I'm annoyed that they got rid of Loco Chanel but the song they replaced it with is so much better, It actually talks about the history of drag and gives him some agency but ya'know

I loved the proshot and the movie equally, for different reasons. The movie really took advantage of medium of film and made it a dazzling visual masterpiece. I loved how seamless the transitions were from the "real world" and Jamie's fantasy/what's in his head. Sometimes when they have a movie adaption, the transition between the two worlds is rough and the viewer finds it hard to suspend reality, something that is easy in theatre.
That said, I still wish they didn't cut out "The Legend of Loco Chanel". I really wanted them to fit it somewhere in the film. Here's to hoping that the new song gets an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song!

For me, the changes worked as it's a film. The feel is much more like the original documentary. I loved that they showed clips of it in the closing credits.

Seconding what others said. Coco Chanel is my favourite song from the musical by far but honestly the replacement is excellent and made me cry. I would've liked if they could've squeezed Loco in somewhere but... I wouldn't want them to take the new song out so I'm fine with it.

'This Was Me' was sung by Richard E. Grant and Holly Johnson - lead vocalist of Frankie Goes to Hollywood - absolutely amazing, and establishing a much stronger character in Hugo.

Great scene by scene breakdown! On the note of It Means Beautiful, I actually thought Lauren Patel's performance of Pritti was directed in a way that it minimized any implication that she was secretly in love with Jamie, which I prefer. The way she delivers the final lines and her expression gave me the vibe that it's more of, as a shy person, she's living vicariously through Jamie, or that she got a boost of inspiration in that moment to become a social leader and make way for people like Jamie. They cut the last 4 lines about her being insecure, and right at the words "but not free" it cuts to the confrontation scene with Jamie's dad, which implies that she's mostly concerned for him. This more solid "ally" arc follows through nicely with her becoming a baby mass movement organizer at prom. The added nod to Emmeline Pankhurst in the prom prep montage also suggest they wanted to position her this way. I quite like this direction, I've always found the "secretly in love with gay BFF" trope a bit iffy & unnecessary.

from how it sounds, it seems like all the very north east britian-centric vocabulary and humour has been removed so its more "digestible" for non- brits...which is kinda sad tbf. There was something so fun about seeing a musical in which the jokes and dialogue sounds like stuff id hear everyday at school

Living here in Los Angeles I never saw the show before seeing the movie. I only saw one song online performed by Layton Williams. So the movie to me was FANTASTIC. I saw it with a preview audience so no one knew anything about it at all. But the crowd clapped at the end of 2 of the songs, and at the end of the film as well. We all thought it was great! I've just gotten my ticket for the stage musical when it comes here in January. Can't wait to see Layton performing, and what reaction the Americans will have to it! 😍

I really liked the stylistic choices for the musical numbers. Even as a big theatre fan I can sometimes take a while to get into the swing of movie musicals and for the suspension of disbelief to kick in. So I think it was very smart to have the first act numbers be more stylistic and to gradually bring in the realism for the second act. I also had no idea Sarah Lancashire could sing like that!

I didn't really like the Movie. As a massive Everybody's talking about Jamie fan I feel like they missed what people enjoy about the show. I love Jamie because it's a camp fun time. Yes, it deals with real-world issues but it's an ultimately uplifting musical. The movie seemed to want to make a coming-of-age film like Billie Elliot with much more of a focus on real-world issues and less on the camp. This makes the music sound really out of place (even the weirdly toned down version) as most of the songs are very larger than life and camp. The acting fell really flat for me (It felt like everyone was told to tone it down when they should be playing it up) and some of the characterizations seem really odd (Mrs hedge has gone from being passively homophobic to openly so and the role of dean is downplayed). Lauren Patel is amazing as Pritti and for the most part, the costuming is great.

for the most part i did feel the movie fell a bit flat... it wasnt as tight and flow as well as the show - i think the set changes and costume changes in the show keep that energy but it the movie it didnt work as well.
I think had this been a movie rather than a musical it would have been far better.
I do like the montage of him being a kid...i also like the historical song at the drag store.
What was distracting was the "My boy" song -- i'm almost certain that wasnt the actress's singing voice... it looked lip-synced but poorly done...it wasnt as emotional as i remembered... it was played very flat.
I would say the second half of the movie kinda went downhill... it felt rushed
