Ok. I know you uploaded this awhile ago but i just had to tell you, i think you have one of the most helpful, no bullshit, roofing videos i have found on RUclips to date. You make it literally so easy to learn. Thank you!
@@AurumRoofing my grandmother has hole in her roof and I am a young lady I have no experience and am not sure how to apply the felt I have all the tools but am concerned about properly measure the thickness of the new plywood my young adult son is going to help we have been watching your videos and are pretty confident but I am a single mom on fixed income and have to do it to close the holes in her roof
This is literally the exact problem I have. Best roof repair videos on YT. Hands down. Saved me tons and gave me confidence to attack these types of home repairs myself.
Did you tackle it? Also curious if you attempt to notify HO insurance? Home Warranty? Or just did it yourself? New home owner 3mos in and inspections never note roof issue and this was exactly what I found when I went into the attic. Strong wind and heavy rains for last three days probably weaken the nails and lift I’m assuming. Also curious if any permit or note you did for future prevent care now that it’s repair
@jacksonphan5870 In most cases such as this video. The cost to do this roof repair is typically under the homeowners' insurance deductible, which may not make sense to submit or file an insurance claim.
@@AurumRoofing thanks my friend! Grateful it’s sunshine today before one week of rain so I get to atleast patch it up with some flex tape. And flex seal for now til I get to repair it like this video. Thanks again for your videos!!!
I wish it had an explanation of how to cut around that pipe if you couldn't get the board over it. There's no way to put plywood down over the one I have so I have to cut around it somehow and I don't know how to do that best
I have been watching so many roofing videos...this one makes sense. My exhusband built a storage shed and instead of making a good strong roof, he put roof coating only lasted about 3 years. Now, he is not around so I have to come in and do the roofing myself. The roof on the shed is exposed to south Arizona climate strong sun and monsoons in the summertime. I need to fix the roof quick before the monsoons come again. Well, thanks for this video it helps what I need to do next.
Just found your channel today! I've been preparing myself to fix the incredible gross negligence of the home builder that made my house in th 1980s.. my roof is a disaster. I didn't care as much when I had help but now as a Widow, it's my job to keep things safe and working. Your videos are seriously so cut and dry, right to the point that it's easy to follow!! Thank you for this!
Excellent, it would be great to do a roof that only need to change that part of the shingles and how to take out that part and replace just that part with shingles
Thank you for all your help. I really learned alot from your video. More to get someone to get up on my roof.. Lol. Again thank you. God bless you always. From...Deer Park Texas.
Great video with explanations. Extremely helpful. Our roof was damaged by a hurricane. I feel more confident in doing the repair after watching your video. Keep up the great work. Know that you are providing very practical advice, greatly appreciated.
Very helpful and straight forward! Love that the camera isn't shaky, that you mentioned needed tools/materials, and that you narrated after filming opposed to during!
I was actually wondering that just the other day (narrating after filming) but it's very nice to know our audience agrees. Thank you very much for your constructive comment.
Thank you for this . Wile checking last week, I have 3 areas I need to do this. I did notice previous owner did not use Plywood, They used partical board where the soft spot is. Also seen my gutter is not installed with a small slope for water. The water built up and the partical board soaked up water , turned to mush. Glad I seen this , still can salvage shingles . Great video. An idea for another video is venting caps fir the top of roof line. Thinking to add them . That would be very cool to see. Thanks from Canadas rainy Vancouver Island
Venting Caps? Do you mean Ridge Vent? If so, we do have a How- To video on Ridge Vent install, it should be under the How-to playlist. I'm glad this helped you. Cheers from Pflugerville, Tx :)
Thank you. I have to repair a hole in my mother's roof and I appreciate your video. You have no idea how afraid I was until I watched this. You make it seem so effortless. I know it will still be a task, I am just not as afraid. Wish me luck!
Thank you! One of our other how videos (How to repair wind damage shingles) shows you step by step how to repair shingles such as patch jobs. Put the two videos together and you should be able to do most roof repairs. Again, thank you for the support!
Thank you and remember, if you have any questions we are always here to help. We also have another How-To video in the making, we should have it done by the weekend. Good luck!
I'm about to start working on repairing part of my roof. And this helped me understand the process for removing and assessing the plywood below. Thanks for the video!
Excellent. No nonsense. I generally end up trolling the roofing youtubers. I would have taken that plywood back down and shave it a bit with circ saw so it wasn't a tight fit, you always need 1/8" gaps around plywood. good video.
This was helpful. I would have liked to know how you determined the thickness of the plywood and how to re lay more felt and weave in shingles. Tube roof caulking applied ?
Got it, thank you for your feedback its greatly appreciated! There is actually a video in the making now where you can see the full repair plywood, felt, shingles and vent install. It should be ready for viewing within the next few days.
I have a small channel it's a music channel.. In 1962 my aunt got me a ukulele.. always learning to play another instrument..steel guitar wasn't my forte. Anyways..I do a little woodworking. I have learned a little of this and that. Some come in handy. I started about 5 years ago making children's chairs and tables. I am amazed how often I use little tricks I've learned years ago..some as far back as my early teens. Thank for your help. I am presently trying to stop some water intrusion of water under the flashing.
Great video, very thorough. One suggestion, you mention the direction of board being laid in respect to the studs. It may seem obvious, but telling them why (ie, wood grain direction) may be helpful.
Ya this is good, you're helping us DIYer's out. The way it's laid out like lesson is really helpful. The only thing I can think to suggest is like a "table of contents" or summary slide at the beginning like a list of steps, some people find that helpful for learning.
Thank you for your suggestion. Do you think the time stamped steps in the description isn't enough? We will take any advise we can get. Thanks in advance!
Wife and I was qouted over 2000.00 to repair our roof I watched your video and I was able to do it myself for over 1400.00 less very helpful video thank you!
The video was really great and it helped me to understand what I needed to know. I will let you know how it goes and thank you for making it simple enough to understand.
Thank you for your help. I have a hole over my oven hood in the roof and that is where all the water is entering the house plus we just moved in less than a year ago and we are seeing a lot of things that need to fix or redone.
Very well done video! By speeding up the action and adding the narrative later, you taught in about 10 minutes what many videos would have taken 30 minutes to teach.
I think it was a good video. I have done many roofs over my lifetime but this time this roof was covered by the original roofers withe the tar paper and holes were never repaired I was going to install the shingles and fell through the roof
r video helpful as I am in middle of diy rotten roof decking replacement in multiple areas of my pitched roof especially those areas around several PVC pipes. Previous builders contractor left 4 sq. in. hole in 1/2 in CDX decking around several PVC pipes...I'm for leaving no room in plywood decking around PVC pipe for water to get in...close gap entirely so if shingles fail water will not pour in during flash flood which occurs way too frequent at my house. I work from attic and roof top to avoid further damaging already damaged ridges using drill and jigsaw.
Hiring an electrician to temporarily remove the mast while you install the plywood (which could be pricey) is the only way to have 1 soild piece of plywood and not having to piece the plywood together. The next best thing to do is to cut a U shape in the plywood, wrap it around the pole then use a metal sheet to fill in the plywood gap. Use the sheet of metal as a plywood bandage. Obviously nails won't hold if nailed into the metal so install your nails around the U hole. The pole should be 2" diameter. Cut out 1 two foot long U 2"wide. Hope this makes sense.
Thank you for the video, good job. One thing that would have helped me is to know why your repair plywood is so large with respect to the damage area. You went above the vent pipe and spanned three rafters, where as the hole was below the vent and just between two rafters. I'm sure your way is correct, but as a non pro I don't know why the repair was so large. Also, when you said "this area" I don't know what part of the country you are in, so the state name would have helped me understand the context of your comment.
Hi Jack, thank you for your comment it's very much appreciated. The reason why I jumped to the next rafter and above the pipe is because it's very difficult to see in the video but the water damage expanded past the first rafter and a bit over the pipe (just by a few inches). It might of been fine not to jump that far over but for instructional purposes I wanted to makesure our viewers learn how to do things the right way rather then a half step repair. #Pflugerville,Texas #CentralTexas

Most plywood decking is at or around 1/2 inch.
Remember to install the plywood in the proper direction (perpendicular to the rafters).

Anyone knows why the metal or plastic caps are used instead of regular galvanized nails? Excellent vid on the details and what to watch out for!
Tin/metal caps are used to hold the underlayment from blowing off with high winds. Their heads are wider than nails which help them cover more area.
