Diesel valve train adjustments seem like voodoo to many people, but it isn't too complicated. This video will go over the fundamentals of performing a Cat overhead adjustment for the intake and exhaust valves. Did this video help you save time or money? If so, consider sending support on Paypal, for the username AdeptApe@yahoo.com and thank you very much for watching.
Hey Adapt Ape, me an a few other guys are getting ready to deploy and were doing some adjustments on an LSAT. TM has been zero help for the last two hours but you video set us straight in 10 min, thanks!
You all have a safe and successful deployment!
I appreciated all your explanation towards the electronic injectors remover and replacement.
I know my other videos discuss C7 injectors in more detail, but I'll be uploading more videos about overhead adjustments and injector adjustments for C15, 3406, and C13 in the future. Thanks for the comment.
okay great man
thanks for all the feed back.
will be waiting on the video
Caterpillar 3508 B of cranck case inpection
Another gold mine of a video!! Certainly going to help me in the Engines class ( diesel student). Intake exhaust intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust 🤔

Design Logic Bikes I would like to have your number
my man you are the best thanks for your help on that cat 15
You're welcome sir. If you have questions in the future, you can ask me here and I'll try to answer them within a few minutes. Please subscribe if you can.
As always you are doing a great job of educating us. How about something on 3126B waste gates and turbos ?
Thanks and keep up the good work. John in Odessa, Tx
+John Richardson I'm going to be making a video on turbochargers and CACs in the future. Thanks for the comment.
how long should it take to adjust the fuel rack and increase the horsepower settings from 385hp to 420hp on a 3126 mechanical marine engine aswell as the running of the valves? thx,lou
@adeptape help! Changing head gasket on my 3306 in my d6 dozer. Do I have to worry about timing pin if I’m just changing gasket? I’m pretty sure I’m not messing with injection pump so it should stay in time? Thank you it’s in a million peices now kinda scary ha
great job
Im replacing the cam roller side cover gaskets. Is there a technique to aligning the pushrods in the cam follower seats? Or just use a borescope? Thanks
Doing this on a 3126. 4 intake and 6 exhaust are tight on both tdc positions? Any reason why that might be?
C13 Valve adjustment according to our shop book is .015 Intake and .025 Exhaust.
+Garage Days A KCB serial number will be 15/25 a LEE serial number should be 15/30.
Could you please tell me where you got that turning tool. I had one for years and it was stolen and I cannot find another one or remember where I got the first one from. Thank You for all your very informative and easily understood videos.
Awesome job! Thanks for the rhyme to fallow. :)
+Paul N You are welcome. The rhyme works for all Cat Truck 6 cylinder engines.
Right on! I'll be sure to pass it on. Very helpful!
I have a 3406E 2WS motor, on one cold morning bobtailing going downhill, my jake break switch was on and engaged. I heard a loud pop noice and after that my number 3 switch and one stopped working. It pulls great but recently I hear hissing sound from the # 6 cylinder. My question is, if you engage the jake when it is cold, can it cause any damage to the valve or head. Thanks.
I have been trying to adjust the valves on my 3126 Cat for the last 2 days, there is always one that get tight with not space in the area where you run the feeler gage tool, in this engine the pin hole is on the driver side of the engine, any suggest. I might be pinning the engine wrong...
thanks i got to follow always learnd from this chamel.
Oh man ! Mint video
sir thanks so much for help & free information & idvice ur great man to help new mechnic..regards HAJI
Is this the same procedure for the 3126 engine ?
Thanks this was very helpful
Thanks for all the info on everything about the different cat engines. Where can I buy the piston liner rod puller? I've been looking around but I haven't been able find it. Thanks. Bruce
I'm working on a C9 in a 330D. I removed the pipe plug you mention and find several holes a bolt will drop into. How do I know I have the correct pin hole?
Hello Adapt Ape what is the purpose of the clearance between the rocker arm and valve
Good Day Adept Ape
Could you do a video on D399 Caterpillar Engines?
I have 3406a is the overhead adjustment procedure the same as for a 3406 e
I have a 2014 Cat 924K wheel loader and need to do a valve adjustment, has 11000 hour's and I don't think they ever been adjusted ,original paint on all bolts, it is a C6.6 ACERT is the adjustment on this engine .015 and .025 ? and is intake/exhaust series the same
great video bud!
+Eric Crosco Thank you.
I have a 2003 kenworth 900 Cat C15 engine. When the truck is running the fan clutch works without stopping on low it works fine. Do you know if it is a thermostat or something else ?
Thank you Brother
On a 3208 cat natural how to take that rack off I need to change my injectors the tube goes behind the rack what do you torque it back to plz in thank you
So what is the sequence for adjusting them in order
Hello have to say I you are whith our a doubt the most informative cat mechanic . I have been driving a local septic truck whith a C13 it has 239456 mi on this engine and 10,000 hrs have started to notice a pinging or rattling comming from the engine only when it’s under a load it almost sounds like spark knock on a gas engine what is causing this
Enjoy your videos, on a 3126E cat should the valve adjustment be done HOT, OR COLD
On valve lash adjust does it matter if engine is warm or cold. Did not hear comment on cold or oper. temp lash feeler gauge thickness?
Your video's are just awesome, keep up the great work 😉😸.
+Chris Morgan I should have mentioned that, but always do a valve adjust when the engine is cold.
Hi I was just curious if the tool to turn the crank is a CAT tool? Thanks.
would this be similar with a maxxforce dt or 10?
May i apply this procedure way on cummins 6bt is this will ok or not
Doing this soon on my isuzu npr with 4hk1 engine
do you happen to know someone who works on isuzu engines? I just purchased the service manual for my truck and Im confused on adjusting the valves on my isuzu NPR-HD. It has 2 valves, each for intake/exhaust that have a bridge. Whats confusing is that the bridges on this engine have their own adjusting screw as well as the rocker arm. The adjusting screw on the bridge pivots on 1 valve and can affect how horizontal the bridge is. They warn not to let the bridge be too slanted and yet they want you to loosen both the rocker arm bolt and bridge adjusting bolt which I would think will make the bridge cocked. Then they want you to adjust the lash on the rocker arm first then adjust the bridge screw so that it just touches the valve. Not much info on these engines out there and was wondering if you might know somebody that can help clarify. I was thinking just dont touch the bridge screws but never done it before. Gonna see if my local diesel guy will be nice enough to help me as well lol.
How many time to turn the Engine before setting the valve?
Hey adept, can you make a video on how to adjust the clutch? I have a 2002 kenworth T300 with a cat 3126 again thank you for your videos I like it, enjoy and I learn a lot from them so keep up the good work partner.
I can put it in the future possible video options. Would be a bit hard to film the clutch gap, but I'll try to get one out one day.
Got anything on 3116 injector adjustment ? Thanks
nice
I have been trying to adjust valve lash on 3116 cat for two days. But push rod keeps on bending
When torquing the nut, there is no reason to hold with the allen wrench to avoid disturbing the clearance?
Nice bro
Hi Adept Ape. Man I’ve learned a lot from your vids! I’m working on my 1st Caterpillar engine swap. 3406B (4MG). I’m getting ready to install and adjust the jake brake but I can’t find the proper procedures. It has the jacobs model C-346 B. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
good greeting .
There is a diesel fuel leak in the oil tank of a Detroit 8-cylinder engine, please tell me why and how to fix it.
Is it the same procedure for a cat 4.4 acert?
Great video! Thanks...Wow I always thought this would be so much more complicated. Ive heard some occurrences of dropping a valve after a valve adjustment on the RV forums. Can you advise what are the common causes are on a C7?
+9secv6 Do you mean the common causes of a dropped valve on a C7 or common failures on a C7?
What are the most common causes of a dropped valve in a C7? Especially after a valve adjustment...Thanks
+9secv6 Normally valve failure on a C7 is caused by the lifters. The lifters have a tendency to fail on the roller bearing, which then damages the pushrod and can damage the rocker arm or valves. It isn't super common, but it is a failure point.
Thank you for the reply.Great info.
How long should I wait to have an overhead done on a new head on a c13?
Once a yr
good
Hey man, do you have a video on a C-12 with weak Jake's and how to correct it? Thanks man
what do you want to know? How to adjust the jakes or how to rebuild them?
thanks man that will be great.
where about are u from.
and I got a mechanic who come and dose setting for me
but now can't get hold of him any more so I wanna learn
I'm in the Southwest US.
When removing and replacing the Valve cover it looks like CAT has bulk gasket material that you use for the valve cover gasket. I have read on some sites that you can reuse the original gasket if not damaged. What is your thoughts on the gasket and any suggestions on cutting the new material?
+Jeff Peters The gasket can be reused if it isn't flattened out. If it is then you'll want to get some new seal. Basically just cut it with a pair of heavy duty scissors or snips. You should watch my "day in the life of a truck mechanic" video, the thumbnail is me looking at a turbocharger. I actually replace that seal in the video.
nice video. when torquing the valve nuts you don't need to recheck the clearances for the valve to rocker arm? i would think that without holding the adjuster screw while tightening the nut, (as you did in the preliminary adjustment) the entire assembly would tighten shrinking the gap?
Sorry I didn't catch your comment earlier, usually I get a notification. Yes the adjuster can move on you when you torque it, but after you have done a ton of them you'll find that you tighten it with the wrench to about the correct torque. The torque wrench is really just a double check, most guys don't torque the nuts. You can leave the feeler gauge in there when you torque it as well just to make sure, or just a torque adapter or "dogbone" wrench to tighten it initially. Thanks for the comment.
+Adept Ape I want to know the problem there is diesel in the radiator machine model 3116 Loader 950f
JUST WATCHING.......1999 , 3126 RV 300 HP ,THANKS SO MUCH
How often do you need to do an overhead set? Do you normally find clearances tighter or looser on engines that have been run for a while?
250k miles, they usually get tighter due to valve seats pulling thru
Thanks!, my 1wm 1997 3126 with the hp oil tubes that go into the top of the injector and only two valves per cyl. Is that the same adjustment sequence you show here?
Valve lash on those is .015 intake and .025 exhaust. Intake valves are the forward valves (fan side) and exhaust are the rear of each cylinder.
If you whatch for the intake on 1 closing them you know or coming on top you can feel it on the compression stroke a turning tool it nice by yourself because your on the wrong side from pin
Hey, Adept Ape, aren't there specific markings to tell you when you have hit TDC? Where are they on this specific engine?
+BrunetteBudgets You are correct, these engines have timing marks, but the camshaft timing marks are behind the timing cover which takes quite awhile to remove to check the timing. None of the harmonic dampeners have timing marks like a car engine so the pinning is really the best way to time them. Hope that answers your questions. Good questions
+Adept Ape This engine is a C7s by the way.
Good morning, can I ping a 3406b from the passenger side of engine?
i have a 425and quate cat i need to ajust the valve on it can you please give me a short vedio on it
Hi my C15 accert return diesel to the tank at hight temp ?why
can u show a video on how to do 3116 engine synchronisation and fuel settings...thansk
+darling kanda I can try to record the next one that comes in, but that isn't very often.
Whats the ajustment on the 3126e
Hey
whats the difference between a 70 and 120 pin harness?
+Omar Well the number of pins of course, but really it's just a bigger connector for the newer Cat engines with more electronics. Still use Deutsch style connectors.
Do you know how to adjust valves in a cat engine C6.6
Be sure and tie string or something to the tools you are using. I dropped the allen wrench down beside a push rod and was lucky and got it out with a magnet.
+thomas gordon If using Allen wrenches that is a good idea. I prefer to use a T handle driver or 3/8 driver.
If I'm standing in front of my 3126b which way do I turn the pulley for TDC.. in this video looks ur going counterclockwise
+Cory Swann The crankshaft will turn clockwise facing it from the front.
Adept Ape thank u sir whts tht PayPal link
hey what would it mean if I lost power to ignition all of a sudden while driving
+Matthew Galindo The ignition 12 volt signal from the key switch is what tells the ECM to stay on. If the ECM lost it, it would shut off firing your injectors and your engine would shut down. Same as turning the key to the off position.
Hey sir adapt ape i'm jissie from Philippines what is firing order ang measurement of injector how to adjust 3126 loader 926g
where is your shop state n city
do u have a video of how to set up overhead setting ?
I'm going to be making one for C15 and C13 in the future, but am waiting to do one in the shop and unfortunately have been getting a lot of C7 work recently. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have one up.
Wouldn’t you want to torque them before applying the torque stripe? Else you’re just breaking your stripe right away
Cat sockets? Where from?
Sir have a good day I'm a filipino and new comers mechanic in CAT machines I want to know , what injectors will be adjusted on top cylinder no.?, then how many degrees turning again to be coming top cylinder no.6 , thank you very much your video sharing a lot for me and all viewers , joel canoy
Thanks your ideas share it to me
Sorry I mistake that is cylinder no.1
+Jem Lord Canoy You should watch my C15 and C13/C11 overhead video, it explains that better. You can do injectors 3,5,6 when you are tdc on 1 and 1,2,4 on tdc 6.
How can i like this multiple times
why c15 always got a problem with rocker always broke or eating on cam shaft
power full engine but head adjust always always
+reda elsheikh Every engine has weak points in their design, the C15 seems to have problems with the overhead more than most of the other components on it. That is just the weak point of that design. I think they had more problems as well because they changed the overhead design so many times over the years.
It's there a update bolt kit for the rocker arms, to fix the problem of them snapping the bolts?
What if someone put the flywheel on wrong, jamming the steel dowel down in the wrong spot on the crank, the pin timing would be wrong. could you look for overlap on 1, and make sure valves on 6 are both loose and vice versa?
+RYAN T Most Cat engines have different spaced crank bolts for the flywheel, so it would be darn near impossible to install it wrong, but there are many aftermarket flywheels and sometimes the flywheel housing has the pin hole incorrect. There is always someone that could put one on wrong if they try hard enough. So that leaves you with a few options. You can check the timing by removing the cam cover, but that takes quite a bit of time. The engines with high pressure common rail fuel pumps have a timing port that can be checked, but that is only C7s and C9s engines. So yes if you know your firing order which is 153624, and your pair cylinders 1& 6, 2 & 5, 3 & 4, then you can do your overhead, but it takes quite a bit longer since you'll have to rotate the engine in small increments watching the valves. Having to do the injectors complicates it further since you do them on the cylinder that has the open valves in overlap. If the engine has Jake's and IVAs then your going to have rotate it more if the housings had to be removed too, I've done it with engines that use accessory flywheel housings like cement trucks, it sucks.
+Adept Ape ok gotcha, yea that'd be a lot of engine rotation.. Thanks for the reply!
+Adept Ape ok gotcha, yea that'd be a lot of engine rotation.. Thanks for the reply!
@@AdeptApe wat 13×

does this work for all CAT engines?
+Jameson Boon For inline 6 modern Car truck engines, the sequence works, the lash adjustments could be different depending on the engine model. The 3406 for example uses a 15/30 thousandths instead is the 15/25 thousandths of the C7 in this video.
Cheers mate i don't get much time with CAT engines just macks an volvos an starting to get into the Cummins due to of where I've worked in the past an where I am now an your videos are pretty good
+Jameson Boon That's cool you get to work on a bunch of different stuff, I wish I knew more about Cummins, but then I wouldn't be the Cat guy I guess.
Would adjusting the valves on my 3116 be a similar process ?
How much is the hourly labor rate in a cat shop?
Depends on the shop, since each Dealership is a separate company, but it is 120 an hour at our shop.
+Adept Ape not bad, the Volvo dealer near where I work charges 142$ per hour, lotta variation from what I've seen so far.
+CootShoot95 That is quite a difference, the shop charges a higher rate for RVs, but 142 an hour for trucks is pretty high.
+Adept Ape Chicago dealer, that probly explains it. hopefully you get what you pay for. lol
event 1516 i just do it .
Where is your location? I like to bring my truck to you. I have a c7 engine
Hi, good day
better video for tech& students or service engineers. but from #1 cylinder to # 6 cylinder setting parameter is missing . so show in next video. as given below parameter according to CAT.
*WHEN 1st # cylinder on TDC-
INTAKE EXHAUST
#1 #1
#2 #3
#4 #5
*WHEN 6 # cylinder on TDC
INTAKE EXHAUST
#3 #2
#5 #4
#6 #6
How does this parameter change how you made this video ?
@@asanoen1777 yes
Sir. I need your help
You can send questions to Adeptape@yahoo.com
let's see what happens with that oil pres. tomorrow
Alright, it looks like you have a sensor wiring problem, but won't know until we dig into it tomorrow.
Hello, I'm working on a 2004 c7 cat was told to set intake to 0.038 and exhaust to 0.064, is this correct?
+Emilio Gomez Should be 15 and 25 thousandths, I think that is what the millimeter measurements are. If you look on the data tag on the valve cover it'll tell you too, little known fact.
Adept Ape thank u so much 💪
Love to see a valve and injector on a D11R dozer, man that’s a bitch to wind over
Dod,, can you make video how remove plunger barrel and install them back..
hi
Damper! lol
I'm not sure how just saying "intake exhaust" 3 times helps anyone to remember the sequence for which cylinders get both intake and exhaust and which only get either the intake or exhaust adjusted for that particular flywheel pin but if it works for you that's cool.
Sorry but the valaves you are touching and what your identifying it as is backwards when you saying the sequence and the sequence you say doesn't match what you are doing and saying... leaving confusion, I know this is older video but could you possibly post the procedure? Example " one T.D.C. adjust #1 Ex,#2 In,#3 Ex,#4 In," etc.. or " on T.D.C adj even #s In vl and odd #s Ex vl then rotate 360° and do opposite valves..
