Getting to big boy status with all the organization … can’t imagine doing this with a bin full of cards and sorting through it every time someone asked for an obscure .10¢ card 😂
As someone who bought a collection of over 250000 in essentially bulk, I appreciate seeing how you handle things. The box cost investment was crazy to begin with, and I eventually sold it to the guy I split it with because I didn't want to deal with it anymore
I feel this is the difference between stores that will thrive in the super long term is this type of setup. The sunk cost is very high yes but lots of “treasure” in bulk imo.
game stores like yours are the backbone of the community and the game. It is hard work, but I am so glad you are doing it to such a high level and degree of detail. Thank you!
Yep, I built my shops foundation on this idea. Before I opened I was running a small "shop" out of an empty room in my house. I would buy bulk collections and send them in to Troll & Toads fulfilment service. I'd make between 500-1k a month doing that. Its a fuck ton of work and you can get burnt out super quick. Now that I have a shop, I rotate who sorts each week and for how long.
I can't tell you how many 25 cent cards I've purchased over the years. Bulk rares were a staple buy when I was building my early collection. Regular decks aren't all $5+ cards. From what I've seen, over half of all deck staples are less than a dollar.
I love organizing and sorting things. That would be my dream job sorting magic cards all day. 😂 Maybe I'm insane, but to put everything where it belongs is a rewarding feeling. But I'm sure as a business owner it's a lot to manage hiring someone and training them on your system etc. It's not just sorting a personal collection, it's sorting more cards than 99% of people will ever see in their lives. Thanks for sharing this behind the scenes view with us.
I feel you on the bulk, I basically go through my bulk when it comes in and pick and choose cards after sorting but still have over 20k cards that need to be listed lol.
As someone who has worked in various card stores over the last 25 years, I really liked how informative this was. One thing I'd add in is defraying cost of bulk by making grab bags. No matter what store I've been at, grab bags have been a great source of revenue. New players loved them to help build their collection cheap. Old players treated them like $1 lottery tickets, and if they didn't "win" anything (a good rare or a random prize), they'd usually just hand all the cards back to us and we'd just put that pack back into the mix and sell it again.
yo yo! Yeti Gaming member here. LOVE THE VIDS MAN this was a fun vid to listen to and it gave perspective that some might otherwise not have ever had before hearing this. keep it up man!
Thank you for making this video. I started my collecting process last month. My bulk has gotten large. I am thinking long term and you are right about sorting cards out. Definitely tedious. I’ll definitely be doing my research of tcg player direct
When the card scanner finds a really good card does an alarm go off? I just imagine it saying something like “big hit alert!” Nice video and thank you for the behind the scenes. I have around 10k common/rare/reverse holo Pokémon and have no idea what to do with it
Just started getting into collecting and watching to better my know. One thing that's impressed so much is the realness of some of content creators I've seen, so refreshing.
I worked at a Pokemon bulk buyer, we sorted out the cards from common, uncommon, rare, energy and other. They sold them in bulk 10 5 rows on a pallet. Made tons of money.
Just subbed to kings channel! Been thinking about getting into bulk but wasn’t sure how to go about it! Loved the video! Also wanted to say my girlfriend and I were driving back from Nashville and stopped by the store on our way back to Chicago! Was so much fun seeing the store in person and your staff were all amazing! We even took a picture outside of the store to say we’ve been there lol
I'm curious if you've considered utilizing distributed inventory with a Warehouse Management System? Basically you could take the csv your ROCA sorter emails you and establish Bins and Zones for each tray. You wouldn't need to file all your Oath of the Gatewatch together so you'd save your employees' manual sorting hours. But you might need to scale your operation more for this to be worth it to you.
as I have begun to fill in my collection for a card game, I always try to make sure to buy at least 1 more costly card, or keep my purchase above a certain price cause I know a business prolly doesn't enjoy shipping 20+ cards worth 5-15 cents a piece.
My local card store, will run a sale every quarter, in order to get rid of their bulk. During those sales, you can get 15-20 commons, or 8-12 uncommon for $1
Thank you for shouting out TCG Bulk Kings! Im learning a lot from his methods on selling bulk and Im of the opinion of any hobby to let your hobby pay for itself!
In the past I've found some expensive yugioh card in the bulk like 1st edition bls ioc, ash blossom secret rare, and 1st edition mrd black skull dragon. Sometimes you never know what you will find in the bulk. Some card shop will let you search thru the bulk with their permission.
Damn Mason, you’re making me second guess my entire business-model 😢 Haha I’ve joked about this before; but, in all honesty it’s probably not too far off the truth… I’d probably make more money flipping burgers at McDonalds if I ever went and tried to calculate my hourly wage; but, for me, I truly enjoy having a “large” (small in comparison) Inventory and grinding away on those $1-$10 Orders! TCGPlayer has been a game-changer for me and I look forward to expanding my Bulk Business!
Love the video! Super interesting hearing the behind the scenes stuff. I sell on a very small scale on ebay and I’ve been contemplating what to do with my bulk. After watching this I’ll probably just leave it to the pros such as yourself lol keep grinding brother!
I know the pain, I mainly deal in yugioh and bulk was my life for a long time. I dont sort all of it but just pull everything worth pulling and list them. A 7k can take up to 2 hours depending on what is in there.
$10 per thousand is actually fair; my lgs used to give $7 and now it $3 per thousand and you cant have lands in there at all. Thats some impressive backstock too. Id think of it like paying yourself to then make more money later. If you dont know your bulk then your missing out on multiple dollar uncommons and even edh or pauper staples.
wow never saw that roca thing before. insane technology, takes me back to having my tiny LGS and sorting thru bulk I "inherited" by hand. pauper and commander players came in and I had an amazing month and a half, and then what was left was just truly worthless stuff haha I often wonder if it'd be worth it to go over it again and put it up online.
That’s so cool you are in Kentucky! This fall I will be starting college at Transylvania University in Lexington! (I am from Maryland so that’s cool to know an Awesome game store is near by!)
I live by your store. I should apply. I'm obsessed with sorting magic cards, and cataloging the collection online. I have always wished I could do it for a job, but didn't know how to get into it. Sorting is so fun to me!
Tyvm 4 this video, very informative! But thank you &your staff for even doing this. Singles are the way, ill check out your online store, man if i lived near you i would love to work sort!
0.O Looks like you have the spirit! Thanks so much for the shout out! I'm really impressed with your set up, especially those shelves. Needing to get into a bigger space soon, so I'll be looking to get some shelves like that. Here my brain is telling me to tell you that if your 5-rows are full, each shelf unit has ~125k in it, so 8 is ~1M cards. Let me know if there's any way I can help you out, let me know, for sure, and thanks again!
i work at an lgs. neon dynasty was a very tedious thing to do because as a store we have to sort not only by number if there are different variants, but by color and alphabetical order and there were in total 512 cards in neon dynasty with most cards having 4 different variants. having to sort all that was hard and tedious and i do sorting and all that for all of the sets ever since i’ve worked there along with pulling lists and online orders. sometimes i spend a week with only getting barley two sets fully sorted just because it’s very tedious
I’m a chef by trade and we waste absolutely nothing if we can help it. Bones are turned into stock that’s turned into gravy all of which takes man hours too but The concept keeps places open. This is almost the same thing. Fascinating to see.
I have 30,000 bulk pokemon cards sitting right beside me as i watch this video (only sorted by rarity) and i have been wanting to trade for sealed product or something like that but not real sure where i should send it so the pile just keeps growing everyday lol
My local gamestore messed up. I just bought 1600 of Common/Uncommon for $19.99, I haven't made it through 1/3 of the box, my secondary market cards are already $93+. I had to look to see if this is normal; apparently not.
I helped a guy under the table with his TCG Player sorting that he did from home, but nothing to this scale. I would LOVE if my store (when we finally are in a spot to open it) could get to that level, and I've spent those hours hand sorting. Helping him and seeing the results of those TCG Direct orders made it feel a lot better
You can absolutely make money through flipping bulk, but your going to have a much better time sorting it yourself and selling it in person. Doing it online is still technically profitable as 200 cards fit perfectly in a 5x3x3 cardboard box and that whole packaged weighs exactly 1 pound, with todays shipping rates via usps ground advantage your looking at an average shipping cost of $7. Charging the whole amount for $20 with free shipping equates to 20 cents a card which is fair for bulk. Only issue selling online is unless you’re already established you will be selling very slowly as bulk selling TCG anything is grossly over saturated on eBay.
How has the sorting machine changed things for you? We are a new store. We opened in October 2021. We have started to get more bulk than we can handle and are looking at adding this machine to our store. Did the machine increase your business enough to cover the payment?
The sorting machine is great for increasing inventory! That said, it alone does nothing to increase business. I won't speak to the cost, but it is not something that pays itself off immediately, especially given that man hours are still necessary AFTER the machine-sorting process.
When you equate it to if an employee had to do what it does, we are probably at that point. It was $17k, so it took us a while to get there. But again, if you see this being an important part of your business, the math checks out.
How do you deal with selling a card on one platform then removing it from all the other platforms? same thing when you put something in stock. How do you get it listed on all the other platforms?
This video interests me because I recently bought a large amount of Nascar Cards, guessing 7-10k or so with mainly 1999-2003 stuff all Nascar and I am struggling to organize it
Hey Mason, I really enjoy your videos. I've been a collector since the early 80's and have racked up a sizable collection over the years. I was just curious about the shelves you use to place your 5000 count boxes on in the back. I've got a lot of bulk myself and would really love to store them in a similar way. Could you please tell me who makes the shelving units or where to pick a couple up for myself? Thanks, and keep up the great content!
Rudy from Alpha Investments has the same grey shelves. They are pretty common to find at your local Costco/Sams Club. They are around $70 and to make set ups with that many shelves you have to put two together.
I’ve been wondering when someone buys a bulk box off Amazon. Those long white boxes. How are those cards chosen? Some sections of the box seems random but sometimes there will be 10 of the same card in a row like someone just grabbed a handful and stuck them in the box then went back to grabbing one here and there or 4 here and 3 there. Then 9 of the same exact card again. Mtg will have the colors pretty scattered then there’s a section of the box with 27 red cards in a row.
I make bulk lots all the time! Yeah, a lot of it is just how we get bulk traded in. It's a real pain to hand mix stuff and takes a lot of time to randomize. I still do it so people don't get a ton of the same stuff, but yeah, most people probably don't take the time.
I once, like many, wanted to run a game store. Then about 30 years ago I met the owners of my LFGS and learned what it takes. It's a lot of work and over those 30 years, there are more LFGSes where I live that died than managed to make it all that time. (3 out of the six have survived.)
Mann, I struggle keeping track of around 10K cards in total as inventory when most cards have pictures.. Those bulk boxes would give me nightmares hahaha.
Very informational! I was curious about what you do with Pokémon bulk? For example, I know my LGS buys Pokémon bulk at a pretty high rate and my understanding is that they turn around and resell that bulk to other companies. I’m not sure if you do that at your store, but if you did, could you provide more insight on that process?
The rate for Pokemon bulk is generally much higher than Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh, largely because there are big online stores buying at high rates. Within the last year some stores were paying above $.05 per card in Pokemon bulk, more than 10x the standard Magic bulk price.
Omg I already do this for myself. I sort all my pokemon cards by number and set and box, and everything get sleeved. I mine as well start selling it. Also I love the robot.
Listing on so many platforms drawing from the same inventory, how do you deal with having to refund orders if a card spikes and sells out on multiple platforms simultaneously?
I have a question as a collector. I have accumulated bulk over 6-7 years of collecting, and I have plenty of time to organize and sell the bulk creatively, instead of shipping it all off in one go for minimal profit. Can someone who’s never sold a card in their life do tcg players direct? Is that something I should even consider or would I be way in over my head?
It'll take a while before you qualify. These are the requirements: Level 4 seller 99.5% Feedback Rating over the past 30 days Direct Eligible inventory of approximately 3000 cards. 100 sales per month, averaging $600 per week.
I just recently started selling on TCGPlayer and can already tell that TCGPlayer Direct is going to be a game changer for my Bulk! Anyone can sell on TCGPlayer; however, not everyone can sell through TCGPlayer Direct. You need to have a Level 4 Seller Account on TCGPlayer which honestly doesn’t take long at-all (took me about a month); but, you also need to be selling a lot of cards in-order to qualify for Direct - they want to see you doing around $600 in Sales / Week before you can qualify for Direct. Personally, if you don’t have any selling experience whatsoever, I’d recommend starting with higher-end cards ($10+ Range) so that you can learn the ins-and-outs of selling / shipping while actually making money on each sale. Bulk can be a good business-model; but, there’s actually A LOT of science that goes into selling those types of cards! For a new seller, it can be really discouraging selling / shipping orders that your literally loosing money on just by selling! For Example, I frequently ship TCG Orders for $0.05 + $0.78 Shipping = $0.83. TCGPlayer takes $0.30 (Flat-Fee / Transaction) plus $0.08 (10% Fee). So, you go from $0.83 down to $0.45. Now, you have to ship that order and postage alone is $0.53 (Already -$0.08) without factoring-in Sleeve, Toploader, Envelope, Ink… Bulk is all about volume - you’re not focusing-on Individual Sales; but, the big picture and your overall sales over the span of a week, month, year…
I was a buyer for coolstuff for 2 years from 2017-2019. So i know what the process is for bulk and all the sorting. Their operation is unreal. Hoping everything i learned from working there, helps me when i start my store up soon
Thank you for a look into the way your store works! I'm a little concerned with some of the bulk on the ground and up against the wall however. Should the wall leak or water make its way into the shop the bottom row would be ruined.
I buy a lot of bulk, for cubes, jank decks etc etc, thanks to stores like this I can easily get what I need, sometimes I have even felt bad for placing an order for hundreds of cards thinking someone has to actually find the cards
How do you ensure your CF and TCG Player Inventory lines up? Is that just manual? You probably don't run into it often with how much you have, but I only have about 60K cards in my bulk storage at the moment and have run into where I sell my only 4 cards on one platform and miss taking them off the other. Do you just have so much this doesn't matter, do you just have reserves not listed, or is there integration to automate inventory counts....thanks again for the video and revisiting this topic, about 9 months ago I saw the first one and started a tcgplayer store dealing in bulk and now clear $1500-2500 per month and get to reinvest that into my personal collection, so thanks for the inspiration!
I wish there was a easy solution to cross post your entire inventory - unfortunately there is not at the moment. We use BinderPOS/shopify for our POS and online platform, and that links up with Channel Fireball. Everything else is manually put on ebay/tcgplayer, whichever we think would be best for it. It's not an amazing system, but it's the best that is out there right now.
Hey - those shelves are from Sams Club and Costco. Rudy from alpha investments uses them as well, they seem to be the best bang for your buck when it comes to shelves.
Surprisingly single cards are starting to sell especially digimon people are started to build decks . Probably sold 500 this week in single rares and bulk cards
This video made me wonder how to sell bulk better, even though all I do is play. There’s a LEGO store I love that has its inventory of loose pieces sorted in a similar way and that’s a chunk of their business too. Maybe there’s other small, volume-heavy business that could inspire some change to the model to make it easier
glad this showed up in my recommended
no only does your store look great, but I appreciate the "behind-the-scenes"
I appreciate it!
Getting to big boy status with all the organization … can’t imagine doing this with a bin full of cards and sorting through it every time someone asked for an obscure .10¢ card 😂

I don't believe you

This video interests me because I recently bought a large amount of Nascar Cards, guessing 7-10k or so with mainly 1999-2003 stuff all Nascar and I am struggling to organize it
Nice find. I might actually drop by the store since you are local. Awesome job.
One of my favorite videos in the Shop Confidential legacy. Dope stuff.
I give u big high five on your organization I love that idea am going to try that in my business it looks awesome !
I still do it so people don't get a ton of the same stuff, but yeah, most people probably don't take the time.
dude that card sorting machine is SICK! I had no idea something like that even existed. One day maybe ill own my own shop........
But yeh, the Japanese bulk of older sets that I sell can monthly actually pay my rent. I was super surprised that it sold so well and for so much
That Roca sorter has blown my mind
Have you looked into a Phyzbatch-9000 for sorting? It looks pretty good for bulk and collection sorting
I didn't even know card sorting machines for TCG exist.
I know right how amazing was that to see
My LGS just bulk lockers, sorted by color. 20c a card of 5 for 50c
I have about 27,000 yugioh cards and it took days to sort them and put them in binders
Omg I already do this for myself. I sort all my pokemon cards by number and set and box, and everything get sleeved. I mine as well start selling it. Also I love the robot.
What are you using as dividers at 2:36?
Listing on so many platforms drawing from the same inventory, how do you deal with having to refund orders if a card spikes and sells out on multiple platforms simultaneously?
What shelves are those? They look way better than our current storage!
These are from costco/sams club. we use ikea drawers now.
@@CNA-Games wait, ikea has drawers that fit 5k boxes?
wow had no idea about tcgplayer direct, great advice thank you! gonna ship some bulk out
I know you've probably read this a lot but this series is really good! Keep it up Mason. 💯
Thank you for saying so. I appreciate all the feed back.
Comment from homeland of TCGplayer! Love using direct when i lobe close by feel like i get my cards much quicker lol
These are the requirements:
Level 4 seller
99.5% Feedback Rating over the past 30 days
Direct Eligible inventory of approximately 3000 cards.
Now, you have to ship that order and postage alone is $0.53 (Already -$0.08) without factoring-in Sleeve, Toploader, Envelope, Ink… Bulk is all about volume - you’re not focusing-on Individual Sales; but, the big picture and your overall sales over the span of a week, month, year…
@@OldSkoolPokemon nerd 🤓 lol, spelling it out so I don't have to
I was a buyer for coolstuff for 2 years from 2017-2019. So i know what the process is for bulk and all the sorting. Their operation is unreal. Hoping everything i learned from working there, helps me when i start my store up soon
Coolstuff is no joke. I'm sure you have some stories to tell too.
@@CNA-Games yeah i have a bunch lol
I've done this kind of grind while working at two different shops. It's not fun, at all, and it really is miserable on the back.
Oh yeah. Not hard work but definitely makes you stiff
I like going through bulk and finding the sellable goodies.
REALLY GOOD CONTENT!
(But i cannot stop think about that sprinklers above all this cards he he he he)
How do you ensure your CF and TCG Player Inventory lines up?
I’ll get there one day
Gotta have set limits and dateslike only buy xy bulk At 2023 Jan for example. Sorted pay more like 1c per card etc etc
I’m really curious about your sorting machine? I’m interested in the business in Europe, can you share some details ?
i just organize it by set then if some common card goes bonkers for some reason i will go through that set and pull em out
OMG what shelves are you using for the card boxes?!?! I need some in the worst way. When you say bulk you mean commons and uncommons as well correct?
It's my dream to open a shop someday thank you for the helpful information!
WHY would you disable the safety interlock on the ROCA cover???
Do you guys net deck pauper decks to sell them as prebuilt decks? Seems like a good way to move bulk.
