    I feel like 'this was me' needs to be integrated into future productions of 'Jamie' it's sublime.
    I personally really liked the function the teacher plays, she's someone who's homophobic but would never acknowledge it to herself or anyone else. Jamie pushes her buttons in very specific ways and I think she thinks it's her mission to take him down a few pegs and doesn't see her responsibility to acknowledge the specific ways in which queer kids need to be kept safe. She very pointedly ignores the homophobic slurs towards Jamie and racism directed at Pritti, instead treating her as some kind of pet project. I've seen so many of those teachers so I thought it was subtle but powerful how low key her antagonism is. Side note, why is a teacher in a low income public school who works on her feet all day wearing (imitation?) Jimmy choos??

    • @beardedartisan
      @beardedartisan 2 года назад +18

      I agree! I think Miss Hedge is an accurate portrayal of passive bigotry - someone who doesn't think of themselves as bigoted because they don't use slurs and are not actively hostile, but who still enables bigotry and oppression by not standing up to it and who probably thinks that marginalised people "bring it on themselves" by being different and shouldn't get "special treatment". The kind of person who'd say "I don't care what you to do, as long as you don't do it around me". And she's an accurate portrayal of how, when people like that are called out on their behaviour, they will often double down and become more hard-line bigoted rather than do any self-reflection.
      As for the Jimmy Choos, I have the published libretto and it refers to them in the stage directions as "a grace note of fabulousness". Miss Hedge is a repressed and unsatisfied person - she had dreams for herself too, once, but they clearly never worked out, and she takes her bitterness out on the kids by drumming it into them that their lives are probably going to suck. That's why Jamie gets under her skin - because he refuses to compromise on who he is or lower his expectations, and she resents him for that. But the Jimmy Choos are a way of showing that she still stubbornly wants to express herself somehow, and that's the spark of humanity in her that Jamie might be able to reach.

    I liked the stage musical a lot but the movie hits different, in the most positive way possible. Hugo is my favourite character in both and I was a tad bit sad for not having The legend of Loco Chanel in the movie but damn what they did instead was strong! Maybe one of the best pieces of musical cinema made in a long time!
    Why Amazon Prime chose to advertise that dreadfull Cinderella instead of Jamie is a mystery to me. Cinderella almost made me hate myself for loving musicals, Jamie on the other hand is a perfect example of a musical movie I could see everytime.

    My mum's watching it right now and I know she's going to bawl at the 80s bit. I thought it was so well done, and totally agree on the songs being like music videos. I think often musical adaptations are weird because they don't have a clear direction/style for the songs. He's My Boy is one of my favourite ballads in musical theatre, and I'm not sad they cut If I Met Myself Again. I loved all the cameos, and also didn't spot John until the last second! Actual Jamie's mum is in it for a second too. Those are my random thoughts, but I loved it and am so relieved since I actually love the stage show!

I was intrigued about the movie though and watched it the first day it was on Prime. The stage show might not but the movie definitely will go down as a must watch for Queer youth imo going forward. "This Was Me" has me in tears. It was a great message towards all the kids that want to do drag but have no clue why drag is done or where it stems from. It's counter culture and an act of rebellion. It was just a really good movie.

THE EDITING IN THAT MUSICAL IS EVERYTHING! the cuts are on the beat, the chorus-lines are wide-shots, it works with frame-ratio, moving so smoothly between dream-sequences and reality, and not to mention how it actually emphasises the gorgeous choreography instead of suffocating it. ugh so good. everything modern musical-films fuck up, it's doing correctly. like, i was so ready to hate on the film and then "you dont even know it" started and??? i just sat there like :o damn. guess i gotta like this now?

Max and Lauren were absolutely incredible as Jamie and Pritti, the flashback scenes were such a brilliant addition and Margaret New might be a new favourite character! I agree with everyone in the comments about hating Miss Hedge because she's a passive homophobe, but I think Sharon Horgan did a brilliant job of making her sinister. I feel in the show, she is slightly too comical, whereas the characterisation in the movie made me really hate her.

    I saw the show the day before the film came out and I definitely prefer the show but the film is still incredible. When I listened to the soundtrack for the film before the film was released, i didn’t like the fact that legend of loco channel had been taken out and I didn’t like it’s replacement, however in the actual film with context to what the song is about, I started to love the song this was me, especially once I realised that John played young Hugo after like the third time watching the film. I much prefer the stage version of work of art, as I believe the way the song is directed is a lot better and the climax of the song not being in the film version made it feel as tho that breaking point moment was just missing from the film. I do like the fact that the stuff with like the dick gon swing and the teachers part had been cut and I definitely agree with it for a film adaptation, however the transition cutting those verses out just felt forced and it would’ve been a lot better if an new verse to the song had been added in that gap. I prefer the music in the stage production purely because I feel many of the songs became a bit too electrified if u know what I mean for the film, whereas in the songs for the original stage version you could tell that they were less edited and you could hear the individual instruments more. I love the sets for the film and the locations they chose and I believe it is a huge improvement to the production, however I do still love the set for the show just because of how they utilise the structure for it. I met myself again was the only song that got a standing applause mid-show when i saw the show on tour and I think it should’ve been included in the film with a style of storytelling like in this was me, similar to how it is shown in the stage production. I think the casting choice could not have been better for the film especially with max as Jamie and John being included in the cast, and as far as I prefer John as Jamie from watching the bootleg of the show I think that max is good at taking the character for Jamie that John created in his performance as him and pressing down how exaggerated he was for a film audience and making Jamie slightly more mature for the differences in the storyline and I love how they cast shobna gulati who played ray in the cast for the stage version to play ray in the film as no one in my eyes could’ve caught rays character and the way she acts with the story. Overall I think it’d a fucking good film and a fucking good show and both tellings of the story are pretty much perfect. Also I love the way BBC totally coincidentally decided to put the drag queen at 16 documentary on iPlayer right after the film came out.

    Maybe it's because I'm not British, but I absolutely hated this movie 💀😂😭 (Also, the "representation" to me was really cringey and stereotypical) I dunno, I think it's because this movie was so clearly one-dimensional, in my humble opinion, as someone who has done drag, like why does Jamie, the drag queen, have to be presented as someone who appears to be so bitchy? And omg I highly doubt the Muslim girl would have been as supportive as was shown. Like my ex-boyfriend is alergian, and he would tell me how him and his mom left Isalm because their family renounced them because he came out as bisexual. So in defiance as part of leaving, his mom also took off her hijab. I dunno, again I just feel like this movie is stereotypical and not nuanced and very uncomfortably British.
    (What I said may make feel people feel a certain type of way, which I totally understand! But just because it's different, doesn't mean these life experiences are any less valid)

      I don't think it's a very good musical for similar reasons as yourself (it just feels very "How do you do, fellow kids?" and also feels like a less nuanced, more one-dimensional riff on Billy Elliot but going all the way by actually making the protagonist gay) but I do take issue with your framing of the Muslim girl not likely being accepting of Jamie. I know plenty of Muslim people in Britain, especially of younger generations, who have no problem with gay people. Most religions are anti-gay and while followers of Islam are maybe more likely to be homophobic, that does not mean all of them will be, especially not when they're living in a more progressive and accepting place like the UK and have grown up there.

      @@juicybutterriblydrab Yes exactly! And fair enough! Again, that's one experience and what you've said is 100% valid! I suppose a part of it personally for me is that, even apart of the gay thing, is what annoys me is that when someone says that they're"Christian" "Muslim" "Jewish" "Buddhist" "Hindu" heck even atheists, that because of this they are a good person. And it's like...omg what no? You're a good person because you are one, not because of a belief or lack thereof you have. If that makes sense? And I suppose it goes back to Jamie that annoys me because you can also be gay and be a shitty person (James Charles) Or bisexual (Shane Dawson) or non-binary (Jeffery Star) - Omg the anti-trinity hahahaha - Okay no but seriously, I want more gay stories where they feel more fleshed out or a romance story between two guys or girls that has absolutely nothing to do with coming out or even accepting themselves (Like imagine a story where straight people had to accept their straightness before getting together with someone??? It actually sounds ridiculous and hilarious hahahaha) Like also, drag race exists where we get to see a colorful array of individuals with different personalities than whatever the f*ck Jamie tried to do 🥴

I’m American, so I can’t necessarily speak on the British Muslim population, but in US statistics, Pew research in 2017 showed that slightly over half of Muslims in the US think homosexuality should be accepted. And in my personal experience, most of the Muslims I’ve met have been supportive of the LGBT community. It’s awful that OP’s ex had to go through that experience of being rejected by his community.
