- ‘House of the Dragon’ stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke speak to ‘Extra’s’ Jenn Lahmers about the long-awaited ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel. Emma dishes on their character Rhaenyra Targaryen’s desire for the throne and for agency as a woman. Olivia also teases that her character Alicent Hightower becomes a pawn in her father’s political agenda. Plus, Emma reflects on being the first non-binary person cast in the ‘Game of Thrones’ franchise. ‘House of the Dragon’ premieres August 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
emma is so well spoken, they really have a deep understanding of Rhaenyra
Love this duo together, they always seem so supportive of each other. You can see they’re slowly warming up and getting less nervous during interviews.
“She ultimately wants agency.”
She doesn’t necessarily want the throne or it’s responsibilities.
Yes Emma, you’re spot on. You just understand the role you’re playing so well. I’m so glad you know the character you’re playing so well.
I could watch Emma talk for hours. So articulate and great voice too
I really can’t wait to see Olivia and Emma as their characters, it’s sad that we only get them for half of the season
I read the book. We'll all know them well, give it time! The story is so epic!
@@gamintrucker1016 I’ve read it too! I just hope the time skip doesn’t put off people, some times general audiences don’t like recasting characters, but I really can’t wait for the show though
@@dreamfyres I guess sometimes directors have to recast characters to make them look 20 years younger. They're starting the show maybe before the great council of 101.
@@dreamfyres luckily - we just got a second season greenlit already!! So hopefully they had already figured out a nice pacing
Emma is going to be the new love of my life, I just know that
same here!! I love them already, and I'm 100% I will love them as Rhaenyra

@@kledi3817 ....can't wait for this sexist gender ideology to be done with.
@@kledi3817 I didn't understand that... Can you please explain
These 2 humans are slowly becoming friends like fr & I'm all for it.
They (Emma) are one of a kind. And They (Both Emma and Olivia) are gorgeous and doing pretty well in the show.
Love this interview - everyone seems so at ease and relaxed. Loved that the interviewer had friendly banter with them and also gave them time to talk, without interrupting or rushing. I wish this was longer (although they start appearing mid-season so if they talk any more it'd be full of spoilers) !!
"The realms delight" Got me laughing 🤣 they're really bestie
Couldn't wait for these interviews to start coming out, very excited!
When i first saw Emma d'arcy i was so worried that how this actress gonna play Rhaenyra but gotta say she looks so different in her costume and she looks PHENOMENAL literally perfect casting .. hats off to costume hair and makeup department
That’s how most actors are. Lena Headey looks and acts nothing like Cersei for example.

@@Kunumbah1 yes but Lena Headey looks the same off camera. Without the costume. This Rhaenyra on camera is almost like a completely different person offcam. The power of costumes hair and make up indeed. I hope this show won't go down the woke rabbit hole though
I love how this is at a black background and very beautifully illuminated. Just feels so regal in some way haha!
They give off sapphic vibes
Thank god one of these interviews touches on Emma's being nonbinary! I'm so glad to see them get to talk about it some
Yeah, it was cute how she got excited about that question and made sure to express her thoughts clearly regarding personal connection with the character she's playing.
I'm so hyped up for this show .. I wish HBO also gave us the whole season all episodes together like Netflix and Amazon to binge watch
Easier to forget that way. Part of what made Game of Thrones so successful and fun was that people were tuning in each week
@@westerosandchill7644 absolutely right can't argue with that .. even though in binge watching u don't have to wait but doesnt have the same charm .. the hype the wait of 7days make even the dull/bad episodes entertaining ..

I can't wait to see the chaos erupt from the Fandom. I read the book. If the show runners adapt the book material well, we're gonna be talking shit constantly.
Giggling, twirling my hair
Honestly I have a feeling that House of the Dragon will give me Queen Seondeok vibes, given the fact that women are restricted to ascend to a royal throne and Queen Seondeok got that right eventually as a "first", but I'm really curious if Rhaenyra will actually have that same chance as also the "first" in the Seven Kingdoms.
Both have tragic fates in their own ways .. never even thought about this comparison !!! Amazing =3
I’m so excited for this show!
Olivia Cooke speaks like Lena Headey.
That's fitting. Lol

Olivia is so pretty 🥵
Are these the older versions? I haven't read the books or anything but it seems they already spoiled that they're jumping in time for those who havent?

@@jimininakyeopta5323 thanks
these are the main actresses who'll play Alicent and Rhaenyra. They were cast way before the actresses that play their younger versions.
It's in the trailer though, the young ones got casted after the adults, they prob looking for the young actors who look similar with the adults
Emma goes by they/them. I'm just gently going to correct you
Who/ what are you correcting?
@Mer get a life
@@danielhughes5932 people who are using the wrong pronouns for Emma
Well she may go by those pronouns but a lot of people simply won’t address one person in the plural. It’ll never fully catch on so just ignore the people who still call her she. Which is truly what she is anyway. So it’s Not the end of the world if people go with that.

Can’t stand the interviewer. Also, why gender is part of a question. It seems that they haven’t consulted with the interviewee about whether or not they are comfortable to bring their gender identity into their professional career and interview or not. This is that “ oh aw u r gay, so cool “ kind of interviewer. Completely living in her own bubble.
u can tell olivia and emma doesnt like her either lmfao. “ure scaring me”. and so on. they tend to look at each other rather than the interviewer
Well, gender is a big part of Rhaenyra's journey
@@V_i_vi_an i dont think the question is about the character.
Outsider? Have these people read a single line in the books! She was realm's delight, named a heir when she was young, sits at her father's feet when he is on iron throne.
Well, we didn't see the show and don't know the context. You can be called the realm's delight and feel an outsider for some different reasons. For example, if everybody think that I'm mom's best child, it doesn't mean that I feel like that. It's a bit like saying "you are rich, beautiful, intelligent, how you can feel depressed". It depends on how Rhaenyra was written in the show, Emma is playing the show-character, they can't act according to the book if the character was developed in a different way in the show. It's not actor's fault, they talk about how they were told to play their roles.
Also, this book describes characters like they were seen by others, we don't know anything about their personal feelings, it's basically a history book
@@cristinafarmajiu3299 Well, I was talking about the books and this show is supposed to be an adaptation. People can feel whatever they want, but some feelings are merely delusional. Someone, who is the heir apparant, involved in observing how the realm works since a young age and knows how to manipulate public opinion is not an outsider. Her actions, status of her family and her position made her a complete insider.
@@NoNonsense_01 As far as I know from people who've seen the premiere, book Rhaenyra was much younger when she was named the heir, and show Rhaenyra was a teenager, she had her own life and interests, minding her business without thinking about being a queen one day. They say her father was determined to produce a male heir with her mother, and then, her mother died and to her own surprise, suddenly, she was the heir. It was a thing she wanted deep down, but never thought it's going to happen
You are right, they changed a lot of things. Don't really understand why they did this. But in the show context, with her age changed, the "outsider" thing sounds logical
@Rishav Kumar You are right, but half the realm did turn on her almost immediately after Aegon was crowned.
All of that was from Mushroom and the Measters POV.

Evening 💖 💖 n hyyyyyyyyy 🌄 💕 ❤ ✨ 💖 mmm ..
The interviewer was so arrogant. Why do they hire these sort of people?
Well...maybe to you seeing a woman with that confident make you say she's arrogant lmfao oh dude... #womanempoweringwoman
Arrogant? What...
And with really dumb questions!
More agency is the last thing Rhaenyra needed.
At the end not in the beginning when she was forced to marry Laenor
@Daemon Targ Even before the war she was allowed to get away with things that she shouldn’t have. The rightful heir to Driftmark demanded what was his, and she had his head removed and fed him to her dragon. Her weak father than had the next five heirs tongues removed. It really is no wonder how easy it was to persuade Aegon to take the throne when someone like that’s walking around.
@@hhhggbg3000 That’s true I hope they show all her cruelties as well.
@@daemontarg000 But is she really forced to marry Leonor. As I recall, she has a choice.
@@vanessalore9942 I think Viserys threatened her with losing her inheritance if she dint marry him
Interviewer: "First non binary on the cast, how does it feel ?"
Who gives a fuck? It feels exactly as anyone would feel joining the franchise... please don't start to promote this great show on those crapy woke arguments.. i'm already afraid enough with the "female empowerment" interpretation Emma d'Arcy is giving of Rhaenyra. Stick faithful to the book, and follow George's directive, and House of the Dragon could really overthrow GoT. See ya all the 21st
"Faithful to the books"? It's written like a history book from the viewpoint of three people each giving their own versions of what happened? We as book readers don't really know exactly what actually happened so hopefully the show will definitely delve more deeper into that.
@@manvirshergill1739 he’s one of them right wing bucket cases
@@manvirshergill1739 Yeah I’ve been thinking about that too recently. Fire and blood isn’t cannon, parts of it are but the majority can’t be proven therefore it can’t be cannon. On top of that lots of things that could occur in the show might not have been recorded in fire and blood.
@@manvirshergill1739 we agree on that, absolutely the show has to give details, possibly introducing unknown plots and everything. When I say staying true to the books I mean that Rhaenyra shouldn't start to wear an armor and kick ass on the battlefield, also that she shouldn't complain on the patriarcal system or God knows what, she seeks to sit on the throne because the king named her the heir, not because she wants to change the conditions of women.
Honestly I strongly believe that this season will be amazing, I mainly fear for the next seasons when the show will be very popular and twitter starts to put woke pressure on the showrunners. Hope I'm wrong :)
Exactly whenever i hear Emma D'arcy's speak it all about men and women getting equal rights, women empowerment and all that why is she aligning she personal life with the character ..
Not to dis on Emma but, I love Milly's performance that I want to see more of her.
I miss milly
Ugh, first "non Binary" person cast... blah blah, who cares???? Inserting that nonsense into this show will do nothing but ruin it.
I really hope they do not do that
I mean, if the actors can act well (or even if they can't) I don't see the point of getting upset at the idea of including a larger variety of people to work on this kind of show.
Watch I terviews of the other cast. Better take on the world. And story. Milly who plays younger version had one today on etalk … she has much better explanation… I think actors insert. Paddy and Matt in that one too. Also Emma is talking about a character she doesn’t play… young Rhaenyra. That’s who she is describing.
Ruin what? The show? WHY the F it will get ruined?
You don't like binary people?
She is talking about the actress, not the show. The questions are also about how the actress feels about having being casted as Raenyra as a non binary person..it is not ruining anything.
It’s already done
´sigh´ why the short hair
Sad they change... that actress does not even look similar to Milly Alcock who is very good for the role.
I agree they don't look very similar but emma was cast first its milly who was a casting miss as far as similarity. But she's so gorgeous and such a good actress i can suspend my disbelief and pretend that not all but many people in Westeros fictions face structure can change slightly as they age. Doesn't much bother me other than i really like and will miss milly and had a big crush on her lol

Can they get a hotter Targaryen actress please?
To be fair, Emma looks like a completely different person when she's Rhaenyra. The bigger problem is not how hot she is. It's the possiblity that they could make her character gay like falling for her bff alicent.
