I was 17 years old at that event & when Garlits shaved his beard, standing on the hood of his push truck , I was about 12 feet in front of him !unbelievable memory 👍
I was 5 in 1965 and 9in 1969 , and years yater got to ride with my cousin in his 1969 Camaro after he got it ready to run a 13 second 1/4 mile on the dragstrip , complete with drag slicks , narrowed rear dive axle and Wheeler bars , beefed up brakes , roll cage ,and 4 point safety harness , talk about a fun ride , that will put you back in your seat tight
@@supertubr No this was a quick run in a tiny town and right back to my cousins garage, the car was no longer street legal for the road , it was for NHRA Dragstrip racing
I feel your pain, mate. From what I can find, we finally got a 7.99 from a local, here in Australia in 1969. That's not to say that the fuellers did not have us in a frenzy with deafening sound (at the time) and tyres smoking through the traps in the years prior. Track prep and slider clutches are for the competitors, not the crowd... 😆
Interesting to see 'the Snake', at 9m02s, parked deep in the staging area, heating the tyres, whereas most others, including the finalists, seem to stage straight after firing up. Great footage, thanks for posting. ✌
My dad graduated high school in 65 and attended this in 67 (for a perspective on his age and view). He said the State Police were in high attendance at the Nationals back then because of all the rowdiness and all kinds of non-sense at the campgrounds and parking lots. He said it was a wild, wild event besides the drag racing.

That Warren/Prudhomme match bears close watching especially immediately off the line. Near lane from this angle seems to veer hard right before The Snake swerves left. A duel in the truest sense of the word.
Looked to me like Prudhomme got the jump at the light while Warren lost traction veering the rear of his car to the right smoking the tires. Prudhomme opposite dug in to the left and almost collided with Warren after crossing the center line and had he not left when he did, that probably would have happened. So much happening in such few seconds.
Thanks for posting this great race. Attended my first race in 64', at 6 years old, and continue racing to this day. And although I am in awe of the technological advancement of my Sport (and ever lower ET's and increasing MPH of top fuel & funny car), in my opinion....the 60's and 70's was the "Golden Era". A time when with a bit of money, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears....you could put together a competitive fuel car with minimal, if any, sponsorship.
This was when drag racing was fun.you could bring your chick ,wife and family for a few dollars and the food grub was great and cheap too. Today they fucking hijack you at the gate and bring your own food because they hijack you there too! And the cars are ugly now and who gives a shit about the 300mph speed anyways? The NHRA ruined a great American pop culture sporting event !
Today just cannot compare, by a longshot.

That is a great memory for sure as it drew quite a crowd. Thanks for sharing!

@@SeniorCajun3 agreed! To a common person, a 13 second ride will wake you up fast.

Back when 1/4 mile was 1/4 mile. The 7-second barrier was a big deal when Big Daddy Garlits broke it.
Uncle Ben is still shifting his 1967 Z-28 down the 1/4 mile 😎
Thats great to hear👍
Such an extremely cool vintage motor sports treasure!!! 😊
It sure is!
"Big Daddy " was already a legend and the progresss in this sport was staggering ! We couldn't get anywhere near this in the UK .....fabulous !

What's worse than the NFL...(national phag league )... Everything is being ruined.. and it's all the DEMOC RATS fault !.. at least in my opinion.
This is definitely better.
James, you shouldn't of sold your tires to big, it cost ya,
1965 to 1969 the muscle car years on my the road and drag racers were even faster
definitely some innovative years for the big 3 👍
MAGA!!!
And today, none of these guys would make the Sunday show.

Cheers Frank! You're very welcome!
