Damn, _Gettysburg 1863_ is easily one of the best discs (or final three songs, depending on what version you got) any metal band has ever released. This first disc of _The Glorious Burden_ is ok, but goddamn, disc 2 is amazing. tbh, I was never a big fan of Matt Barlow, not that I dislike his vocals. (time to piss off a bunch of old school Iced Earth fans >_>) To me Tim Owens is what really made that album truly great. The writing and music would have been pretty good with Barlow (interesting to consider what it would sound like with Block on vocals tbh), but Owens is amazing on vocals there. (I have been a fan of his since Priest's Jugulator. I grew up blasting stuff like Screaming for Vengeance from a record and while Jugulator is only a decent album, his vocals were great and he only got better in later years imo... and seriously, he replaced Rob Halford, even if it was just 2 albums, stepping in for Halford and doing a good job of it is testament to his ability) If you can't tell, my loyalty is to what I think of as good, not a particular lineup or whatnot.

@@kylekatarn5964 I used to have a boxed set by these guys and all the albums were and are excellent, if you didn't see my previous comment The Glorius Burden is excellent too along with companion DVD
To all the negativity: It's suppose to sound like it came from "The Glorious Burden," but with their modern sound. Not about the length either. It's about war. So, yes, their melodic intros & choir would be in a song like this. Musicians do that to give you a sense of story within a song. Esp if you close your eyes or take out the vocals. It's not really about the lyrics. It's how they play it that gives you a realistic feature. Iced Earth has always been that way. They've always been a more melodic & prog approach than your usual thrash & power metal bands. They've always had their own sound. Makes them unique. Also, they changed drastically when Tim Owens took over, and have continued on that similar sound since "Horror Show." And if you noticed, each release under Stu Block has been heavily experimented, because of what he brings with his singing talents.
In France, we have the "Ronarc'h Brigade" : six thousand men, mostly "marines" used as regular infantrymen during WW1. They were all from the region of "Bretagne" (far west of France, its most celtic part). From september to november 1914, they were sent to Belgium to hold the advance of the Germans. They were expected to hold for a few weeks but keep their spot for almost one month, losing only half of their men, while killing four or five times more Germans soldiers (in french, we say that us, Bretons, we are "stubborn" ^^). Finally, in november 1914, they were relieved and send back to France. True fact : one of my grand-grand uncle was among them (Joseph Lézin, 1889-1914), he was injured at the end of the battle and died at the military hospital. He have had his 25th birthday two month prior, just at the begining of the Great War, and get a medal for "great courage during action".
In America we usually make fun of the French for surrendering, but I actually know my history and the French have had their badass moments. Let's not forget the French actions in WW1. And not to mention after surrendering in WW2 to Nazi Germany, the French Resistance kept fighting as guerillas.
@@ericolsen5592 The idea to make fun of the French for surrendering stems from the refusal to follow Bush into Irak. There's never been any allusion to "surrender" before that time, to the contrary the USA were revering France for their help in the American War of Independence. The surrender concept is a pure propaganda tool invented to ridicule an ally who didn't want to roll over when told to do so.
@@Liopot68 False, it was actually the French surrender in WW2. However I agree that it's still highly misleading as the French are much more effective than we make them out to be. In WW2 were using WW1 era tactics and had very relaxed command structure. The French guerilla resistance kept the fight going well until their liberation in 1944. And let's not forget about their actions in WW1, especially at Verdun.
People talking about the intro and middle suck.. Do not listen to these dweeb comments. Iced earth you did awesome with the intro and middle, that pick up in the middle is great!
Great atmosphere IMO, the live performance was brilliant when I saw them perform it. It was their only encore and the fans were so into the song...and this was in Canada too!
The intro and middle make the song! It's not exactly doom, but like something is on the precipice and about to happen big time, for worse or better. You don't know till the tempo picks up. Then you know it's awesome! And you get that twice, what more could you ask for? "Storm of lead", "The hills alive with murder" Two examples of fantastic lyrics. I love this tune!
Between Iced Earth, Sabaton, and Iron Maiden...you have more than enough material for a Junior-Level ROTC Military History course. MASSACRE TOUS, ERIN BATARDS!
I've listened to this song and watched this video many times, but just realized this message is much deeper than initially realized. "Your courage defines all you are" applies to us all, not just those in battles of physical violence. Our true values, which are more a conclusion of our selves matured, mature through the exercise of courage throughout the test of mortal life. Great courage would not carelessly risk life and the ability to procreate or provide for one's family just to test valor. A person of virtue must carefully consider values and personal role in serving higher purpose, and courage is exercised when that conviction is tested, to measure our willingness to sacrifice what matters less for what matters more.
love it when John draws inspiration from history, some of his best work comes from it and this song wouldn't feel out of place on my favorite IE album The Glorious Burden.
Iced Earth Always had this Beyond huge sound because Jon will fill an entire room with amplifiers just to get it. Its much bigger than any active pickup could hope to be.

Seems that the members of Iced Earth are U.S. Civil War history buffs. They have multiple songs like this on The Glorious Burden. This one seems to be about the Battle of Fredericksburg.
You think they're good, check out Civil War. Its a band comprised of former Sabaton members that does several songs like this. One in particular to watch for is Road to Victory.
I listened to this song about two to three times yesterday and I thought it was a decent Iced Earth song and today I listened to it a few more times and now I love it. The one thing I learned about Iced Earth's music that has come out in the last ten years or so need a few or many listens before they grow on you. Their first album all the way to The Glorious Burden only needed one listen for me , but everything that came out after needed more listens to enjoy them.
Russ Hanson You got it man. I have now listened to this whole album at least ten times and I love every song on it. There were a few songs that didn't grab me at first but after a good ten listens or more I loved them all. Iced Earth is one band that has never failed on me and have put out way more great songs than filler. I can never understand how they are not bigger than they are here in the States.
John Katsoudas -- Brother I feel yah. I was there when Metallica got their start and I like to think I made a substantial contribution to their future fandom. Iced Earth to me belies so many common sense things. They are basically the best pound for pound straight up US power.thrash metal of all time yet very few people even have a clue who they are. I don't get it. I even strategically pick certain songs out like I used to do with Metallica way back in the day. Doesn't work with IE. There are a very few folks like you and I that get the brilliance of the Jon Schaffer riff machine....song writing machine..historian....great dude. You and I know though, and that is all that matters.
John Katsoudas -- It is almost criminal how underappreciated they are. Jon is right up there with James and Dave and Tony etc. I just don';t get why folks don't like them more than they do. Traditional heavy metal at its absolute finest. This album is killing it. So awesome
Russ Hanson Absolutely!!! Jon Schaeffer is one of the greatest songwriters in Heavy Metal music ever!! He has written many many great songs, and has had great lineups throughout all of Iced Earths history. I love all the material with Matt Barlow, Tim Owens, and Stu Block. Jon Schaeffer is definitely up there with Dave Mustaine, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, and many more when it comes to great songwriting. This band should have been huge . I am glad I discovered them when Burnt Offerings came out and I have been a huge fan ever since. I even love Jon's side projects Demons And Wizards and Sons Of Liberty a lot.
I like history and heavy metal. This song is a perfect combination. Songs like this one reminds me what people sacrificed in the past so we can have a better life today, but it makes mad for the stupid things in modern era people complain and demand or fighting for in the western countries (vegans, feminists, etc)
@Erwin Rommel yes, I have also watched 2 live performances in Greece, the first time was when they were not very popular and we were about 300 people in a small hall and the second one when sabaton came with the band named accept in Athens and we were thousands. Both concerts were awesome
My ancestors extend their thanks and gratitude. I wonder how many people understand how much the Irish contributed (hint their was a whole part of the army that fought against slavery completely made up of Irish )
So far, I'm a huge fan of Raven Wing, it somehow reminds me of the masterpiece that is "Cthulu". The other ones are amazing as well, of course, how can they not be ? It's Iced Earth. But there is such an emotional, atmospheric resonance in RW that I dont fully find in the other songs released so far that are more, let's say, "traditional". I'm at work so I cant listen to Clear the Way right now but at almost 10 minutes, I feel it could be one of those monumental beautiful songs like A Question of Heaven, Come What May, Damien...

This one is a masterpiece skillfully crafted by I.E. They did an outstanding job on this song, as well as telling the tragedy of the Irish Brigade at the Battle of Fredericksburg. 10/10
Twas a tragedy, but not one without a twisted sort of silver lining. They were slaughtered, but not before putting up a fight that even the Confederates were forced to respect just for its sheer tenacity.

I grew up blasting stuff like Screaming for Vengeance from a record and while Jugulator is only a decent album, his vocals were great and he only got better in later years imo... and seriously, he replaced Rob Halford, even if it was just 2 albums, stepping in for Halford and doing a good job of it is testament to his ability)
If you can't tell, my loyalty is to what I think of as good, not a particular lineup or whatnot.
Bought glorious burden album two disc plus the Gettysburg trilogy DVD
By far one of the greatest lyrics out there, those guitars simply blow my mind, drummer is tight and out a of normal human being, those doble base wow man, iced earth forever.
A band who is up there. One of several favourites of mine . Shouldn't be underrated but sadly are. Rock on guys.
This song is my favorite from the album Incorruptible. I probably already heard this song about 100 times and just love it.
Mine would be Raven wing then clear the way and seven headed whore I'm Australian iced Earth have been my favourite Metal band since I discovered them two years ago never heard of them until two years ago ❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🤟🤟🤟
This song should have millions and millions of views. Iced Earth in my opinion is one of the most consistent bands that have released many great albums. Jon Schaffer is one of the greatest songwriters in the music industry.
i loved this band from the first top ten
Almost 2 million
Proud of my Irish heritage.
Oi never mess with the Irish or we fight ya ain't that right? My father's actually Irish so I've always wanted to visit Ireland to see what my Grandpa's Homeland was like though my father's dad died when my dad was around 13 so 18 years later I'm born from my mother that's Scottish and Cherokee and German

That's the first time I've heard of Iced Earth. Great song. I shall have to look further into them 😉🇮🇪😃
Check out some of the old stuff.. if you want iron maiden like story telling check out the Gettysburg trilogy. If you want something darker check out a lot of the older stuff stuff with Barlow on vocals. Horror story has a lot of good ones if you like old horror movies as well.
@@trifidhm, that's great. Will do. Thanks 👍
This is sickening, incredibly, absolutely awesome!!! My neck hurts.
I just love the USA history. Respect from Portugal 🇵🇹🤝🇺🇸
One of the best songs of the new album along with Black Flag, Raven Wing & Ghost Dance . Simply love it. I am happy that Iced Earth included it on the set list. Please come to Brazil ASAP.
Cheers.
Great Song I have Irish ancestry and song makes me think of that and how proud I am to have Irish blood in me.
Mother of god, I love that "intrepid sons with heads held high" part of this song! DAMN! One of the best songs from Iced Earth.
the song i anticipated most from the album. i think it's great after the first listen.. cannot beat Gettysburg's superiority but an amazing new epic. it has some Running Wild flavor in it which is a good thing.
The Glorious Burden is epic. Schaffer is a machine when it comes to song writing.

I never heard of Running Wild until this comment, I went to listen to one of there songs, and you are SO right. I can hear it
@@twiztidlestat Running Wild has some really great stuff, glad you got turned on to them!
I used to have their boxed set that had The Glorious Burden in it and it was all brilliant to listen to. Those used to be some hellacious times indeed.
That Album is so good. Never gets old.
@@kylekatarn5964 I used to have a boxed set by these guys and all the albums were and are excellent, if you didn't see my previous comment The Glorius Burden is excellent too along with companion DVD

I love to imagine how these historical songs play out, and I love how epic of an image this gives me.
Now I want an iced earth t-shirt that says "IRISH! Clear the way!"
Same.

Me too man.
Please make this happen, Jon
The Irish they were talking about were the ulster_scots, do you still want it?
And let's not forget about their actions in WW1, especially at Verdun.
surrender
@Bman Chu Point is, they didn't quit. They were an underequipped, unorganized guerilla force.
Magnificent album with this tremendous outro’ track. One of my most favourite instrumentals is also on it as in “ Ghost Dance”
this song its the perfect mix between Iron Maiden and Iced Earth! tottaly awesome!!
@thales braga, you noticed it too :D

Some Saxon vibes as well
My 4 year old loves this band!
Jon's Voice is giving me some inner power that i can't handle !
People talking about the intro and middle suck.. Do not listen to these dweeb comments. Iced earth you did awesome with the intro and middle, that pick up in the middle is great!
But both of them are a bit too long dont you think?
@@goldeneggthatneverhatched4252 it only lends itself to the epic quality.
@@travisfoster6473 Eh, true

Daaaaym! This is the best single they've released so far! So epic and powerful -Reminds me of the older stuff :)
love it when John draws inspiration from history, some of his best work comes from it and this song wouldn't feel out of place on my favorite IE album The Glorious Burden.
A serious shoutout to those brave Irish men who fought and died for a fight that wasn’t theirs to begin with.
I kick off each morning with this song. Such a criminally underrated band

What a magnificent song!! I found this band/song while doing some research on the Battle of Fredericksburg.
Another amazing song! With the lyrics it feels like Glorious Burden part 2!
Such a powerful and emotional song but brilliant iced Earth forever ❤️🤟🤟🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Iced Earth Always had this Beyond huge sound because Jon will fill an entire room with amplifiers just to get it. Its much bigger than any active pickup could hope to be.

Iced Earth has just gotten on my radar a couple of years ago. Probably my favorite metal band. Thanks to Brent Smedley! Metal Lives! Iced Earth style!
One of my friends had told me about Iced Earth back in December when their was was ice on the ground so it was very fitting time to listen to these guys and well I will be continuing to listen to this band for the years to come!

Iced Earth's The Red and the Black, awesome song, great band
This tune is fucking heavy. Worked in the yard today and whenever this tune came on through my speaker it sounded like an outdoor show was going on. Heavy ass tune and killer/classic Jon and Iced Earth. It sounds better every time. Right up there with Hold at all Costs. Bad jam man.

Seems that the members of Iced Earth are U.S. Civil War history buffs. They have multiple songs like this on The Glorious Burden. This one seems to be about the Battle of Fredericksburg.

You nailed it John Katsoudas. Thanks
I also like history and heavy metal!
@Erwin Rommel yes, I have also watched 2 live performances in Greece, the first time was when they were not very popular and we were about 300 people in a small hall and the second one when sabaton came with the band named accept in Athens and we were thousands.
Both concerts were awesome
Discovered a new favorite band today. To my collection it goes.
Respect to the brave Irish-Americans who forged their citizenship and liberty in blood.
Just Irish at that point not American irish
My ancestors extend their thanks and gratitude. I wonder how many people understand how much the Irish contributed (hint their was a whole part of the army that fought against slavery completely made up of Irish )
And I do agree Irish not American Irish
Love this song and album. This song hits the heart.
Triskan stu is a very good singer but to bad Matt isn't here to make it the best it can be.
barlow is too old get over it
Barlow is a god
I hear you, but in all honestly Stu is where its at for Iced Earth. He has the range and brings his own to the table. Barlow has Ashes of Ares and another side Project, Sentinels with Jonah from Pyramaze. Check em out

Ice Blade Films thank, you, I'll look this up now. :)
Twas a tragedy, but not one without a twisted sort of silver lining. They were slaughtered, but not before putting up a fight that even the Confederates were forced to respect just for its sheer tenacity.
