Because no one he’s worked with has ever had a bad thing to say about him, and the Glee cast love him and are friends with him to this day. It’s not a reversion. The internet is this cruel, and it’s only a matter of time before another celebrity/viral star is labeled a horrible person/racist/homophobe/transphobe/ableist/etc. even if it was otherwise clear that person was a good person from every other action they did and it is a character they played that sucked or said a joke that was even in line with today’s values but worded like a horrible person/etc.
      There were probably more incidents of the internet choosing more to suddenly hate others for some reason, usually because of a character or a joke.

People feel a lot more entitled to publicly treat others more as objects than actual people. It makes it worse when people decide that the person you present on a screen is the person you are in real life, and if they, as a fan, head-canon something then it's true even if the celebrity they are a fan of tells them it's not.

    The contestant said it made her uncomfortable. The producers declared that it was inappropriate and against the rules to have contact with a contestant outside of the competition (it could lead to favoritism or harrassement)!🙄

      I just read about this. He (and his wife) said that his email wasn't flirty, but that it just read "Hey, it’s Matthew. If you don’t mind, would love to get your number and talk you through some things." and clarified that he supposedly contacted her because he was trying to get her a job as a choreographer on a different project he was working on. It's a he said/she said situation and though he obviously wasn't supposed to be contacting her outside of the show, there's no evidence that he was actually trying to flirt with her.
      Tbh it seems like she may have misunderstood his intentions with the text and though contacting her was definitely unprofessional, this story doesn't prove that Matthew Morrison is a bad/creepy guy. He may just struggle with understanding social cues and boundaries (which honestly, would fit in with a lot of the"weird" stuff he's done).

    I can remember at school back when everyone was first starting to create MSN and MySpace accounts my IT teacher telling the entire class very clearly that being behind a screen excuses nothing and that you should never say anything about anyone online that you wouldn't be 100% willing to say to their face if they were standing right in front of you - I admit I haven't always stuck to that rule but I've tried my hardest to follow it because honestly, it's a damn good rule to have. And if more people lived by it, the internet would genuinely be a much healthier landscape than it is now.
    I also feel like a lot of this also has to do with the fact that people are seemingly incapable of realising that whatever they happen to post isn't posted in a complete vacuum. I've seen people try and justify sending death-threats and spamming hate with "well, I only left one comment, so it doesn't really matter...". No. You may personally have left one comment but what you've actually done is contribute one comment to a sea of hundreds and potentially thousands. And when all of these comments are essentially saying the same thing and amounting to "the world of all these thousands of people would be a better place if you didn't exist"? That's what paves the way for something genuinely awful to happen.

      The worst thing the writers on Glee did was change the satirical nature present in the first 2 seasons to a sort of fake earnest, run of the mill teen drama. Will, as well as many of the characters, are not supposed to be “good people” or a “good” teacher. Like he blackmails Finn to be in the Glee club by planting drugs in his locker in the first few episodes. I feel people tend to forget that the actor and the character are two separate people. If you hate the character because they are problematic and come across as a terrible person, that's just the actor doing their job. They are performing based on what is needed for the character and what the director wants from them for the role. People have to remember that movies, tv shows, etc are not real and what characters do in onscreen, are not actions the actor would necessarily get themselves into in everyday life. It's just sad to see people tear someone apart when they didn't do anything to deserve it

  • @TerretYeth

    Matthew Morrison is getting the Hathaway treatment. When it comes to public personalities or those with high-profile jobs, careers or positions (entertainment, politics, lifestyle, news or journalism, doesn’t seem to really matter), people love to hate on anyone who seems too earnest or too invested in their craft/field/milieu. Maybe it can come across as attention-seeking (the “teacher’s pet” syndrome), but I think it’s often just eagerness being confused with hungriness. People should be allowed to really like things, to pursue their careers, hobbies or interests without getting automatically being labeled a try-hard. I personally don’t think it’s generally fueled by jealousy or anything like that (probably more boredom or a superiority complex), but people sure do love to dunk on someone who’s already down. What a weird instinct.
    That’s it, that’s my op-ed.

      The whole Anne Hathaway thing is a spot on comparison, that was wild. Especially since they’ve both got that perceived overly earnest theater kid thing. It’s certainly interesting (awful) that the internet is more likely to collectively bully someone for being a “try hard” than for being a genuinely terrible person. The sad thing is the mass internet hatred of Anne Hathaway actually impacted her career for a while-no one wanted to cast her in anything til Christopher Nolan gave her another shot in Interstellar. I think she’s pretty well recovered from it now. I just hope the same doesn’t happen to Matt Morrison, and he can still get work; I hate the idea that a bunch of bored 14 year olds could troll a man out of a career because they think a character he played ten years ago is cringe.

    Absolutely agree with all of this! And honestly, as problematic as Will’s character writing could be, no one attacks Jane Lynch for playing Sue who was a literal villain and said so many messed up things every single episode and often to the high schoolers (that I admittedly laughed at most of the time when it was airing). The thing about Glee is that it was FULL of flawed, selfish, and cruel characters who mostly grew up and became better people throughout the show and it’s ironic that people who hate on the show or specific characters for being problematic turn around and are cruel to the real humans just portraying a character.

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 3 года назад +1

      People are more accepting that Sue is a villain because she was against the Glee Club (making her an antagonist) but that she did everything to undermine it, including illegal methods. It goes against the Glee Club trying to find itself in a world out to get them. In other words, her role is consonant with her villainy and the themes of the show.
      However, the supposed good guy and leader of the Glee Club is therefore the good guy and therefore has to be morally upright. Furthermore, it is expected in a story of the acceptance of misfits that the leader has some morals and does not engage in the same behavior putting those people down. Once it was realized that Will Schuster engaged in hateful words, questionable behavior, and also casually mocked his students, then his role doesn’t fit how he is portrayed.
      And since Glee is both beloved and based on stereotypes, once the internet figured out Will was a bad teacher because he was inconsonant with today’s values and did questionable stuff even in the era of Glee, all the love will turn to hate and then will be amplified because the Internet does not do anything by half-steps.

    • @coryharbour57
      @coryharbour57 3 года назад +5

      @@iantaakalla8180 I totally get that but it’s delusional of them. Lol People being harder on Will (and thus Matthew Morrison) than they are on Sue just because they hold him to a higher standard is wild when she was so much worse. A big flaw of Will’s is that he’s constantly stuck in the past and never really grew up, which is a common case for people who never leave their home town to experience a world outside of it. He decides to run glee club to relive his glory days. That’s why he’s doesn’t listen to them and makes them do songs his club did and he brings back April Rhodes, etc. He has just as much life to live and learn from as the students. He’s a bad teacher, absolutely, but not a bad person. Sue is a bad person even though they try to give you reasons to feel bad for her or like her here and there.
      And to say the internet doesn’t do anything half-ass’d is an understatement in this situation. Lol It’s one thing to meme a character to death, it’s another to take it onto the real person. Will and Sue are characters, they’re not actually bullying anyone or making mistakes impacting real people. These people on the internet are real and hurting real people. No matter how poorly written Will is, there is no excuse for that and it’s beyond hypocritical considering these internet kids think they’re standing on a moral high ground and that’s why it’s okay for them to harass him.

I just think that Sue was completely right when she said “you don’t have any adult friends, so you asked your student to be your best man”, they made the character high key creepy, but that doesn’t have anything to do with Mathew, he was just playing a role. And also, Mathew and most of the cast only have a 6-8 year gap between them, so it’s not THAT akward that he was friends with the glee students.

    the problem is people not being able to separate the art from the artist. while matthew morrison has played lots of different roles, he’s probably most known for will schuester. and yeah, will is a really problematic character, but seeing as he’s just a tv character, there’s nothing wrong with saying you don’t like that character or pointing out things that were wrong. in fact, i think it’s a good thing that we as a society can critique pop culture like that.
    however, it becomes an issue when it’s turned into people making fun of matthew morrison and projecting his problematic character onto him. we as the general public know so little about him that it’s really not fair to legitimately bully him on the internet. yes, his character was a shitty person but that doesn’t mean we get to take out our hatred for will on matthew!!

    I agree with the majority saying Glee hasn't aged well however this is no excuse to send hate Matthew Morrison's way. He has done NOTHING to deserve this. People are so cruel and yet it seems to be the generation that is over sensitive and easily offended doing the online harassment. Pick a lane! Wishing the best for Matthew and hope this isn't the end of his career or worse. This news is truly heartbreaking. Thanks Amy for bringing attention to this issue.

    Always loved Matthew Morrison - I was so confused when I saw how the internet decided to rip him to shreds, seemed like they all confused the problem that was Glee's Will Schuster (and other assorted characters he was asked to play) with the actor behind the characters. They're not one and the same, actors rarely get a say in anything their character says, does and becomes, not to mention, like you said, 2010 really was a different time we've come so far since.
    Thank you for standing up for him. It breaks my heart to see a man's reputation, character and career get crushed like this simply because he's been cringe in the past. Lord knows I have been/am one big cringe fest, but it doesn't make me a bad person by any stretch of the imagination, and I would hate for this to happen to me, so seeing it happen to him kinda terrifies me.
    Man is talented and seems like a good person underneath some of the garb he's been asked to do. Leave the poor man in peace, let him just bless us with his angelic voice and leave those bad times behind him.
    So, yeah, thanks for this justice piece!

    I agree with everything you said! Thank you for being such a positive light! It is so sad to see all of the terrible things sad about him. Thank you for spreading kindness

    As an actor, he is SO NOT my cup of tea and i'm not a fan of his work, but for facksake i'm not gonna go harass the poor dude! He's done nothing to me! I just consume other media and move on! FACK!! (i'm way more offended by Lea Michelle and can't STAND her for actual reasons but even then i'm not gonna go harass her!) Also has anyone thought to ask HIM to weigh in on HIS experience in all this?
