I flew in one as a cadet for about 3 hours in the late '90s. We were operating out of Leuchars and it was my consolation prize for having grown too tall for the Jet Provost. We dropped off two NCOs at Army HQ in downtown Edinburgh and then spent the better part of 2 hours flying around the SE coast of Scotland on training manoeuvres, including numerous autorotations and combat landings on the moors. I got the impression it was the final checkride for the student pilot. The first autorotation was a surprise. The instructor just reached up and flipped the kill switch and then looked back at me to see my reaction. I just had a big grin on my face because I knew I was in for a fun ride. Some of the world's best selling civil helicopters are derivatives of the Gazelle.
I had a flight in one 35 years ago as a cadet and it was the best thrill-ride I've experienced to this day, and I seek out thrill rides. Awesome machine.
as an American this was the aircraft that inspired my interest into helicopter aviation soon after watching the scifi action movie 'Blue Thunder' - (1983) in the theater during my childhood.
Knew a guy who got shot down in one of these during the falklands war, they had ditched into the ocean and were able to deploy a life raft only to be shot up badly by the Argentines. He said the only thing he was upset about was the loss of such a lovely aircraft! So yeah, for all the service they done they only get 2 min rushed video. Hmm
@@lachlanchester8142 theres plenty of documentaries about trannies, lgbtq, multicolor rainbows also...but Forces still gives more time to that than this. Thats why its annoying.Ok.
There is no replacement. The MoD had ordered 30 Airbus H135s as a replacement, but then the government decided to cancel the order and mothball the five helicopters that had already been delivered. Their rationale was that "the improved security situation in Northern Ireland has made their procurement redundant and therefore no longer necessary."
Part of the soundtrack of my childhood, as a boy in Belfast in the 70's and 80's. At night you'd be in bed and frequently one of these and its distinctive buzzy drone would be up above as an eye in the sky, keeping everybody awake..lol. Didn't realise they were still flying them up to today. But once, at a very difficult time, this wee workhorse helped keep us, their comrades on the ground and the RUC safe from terrorists. Lest we forget.
The Gazelle one of the most beautiful and reliable machine was ground breaking more then 50 years ago in the light support aviation, why European countries and Britain dont send some of the latest versions of the Gazelle armed with the HOT 3 missiles flying at the top of the trees very low engaging enemies positions and armour, high value targets from 4 to 5 km they will not even see this bird, armed with Hot 3 and the Pars 3 , Gazelle, lynx AH -7 and Bo 105 i think that will make a diference in the Battlefield agaisnt russian troops, those are helicopters reaching the end of their service but are still effective better then soviet light aviation and low cost to operatee, why Europe doesnt supply 50 or 60 armed scouts from Germany Bo 105 , French Gazelle and British Lynx AH 7 armed with the HOT 3 missiles and TOW will give a great edge to Ukraine they need weapons that are easy to operate, quantaties already avaible and low maintance its really a great package
@@timfronimos459 The wildcat is able to fulfil the role of the Gazelle easily. Not everything requires a replacement, especially when there is already a much more versatile option available.
Such an easy aircraft to handle on the ground as well, by hand as well as towed. It was a pleasure to have worked with them.

Loved watching the Gazelle and the Lynx back when there was a the Army Air Coup Display Team.
Had a memorable trip in one as a young air cadet in the 80s down the coast a bit and back. Great experience.
Similar. The pilot was NUTS.

Gazelle (floppy) was always regarded as a go-kart, Lynx a Formula 1 car, and the commando (Mk 4) Sea King a bus :-)
It just looks right. The step up from Scout to Gazelle was massive.
Always loved the engine signature…
I have fantastic memories of hedge hopping at full speed in a Gazelle. No feeling like it.😁👍
This was a tremendous helicopter, that was good at whatever you through at it. But, life goes on.
And the replacement was grounded before it ever got in to proper service, good job mod as always
Summer camp at raf shawbury 1997 I flew low level tactical formation in the gazelle it was awesome
50 Years service and you only give it a 2 minute video. Come on Forces News you can do better than this.
They would rather give 30 mins to LQBTQ,muticolor, rainbows.

Will still fly at the French ALAT for a while for special ops, similar to the US scoot MD500
Did eagle patrols in these babies in South Armagh in 76...great aircraft..flying well low to the deck...
I was lucky to have a ride in one in Germany love it
More common at Suffield than Canadian Hueys
Love this helicopter, I was lucky to go up in one in 1984 with Blades Helicopters from Goodwood. Love the sound.
It'll be strange not hearing these every day, but looking forward to seeing what the replacement will be...

I've always loved the sound of the whistling fenestron its a real shame to see these go
Used to fly past my house in bessbrook every day
I don’t think Gazelle served Hong Kong - During the days of AAC 660 Sqn, it was all Scout?
The retired Gazelles and Lynx ought to be going to Ukraine if HMG has any sense.

How many hours in Ulster ? Many many many.

Gives a sad feeling, like that of the BO105 Flyout…
… but I expect the Gazelle will keep flying elsewhere, like the BO105

Lynx was faster.
less maneuverable
Wasn't the Lynx the only one that could do a full vertical loop.

I worked for a Mil contractor who employed ex RAF and Army ac helicopter pilots and they (to a man) all took the pi55 out of Gazelle pilots.
