I'm a Repair Agent and I generally work on some Sony TV's once in awhile. Whenever I'm needing to service a Sony TV, Sony is the only brand that provides a step by step triage system, puts everything step by step in the most simplistic format, and retrieves all the parts I'll need depending on issues with their particular TV I'm dealing with. No hunting for parts online, google, parts store, etc.. That is some quality stuff right there. They also utilize these triages to see what kind of issues they have with their TV's so they can use that to improve their products every year.

Quality control always leads me back to Sony. Replaced my 8-year-old bedroom Sony LCD recently and decided to try Hisense based upon reviews. Was disappointed with the image processing and even more disappointed in the quality of the panel. Replaced it with a Sony X85J and had a much more pleasurable experience all around. I most certainly could have gotten more for my money with a Chinese brand, such as local dimming, which this television lacks, but the peace of mind of having a set that will be as dependable as the set it's replacing is worth it for me. I'm considering doing the same when I replace my living room TV, as every LG OLED I've tried has had a tint on one side of the display. As I sit off angle in there, it was just too distracting to live with.

    • @tjhrulz

As some who works retail in TVs for years and I would largely agree with it with the exception of the first month. Always seems we have nothing but issues with new Sony models for the first month or so having random bugs or a higher than expected for Sony failure rates, but after that first month of production I would absolutely agree with you.
Now IMHO model makes every bit as much a difference as brand, higher end TVs tend to just have less issues (Sony's X75 TVs when they decide to release one that low priced every other year and then the following year decide not too because they feel it sullies their brand) and budget sets from other "premium" brands are notorious for having issues. However, that is what happens when you buy lower binned panels and use liquid capacitors; and you are going to do that in those cheaper sets because you have to get the cost down somehow.

I bought sony XF90 over XE90 because it was better in every way but also bought it because of the dolby vision support. Yes I waited half a year for it but it did not matter as back in 2018 there were barely any movies/shows with dolby vision so I rolled the dice.

Absolutely agree with your point of the Sony tax being less of a thing this year compared to the other "premium" brands with the exception of their flagship sets. Also I would even add Sony has had really good sales this year on the J series as well, while they started a little higher MSRP ever since the beginning of 2022 they have been rock solid on sales that are very competitive, so I will highlight some of their 65in pricing since it is what I am most familiar with off the top of my head over time.
Getting into say a entry 4K 120 set like the X85j and you look it it's equivalent Samsung and its usually $100 more, and LG didn't do a basic 4K 120 this year in the US (Except I think they did a limited run costco special that I would probably avoid).
Want entry level FALD? Sony X90J has usually only been like $50-$100 more than the Q80A, and for a bit was cheaper until Samsung realized how stupid they were being and reacted. For that little extra you are while none of the over saturation Samsung is known for as well as a VA panel so better dark room performance at the cost of some view angles. LG Nano 90 is typically closer to $100-$200 but lacks the brightness of the other sets
Overall I was really happy with Sony's lineup and I feel that most of my tweaks I would have said they should make they have made (Although since they have not announced it in all sizes could the A90K be a little closer to the G2? Would be great if it was only a couple hundred dollars more and then you could just say well it is the cost difference of a good soundbar and it has better sound so it being more is moot for many customers)

Really great take on this topic Caleb. I am a life long Sony owner. Started my journey in the late 90's with a 40" Trinitron Vega. I think the stiff competition has yielded better products from all brands to be sure. One major event cemented my path with Sony. In the early 2000's I had a rear projection 1080p Sony that went all green (something with the color wheel...idk), and I contacted Sony even though it was out of warranty. Well, someone somewhere thought my business was worth it cause they shipped me a then new HX series LCD from their back stock but UN-OPENED and all I paid was my state tax on the MSRP of the TV. (Guess it was good I registered all my purchases LOL) Anyway...I am a purist in terms of image quality. I have mountains of 4k discs and enjoy the best the format has to offer. I am currently rocking an X950G in the 75" range but am swooning over the X95K. Cheers to Sony for still making great products.

Had a Sony BRAVIA from 2009, passed it onto my girlfriend and it is shocking how good the picture and build quality was on that thing- it's still going strong and looking great.
I replaced it with the A9S OLED, and the processing and build quality on that is also incredible.
I think the thing about these Sony TVs is that they are kind of unbeatable, but to get there you need go calibrate them correctly for color and utilize all the settings they provide. A lot of people don't like BFI, but I think it's because they haven't used Sony's latest BFI. Motion is extremely clear and they have a software solution now that compensates for lost brightness. The AI upscaling stuff works very well and isn't another sharpening filter. Likewise, the gradation smoothing is very good.
For home use you can find a beautiful balance between absolute accuracy and processing enhancement that truly enhances in a subtle and effective way rather than butchering the image.
Care has gone into all of those processing options in a way that really shows once you dig into calibration and setting up the picture. I really don't think you'll find a better home theater display than a Sony master series OLED.

    • @jimv1983
      @jimv1983 2 года назад

I have a Sony A80J. In my experience the BFI has the same loss of brightness and SOE as any other brand. I'm very happy with the TV but I haven't experienced the "software solution that compensates for lost brightness" that you refer to. I keep BFI at the lowest setting.

    • @sleepstar44
      @sleepstar44 2 года назад

@@jimv1983 It is subtle, but what I'm referring to is that Sony BFI on the lowest setting, and I believe this is branded as their "x-motion clarity plus" or something similar, it will apply BFI selectively to darker areas of the screen. This leads to a bit less loss of brightness compared to the 2 and 3 level BFI settings, where like on 2 BFI is applied the same to the entire image and on 3 it's a slower flicker so is even more noticeable.
It's not a huge difference but I can tell. Definitely a matter of taste whether you like it still.

It's possible LG does something similar now but I'm not aware of it.

I have a buddy that owns an electronics store that sells and services audio equipment. They sell Sony, LG and Samsung. Their store stopped selling any of the cheaper brands that are usually carried by the Walmart's and whatnot because of quality. They now only sell the brands that they think are good enough with quality so they don't have a bunch of ticked off clients because their tvs went to crap after a little over a year, or out of their warranty period. They like the 3 brands they sell but without question the brand they see the least amount of quality issues with is Sony. So just because some of the brands look really nice for what you pay for these things you do somewhat get what you pay for. I am happy paying a little more for my Sony tvs and not having to worry about them going bad and having to buy a new one every other year. You do get what you pay for. But everyone has their own ideas of what they like and think is good. There is really no such thing as "oversatured colours" -- in this context -- but there is such a thing as an [uncalibrated] TV you can't even really calibrate well -- meaning if you try to get the TV to show the colours according to some standard colour space (Rec. 709 or Rec 2020) for the signal it is asked to display, it may show one colour correctly, at the expense of a lot of other colours. The TV you buy isn't calibrated at the factory, and in fact the opposite may as well be true -- the TV is designed to woo and awe you as potential buyer in the store room, set to some "Vivid" colour profile where you feel like you're going to get colour therapy in your living room if you buy it. The reality is, 99% of content we watch at home is designed for "normal" colours, and that's where uncalibrated TVs or those which don't have regular panel response, appear more like your date turning out insane when you bring them home.
What you want is a "calibratable" TV with a large enough colour volume. And you have _zero_ chance to assess these qualities in the shop. Most shops don't let you play around with TVs like that, and you can't, at any rate, bring your calibration equipment there.
I bought a Philips TV that was great on paper -- had good colour volume (decent coverage of the [HDR] Rec 2020 colour space, for instance) , but after repeated calibration attempts it turned out the TV was a "fake" that was sold as premium.
Anyway, sorry for the wall of text -- your TV doesn't show you its true colours if you don't calibrate it. You won't see them unless you set it to show them, and that's done with calibration. Or you will see some of them but at the expense of "skin tones" and shadow detail. Heed my advice :)

      * Panasonic: pure raw picture quality is the focus. ( Recommend to cinephiles)
      * Sony: excellent picture all around for most use cases ( recommend to people who care about mixed usage scenarios)
*LG: good bang for buck. usually packed with features. Not as refined ( but still good) at Cinema and TV as Sony and Panasonic, but usually better for other use cases ( PC monitor, gaming).
*Samsung: I just can't define them. They try all of the things listed above, but... They are just missing something lately. I rarely recommend.

Sony may get their OLED panels from LG, but Sony is substantially better out of the box for colors with superior processing chips. The LG C2 OLED TVs are really great, but colors are not as balanced. Sony gets it right automatically no matter what the source and then factor the remote, Google Home Screen and settings are better.
Some of the issue may be cultural change. I’m older and in general a Japanese fanboy, but kids are into gaming and like Korean brands more. 100% agree with you. I’m a Gen Xer that grew up with Japanese products being the pinnacle. I’ve had Sony tvs most of my life. Never had a problem with them. Some tvs lasted well over 20 years. Only reason I don’t have them anymore is because flat panel tvs became a thing. I still use the 1st Sony flat panel tv that we purchased over 20 years ago. Last tv I purchased was a top of the line Samsung about 10 years ago. Within the 1st year, blown speaker. I never have the tv loud. Ended up having to buy a sound bar just so I don’t have to hear the crackling of the tv speaker. I had a LG refrigerator…every few months I had to call the repairman. I’m done with Korean products. Currently in the market for a new tv and I’m going back to a Sony. I keep seeing commenters say “it’s not worth the extra money.” Yes it is.
2 of my friends bought Hyundais (a Sonata and I think the other was an Excel) 30 years ago. Those things were POS. However the Hyundais of today aren’t the same as they were 30 years ago. It’s nice to see the improvement in the brand. If I ever were to buy an Asian vehicle, I would go back to Japanese cars though…like you said, it’s probably a generational or cultural thing.

As an integrator, we used to use Sony TVs almost exclusively. Now, however, we are mostly avoiding them. The reason isn't price or the fact that others have gotten "closer" in quality of picture. The reason is the support given by Sony as far as warranty returns, technical support, etc. We literally had a very high-end 75" OLED Sony die one DAY out of warranty and Sony would not help at all. On the other hand, I've seen LG handle known issues many months outside the official warranty. We have seen tons of power supplies on Sony TVs die an early death. Frequently, the ethernet port just doesn't work after a while and we have to switch to WiFi. That has been going on since the Bravia D series TVs and still happens - so much so that we plan on it during the install by pre-programming WiFi settings even when the wired ethernet is being used so we can easily talk the customer on making the switch. I will say that IP control is better on the Sony products than either the LG or the Samsung, but both LG and Samsung are usable now and improving. Generally, LG and Samsung IP control only works well using a wired connection, so that can be an issue. Fortunately, that is not the case with Sony as the WiFi IP control still works well (luckily, since we almost always have to switch them eventually).

This is exactly why I don't buy Samsung TVs. Samsung even stated that if it was a manufacturing defect, they would NOT extend the warranty.
Not only that, but because they do NOT have any service centers in my area, it would cost more than what I paid for the TV to ship it to their service center for diagnoses, let alone their diagnoses fee.
Meanwhile, Sony has a service center in the nearest town, and they haven't yet charged me any diagnosis fees for products that I've sought repairs on.

I would love to see Sony get back into making computers. The VAIO brand was awesome, just too expensive. If they can bring VAIO back without being ridiculously expensive vs other prebuilts using the same parts, they would kill the market especially since a lot of prebuilts now are very "ricer" designed (ricer = flashy car that doesn't have any performance) their sleek design would really fit the bill for the majority of people out there who dont want flashy RGB computers. With that in mind, they could bring us gaming monitors with that sleek design (which would be epic) as we would then get raw performance. The fastest display technology with amazing image quality with that instant pixel response of OLED and instant input lag from being a computer monitor. Sony could do so much, they just need someone with the "dream" to push the company forward. One mistake is that they keep focusing on wireless headphones lately. There hasn't been a new wired headphone in a long time. The Z1R headphones (flagship) and Z2M2 came out like 3-4 years ago! We have had nothing since. I love my Z7M2 headphones (can't afford Z1R) and would love to see what new designs they come up with down the road. But again, they keep focusing on wireless which doesn't tickle my pickle. Generally wireless headphones aren't loud enough for me. I am not deaf, I just prefer my music really really loud.
On the TV side of things, I can't wait to see how their QD-OLED flagship does performance wise and quality wise. Gonna be awesome. I love my Alienware AW3423DW, been watching 4k UHD movies non stop because it looks so damn good.

Sony has a great track record when it comes to quality control.
In the TV market they are indeed never first, but their products are in most ways better than the competition, not by much, but combined with said quality control they have gotten away with charging a premium.
Last year I got a Sony A80J, the competition was a LG C1, I paid a couple of hundred in premium.
Most people online would have said go with the C1, but the upscaling processing on the Sony is what got me to pay said premium.
On native 4k content there isn't much of a difference, but the C1 appears to obtain a "lag" when upscaling, meaning it feels slower, less accurate and at times even blurrier.
I'm sure as years go by the gap will close and most content will be native 4k, but as of right now, it's a big difference to me.
Well worth the premium imo, no regrets (even with QD-OLED releasing)

Their products also have the bare minimum of remote codes (I think they only have EVER made like 3-4 TV remote codes per generation). I can buy two, somewhat different Sony TVs and the remotes just work on either one. Try and compare that to sone other brands; especially if you try to setup a third party remote. You’re going to be trying codes for a while. This never rang more true than when I worked setting up TV and internet services in telecom. There’s something just so nice about how their menus and everything are setup as well. And all of their various products work together so flawlessly with minimal configuration. I purchased a Sony Trinitron back in either 1992 or 1995. It ran like a champ until 2021 when the picture tube started to develop problems. Almost 30 years with the same TV!
    Replaced it with a 43X85K.
The difference between the two is, as expected, huge.
So far, with one small exception, the new TV has been flawless.
Every once in a while, a message will appear saying that the Wi-Fi connection has been lost. Now, the TV is about 20' away from the extender and is connected using 2.4GHz (I reserve 5GHz for computers & similar devices).
The Internet signal is rock solid as no other devices are experiencing disconnections when the message appears.
To be fair, my church has a Samsung 8 Series television that also kept losing Wi-Fi connectivity. The set doesn't flash a message, but I wouldn't be able to check for updates without deleting and adding the Wi-Fi connection. I eventually gave up and ran an Ethernet cable between the TV and the router.
    Haven't had a problem since.
I may go the Ethernet cable route with my Sony if the message keeps popping up.

I’ve admittedly become a bit of a Sony TV fanboy (Xbox > PS 😉), but I don’t regret converting all the TVs in my home to Sony. Paying a premium for a brand I like has never been an issue for me. I don’t recommend them for everyone though. I think it’s great that value brands are also pushing the technology envelope which keeps brands like Sony on their toes.

Still running an XBR8 in good condition (these days less). Sonys first and only build true RGB-LED TV (It had 2 green, one blue and one red LED per cluster) with local dimming from the year 2008. Where the marketing name Triluminos came from. Of course it came with 120HZ true 10 Bit Panel. The only thing that is missing: Smart Connection and 4k. It was and still is an awesome TV.

I recently bought a new Sony Bravia TV to replace my LG and love it! It has 120hz refresh rate and Android interface with tons of customisation. 4k HDR streaming is brilliant. The only downside compared to the LG is that my LG had a 'magic' remote where you could use it to point anywhere on the screen and it would move a pointer like a computer mouse.

While I found the premise of this video to be great and have enjoyed many of your past videos, I feel like you didn’t really answer the question. Two key points that I feel could’ve been brought out is the fact that for years Sony has been applauded for their color accuracy (which was touch upon in a different way), in addition to the acoustic surface audio that’s been available on their recent OLED models. These two points have differentiated Sony from the other brands. This year, while full reviews are not out for all models, it seems that the lines be between video color accuracy are extremely thin. Closer than ever. But I agree with you. One of the main reasons why I have bought many Sony products is because of reliability and quality control. That is worth something for many consumers. And for those who will not spend the extra money on a sound bar, I have not found any other TV from a competing brand that matches the sound level of the acoustic surface audio on Sony‘s OLED models. So if I was the one answering the question, I would say yes, the premium is worth it for better color accuracy, superior audio, and tried and true reliability. This does not mean that the other brands do not make good TVs. Far from it. But there is an overall difference with a Sony product. Just like in the past there was a difference when you were getting one of Panasonic’s higher end TV models as well. In the end, consumers win as brands competing brands make better products. Makes you wonder what a modern Pioneer Kuro Elite would look like! It’s the McLaren F1 of TVs.

One of the most important features I want in a TV - in addition to excellent picture quality - is long-term reliability. I'm not the type of person who buys a new TV every 2 years, so when I make a purchase I want it to last. Unfortunately, this factor can't be evaluated in an initial review. There are some TV brands that look great right out of the box but seem to be assembled with lower-quality components that are prone to breaking down. It's my impression that Sony pays more attention to build quality than other brands, and it costs more to produce that durability. If you plan to keep using your TV for several years, that higher initial investment price saves you money in the long run because you DON'T need to spend extra cash repairing or replacing your TV.

You did not mention that Sony and Vizio are apparently the only two brands where all of their TVs have DTS audio pass through (based on my research). When compared to Vizio, Sony easily wins the build quality and reliability battle.
Samsung and LG don’t offer DTS passthrough at all. Hisense and TCL don’t offer it across their entire model line.

I can literally match the s95b color if i decide to use the extra settings when comparing the two lol.
