Mold and wood rot will spread over time with just the moisture in the air. It's important to get it all out and not leave contaminated wood ( spores ) so it won't spread as easily again. A quality - through contractor would sister the rafters or trusses a put down some (copper napthane) wood preservative to stop the mold- rot growth on areas not removable. Mold and it's mycotoxins are a burden to the body add those to other one's we are exposed to and someday it might tip you over.

That’s garbage. As soon as the rain stops coming in, it will dry out. It won’t spread spores everywhere. It’s a dry attic. I’ve never in my life seen mold spread in a dry attic. Go ahead and keep spreading your mold propaganda.

Doing metal roofing. Installed half the house and done but the opposing side on this double wide is rotten. The vent cut is priceless for me. I had no idea what was going to be the easiest thing to do on those.

Yes. It went quite well. A learning experience for sure. With the help of so many to refer information from was priceless for me and I thank you and the others out there in RUclips world!
I added the SolarFlex (I think it what it's called) using a roller and a couple of the 5 gallon jugs, 3 total for the 60X18 double wide to coat the roofing as well. That and adding an attic fan I happen to have from my company stock (3300sqft fan for this 1600 total sq ft attic) and it runs very seldom during the hottest of days here in SoEast Arizona. It helped A LOT reflecting the sun's raze.

Wow I can’t imagine paying for a whole new roof and then deciding not to pay the few bucks for another 2x4 to sister up the damaged one. Bad move by the homeowner. Super informative video though!

Not Clean at all. There's no good reason to leave rot or any debris under a sheet replacement. Then there was no depth setting done on the saw. Definitely amature hour.
Plus why break on same seam as above ply? Half ass amateur hour

Definitely a helpful video. I’m not a carpenter or roofer, I drive fork trucks for a living, we recently moved into a house earlier this year, and slowly I’ve been fixing things going on with it. On the backside of the house, it’s missing the gutter, facia, and the wood underneath is looking a little bad. I may need to take shingle back and check to see how bad the damage is there. Right now I can hear a squirrel or something in there nibbling on things. Needs to get fixed.
I just trapped a raccoon that had chewed two holes in our roof.yes , sometimes you must expose the ugly damage,remove it and start with fresh material if u can afford it.
@@kevbosgarage good, it actually looks and functions normal now, I did some of it but has a company come and finish it, no more squirrels in the attic lol
I trapped the raccoon with a Cage trap on the roof.then pulled off the damaged shingles exposing the decking.screwed down some ice shield material I snagged from a dumpster over the hole then slid in a few 3 tab shingles at the area.no leaks or critters.I’ll have to cut in some plywood and fix it properly with matching shingles.

I just watched a video of a guy using his nail gun without nails adjusting to the deepest setting and tricking the safety and driving the old nails most the way through the plywood. Appears to make it much easier to remove the plywood.

That was crazy! I always cringe when people use a circular saw near nails and “hope” they don’t hit one. Attic lumber is tinder dry; a few sparks on a hot day: goodbye house.

They always do it. That among other reasons I decided to become my own contractor.

I’m surprised the customer didn’t spring for a new board to be sistered to the bad board. It’s what, like 5 min to add a piece there? Couldn’t be that expensive.
The fact that they would charge them for this is deplorable as it’s 5 mins of work and less that 10 bucks to accomplish. Besides the factor of money your putting your company’s name to subpar work by not doing it right. I’m sure they’ll come up with a reasonable excuses about money or the customers wishes but I was raised to know right from wrong

is your blade set to a certain depth so you're not slicing into the beam?
Yes, it’s approximately 1/16 larger than the depth of the plywood. This case being 1/2 plywood the blade depth is just slightly higher then that.
I use a cats claw and pull some of the nails out before I pull the plywood I recommend one makes the job easier
Devin Manns absolutely true. Forgot it in the shop on the job. But it shows homeowners you can make do without any fancy tools. 😂

@8:08, why did you not fix that 2x4 before you nail the plywood?
As we would normally recommend changing the 2x4 out completely, this homeowner didn’t want to pay for it.
You could even sister a 2x4 next to this one for added strength.

No the framing had a double truss.

When cutting the plywood, how did you not cut through the rafters?? Did you angle the blade to half an inch to make sure it didn’t go through anything else?

Yes simply set the depth the a 1/16 shy of the existing plywood and cut. Best of luck!

Chris Parmenter osb is actually superior to plywood. Doesn’t delaminate, higher sheer strength and cheaper. Just saying 🤷🏻♂️
Not a chance you will be seeing me replace with OSB. I live in Oregon and OSB ruined my kitchen window cause it deteriorated from a leak. If it had been CDX it would have just ran off the roof and saved my top plate and window frame! Just sayin!

I tore off a 22 square roof and 1/3 of the roof deck was rotten,property owner refused to pay me any additional money to replace it and I had to replace it in order to get paid for the roof I already had torn off.

George Heller yeah the blade depth is deep, but notice the guide isn’t touching the deck. It’s saw control.

A baffle, it's a major component in the ventilation to your attic to help hot air escape and to prohibit moisture from building up in the attic. Fresh air comes thru the soffit, the baffle(The pink looking device) directs it up and in between ridges of your attic to the top most furthest most point(usually the peak of the roof)and the hot air that builds in the attic escapes either out of the turtle vents or a ridge vent.
I need to learn how to make crickets for a metal roof
They are pretty tough at first, just gotta learn the degrees of a roof pitch and apply that to the support 2x4's so it can be flush to the roof. And just got to make sure you make it big enough/not too small

Why wouldn’t you just replace the whole sheet rather than cutting out sections?
Just saves on materials I guess, that or the homeowner only paid for say 5 sheets and there was a bunch of smaller spots of rot that would need a half a sheet of replacing. Doesn't make sense to use up a whole sheet for a small chunk of rot
I have had homeowners say why are you taking out a full piece when only half is rotten ?so I said you know what you're right. and I pieced in the roof like a jigsaw puzzle hahaha!

831vtc t2 watch the entire video and I explain that I was using only what the homeowner had at his house and said make due. He was low on funds as the roof we tore off was inly 6 years old.
What happed that to cause the old roof to only last 6 years?
@@johnfrancis256 poor ventilation, improper nail placement, not enough nails per shingle, poor decking below shingles, leaking from improper installation. Many factors can cause a roof system to fail prematurely

Fixing a roof is fixing a roof... don't half-ass it. Do your estimate correctly... don't itemize every single thing, except the cost of the materials. No professional tradie would've done what you just did. Did you ask the owner if they wanted tar-paper between the decking and the shingles as well, lol?
There's always the possibility with damage like this of some rotten trusses... price it in. It takes like a whole 10"-15" to sister some trusses.
Once I saw smoking on roof, I lost interest.

Why nail the new plywood into place over all the rotten chunks of moldy debris? Now that crap is sealed into place. Homeowner’s worst nightmare.
Ask the homeowner who didn’t want to pay for truss work even when he was advised of the potential consequences…

Cheap boss and homeowner at the time of this video. I no longer work here. Had to work with what I had.
Not a good job at all. Shuddy. Everything affected has to be replaced and old damaged wood taken out. All of it. Rotting wood will continue to rot.
Lousy job for lousy cheap homeowner. There should be changed all rotten plywood and all rotten wood rafters. They will get what they paid for.
If the home owner wouldn't not can't paid to have the roof done right don't do it all... Take a picture or two to show them.. anyway..
