As a fellow Leica enthusiast it is always fun to watch your videos, thanks! I used the Leicaflex camera alongside my M-series for many years back when I started professionally in the early 1970s and have always appreciated them. I was one of the few that didn’t have a Nikon for my SLR with all its bells and whistles, but as the saying went back then, ‘you use a Leicaflex for the Lenses.’ A few observations; Too bad your light meter isn’t working, it’s maybe the main feature of the SL and where the camera gets its name, Selective Light metering, and is very accurate [remember, the metering M-series was years away with the M5]. The SL had advantages over the M-series besides the TTL view and metering; 1/2000 top shutter speed and with shutter-speed readout in the finder, easy to use big shutter dial, back opens for easy/quick film changing, depth-of-field preview, motor drive MOT version (I was a sports photographer), and easy as you mention closer-up (try the easy to use ELPROs close-up screw-in lens on your Summicron-R for even closer). The film advance could be better, its not racketed and so it is one long stroke, multiple shorts doesn’t work, but the meter is turned on with the advance at a 90 from the camera body, so you start the advance fairly far to the side as it is. That 50 Summicron-R (1964) was a new/first in lens design philosophy for Leitz, ‘higher contrast for perceived sharpness,’ and filtered down in later years to their newer lenses (the v3 50 M-Summicron being the most obvious direct ‘copy’), its a great lens almost 60 years later. The SL finder is super bright, but the older original Leicaflex is even brighter! No, it doesn’t focus across the frame, only the center (like an M-series ;-), but with an f2 lens its amazing. It’s the M3 in a SLR clothing, and you may like it. BTW, change [to metal] the red plastic lens release sooner than later, they can fail. The SL is built like a ‘tank,’ and superb Leica finish and quality in every way. Enjoy your new camera.

I’m in the market for one of these…how do you change out the red tab? Is this something you can readily find and self service, or would I need to send it in somewhere? I’ve seen a few for sale with silver tabs, should I just limit my searches for those models?

    Matt;
I believe that you can use 3 Cam lenses on the Leitz, Leicaflex SL or SL2, but not the “3rd Cam”or ROM lenses.
I have 3 Cam lenses and use them on my SL2 and it works perfectly.
The doc from KEH on Leica R Lenses is consistent with the Leica R WiKi site, and states: “A '3-cam' or 'triple cam' will work on all Leica SLR models”

Actually, unless there is a need for ROM lenses (designed for use on Leicaflex R Series and work on current Leica SLx Digital - as it communicates with the camera electronically) the 3-Cam lenses are the most universal - i.e. they work on all Leicaflex Cameras, but the additional Cams won't necessarily add any functionality not currently available on earlier 'flex' bodies

I bought my Leicaflex SL about 8 years ago. I sent it to Sherry Krauter a couple of years back for a complete CLA and to get the meter recalibrated for today's batteries. I paid a little over US $150 for the camera body, which is in near mint condition, and then spent $450 for the CLA. LOL. Sherry had to replace some parts which is what drove the cost up. But it didn't matter to me, I just wanted to keep such a fabulous old camera in tip top working condition. BTW, my Leicaflex SL came with the split prism screen. That viewfinder is truly a joy to use.
I also have a new in the box R3MOT with drive, and my workhorse R5... along with 2 M cameras, 4 Barnack cameras, and too many R, M, & LTM lenses to count.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom try one out! The Topcon lineup can be confusing.
Many people think they are some off brand, but they are most definitely not. They are every bit as nice as the Leica SLs (Film of course), and in many case much nicer. You need to make sure you’re getting your hands on the Topcon RE Super / Super D / Super DM though. Their other SLRs are not part of the professional line.
Topcon glass is also second to none. The cameras are also downright sexy. They have history and prominence too as they beat out the Nikon F for official US Navy use back in the 60s-80s.
I have two Leica M3s, one single and one double stroke. Also have a Leica SL. The Topcon film advance is smoother than all and the shutter sounds nicer and more satisfying than the Leica SL. It truly is a shame Topcon stopped innovating and fell out of relevance. But even as collectors items and a premium price right now, they are undervalued imho. Make sure to get your hands on one and get all of the glass you want before you make a video because I do believe once they are discovered value is going to shoot up to insane levels. The Topcor glass branded as “RE.Auto” is what you want. Don’t be tempted to get an adapter to mount the “UV.Topcor” stuff on an RE Super.
Did I say the cameras are freaking SEXY? Hah. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I own the standard original and picked up an SL for about $100 in great shape. Both cameras are well engineered and feel heavy. The SL feels more ergonomic compared to the original. The battery on the original was moved (I have no idea why it was in the front of the camera?). I must say that the SL loads and forwards film better than any film camera that I have ever used. I intend to try out some low ISO film tomorrow as a test run. I would compare it to a Topcon RE Super or 2 as far ergonomics and overall quality.
I originally purchased the Leica R lenses to be used with my Metabones speedbooster for Fujifilm X mount cameras. The performance is fantastic. I ended up buying an inexpensive Leicaflex (original) and ventured back into film photography with the R lenses.
The Leicaflex is still affordable. If you read some of the Leica magazines from the 1960's and 1970's, the Leicaflex was given equal footing with the M series.

It’s hard to imagine now how innovative the Selective Light metering was in the SL. It was a 1st, and even with the semi-reflective mirror that passed some of the light through for the meter to function in this way, the finder brightness was a SLR revelation. It was a very well thought out camera, but unfortunately didn’t have all the ‘Pro’ features of a Nikon or Canon, and Leica was just trying to catch-up with the established SLR completion, And the original price didn’t help for folks making a living with their equipment. We’re lucky with low prices for todays film users, but watch out for prism deterioration (glue separation), and meter not working ;-9. on these 50+ year old cameras.

You mentioned using a 1 cam on the SL. My understanding is that you can only use stop down metering then as that single cam is in the wrong position to activate the aperture lever in the body to communicate with the meter. The 2 can will work on both the original Standard Leicaflex and the SL. Without a working meter it really makes no difference though. I generally use a handheld meter or sunny 16 even on my working meter cameras.

The SL has a nice focus screen, corse center micro prism, and very fine outer (almost like ground-glass in use). The SL2 used a center split screen with outer corse micro prism ring (the combination I never liked), again finer micro prism outer full field. My favorite SL screen was a special order I had with a full ground glass with grid lines (the center ring was only to indicate meter area), great for lab micro photography and use with my 400mm, but I liked it as a general use screen too even if not as bright as the standard screen.

Matt- Leica R lens cams are a bit confusing. The first and second cam were to work with exposure on the Original Leicaflex and Leicaflex SL, respectively. Viewed from the back of the lens they are the siver sloped cams (when the red dot is at 12 0’clock) at 11 and 5 o’clock. Your 50 is from 1966 so itprobably originally has a single silver cam. It could have been subsequently upgraded to a two cam or three cam lens, retaining full original functionality. The third cam was added for the Leica R3 and is a small stubby black cam just inside the 5 o’clock cam at about 5:30. A three cam lens is fully compatible with any leicaflex or R with the exception of ROM function. Late in R production a third cam only version was added later with ROM settings. These 3rd cam only are the ones not compatible with your SL, the ROMs may not even mount (not sure about ROM). Your meterless SL should work fine with virtually any (excepting a Minolta-made zoom or two) one, two and three cam R lens. If the meter worked you could only meter stopped down with a single cam lens, which is no big deal.
For your style THE R lens to get for a Leicaflex SL is the 80/1.4 Summilux-R. I believe it is available in three cam and later versions. Get one with clean glass and barrel wear as it’s gonna cost you a pretty penny....

I know I am commenting on a video that is a year old, but I wanted to emphasize what has already been stated below. I just acquired a Leicaflex SL with 4 lenses through and Ebay auction, and the 35 f2.8, 21 f4, and 70-210 f4 are all 3 cam lenses. I did not check the 400mm f6.8 Telyt, but the 35 and the 21 operate fine with the match needle metering as far as I can tell. I won't really know for sure until I get this roll of HP5 Plus developed, but I am confident they are ok with the SL. You gave me a scare because I was planning to be able to use these on my R7 as well. So far I am enjoying the SL much more than I expected. I will say my Nikon F3 film advance is at least as smooth, but that one is not cocking a shutter and providing mechanical power to operate the mirror. Thanks for the review! I agree that the quality and build of the Leicaflex -- I have an SL2 -- and the R lenses are superb. The Summilux-R's -- the f1.4's -- though are generally quite expensive, likely due to the fact that they are popular as cine lenses. The 35mm f1.4 is especially bad, often running between $7k and $10k when it can even be found. But the Summicrons and the Elmarits are a lot more reasonable. The R lenses also work well on a Sony A3r and a Fuji GFX (in crop mode) with adapters. I also just discovered you can adapt them for use on a Leica M Mount -- which avoids the need to buy duplicate lenses.

There's always been talk online about the slight upgrades of the SL2 making it more prone to faults, but I've never heard of that in reality.
    Go with the SL2 IMO.
Never heard anyone that knows what they're talking about say the SL2 had any money-saving cuts to its quality... probably just an internet rumour.

Great video on a fine camera. I owned an SL and SL2 from new with lenses from 19mm to 250mm I was puzzled by your remark that the SL was better made than the SL2 - I noticed no difference in quality between them, indeed they replaced the grotty plastic lens release with a far better metal one. I think the Lenses are superb, especially the Canadian Mandler designs. Sadly the R cameras are no more probably due to lack of Autofocus although they focused manually far better than my Nikon AFD and S glass. I suspect that the choice of focusing screen and the rather long helicoid in the mount may account for this? As you note in a reply the 3 cam lenses work on the SL. All the third cam did was to enable both aperture and shutter speed to be seen in the finder of the SL2.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt. Take Anthony's advice and give the Zeiss Jena f2.8 50mm Tessar (Greek for four) a try. You can easily find them in M42 and Exakta mounts for very little outlay. The Tessar, from a historical prospective, was probably the most important lens development in history. It took photography to the next level in sharpness and affordability. Its nickname was "Eagle Eye." While somewhat soft wide open, at 5.6 and 8 it produces stunning images. The four element lens design is limited to f2.8, but this was huge step forward in the early 20th Century. There is a controversy that the Leitz Elmar is sort of a rip off of the Tessar, which to my untrained eyes looks plausible from the schematics of the two lenses. On the other hand there are only so many ways that you can arrange 4 elements. It is surprising how many great lenses use the Tessar design like the great Voightlander Color Skopar. As far as not working, many Tessar lenses were made in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. So they are at least 60 to 80 years old. And you are are not going to convince me that the Communist East Germans didn't use Siberian musk ox grease as the main lubricant. But good Tessars are out out there and easy to obtain in good working order. Besides Zeiss Jena, Zeiss Ikon (Stuttgart) produced their own interchangeable Tessars for the Icarex and Contarex cameras and of course the Tessar was the main lens on their long lived Contaflex series. Another controversary is which Zeiss company, East or West Germany, produced the best Zeiss Tessar. Both are great. Again, thanks for your videos and "down home" style.

With an R to L adaptor you get can use all the R lenses on your digital CL or a digital SL or SL2 if you get one
These are becoming very popular by those wanting more character, cheaper cost, smaller size and focal lengths or features such as macro the current full frame L lenses don’t provide
Unfortunately many enthusiasts and movie producers are buying them up so their cost is increasing all the time, specially the fast ones like the 50mm and 80mm f1.4’s
They were in their hey day top shelf camera’s and lenses. The bodies are very much overlooked by many and as such are really cheap

I was offered a Leica SL some years back. The worst decay ever! Mirror and pentaprism, dropping flakes, like trees in Fall. Shutter erratic. Often need new shutter drum. Glad your OK. The beauty of Japanese cameras, is better workmanship, easy to repair or replace. I wasn't impressed when they were new..

@ Mercury battery issue I found a video that explains how, one can substitute with hearing aid batteries! He also addresses important points about voltage, however the video is 9 years old, so it might be advisable to check if the hearing aid batteries of today still deliver around 1.3 Volts.

As always an interesting and enjoyable video. I am far from a big Leica fan but when I was in High School, the original Leicaflex (the model before the SL) was always held up as something that poor student that I was could aspire to. I am presently looking for a good original Leicaflex body that is in good condition, with a working meter AND a cheap price like you got. At a photo show, I bought for a buck or two a Leicaflex 2 cam T4 adapter. This will allow me to use all my $10 Soligor and Vivitar T4 lenses, which always outperform their cheap price and reputation. It will be fun to walk around with a Leica but not worry about losing anything that cost $4,000 and anyway no one will really be able to tell the difference between the Leica and T4 lenses. Fun video!

Thanks Tom! I hope you find a nice SL :) Yes you get to walk round with a nice Leica and not worry that it is a £2K M6 too! :) ..AND the photos will probably look similar on film :) I will try to do a Leica M vs Leica R shoot out when I get chance. To see if I can see a difference.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I meant your SL video gave me the idea to also get an SL body, plus a Tamron/Leicaflex adapter. So now I can use my existing Tamron Adaptall lenses on the Leicaflex. I have had a Tamron 90mm macro for many years, around 40, and a 35-70 zoom. Not Leica glass I know but the prices are mostly outside my comfort zone. But I have ordered a "cheap" 50mm Summicron.
(I'm not sure where the 039 stuff came from, I was trying to include a pic of my SL with a Tamron zoom attached, but the pic just would not paste, so I think the time of 0:39 am registered instead)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The 24mm 2.8 Elmarit-R is a very good Lens with excellent image quality and low vignetting. It is designed by Minolta (which may be why we see so good Sony Lenses today). Some of my friends who are professional photographers are very happy with the 24mm Leica R Lens.
The back focus distance of the 24mm is less than with most others Leica R Lenses, which makes it unsuitable for earlier Leicaflex cameras.
