midst of a 20 year drought and water shortage. Our water is transported over 300 miles from the Colorado River and is shared by 7 other states and Mexico (some are also experiencing droughts.) They divvied our water rights in a wet year, so there isn't enough for everyone now. To make it worse, we have state legislators and a governor who are weakening our water protections. Rep. Gail Griffen (District 14) is a realtor who chairs the Natural Resources, Energy and Water committee. She initiated several bad bills that weakened water protections so she can profit from development that would destroy the San Pedro River. So, if you are coming to Arizona, please, help us conserve water. Don't put in grass or a pool. Put in a cistern (water barrel) to use rainwater on drought tolerant native trees and plants.

Actually it's easy to avoid the worst of the triple digit temps by moving to a higher elevation, where it's often 10-15 degrees cooler than the surrounding desert lowlands. Of course the winters can also be a tad bit chillier, but have found that around 3,000 to 4,000 ft. elevation tends to be a good 'sweet spot'..

Great talk here. I moved to AZ 10 yrs ago from Ohio. And I stay completely out of the politics. I live in Surprise and love it. We brought a beautiful home.Just remember, July thru Sept can sometime be very uncomfortable weather wise. Once you have been here for a couple of years, you don't count June. It gets extremely hot. But I'll take those 3 months over 6 to 7 months cold weather any day. Learn AZ laws and give yourselves a couple of yrs to adjust. Not sure I would move here if my kids were not already grown. I've heard from my neighbors the school system is not quite up to par. Other than that, People are about the same as they are everywhere. Give respect..you get it.

Michael, a few months ago there were 30 consecutive days of triple digits in the Valley (if you remember). 10 years ago my wife and I lived in Scottsdale for 10 years. Moved back to CA 10 years ago be closer to aging parents. We would consider a move back to AZ but the choices would be in the Prescott/Prescott Valley area or Oracle AZ to be out of the heat dome. One parent has passed and we just moved my 95 year old father-in-law into a Independent Living Community. Time will tell what we will do. Say what you want about CA, the weather just can't be beaten though. We live in a Sacramento suburb. 1 /12 hours to Tahoe, less than 2 hours to SF (where we lived many years go). No kids.

Had my fill of Cali. I lived in the Livermore/Pleasanton area for 6 years. Lots to do though. The heat here in AZ no longer bothers me. I mean a 3 bedroom/2 bath 1700 sq ft home for 1100 a month including insurance is hard to beat. Can't even get a room in CA for that. AC bill gets a little high for 3 months. That fine also out here. You gotta do what's best for you and your family. My sister sold her place in San Jose for like 1.8 mil and moved out here. She's adjusting nicely. Good luck to you.

I live in the Tortolita/Oro Valley area. Cops everywhere! 3 just on my street. Can't drive a full mile without seeing a cop or getting pulled over by one for something stupid. The cops here are mean too! They even have the right to jam a needle in your arm and take blood while you're sitting on the side of a dusty road. They lock people in hot cop cars for hours at a time with no water, no air blowing, and the windows up. Don't believe me ? Google how many police dogs die every year because their cop owners accidentally leave them in a hot car for too long , Sometimes OVER NIGHT or OR FOR MULTIPLE DAYS! If that's still not enough, the laws are corrupt and the cop who arrests the most people by the end of the year gets a cash bonus! If you're pulled over for driving while intoxicated but you blow a 0.00 and your side of the road blood test comes back clean your STILL getting a DUI & GOING TO JAIL!!! that's because MADD also gives out a cash prize to the cop in each state who hands out the most DUIs. Doesn't matter that you blew a zero & your blood was clean. In Arizona the police decide who's intoxicated no matter what the proof says. It's 100% percent up to the police.

Of every state I've ever lived in Arizona is hands down the best state I've ever lived in. And as for the heat and taxes...taxes are high everywhere for one...and second there are hotter locations in California. Especially Palm Springs and the Mojave Desert/Death Valley areas where temps on a daily basis in the summer are well over 120° each day. So if you can't take the heat don't come. And water is scarce and is a precious commodity in the desert...so one must absolutely know how to conserve water and make it stretch. If you can't or won't do any of this don't come here. And if you do come here leave ignorant politics behind you. People in Arizona are decent for the most part and kinder than most states. Inflation in my county is the highest in the nation right now. 7% , gas is currently high $4, utilities are horribly high ($500-800 in summer is not unusual if you don't have solar), just to compare.

There's more reasons for not needing basements and having one story homes -- You don't need deep foundations because there is no need to get below the frost line, so no need to dig deep (and the cost is avoided too). Also land is still cheap here and it's cheaper to build a single story home, less structure, no stairs. The newest homes are tending to be two story because land is getting more expensive and people want big houses)... Finally in the midwest basements evolved from insulated root cellars used to store things to be the place where you keep the coal pile and the furnace. My house uses a heat pump, which is mounted on the roof; none of the interior space is taken up with a furnace; in most houses that do have them they take up one small closet.

    Oh, so many comments:
In warm climates, heat rises as you know. And if you did your homework, you know just how hot it can get! So this is why we only built low to the ground, not these multi-level projects that seem to be allowed to be built here now.
Snowbirds have been coming here for-ever! They may drive slowly (they're getting better😂), but they have never been a problem, and they do spend money while they are here.
Next. Do not let 'fluffy' run in the backyard alone if you're living out in the desert... Desert Hawks have been known to grab small pets.
Yes. We have heavy urban sprawl and increasing costs as everyone moves here. The building will cause an increase in temperature.
With love from the Sonoran Desert.

Arizona is beautiful we moved from Iowa and stayed for 17 years. Before I moved away it became hotter than previous years like 117 at night.
The Arizona government broke up my entire young family and my young family was forced to move from our newly constructed rental home during a time when we could have easily bought the home back in 2008 before the recession. Shortly after our forced removal the same government broke up my family. 16 years later it is still a nightmare. That same home we lived in and were the 1st tenants of and made all rental payments on time the bank forced us to move. The same home is now worth 4 times the amount it was when they made my young family move. I just gave birth to a baby and my other children were in elementary school and I am a Tax Accountant so it was during the main individual tax season and I was working remote. The government made us move between 2-2008 to 4-2008 and I just had my newborn 2-2008 and had stay at home children, elementary school child, middle school child and high school children. I also always had decent net worth and continuously elevating my educational credentials and skills for the betterment of my children. Arizona is good and bad.

We deal with them the best we can. Their driving is the worst tho. We are looking to relocate in AZ in the next year or two for retirement. So, used to the "critters" in Colorado 4 legged and 2. We have a bad influx of homeless on drugs being bussed into our small town. More people doing open carry now. So thats not a big deal. Husband is a hunter and has plenty of things to "pack". I carry a taser. ha! We also have had our own custom home building business and do know the building industry. Colorado is unwarranted in its extreme hike in prices. I mean $750+ a square foot for some of the "builders" is just rapping people. But hey, if they are dumb enough to pay that guess its their decision. Thanks for providing these informational videos. Another thing I'd add people may want to know...they better be able to finance over a million if they want to live in the houses and neighborhoods you're showing, especially in the first 2 minutes of this video. I'm mostly seeing shanties and double wides in disheveled neighborhoods around Phoenix and Tucson up to the 350k range, the only exception being the 55+ neighborhoods.
And another question regarding all the disheveled neighborhoods...they look like 3rd world countries from above. Why do so many people have so many cars and junk in their tiny yards??? My post probably seems negative, but I'm genuinely curious as I've been looking at listings hoping to move to AZ.

Moved here from longtime in Northern VA near DC, other half of my life in Minneapolis, MN.
    Things I’d wish I’d known:
    1- water crisis getting worse
2- extreme heat- I love heat, being from Minnesota originally, but really?????? This will be unlivable in my daughter’s future…… yikes!
3- no culture- and I know culture from both Minneapolis and Washington DC area!!!!!!!
4- rude drivers in big honking pickups!!!!!!!Also uninsured drivers(!)
5- Differences between climate in Tucson vs Phoenix-3K elevation in Tucson helps
    6) dogs and rattlers, plus coyotes- I live right near Lookout Mountain in North Phoenix-a real coyote hangout, very huge mountain!
    7) healthcare- other than 3 hospitals plus the Mayo, (and Barrows for neurological needs), which I was NOT impressed by (I’m an RN) it’s a huge area with too little quality………..and the VA here is the dirtiest hospital I’ve ever been in: I’ve worked at 13 over the years half older than the VA(!) ………..
    8) did I say there’s no culture?????????

    • @malvolio01
      @malvolio01 2 года назад +2

Absolutely no culture. When I was 14, my parents uprooted us and we moved from the Charlotte area to PHX. It was a huge and horrible culture shock. Charlotte isn't DC but there was still much more culture there than in PHX in the early to mid 90s and I'd have to imagine there still is.
Also, on top of it, the landscape is so barren, unappealing and uninviting. In our area outside of Charlotte, we had wooded area, grassy fields and a nice creek running behind the house. In Phx, we had a tiny fenced yard that was even tinier because of the space the pool took up (granted, the pool was nice... and necessary 4 months of the year. But it still didn't make up fo the verdant landscape we had in NC.)
On top of that, when you leave PHX, there's no place to go. Sure, you have Sedona and Flagstaff, which are great. But those become exhausted quickly. The closest city is... what? Tucson? Give me a break.
And finally, as you touched on, the lack of water. It becomes immediately obvious that you're smack dab in the middle of a barren wasteland and that this place could absolutely not have existed - let alone thrived - 100 plus yrs ago.
Oh, and the people are just downright odd. And, on top of being odd, they're incredibly shallow and everything is surface level. It's almost as if they're aspiring to be like L.A..
I could not wait to get out of there and go off to college as far away as possible when I turned 18. I left in '97, haven't returned and have no desire to. Awful place.
