How to Clean a Honda/Acura IAC (Idle Air Control Valve)

- It's not necessary to disconnect the coolant lights and connector. DO NOT flood the IAC with carb cleaner. These can easily be damaged so watch out. It's probably best to spray cleaner on a clean rag, then wipe the soot off of the Valve ports. Be sure to disconnect the battery before cleaning. Let the car get to operating temperature after cleaning, before driving. Recorded with Sony a5000
Man you got a clean ass engine bay good job
Warning: Make sure you put your idle air control valve the correct way round!. On my 2002 Honda CRV 2.0ivtec I put it on the wrong way, and coolant flooded into the intake whilst it was running. Fucked the engine completely!. My biggest car mistake ever. :(
Holy shit lmfao
Thanks brother, u just save me $200 on my iacv 👍🏼
You said you were going to start it up and never did. You should have started it for us.
thank you, my integra is happy now
My GSR has been idling a little lower than it should. I think I'll be cleaning mine out today.
Josh hit VTEC yeah they like to lower down to 550-600rpm after some time. After cleaning it's posted chilling at 750ish rpm and its noticeably smoother at idle
There's so a spring that sometimes needs adjusting. It's a Pentagon shaped set screw but you can find a flat head that will work if you find the right size.
bob thompson where is the spring located ?
@@johntucker1328 There's I think 2 different bolts on the outside of the tranny case take them out and under it will be the spring and under the spring there's a steel ball. The bolts are either 14mm or 17mm.
Informative as man, great vid
GutterRash Automotive thanks man I appreciate it :)
PALETAS!!!!!! BTW, thanks for the video.
LOL yeah that guy is always passing by haha thanks for watching
My '97 Acura 1.6EL has been having a low idle for quite a while and only recently started having stalling and hesitation issues. I feared it was worse than just a simple clogged IAC. Though sometimes when I start it up and when it stalls, the oil light flickers quickly once or twice but never stays on.
Might as well take it off and do a complete clean with NEW gasket. OEM gasket is very cheap, few bucks. Do this job once, all in and never have to deal with it again. MY experience has been, that my radiator was rusty, so it clogged the screen with rust particles. So, take coolant reservoir off, and tilt to look to the bottom and see if any dirt resides at the surface. If so, you may want to replace radiator and do a flush, then you go ahead and clean iacv. Coolant runs through both idle valves, so take that into account as to why idle may be surging or low as these valves may be clogged.
Nah
Good tutorial. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great Video. A cleaning and an education. Thanks.
Gonna check mine tomorrow. I'm hoping this is the problem as it wants to idle. It's only when I let off the gas real fast that it dips and dies, if i let it down slowly it acts like it for a moment then picks back up and idles
same here going to do this tomorrow
I don't have a way of getting any carb/brake cleaner since my 95' Accord Wagon won't stay running. Do you think I could get away with 93% Alcohol and a toothbrush/rag? 🙏🤞
Yeah sure try it, Pour some on a rag and clean it out, don’t pour directly on it.. get as much carbon build up out of it as possible and see if it helps
I'm pretty sure the IACV controls the idle once the engine is warm and the ECU controls if from cold and you said the other way round? I know this as on a cold start you can unplug the IACV and it's fine but a few minutes the IACV kicks in and the car will stall if it's not plugged in. I blocked off my coolant lines to the IM as a mod to reduce intake temps. I hate those crappy IM's, the Type R one is much better and easier to work on and looks a lot cleaner lol. Good video
Thanks man! on obd1 cars they had the fitv (fast idle thermal valve) which worked exactly like a thermostat, it'll bypass the TB plate while cold, and once warm, it'll close allowing it to idle down. In obd2 cars they eliminated the fitv, and just used the iacv.. It worked like a thermostat valve and its programmed by the ecu. And yes without the iacv it will not run at all, since the primary function is to maintain idle, during loads from steering input/alternator/ and other accessories,,
The coolent lines are there so it knows when its a cold start.
Great video brotha
Did you have to drain the coolant before you cleaned the idle control valve ?
I have a b20b and when I'm at idle the cars idle will drop lower and hesitate to stay on and then the car dies, unless I put my foot on the gas to keep the rpm's up then it's fine. When it does die, it doesn't give me any problems starting up, I can drive it it just stalls at idle
+mackenzie fleming very nice engine man! Check your IACV, it's on the back of the intake manifold. Clean it or swap it with another one and see if it helps 👍🏽
Integra DIY thanks for the fast response and thank you, may swap soon to H, but anyways I noticed you used carb cleaner is it okay if I use a normal household cleaner? I love the clean oem integra look
+mackenzie fleming you could actually use anything to be honest, just as long as you clean the mesh/screen on one of the ports, you'll be fine. Don't pour anything inside of it though.. spray some cleaner on a rag, and wipe it with your finger, make sure the mesh is clean from soot/carbon. Diss connect your battery just in case. You are welcome and thanks! The oem look is the absolute best, it's all about keeping it original and intact. If you have anymore questions about anything let me know
Integra DIY thanks my dude, I really appreciate the advice!
It gets dirty because of the vac line running from the valve cover to the intake before the throttle body.
Does brake clean work to clean it as well, or should I just use carb cleaner?
Either one is fine. Don’t spray the valve directly. Into a terry clothe first, then wipe down 👍
Are you sure the part you are cleaning is the IAC VALVE? Because I saw other videos where the IAC valve is located under the throttle
The one under the throttle body is called a fast idle thermo valve. 96+ obd2 Honda’s do not have them. They work similar as a thermostat, the valve moves using coolant temps to adjust idle. Hope this helps.

Very informative thanks man!
+Josh loves cars You are very welcome man! Happy new year!
I see you responded relatively recently and I was wondering if I could just clean it out with Q tips and rag? I’m tight asf on cash atm and my teg is really struggling with idle but I can’t afford carb cleaner. Would a rag and Q tips work?
No you would have too many particles and possibly clog it even more
you could use an ear bud to scratch the carbon out??
is dhat the paletero man in da bacc? niqqas was always clutch
My idle is at 1.5 or 2 when driving and it will hesitate high idle before dropping to a regular idle point when driving at 65 mph. I own a 2012 Acura MDX and took to dealer for battery change and when I left it started doing this. And called dealer and they deny doing anything to my car. But I never had this issue prior so I would rather self repair than be suckered again by this Acura Dealer.
wouldn't it have been easier to take it off? im in the same process of cleaning mine and it was easier to take it off completely lol
+618 DA9Keefer it would definitely be easier, but I didn't want to deal with leaking coolant on the concrete and trying to catch the coolant. people are asshats right there lol
Integra DIY ah gotcha. I understand that lol
Is this the same for the 2012 Acura MDX
Old post but I was researching and read through the comments. I live in a townhome and we get one parking space. We have to do what we have to do to not leak and juices or HOA will be on your ass. Lol
Nice video. I'm having a problem with my 92 si when the car warms up, the idle dips really low like below 500 rpm and almost wants to die but dosent. On cold start it does what it should, just once it warms up the idle dosent hold steady and dips really low. Could this be the iacv?
I believe that’s a d16z6 engine I could be wrong, definitely check the iac also the fitv fast idle thermal valve, located on the bottom of the throttle body.
Make sure the engine has a full tune up, and check for vacuum leaks
@@IntegraDIY for the fast idle valve do u just want to make sure that the plunger is screwed all the way down with a flat head?
@@ryanrezi Yes, but you also want to remove it first and clean the inside of it as well as the metal plunger where they seat together. Don't over-tighten it to the point of marring the plastic, just barely snug it down.
Can you clean it with degreaser ?
I might have to clean my idle air control valve also
do these go bad frequently cuz I replaced mine maybe half a year ago?
Leonardo _DC4 what issues are you having? If you changed it 6 months ago it's perfectly fine.. they do get dirty, so make sure you keep it clean, I think yours is fine since it's been replaced recently
when I'm at a complete stop on neutral or in gear my Rpms raise to about 2-2500 rpms or higher then it'll decrease then idle up and down slightly
Check for a vacuum leak, extra air is getting into the intake manifold. Check for a damaged hose at the manifold would be the first thing to check
ok, I'm going to replace my ect sensor because my car marked check engine for that specific code so I'll see if that's it.
Out of topic question... But can the resonator From The exhaust get clogged??? I have no cat and it feels like I lost HP and sound From The muffler...
Rene Martinez The resonator is a perforated pipe inside of a larger pipe.. so it’s nothing to really come loose and clog.. first thing I’ll do is make sure you have no codes on the computer.. second thing I’ll do is a compression test.. a compression test will tell you everything
Only thing I would of done differently is actually remove it you could of damaged the iacv
Brake clean and carb clean can mess up the o2 senser if it all doesn't dry up before you start it up.
Do I clean both holes? Because I notice you only cleaned the left side.
I believe only one side has a mesh screen that could get clogged. But definitely wouldn’t hurt to clean both ports, and the mating surface of the valve and the mating surface of the manifold 👍
@@IntegraDIY in the video when you unbolt the air control valve, it’s kinda hard to tell from camera view. Did you turn right to bolt?
Both bolts have to be removed from the valve. 12mm. Separate the valve from the manifold, and clean
@@IntegraDIY My apologies I think I could had rephrase or said it more clear. I’m asking which way did you turn to take off the air control valve.
Does this help w idle surge? Ihave no vacuum leak, Icant find any air leak on the vacuum lines bro
I buddy of mine with a 2000 civic has the same issue. I’ve cleaned the iac and it didn’t not fix it. We replaced almost every seal and gasket, sensor etc and nothing.
We even did a valve lash adjustment and even though the specs were too tight, after a good adjustment nothing.
Get a can of brake clean and spray the manifold and TB, pcv and other vacuum hoses..
Check timing with a timing light
But to be honest, that car had me stumped.. I never figured it out for him. I did everything and it was throw a lean code and a fluctuating idle, but absolutely no leak
@@IntegraDIYdang bro, I’ve been having trouble w this car is a 00 SI w 96 spec b18c swap… & Ijust cleaned the iacv n was struggling to turn on, I finally got it on m running but when I step on it the idle goes almost to 0 n it feels like it’s going to shut off on me
Quick question my car is a type r but it has a gsr ecu, would this be the cause?
That lil tan thing by the fuel rail , can u do a video on changing that?
What spray did you use to clean it? Does anyone know?
Carburetor cleaner.. you can buy it at any auto parts store such as autozone or other similar stores
Why not start or afterwards so we know it worked
A slight rough idle fix won’t be noticeable on camera. I didn’t have major rough idle or fluctuating idle. This was just how to get the soot off
integra eacv valve air control clean
how many miles on the car
At this time it had around 170k. It was totaled at 198k
@@IntegraDIY 😭 rip. my motor is revving high i think it’s the fit valve under the throttle body
Take off your throttle cable to make sure it’s not sticking. Then clean the throttle body and butterfly with carb cleaner. Check the throttle body bolts/nuts and make sure they’re tight. Make sure all hoses and sensors and whatnot are not causing a vacuum leak. Also, change the pcv valve they can get stuck sometimes and allow air in. Take off the iac and see if it had carbon build up, clean it as shown. Do not get any liquid cleaner inside the iac, it could damage it
@@IntegraDIY i didn’t mess with the iacv it ended up being my FITV underneath my throttle body. it had something inside that was backed all the way out of its threads and it was really dirty. i cleaned it and only left it backed out a turn from being fully seated and now my car runs and idles like a dream. this is on a 95 gsr with the b18c1 at 170k miles
So it’s not righty tighty, lefty loosey…
gon be my first time doing this hope all goes well
The iacv has nothing to do with emissions it called idle air control because it controls the idle speed of the engine.
bob thompson The iacv speeds up the idle on a cold engine, causing the engine to warm faster.. that’s to keep emissions low. But it’s main purpose is an anti-stall feature under load.
I can't get mine off. I'm irritated
And h8
Ow do i adjust the trottle ?
Do you mean idle? You shouldn't have to. But there's a flat. Head screw on the throttle body thats held in place by locktite.
got a question bro....sometimes at cold start my gsr pedal gets stuck after I give it gas ...it gets stuck for a good 5 to 10 seconds then it closes ...it's it the throttle cable ?
If you are running an aftermarket Throttle body, sometimes the throttle body will feel sticky like that. If it's the factory stock throttle body, than take off the cable from the throttle body, the. Take it off the gas pedal under the dash, and lube it.. I'm guessing some ATF (automatic transmission fluid) would do the job
Yeah it's all stock....sometimes it does it ..not all the time....alright man thanks for the heads up......do you know about transmission too?
my tranny doesn't grind it shift all smooth on 5 gears ....but reverse it doesn't grind but when I'm reversing it goes with out a problem but when I press the clutch still on reverse it feels like something is holding from reversing ...
It's actually funny haha because every integra does that.. The shifter feels stuck and it doesn't wanna go into reverse? It's a minor issue but totally normal. I'm guessing it happens because of abuse and wear. Just change out your fluid with Honda fluid and live with it.. Mine does that too lol usually pumping the clutch makes it go into reverse easier.. It also happened to me while driving to go into 1st gear at a stop light
Integra DIY I thought I had to rebuild my tranny ....cus literally feels like something is holding it back from reversing....sometimes my engine moves cus bad motor mounts ..
What about a 98 Acura CL?
Yeah issue with my 97 Acura CL 2.2
It's not emissions
Your camera handling skills gave me a damn headache
I’m sorry to hear about your brain pico
Bruh didn't even clean anything. You wiped down the contact surface. Completely just 😤
No, I cleaned the mesh screen inside one of the ports. It was completely blocked with soot. I wiped it and made sure the screen was clean.
@@IntegraDIY Oh my apologies then can I ask you about a high idle I've been having?
Video çok komik olmuş
