  • We are going to take a look at both of these technologies from ‪@sonyelectronics‬ , which is by far and away, our favorite video company at Audio Advice. First, we will get into the basic pros and cons of each technology, then we take a closer look at some of the individual models to help you make a better decision for your needs and environment. With new TVs that use QD-OLED, and Mini LED technologies, there are even more choices today, but this could make the decision about which one to buy more confusing.

As a rule of thumb, LED-type TVs with full-array backlighting deliver a very impressive picture and typically cost a little less than an OLED TV of the same size. This type of TV can deliver more light output and is better suited for a room where you can not fully control the lighting. OLED TVs generally offer the best blacks and contrast but require a darker room to fully experience these benefits. If you want the very best picture and your viewing occurs in a dimly lit or a dark room, OLED is traditionally the best choice if it fits your budget. However, now that new panel technologies are on the scene, if you can step up to the cost of the new OLED, QD-OLED or Mini LED Master Series models, light becomes a bit less of an issue.

Last December I purchased a 65” Sony A80J OLED television. I’m a Sony guy and believe they make the best products you need. Been buying Sony for decades and this television gives you the best picture you can buy. Nothing against the other manufacturers, many may prefer the LG or Samsung models, but for pure picture quality you’ll never regret getting a Sony.

Z9D Owner here. Sony has definitely stepped up it's picture quality in both it's OLED and LED models. I realize this is a video about picture quality/differences in technologies but another area Sony is heads above other brands is in the audio systems of it's displays. Fantastic where one can integrate the Tv's audio system into taking the place of a center speaker in a audio system such as a surround sound system. 👍

I think the market is quite tight among the big companies producing television. It gets interesting when you look into it and find out L.G are producing screens for Sony and they are tweaking them up. Makes you wonder who else is supplying parts to competitors and so on.
    I still have Two Sony’s at home , started in 1984 and now have a HD and 50” - 4K A80J.

8 years ago I spent a month’s salary on a 58 inch LED flat screen television. It was the absolute pinnacle of the manufacturers range. After 8 years trouble free service, it developed an annoying intermittent fault. My local, independent dealer, advised that due to the advancement in flat panel technology I would do well to update, rather than repair. He sold me a 65 inch OLED television manufactured by the same Japanese Company as my outgoing LED set. He strongly advised I don’t go with the top of the range model, as I’d done 8 years previously, the extra performance wasn’t worth the extra expense.
I took his advice. I had worries, after watching many OLED V LED comparisons, I wondered if brightness may be an issue in my medium to large, well lit lounge.
So, I paid less than half of what I’d paid for my 58 inch LED 8 years ago for an 2021 entry level, premium 65 inch OLED. My dealer matched the price of the High Street dealers and On-line competitors, plus, he delivered and installed at no extra cost. Let me assure you, there are absolutely no issues with brightness. The contrast ratio is outstanding and the picture is presented in the most natural way I’ve witnessed on any set. The audio reproduction isn’t the best, but my dealer told me that, knowing I had a next level hifi system, which he plumbed it into. I could have paid 50% more for the same set equipped with a 130 watt Dolby Atmus system, but it wouldn’t have matched the performance of my rig.
I’m not a gamer, so can’t comment on it’s capabilities and performance in that respect, but popular opinion is that LG are the go to sets for gamers.

    • @andriod3000
      @andriod3000 2 года назад +1

there is still an inherent risk of image retention due to the nature of oled, QD OLED helps with this due to removal of the white subpixel, however you still need to keep all "screen maintenance" settings on, if ur really worried about it most retailers like bestbuy and costco offer 5 year warranties iirc.

    • @AudioAdvice
      @AudioAdvice  2 года назад +3

There is some risk, but it has gotten much better if you turn on the screen saver mode. The biggest risk is leaving a news channel on all day with the line that stays in the same spot. Some of the newer TV's will slightly move the image to reduce burn in chances. Thanks for watching

I am with you on the idea of Sony being the best. I am a senior and still have my Sony Bravia 32 inch XBR9 in the living room. Still runs perfect. Its now 13 years old !!! No issues and I have always loved the picture. Being older than you I have a much longer view that I have seen of Sony over the years. Its always been the same with them. Amazing pictures and quality in the build involved. I am not saying its not possible to get a bad one but I think the odds favor success with Sony. My sister also has a Sony Bravia she picked up second hand. Its even older than mine and works great to this day. My mom also had a Sony. Her's is about 11 years old and its the same story. No issues. I really have to compliment your command and presentation on the current Sony choices of tech. You know your stuff. There are fans out there that do enjoy what some of the Chinese makes have to offer such as Hissense and TCL are products made in China. They appear to offer a lot of value for the money. I do have friends that enjoy them. But.....If you are someone that buys a TV and has it for years I wonder how the makes from China will hold up over the years. Time will tell.

I almost regret buying my Sony A80J. It's really nice but to get decent brightness I have to crank brightness and peak luminance all the way up but that just makes me worry more about burn in. And it's STILL not as bright as a modern LCD.
Bottom line is I think I notice the loss of brightness more than the increase in contrast.
OLED has been a huge marketing success and TV reviewers have gone along for the ride. It feeds into humans' desire to think things are advancing and improving. But with OLED, it can be argued you're actually taking one step forward and two steps backward. It can be further argued that FALD LCD is actually the better compromise between brightness and contrast--and can be had for less.
Even QD-OLED, while improved over standard OLED, seems to still lag far behind in brightness according to the Rtings numbers on the new Samsung QD-OLED.
Wake me up when we get to MicroLED?

Do you think these type of modern LCD panels provide sufficient enough improvements that I could overlook *potentially* worse black levels? I'm kind of overlooking OLED purely due affordibility and wanting to prioritise a larger screen size without breaking the bank.

I finally upgraded from a beloved 1080p Pioneer plasma. It had a non fatiguing natural picture that led panels couldn’t match. The built in sound of the Pioneer was unmatched as well. That said, the new Sony A90k OLED picture is far superior and the blacks are better. The sound however even with the built in sub, is not as good as the old Pioneer. The Sony sound is better than others but not great. I like the google interface of Sony TVs, feel its better than Samsung or LG IMO. The Samsung remote with the cursor makes me crazy, no thanks. A Sony sound bar is next, only because they integrate so well with the tv. I also just picked up a small 42” 80k led and it looks great for a cheap tv.

You can't really say which one is better. I think it depends on your daily use case. OLED TV's are fantastic in dark room settings. LED is great in a lighted room setting because some of them are really bright TVs and can overcome the bright lights. I have both and I like both technologies. I think it boils down to personal choice and use case.

There is no Sony A90 series and A95 series available in India. Only A80 TV sets are available in Sony OLED. Bought a 55 inch A80J couple of months back and I already see a vertical thin black strip/line on the display whenever I am watching any content. This black vertical strip on the display developed within 2 months of buying the TV. When I contacted the Sony service center here in Bangalore, India they said the display has a 2 year warranty, hence they will replace the faulty one with a new display. I was furious that I received a defective TV set even after paying the so called "Sony tax" (additional charge due to brand value) and told the service guy to either replace the TV itself with a new one, not just the display or give me my money back so that I can go buy an LG Oled instead. I fumingly told him all this huge hype around the brand Sony and their quality but the display won't even last a couple of months, what a joke this is. After a couple heated discussions with Sony team over phone calls, because I was persistent that it's either a new TV set or a full refund, I won't be settling for just a display replacement no matter what, they agreed to take back my A80J and said they will replace it with the latest A80K (which I wasn't expecting, I was thinking I would only get another A80J)!

Excellent video as always. Have a quick but not simple question I believe: First the question, then some background to better explain our situation:
My wife and I LOVE to watch movies and sincerely preffer an OLED panel, but the Bravias are a bit expensive for us now, so, we're considering buying a Full Array LED from Sony.
Question is, we know they can't deliver perfect inky blacks, but, are the truly that far away?
I've been a Sony fan my entire life, from the Walkman, Discman, TVs, Playstation, Home Theaters, Xperias, you name it. Last TV I bought before moving in to Europe was an LG B1 OLED because it was almost impossible to get a Bravia at a decent price in the country where I was living, and even though I was hurt by no getting a Bravia, I truly enjoyed the experience of perfect contrast ratios.
Now, in our new home, with my wife we encountered an issue, since we are restarting our life again, we decided to buy good things but not spend as much as we could, just in case, we're still getting used to the new habits, job and all. So, we bought another LG this time around, an OLED with an amazing offer. Sadly, the panel lasted just for two weeks. So, we got our money back and we're deciding what to do.
Are we going to see the difference? Is it going to be that much worse? I just can't believe how amazing an OLED is when viewing in a dark room, the image is just floating there in front of you.
So, yeah, hope you can answer me and give me some guidence. Thanks in advance.

    Well done.
As a Techy and previously a TV Repairman who was a Sony dealer, I have a suggestion.
When you are listing the features, like HDMI 2.1, I'd highly suggest that you also mention that the tuner, for off-air reception, supports both the older (currently used) ATSC 1 and the new standard, ATSC 3.0 (NextGen).
Many may not realize that while many do use Cable boxes for TV viewing, there is a huge number of
"Cable Cutters" who use antennas to received TV channels off the air FOR FREE and the HD is UNCOMPRESSED like cable company have.
Also, ATSC 3.0, while in its infancy, is a far superior system over ATSC 1 and more people will receive more channels easier.
I know that for many people, this is now a must-have. It sure is in our home, because we dumped cable over 10 years ago and we haven't looked back. We've saved 10s of thousands of dollars by doing so.
Just a suggesting. I mean, ya might as well cover all possibilities for everyone. 😁👍

The Sony A80K TV itself is OK,, but the remote SUUCKKS!! It eats batteries at an incredibly ludicrous pace - I have to replace the batteries every other week - and this isn't even a backlit remote!!
No wonder Samsung went with a remote that can be recharged numerous ways!! For a TV that cost $3,300.00, this is completely UNACCEPTABLE!!

Sorry to hear of your remote troubles. You should reach out to the dealer you purchased the Sony from. We have not seen your problem and have sold a lot of those sets. It sounds like you have a bad remote.

Do not buy the Sony Bravia TV with a 5 year extended warranty like l did. The Bluetooth connection on the TV stopped working in February 2021. Sony had the main board and the Bluetooth board replaced for me under the 5 year warranty. I still cannot connect my Sony headphones via Bluetooth to the TV. Sony now are not interested and are not replying to my e-mails. They keep asking me the same questions and then pass me onto another assistant. They hope I will go away and stop complaining but I will not. Very poor after sales service. DO NOT BUY FROM SONY

@@AudioAdvice numerous times. They just don't want to know believe me I'm telling the truth. So to use Bluetooth I had to buy a 4k firestick and attach it to my TV
