If they are too dangerous to have a firearm they are too dangerous to be on the streets. Criminals don't follow laws, that's what makes them a criminal.

Just because this ex-felon possessed a gun illegally and used it doesn't make it a bad law. He broke the law.
So, now he gets extra charges - felon in illegal possession of a gun and felon using illegal gun in the commission of a crime.
So when he's convicted, he'll likely get life without parole. The added peonies mean he'll spend the rest of his life in prison. If he was legally allowed to have a gun, those extra felonies wouldn't be felonies at all.
