Skull and Bones is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Singapore and published by Ubisoft. The game is set to be released in February 2024 for Amazon Luna, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A version for Google Stadia was planned before the service's shutdown. The game revolves around piracy and naval warfare with a fantastical setting during the late 17th century, the peak of the historical Golden Age of Piracy. As of 2017, Skull and Bones was marketed as a tactical action game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Players take control of a customizable pirate ship, and may choose to sail the Indian Ocean by themselves and set off on a single-player campaign, or gather up to five other players to ally in player versus player gameplay in Disputed Waters.
Wind positioning can be assessed to gain an advantage in battle. Players may collect additional ships throughout the game, such as sloops-of-war, frigates and brigantines, whose weapons include mortars, broadside cannons, and rockets. Ships can be charged into with brute force and boarded. The rate of inflicted damage is gauged by the health bar. A core component is the multiplayer mode Loot Hunt, where two groups of players are challenged in treasure hunting to further accumulate their riches. Each given ship's crow's nest is scalable for use as a lookout point, and spyglasses will be available. Microtransactions will be included.

i legit fell asleep while watching this gameplay, i don't think it's worth $60, it plays like a free to play early access game from what i have seen before i fell asleep and that resource thing was dumb, that to me felt like they were trying to make this a mobile game.
man if i'm a pirate you would think we would be able to build our own empire have our own island and operate by our own laws and rules, and there would be actual combat outside the ship battles, why did this game take a fucking decade to create?
i have it on my computer so far i am only 5 mins into at the island where you repair the ship but seems kinda generic

Ubisoft never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
I think a lot of people in this comment section (you included) don't understand that not all video games are made to please adults...

The fact that there’s no hand to hand close combat in a game about pirates is crazy to me.
Agreed. Tone deaf.
And the gathering is some stupid mini-game... really?
lazy af
in a game about pirates made by ubisoft, no less. imagine you get boarded and engage in for honor combat lmao.
Taking that off the table almost makes me wonder if anyone at Ubisoft knows what a pirate is
After playing the beta all evening with some friends, there isn’t a single thing skull and bones attempts to do that sea of thieves doesn’t do better.
Its not cartoonish which a lot of people HATE
@@ChrisRedheart if people really fall over that they better leave xD
@@ChrisRedheart A lot of people have shallow, ignorant takes. This isnt new
@@ChrisRedheart Not catoonish... but with a poor gameplay. Sea of thieves is clearly better.
Sea of Thieves you don't have any AI Crew though. The game is locked to first person and the stylized art style could be a "turn on" or a turnoff for people especially in the pirate genre where pirates aren't really originally portrayed to be fun, playful and cartoonish more so gritty, violent and realistic. These things can always be a plus to some people or even many people but it doesn't mean everyone will like Sea of Thieves better. Personally love everything about the pirate genre but have zero interest in Sea of Thieves, but would love to play Skull and Bones every once and a while for a little mindless pirating fun
Looks like it will be fun for an hour. Just like every Ubi game lately.
everything that came out in the last 10 years by Ubisoft is trash except for the Anno series
Meh, the new prince of persia was pretty good:)
This game was almost impossible to mess up, all it had to be was black flag but multiplayer. Only Ubisoft could miss the mark with this. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that a the creators of black flag, sat in a room and decided to make this mobile version of their 10 year old game
Ubisoft has lost the plot many years ago. They have over 3000 employees nowadays. Money is all they think about, none of the people in charge play games anymore if they ever have. They drive S class Merc's and think of players as consumers who buy products, not games. Its obvious Yves has lost any passion he ever had a long time ago, now he just tries to steer this behemoth of a company Ubisoft has bloated into
As I recall, the project would have and should have been abandoned years ago, but they have no choice but to get something to release because they have a contractual obligation with the government of Singapore.
It's even more funny when you realize THIS IS UBISOFT, company famous for using the same mechanics all over again in their games. But here they just said fuck it and abandoned all the mechanics that made AC Black Flag fun and gave us this mobile style crap.
A For Honor like game with ships instead of warriors was probably what they originally had in mind. Then they released a first trailer and people overwhelmed them with questions and demands:"will it be open world?", "will we be able to leave the ship?" etc. So they became scared and that's when they started to lose focus, trying to do everything all at once.
Right? Can’t believe they didn’t just release a game they already made….
"it's not black flag 2, it's world of tanks with pirate ships" that's all i needed to know. thanks ubisoft... how did you fuck this up?
Well them being Ubisoft is one reason 😅
I have been in closed betas for over two years. They have changed so little.
I have been very vocal about my issues and yet they conit. I just wanted a black flag light rpg with historical accuracy.
I am in this Beta, but I am not happy.
To be fair they were clear about that from the beginning . it's the people against the idea that kept disbelieving they would go that way . Don't get me wrong i have zero interest in a "world of pirate ships" , especially without any kind of actual melee takover battle on the ships .. but it is what it is
@@dogsbark5750Well what do you expect, the project was supposed to be cancelled years ago but they have to push it out because they have a contractual obligation to the Singapore government. One of my friends who works in the Singapore gaming industry told me that he saw the director of Skull and Bones walking around the street with a noose around his neck, I think that tells you all you need to know about this game.
Doesn't seem that way at all, a wot with sailing. That's world of warships.
To me this seem more like a coop/pve focused mmo, which is not that bad as long there is no instancing and all players are on same regional server, if the economy and player communication and off battle interaction are good, if there is enough customization and crafting to farm for and sell and trade, to have sense for guilds and some type of grand influence based gameplay for those guild to play for, even if it's through pve events.
No premium stuff at all, no game shop. Or if that's a thing then it must be free and properly balanced to make it worth it for free players, to not feel ignored or punished for not spending, so no scummy marketing tricks to manipulate people in to buying pixels.
Also would be cool to add up in time more, to not be all only cannon combat but also have a more stealthy/avoiding combat to fulfil missions, to be a smuggler type. Or grappling focused approach on combat so that instead of firepower and armor maybe build your ship with crew size and speed in mind.
10 years is all it took to achieve this masterpiece? Nicely done Ubisoft..
All they had to do just make online Black Flag with ship customization. How FKING HARD it can be.
@@hannibalburgers477literally odyssey with no hand to hand combat.
Black flag is one of my all-time favorites due to the seamless transition from captaining your ship to jump ashore or boarding enemies.
No other pirate game that generation did that with such polish.
Without that, this game has removed that soul. The Jack Daw was a main character alongside Edward. Playing and switching between both was so fun.
Being locked to your helm while in combat or exploring kills the sense of openness and exploration that SOT or BF cultivate.
I'll try Skull and Bones in a few years. Maybe they can turn it into something more my style.
"theres no hand to hand close combat" is an instant no interest anymore kind of thing for me.
Yeah I hope it has ranged hand to hand combat at least

I love pirate based stories! I was really, *really* hoping skull and bones would be GTA V or Skyrim but with pirates. Open world, my actions have consequences, I could choose to stay on land and have a shop, or sail on a ship, etc. I want to break out of prison and do actual pirate stuff 😅

Yes like Red Dead Redemption 2 except on the ocean with pirate ships instead of horses and being pirates instead of cowboys and have a bunch of islands you could visit and explore and rob people at sword point and get sent to the gallows only to escape at the last minute and do crazy pirate adventures. That is the kind of game we all want.
You logic is faulty. Ubisoft cannot even make a game that come close to GTA V or (somehow) Skyrim
It is amazing how they saw all the backlash about no hand to hand combat, no walking around Islands or exploration, and yet they continued to make zero changes. I would love a good pirate game but you can tell right away this game was designed as an arcadey highly monetised attempt at a cash grab.
Seems just like a vast downgrade compared to Black Flag. It's also going to be made quickly redundant by Ubi remastering Black Flag soon anyway.

Yeah they should launch it for early access in february and build foot combat on top as they adapt to feedback over the next couple years like Larian did. Too late now. Oh well.

To win me over is they have a mode where you can attack a fortress like in black flag. You get to the fortress by attacking ships then you select it and leave the open world and your group gets off and fights with swords and guns.
I played the full 6 hours and enjoyed it but there was a lot of back and forth to the main base(I just wanted to desperately shoot ships). The plunder thing was cool with 2 mates, where you got heaps of resources and were attacked on all sides and from towers. There were world events too but never cracked into one of them
You are smart i really like how you talked about details and everything i will come to you before i buy any game

Also, I eventually got a healing ship, one mate stayed with a damage ship and other mate got a raming ship. It was fun but you are right, it feels like half a game, it feels like it needs a fighting on land component. We also fought a level 10 mega ship while we were lvl 3,4 and 5. It destroyed us.
This is like making a gta game where you can only race cars and nothing else

This right here is probably spot on. And it’ll be like 3 months after release too. Rushed, buggy, and not fluid.
They had many revamp and reboot of the game to do so ... i'm betting it won't even do that , and just straight go f2p when it crashes and burns , to recoup some funds
After many videos, finally I found your video presenting both the positive side and the negative side of the game. Ty man!
I think a good way to think about this game, is World of Warships set in the 1700s with more fast paced, intimate combat, and the ability to step off your boat and walk around at port.
The no hand to hand is such a deal breaker for me and a lot of people.
People want hand to hand combat and island exploration, on top of pirating... That's assassin's creed, I think they didn't want to remake black flag and make this unique in its own way.
So Sea of Theives is Black Flag? Thats just stupid @amokana
Hand to hand combat is essential in anything pirate, let alone a game.
@firepower987my guy, the original release was 2018. If they were going to by now, they would have. They have no interest in making this what we want
@@amokanaExcept it's not unique in its own way, it's just a worse version of AC4 and AC Rogue.

Yes indeed for the amount of time this has been in development i was hoping for AC Black Flag 2 without the AC stuff. That said, i had a great time in the beta but the most fun was grouping up with other player ships. Being able to fill a tank, healer, or dps role in a group seems interesting to me, I’m just not sure how long the current gameplay loop will keep me engaged. Was really hoping for hand to hand combat and exploration on land.

That superman metaphor was super on point, would hate that 🤣🤣
I think the lack of melee combat is a very ... interesting choice.. I think if it had some id be more interested in playing it.
I would even be fine with them cutting out the humans-doing-stuff bits if they wanted to focus on a borderline mobile/arcade quality naval combat setup where you're basically just the boat. But nah, they gotta throw in the actual pirates, then completely half ass that angle, just to blue ball people.
so it's basically World of Warships if that was in the 17th century
Collecting wood and iron from sunken ships is literally how you get those resources in AC Odyssey.
There's so much you could do with a concept like this.
I was hoping for the bracing mechanic being expanded on, managing crew health by bracing before ramming other ships - if you don't they take a small amount of damage so that when you board for hand to hand combat your crew has more health, also you could have crew work slower for a few seconds like taking more time to reload canons and stuff.
Or following treasure maps only to learn that someone else is looking for the same treasure so essentially you could try to fight them at sea or race them to the loot taking your ships party ashore to fight them on the ground, or they could try to ambush you after you find the treasure and you're returning to the ship - then you can raid their ship when it's on l land for extra loot or if it's a larger ship potentially some crew stay behind to guard both their ship alongside your unoccupied ship or they're fighting crew you left behind

It’s crazy that you feel and play more like a pirate in an almost 10 year old AC game than this game which is mainly about pirates. Even crazier is it’s from the same company. They could have literally just taken out the AC part from black flag and it would still be better than this. Is it really that difficult to build on something that already worked ? and what's even crazier??? THIS TAKES PLACE DURING BLACK FLAG'S TIMEFRAME

the collecting resources thing: would've been so cool if you destroyed a ship and you could cast a net over a chunk of the ship to turn into resources at a dock. if they had better canons, you could learn a blueprint for em or smth. yano... an interesting pirate way of resource collection
The one thing would be that all the textures, load screen cinematics and physics for hair and clothing were dialed back to an earlier build.
I got to try it out as well this weekend. While initial fun was there, i felt like it soon fell of as i started to realize that all missions are just fetch quests basically. Go sink a ship, come back. Go plunder a outpost, come back. Go transport some cargo, come back. There isn't really any meat to them or variety. Every type of the mission is the same thing. Also due to the fact that we only got to play for six hours (idk who's stupid idea that was) we didn't really get an opportunity to try out different ship types or classes because of the time required to get them. I was only able to test out the initial DPS ramming ship you get and the support type ship, both of which are in small category of ships. Got to say though, they much improved on ship customization and now changing ship armor actually changes the look of the ship and is not just some plating thrown on it like it previously was so that's great. As far as pirate game goes, i wasn't really feeling the pirate vibe TBH since a large portion about what pirates were (swashbuckling, sword fighting and pistol shooting) is actually not in this game, its just the naval combat part. On that point, naval combat feels very easy and it very arcade type of combat, you just get a crosshair you have to aim at enemy ship and you are done. There is no calculating of say arc of canon fire, wind doesn't really affect it much, its all very easy to master, no actual skill required really. It is a very casual game in pretty much every aspect. If you want a real challenge you won't find it here, unless you try to solo everything which is not a intended way to play. Game looks good and ran well on my PC on highest settings, at least world looks good. Character models on the other hand look horrible in comparison, like something 10 years ago or more. That's really how the whole game feels, like it's 10 years behind times
There's a stamina bar to accelerate your ship, something that wasn't present in Black Flag and honestly is something that's detrimental to the fun of the game.
In Black Flag, when nothing is going on, you'd raise your sails so your ship goes quicker to the next battle/point of interest and then lower them when engaging another ship or to stop near land. Then, you'd use your stamina to ram ships.
In Skull&Bones, you can raise your sails only if you have stamina which will continuously deplete until your sails magically lower themselves, artificially extending your playtime for no reason.
That simple feature only makes me ask why people would play this over Sea of Thieves, especially when SoT released with the realistic mechanic of wind currents 5 years ago.
Wait there’s no actual sailing here???
Stamina for a ship 😂

I had so much fun in Black Flag just sailing around, immobolizing ships then boarding them to fight the crew. Not being able to do that in this game is a huge letdown. The sea hunts and diving sections were great in Black Flag too, and so far I've just been able to do basic spearing of fish and sharks. Nowhere near as well done previously.
Calling it right now, no hand to hand combat will make this game dead on arrival
Yeah, a pirate game without melee combat is like a Batman game without gliding. It’s a baffling design choice
Honestly surprised they are still going to release this
Who thought that fading to black and then teleporting to shore was a better idea then seamlessly pulling up to shore and getting off the boat?
I dont like how so many original games end up missing the mark. We need a quality AAA completely original game to come out.
When Edward Kenway wants to play Sea Of Thieves
Hey @LukeStephensTV,
Love your videos, I always enjoy watching them! I was wondering what Mousepad you have since I really like its size and look.
For me, I think most people just thought it would be the mechanics from Black Flag, not the actual content...they really seem to have tried to make it more like other pirate games out right now and that's such a shame, because the at sea mechanics were perfectly fine, they really only needed a huge map with a greater variety of ships. They tried to copy AND re-invent the wheel at the same time...also I imagine the MT's in this will be ludicrous.
so they stripped out everything we liked about black flag, they missed sword fighting, treasure hunting, island exploration and much more.
"It's like a superman game but you play as Clark Kent getting coffee"
... or a Spiderman game but you play as Peter riding a bike with Harry Osborn
Oh wait we actually had that
If insomniac made a Superman game they definitely would do that 😂
Or a gta game where you do a heist but you can only play as the get away car
Except thats a narrative point in the spider man and not the only gameplay. Make your analogy make sense.
@@x0Fang0xthe difference between this and Spider Man is that this is actually a game, unfortunately
Spider Man is a $60 movie that outstays its welcome
@@x0Fang0x Spiderman 2 sucks that bad it makes Skull and Bones look appealing, not, but you know what I mean. hahahahahaha Wokie games, what a world we live in, fang2828 is the soyest of soy.
I played it too. Honestly wasn't as bad as expected... Quite enjoyed it actually. I tried not comparing it to a single player game and found the game pretty okay
I liked everything except the big boat battles. I like the tiny islands, I like the small boat, the two button controls, and the sharks. I’m almost at the getting a big ship part but I don’t want to bc I hated the tutorial. Most of that is that I didn’t realize it was unwinnable. Maybe if they had health bars I would’ve realized and put the controller down. Like souls.
Question:
Considering the graphics are pretty much the same, what do I get from *Skull & Bones* that I can't get from the naval part of *Assassin's Creed: Odyssey* ?
the multiplayer that you never wanted lol
My sentiments exactly. Everything I saw in this video I feel like you can pretty much do in Odyssey already… Except it’s worse because you can’t do everything else Odyssey offers. This just feels like a waste of a game man.
And this on the heels of The Day Before...
This is the best part of black flag with a new coat of paint with all ground exploration taken out along with hand to hand combat gone!
This actually makes me want to just go back and play Black Flag
I remember when this and Sea of Thieves were the two pirate games coming out around the same-ish time/year 😂😂
😂😂
I hated how even minor tutorial missions were designed for group play. Id try to board a ship to complete the mission but as soon as id stsrt fighting tons of enemies would spawn and just wrek me.
The crew member in the crows nest must have some super strength grip hanging during those storms and waves💀
So it's basically Assassin's Creed Pirates, that old mobile spin-off game from 7-8 years ago.
After findling out they plan to have battelpasses they lost me.
I remember playing either the alpha or one of the very early betas, and I didn't even get through the first mission because I was so bored. I got access to this beta, and I got through the first few mission and then got bored and didn't wanna play
I’m hopeful and we have to see some more gameplay before I make a purchase or not.
at first i thought it was going to be more like sea of theaves, but seeing it now, i think its just a bunch of minigames thrown into one. I wouldnt mind them adding some hand to hand combat, and letting us get out of our ship to gather materials.
Honestly, the lack of hand to hand combat is what kills it for me. What's the point of boarding another ship if it's just some quick animation that plays? I'd see the animation probably 10 times before I got tired of it. It removes any variety those encounters could have had.
Ubi is LAZY 😴
I think everyone just wanted a pirate rpg? Idk how ubisoft didn't get the messaging?
what it needs is something to play twoards. like from what we have seen you gather stuff for your ship, then more stuff for your next ship, and so one, this cant be all.
Fundamental ship design would be fantastic. To design your own pirate ship including customization such as the masthead, cabins and sails.
Feels like a free to play world of warships game sold as a AAA game 60$...
Starting with a bigger ship makes sense: the game wants players to experience how is will be later. Many games use this trick for the critical first 5 minutes of gameplay.
The game does look interesting. I think it would be fun to do some kind of swashbuckling when you try to read ships and it does make sense to start off with a mini game because you start with bare bones ship basically but I do see your point I think it would be more fun to battle cargo ships to get the loot you are a pirate after all so they need to equip your ship with a decent gun and just go to town and also because you have done this they may actually change some things it was in demo they might even remove the mini game who knows But thank you for the video. You do an excellent job
