      A LOT of sellers are using "forever" postage stamps. You can buy them for less than 20 cents per stamp when buying in bulk and that mitigates the costs dramatically. But I 100% get your point. Several years ago I learned to only list cards for 25 cents or higher as it wasnt worth my time to bother with anything cheaper. I think most people listing bulk/cheap cards are trying to get the volume up enough to qualify for direct.

    As a smaller TCGplayer vendor not in the direct program, with shipping on the lower side (but not the minimum), when I come across an order with say 50/100+ cards, I simply accept that the few times that occurs per year I will have to ship in an envelope or small box with tracking to get the right rates. And in this case, yes, our situations are different. You can't compare a store(s) such as yourself whose time needs to be worth more, to mine own where I spend an hour or so once in a while sorting/listing the one box I cracked. I do make this up with the majority of orders that I can ship in a regular windowed envelope. BUT I get your point, if the vendor is complaining, then raising your shipping cost is a viable solution. No reason to complain about something that is within your control. I only wish that their shipping structure allowed for automatic realization that a certain number of cards meets a weight category and it pushed it to the next shipping level. That their system can't figure that out is probably a worthy discussion.

    • @CNA-Games
      @CNA-Games  3 месяца назад +3

      For sure, dynamic shipping costs would be great, but with everyone doing things differently, it would make for a very confusing shopping experience for buyers.

    • @heatwavetcg
      @heatwavetcg 3 месяца назад +3

      The $5 free shipping threshold is way too low. It's $50 for direct sellers. Trying to compete with direct sellers on low cost items will never be possible unless they increase that threshold or change the default filter to item price only, which isn't gonna happen.

  • @Libcath101
    @Libcath101 3 месяца назад +10

    I would be happy it TCGPlayer would set a floor for card cost to be 10 or 15 cents so it is a more level playfield.
    The difference of selling with "free shipping at $5 and shipping for a fixed shipping cost is 10x for me. I personally experimented on this. I had 3-10 sales a week when I matched the minimum shipping fee, but when I switched to "free shipping" my sales went up 10 fold (most of them do not make the minimum). The best price algorithm is skewed to the "free shipping at $5", even if the buyer does not reach the $5. I personally complained to TCGPlayer to increase the minimum from 99 cent as my cost is .82 cents per letter.
    The noobs like me don't have thousands of cards, don't buy bulk at $1 for 100 cards, auto sorting machines, or buy up collections to have more chance for bulk orders. They are trying to sell a little to get some money back from opening packs. Call it a loss leader if you sell something with no profit, as long as you make some money back in the end. At least for the hobbyist, different matter for the full time business owner like you.

    • @heatwavetcg
      @heatwavetcg 2 месяца назад

      If I turn free shipping off I get the same result - a huge reduction in orders. I tested a lot with different strategies but free shipping (even with some downsides) is a must imo if you're non-direct. To counter the loss in shipping fees I just price it into my cards. I might have 1 or 2 cards at TCG low out of an inventory of 4000. Most are about 1.5x market, but I have a script I run once or twice a day to keep my prices competitive. But yeah, you need a strategy and you need to price the loss of shipping into every single card. People will still buy from you consistently as long as you deliver a good product.

    This video is very justifying and eye opening for me. I sell on tcgplayer as a means to fund my collection, and hearing Mason have issues with the margins of sales as a business makes me feel better about similar issues as an individual. I am in no means a big seller as I average 20 sales a month max, and really do not list any big value cards (I've only listed over $10 maybe 5 times). Back in November I upped my shipping to above what tcgplayer decided to do recently and found that it worked decently for me. But I think Mason's input of not listing cards under a certain price is what will really help me in the long run. Thank you for the insight and advice! Look forward to more videos!

    Sure. You're selling MTG and higher end Pokemon. Try doing the same thing with bulk Pokemon. The costs for selling bulk Pokemon cards is no where near $.24 card.The only way to move bulk singles of Pokemon is running them near or below market and often times, Lowest Price w/o Shipping.
    As I agree with your rant, and I'm a direct seller through TCGPlayer, the reality is that the card market is being diminished by racing to the bottom and TCGPlayer favors MTG over the others. I have all of my mass price, direct systems, costs for shipping down, but IF I price my cards with a floor of $.15 or $.20, the don't sell. If I raise my shipping beyond the free over $5, they don't sell. So as for your logic, I agree. But it does not apply across the spectrum. I continuously have to sell Pokémon cards below the market and or lowest price to move them. So the shipping of 30-40 cards becomes a hassle when I can't move them any other way. The logical statement is to increase your prices, which I've seen in the same group, but that doesn't apply to Pokémon. And often times they aren't in direct and you can't charge a premium when they TCGPlayer doesn't have them.

    Yeah, I don’t know if I agree with this at all. I don’t care what other sellers want to do with their inventory, but I expect to be paid for what I do. I personally don’t sell anything under .25, and I’ve had orders of one or two hundred cards at that price, specifically the new Star Wars cards which are flying. When that order costs $5,6,7,8 to ship, I should at least have an option in my sellers portal to charge more for shipping. In those instances, everyone wins except the guys doing all the work.

      Yes. This is my situation and I’m thinking of selling on TCG as a casual seller purely as part of the hobby. I’m not in it to “make” a profit, but just to get the most of what I sell and roll into other parts of my collection. I could sell on FB or Craigslist, but it is such a hassle and buyers either low ball once you do meet or never show up. I don’t want to be a store and make it my daily job, just use it as a platform to sell things I no longer want. I just feel pressure to sell lower items at a loss or break even to get volume and feedback up, then be able to be trusted by buyers on my more expensive stuff.

    Not criticism, more open discussion and a random thought bubble. TCG mission statement says they where formed for the player to offload their extras to other players on the el cheapo...it says nothing about being the primary platform for stores to make money and or survive of the slinging singles. Not everyone has the volume to do TCG direct. Nor do they want to do TCG Direct. I wonder what the stats are for individual consumer casual sellers, versus game stores squeezing blood from a rock. If any business operation relies on the thrift market of cards for stability and or sales to cushion their margins, I think there are bigger issues that they may need to address. Also, why can not TCG not implement the same tracked pwe that Ebay did? or make smalls adjustable to quantity. Imagine if they just made it 1.22 per 8 cards, then when someone ordered 50 cards, shipping tracked in a box would be covered. The whole argument for Direct also includes sitting down and pulling a few, to a few thousand a week. RNG just showed his direct pick for a few thousand individual cards. That is more inventory than many casual basement and living room sellers can have. I get the argument from a business perspective, why businesses do not just host singles on their own site and avoid all the fees is silly to. I imagine there are arguments on both sides. My 12 year old son sells on TCG, so yup, your competition is a 12 year old boy, and he sells enough a week to buy a case of pokemon, then rips, sends the hits to be graded, and lists the junk on tcg, and sells the graded on ebay, he just rinse and repeats for two years now. Hopefully he goes to college one day. Have a great day.

Usps doesnt catch them often either. I know stores who use them also. Thats how and why alot of them dont complain much about shipping. Spend 200$ for 1k fake forevers, then you use the momey you save to buy bulk envelopes, top loaders, etc... the people doing it legit are spending close to 1k a year on shipping supplies while people cutting corners are spending half that and not getting caught.

      I've wondered about what if TCGp set a floor price for cards like you mentioned, but if that was the case you would have thousands of people selling the same card at the same floor price and the chance of your card selling is like winning a lottery or most likely the only people getting the sales is stores with a vast inventory. This is just my humble opinion.

    • @FabledAcquisitions
      @FabledAcquisitions 2 месяца назад

      @@Crocodonk I concur, however if the floor price is say 25 cents, I would imagine that you could list it higher and still be competitive with pricing. lol I'm competing with stores as is, I'm just doing at penny's, and it would be nice if we just raised the bottom price to reflect new box prices. I mean is thunder junction coming out as 135$ a box. On top of that if the stores ban together and everyone agrees not to buy sets that are garbage, we could also change how wizards make their products. Imagine just taking a set off. Wizard's can't take a money hit like that. They might have to fire another CEO ;) Id also like to find a way to force Wizards into selling direct and cut out these distributers. I bought/ sold MTG for a while. Granted the profit was to just build a personal collection. Sold on TCG player/ Facebook/ in person.
    - the cringiest thing was buyers always wanted 10-15% off low because that’s what eBay/ tcg player takes.
    Or they want a full play set at x low pricing when there’s only 1 available online. You explain it but just the 1 brain cell just can’t process. Buyers are now used too someone else’s business model as low ball leverage.
    Then you go to buy collections and they want 70% of low…
    I’m sorry my guy my time/ effort/ labor/ ect, is worth more than a 15% margin because of low ball buyers/ low ball sellers.
    Don’t bother trying to explain risk vs reward or the 1 that incurs more risk should have the most gain with labor.
    it all started with sellers giving it away like candy. So now every buyer is spoiled.
