Fastest way to do 2008 Scion XD 1.8 water pump is this. Put a jack under the oil pan , remove the passenger side motor mount and place it aside , before you do that remove the serpentine belt and loosen the adjustment on the alternator is it will slide toward the front of the car . Leave the front bumper on lol , jack up the engine enough to remove the motor mount, then slowly lower the engine, you will have to remove the passenger side tire and little plastic inspection cover, when you lower the engine a bit you can gain easy accesss to the water pump, remove the bolts, clean the surface, install the new pump , raise the engine, put the motor mount back in, lower the engine and fasten all bolts properly to the engine and mount, before you jakc the engine up put the serpentine belt back on , tension it properly, fill with coolant and you are pretty much done.

My wife's pump went out and we were quoted $1500 for the repair. Your video gave me the edge and I got it done in about 3 hours! Thanks a ton! I owe you a pizza!

My 2009 Scion xD water pump blew at 46,000 miles. The belt also shredded off. Got parts for $120 but doing it now. Thanks for your video!

I just did a 2008 XD also. I removed the under car plastic shield, loosened the altenator and moved it back. Also, the top motor mount was removed and the motor lowered enough to clear the pump snout. . Remove pump bolts from top and bottom, not easy but doable. This is the important part. ORDER AN AISEN BRAND PUMP< NO EXCEPTIONS. The others are junk. Mine lasted 5000 miles before I did it again. Aisen is a Toyota brand and has a beefier housing and better bearings. Hope this helps.

Was the first replacement you did a beefier pump?
Mine was beefier and that was the reason I had to remove the motor mount.

The first replacement was a cheap sheet metal base, but the 2nd was cast aluminum. That calls for the motor mount removal and engine lowering. The first failure(85000) caught me out in Bumf@#K, Pa. Stranded, we found a garage and they repaired it. First quote by service writer.....$1100. His labor program called for engine removal and 10 hours labor. I insisted on seeing the job and mechanic and we figured it out at 1.5hrs. Got away with a pump, new juice and belt for $400. I was thankful to get back on the road to Ct. 4000 miles later, it failed. Bones

How do you remove engine mount? Do you remove all 6 bolts at the top? I could not upload a snapshot.

Do you have the same water pump with that open front pulley? I also have xd and lm concern about water pump issue.

Why would you disassemble your car to change a water pump? I have this car and none of this was necessary.

Sean0526a you either haven’t changed your water pump or you did not get the heavy duty water pump with the thicker casting. 🤙🏼

Did the swap out over the weekend. Thanks for the vid, and thanks to scionlife forums for showing me the way! Took me a few hours, some choice 4-letter words, and a bruised knuckle or two, but I got it done and saved myself quite a bit of cash!

My 2011 XD pump seems OK my problem is it runs 200° with a 180 thermostat
I think the radiator is fine even squirting the radiator with cold water it still stays around 195 200. Do you know what temperature is Runs I’m using a scan gauge

I had 102,000. I guess there was some manufacturer recall. I figured I just do it myself because it's been so long. I actually had to lower the motor down on one side just to get the new one in. The new one is a little more heavy duty

Hello, I have Scion xD 2010. while changing the water pump, after removing all 5 bolts I could not get it out. I would try to lower the engine. How do you support the engine when you lower it down? Do you remove three bolts at the top or just one to lower the engine? Thanks

Is a 2008 the same as a 2009 in ref to parts assembly around the area of the water pump?

The water pump on my 2009 xD just gave out at 60k. It seized up and broke the belt. I hope the mechanic can remove it like this because the factory recommendation is to remove the engine.

DANG!,, what a pain to get the water pump. How many miles did you have on your XD when that happened? I've got about 140K on mine.

    • @xStraightxEdgex21

      Went out at about 105,000

Follow up Here, my old pump made it to 240,000 miles, but still it was the radiator that went out. Having trouble getting the new one back in. Did you possibly make a video of putting the new pump in? Thanks for your time.

my wife's car has leaks and I can see coolant all over the belts and her car is 2007 with 65k miles only...WTF? Come on Toyota i thought you were supposed to be reliable? I had an evo 03 with 88k miles and no leaks whatsoever.

  • @meo68gto

DONT do this!!! the water pumps have been redesigned and are externallly much thicker so the clearance does not allow for putting the new pump back in. I will get back once I have solved the issue

You can still DIY. I removed the engine mount on the passenger side, put a jack under the engine block to prevent it dropping and so I could slowly lower it to the point of getting the new pump in. i definitely do not recommend it if you are not mechanically inclined.

70,000 miles on my xD. Had the front CV boot replaced earlier because it was leaking. Had this noise from the engine, thought it was the alternator because it didn't leak fluid, replaced that. Turns out to be the water pump, watched your vid but didn't read the comments until after I removed the old one and bought the new one. Read Michael Ortiz's reply and thought "Oh sh.." Turns out it wasn't too bad, had to drop the passenger side of the engine but got it in. Bought a '92 Toyota truck new with no problems unless self-inflicted. This Scion is not the Toyota I knew.

Today I bought the OEM Toyota water pump for my 2008 Scion xD. I had it replaced under warranty at 60K so this will be the 3rd water pump (185K). Will removing the windshield washer tankv& moving the alternator forward give me the clearance to install the new one?? If not what additional steps must I do to have a successful installation? Also which 12mm socket attachments worked best (extentions etc) to remove the 5-12mm bolts.

      @scoldschoolmusic1614 6 лет назад +1

I didn't have to remove the window washer tank. Moving the alternator forward is a must. But dropping that side of the engine is not that hard. With a jack, stabilize the engine with a block of wood on a solid part of the engine. There are (4) 17mm bolts, the bar that goes to the engine and a nut that you have to come up from the bottom with a long extension are needed to remove the engine bracket. I had my kid watch as I dropped the engine enough to get the new pump in. A 3/8 universal socket adapter was priceless. This is all from memory and mine is a 2009 if that matters, so maybe search out more videos if you need more info. Like the one poster said, they redesigned the pump so I hope I don't have to do it again. Good luck Dog.
