I've always thought one of the really nice things about Placido Domingo is that, besides having a beautiful voice, he looks like a leading man. Tall, dark, and handsome, you know? I'm partial to his rendition of this song over Corelli's or Bjoerling's... I tend to prefer a darker timbre. But that's just preference. Ricciarelli's hat is hilarious :D
@Mixtupabit I have that exact recording. When I listen to this aria on Domingo and Karajan's recording, it normally brings me close to tears. I'm tempted to upload that recording on my channel. Its too beautiful. The only drawback to this aria it that it is severly overshadowed by Nessun Dorma for obvious reasons.
TheInquisitive4Ever: A man that started playing a piano in a bar, formed to be tenor being baritone, is a wonderful orchestra director and sang in the most important theatres of the world is not a joke, we probably, the Mediocre and ordinary people, are a joke next to him. Excuse my english, is fatal but i hope you could get the whole meaning of this. P.S: This one was not a good performance i have to say but watch and listen to his recording whiht Leontyne Price and Eva Marton.
As much as I love Bjorling as Calaf, the fact that he (and Pavarotti) could sing that part is evidence of outstanding technique. If mere mortal lyrical tenors try their hand at Calaf, they're likely to ruin their voices. Bjorling apparently even told his daughter that he had to go full-bore when next to Birgit Nilsson in Turandot. With his technique, he could do that without damaging anything. I know tenors who have been less lucky.
Placido Domingo is cataloged one of the finest tennors of all times. TheInquisitive4Ever is cataloged one of the finest idealistic-idiotics commeters of opera. I hope you enjoy whatching dvd's. go to a theatre and listen more tenors. stop reading bullshit. art is what transmits you quality and feelings doesn't matter if you are getting payed or doing it for free. how many tenors didin't have the oportunity to show their work. lucky him that could find a chance. embrace and not condemn for envy
There are pros and cons in this performance... Bad: 1:48 to 2:07 is weak. The high Bb is really strained. Good: :57 to 1:03 is very good. There's some ringing when he sings "con te." Also some nice phrasing.
everybody knows domingo's problems whiht high notes but that is not it, is not enough. Acting, preparing a roll, musicality. why do you think he has been so acclaimed during all this years? media? no, he is, whith or whithout a high B or C one of the best interpreters of opera, and probably that makes you mad because not having corelli's or del monaco's natural and phisical qualities he achieved success, the highest any tenor can get in a career.
@mrcharro Perhaps the assumption is that Del Monaco had natural qualities, But he had to build his voice 1 step at a time.Del Monaco could not be heard past the 3rd row when 1st appearing on the scene.Don't you think a world class tenor should have good hi-notes?& stay within the repertoire that is suited for him?I think many of the spinto roles were just too big for his voice& many times he became strangled in the passaggio in spite of his interpretations&beautiful quality of voice.perplexed
Jussi Björling was the best Calaf of all time. Many people forget that this is a very romantic role not just heroic. That´s why he´s better suitet than Corelli for this role. Corelli is the second best Calaf though.
Listen again, this time with the heart, not the mind. Drop your pre conceived notions, they get in the middle. Domingo does not know you, and holds you no grudge. Why do you?
"hooted Hispanic voices do not fit well with the Italian prepertoire which calls for a bright and resonant voice which is full of harmonics" No they fit, veeery nicely. Domingo's voice here is beautifully mellow. In fact I have not heard such a beautiful merge between singers, choirs and orchestra that here occurs. This aria in particular is very tender and sensitive. So " hooted and Hispanic" very nice here. Sorry Inquisitive4ever, but Domingo has his flaws and his virtues. Fairness is a +.
@musicsongbirdie It's wonderful that You like Domingo over Corelli.but in no way is Domingo's voice darker than Corelli's.I saw them both live.Corelli's voice is much darker and FCreally controls&dominates the aria with mezza voce and a better vocal line without straining. It's not just interpreting the role, but the voice should be suitable for the opera. There are also many recordings with Domingo that are enhanced to make his voice sound larger, which I find very deceiving to fool the public
Adoro Domingo.
Have to agree with you. Domingo maybe the best conducter of the famous tenors but when it comes to singing he´s overrated and here it´s absolutely obvius if you just listen.
Beautiful setting, great synchronicity between all involved in this production. Magic.

Beautiful - my favourite tenor I think!

I just saw Domingo in "simon boccanegra", amazing, he's such an artist..
Magnifico Calaff

😃😃 cierto 👍👍 que grande!

He tried composing?(!) Intersting...to say the least.
Hear to Domingo at Metroplitean production 1988, maybe better then Corelli
The orchestra is a bit sharp, right?!

Mingo? Let me guess, you're Australian?

not as good as the 1988 performance that someone posted. It's a little flat.

I like Domingo, I always liked his great voice, but here he's very week. Actally, his voice broke. Listen 1:59-2:3.
I like Paul Potts voice better... I wish he could see him as Calaf, I bet he would do a better job than Domingo.
ps: I am kidding hahaahahaha
