I watched some of your other videos on the 5R55S which are great videos that go in depth and rebuilt it thinking it was a different issue and after seeing this realized it was just the converter. guys, always start with the easiest thing to fix.
Done a couple of these 5r55s transmissions. The molded gaskets all but fall right off the separator plate if brush paint remover on both sides, lay them in a cookie sheet. Pour a little more paint stripper on them and let soak over night. No grinding necessary. Just thought I'd share my tip with you guys. And by the way, Love watching your videos. You have taught me so much. Thank you!!
Awesome video Hirum. I don't understand why someone even bothers to rebuild that trans if they don't want to do it correctly. I guess it is just laziness to just add gaskets to that seperater plate. Im glad there are people like you to do it right.
What was it you said? Very simple...maybe for you my friend. I love these vids. I had no idea what the inside of an auto, trans, looked like until I discovered your channel. They look pretty complicated to me! Thanks for all the videos.
same exact thing happened to me the other day with an 98 exploder! 5r55e the bearings in the torque just got destroyed and clogged the filter right up!! started to grind the stator down and destroy the pump! forward clutchs smoked and the direct clutch smoked!! we opted to put a used trans in for a fraction of the price of a rebuild!
Also when or if you drop the pan and you clean it thoroughly put a couple magnets in there I bought a few that are larger than a half dollar put four of them in there
Hi, I have a question. I just did the superior shift kit and followed another video of your which was very helpful, so thank you. My question is in regards to the gaskets that go on the separator plate. I cleaned off all of the old gasket (what a pain!) how do I put in the new gaskets? Do I use some sort of adhesive, do I just put them in place and hope they line up? I look forward to your reply, thanks. ;)
How do you know it was the torque converter that failed with all the metal? My 2012 Camry (115k) has metal in the pan and has an active recall on the torque converter until 150k. It’s at Toyota now and they are saying it’s an internal issue with the trans and not the torque converter ( but they have not removed the torque converter. My trans has not leaked. Just wandering if you have advise?
Great video, let me ask you something, my Mustang 2001 3.8 is acting up funny, sometimes feels normal (good compression) and sometimes I have to press the accelerator a bit deeper and then it gets the kick; I did a transmission service a year ago and we inspected the fluid and it was clean and no metal debris. I go through the gears and the car shift fine. Can the torque converter produce this symptoms for almost 3 years? I notice also that in the summer time is when it gets worse. I replaced so many parts (even if I didn't have a CEL or codes) Full tune up, new alternator and battery. I'm suspicious with a fuel rail sensor or a fuel pump (but the last one I heard that FP's simply die) Three mechanics have seen this car and they said that the car is fine. Thanks
Hi Hiram, Great Video Series! Saved my wallet with your videos. 'Rebuilt' my 04 Explorer 5R55S tranny after broken center band. 75k miles extremely clean inside when I dropped the pan. Replace the following: Net clutch Discs New Bands, New Servos (o-ring type) New solenoid pack New Seals/gaskets I am still getting slight shudder when starting slow. More so when up to op temp, while turning steering to side. It is not PS pump. Did not check clearance on clutch discs before reassembly, Found that video later. •What is your thought on new clutch discs being the correct spec out of box? I did NOT: replace pump parts. replace Torque converter replace pressure disc on the back of one drum, Do not have compression foot operated tool you have. What are your thought on why is still causing problem. I'm ok to open it up again but I'd like to do it ONE more time, not multiple times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the backyard mechanics out here. Bernie Valentin
I have a Mercedes 2007 GL 450 with 105,000 miles on it. I kept getting a jerking, stall, when starting out and giving it very much gas or starting out on a hill. Computer said it's running to rich or lean or something. Mechanic said to get a new MAF Sensor which I did and had it installed. Still has the problem and the check engine light is still on. Another mechanic drove it and said that it is coming from the tranny in 2nd gear, when he "got on it" from a standing start. I thought the tranny was going to come out when he stepped on it from zero MPH. He thinks it is probably a sensor or something that controls the tranny. He also mentioned a torque converter or something that could be the problem. I'm in Panama and don't speak Spanish and the mechanic speaks limited English. He has a buddy with a Benz computer we can plug it into and see what it says. I do remember seeing something on the original computer saying there was some kind of tranny issue but I don't remember the code it threw off. Has anyone got an ideas what this might be?
i had a transmission failure on my classic mini it has a combined sump diff, trans, engine are all one oil can you see where im going with this? the trans chewed its self up that feed metal to the engine bearings well its a bad day when you get metal in your oil for classic minis....
Hiram, My son has a 2007 Mustang with the 5r55s and the other day it started slipping into 3rd gear or sometimes just slamming into 3rd. We ordered and replaced the Solenoid pack. The pan had no metal nor did the magnet but when we finished it still shifts the same. Any input would be nice or if you know a good shop in phoenix that knows this transmission.
Would you reccomend the TransGo shift kit or the superior shift kit for the 5R55S? Thanks and keep up the awesome videos they have saved me countless times! You are amazing!
Hiram, What is the major cause of converter failure in this unit? Also, when it fails, is it the converter bearings that go out or the clutch and steel plate material that has so much metal contamination? Is this also a common failure in the 4R55E and 5R55W - N? Thanks for the video and info.
Hi Question i have is i have a torque converter clutch that doesnt work mainley when it gets warm, otherwise trans seems to shift ok it in a 1999 explorer 162 k miles, is it a converter issue ? therewas some grey matter in pan when i pulled it but no big pieces, thanks for any advise
Hi my problem is second gear takes long to engage, rpm goes up to 5000rpm before it does. Sometimes I have to come off accelerator for it to change. Any help please
my 2008 ford explorer will only go from park to first gear no matter what the shifter needle is on it wont do reverse or any other gear and it has my engine bogged down even in park please help??????
Aprovechando el tema, un problema con una igual, no mueve pero no tiene metal el el oil pan, tampoco seven partes rotas y cuando pones los cambias no se nota en lo mas minimo

Very informative, ty answered a few questioned I had especially about the pump

Ouch! That's some serious damage on that pump gear.
ROFLOL at 4:40!!! That is funny as hell, double-gasketing a separator plate.

What can case slipping into 4th and hard engaged reverse. I changed o/d servo, direct drive drum, clutches, seal new gasket kit, new valve body.

How does a torque converter grind up metal? Does it lose a fin or vain and that runs loose inside?

How is it possible to get a hold of you to have you do a Ford Explorer transmission 06 4 Wheel Dr.

i had a transmission failure on my classic mini it has a combined sump
diff, trans, engine are all one oil can you see where im going with this?

How many hours in labour is into this unit? By the time it's all cleaned up and re-done
If i purchase a rebuild kit does a pump come with it?😐

I really enjoy your vids. Is there a way I can detect if the trans on my 03 explorer's trans was rebuilt?
What torque company do you recommend for rebuilt converters? I'm needing a 5r55w one. Thanks!
