This reminds me when Carly Rae Jepsen came out with that fantastic pop album called Emotion, and no one purchased it. Sadly, this is another example of that to me except with just one song.
I agree with both of you but attention isn't always the best thing and sometimes the special attention these things get from a particular group (i.e. a cult following of gays) is what make them truly iconic.
