While I obviously don't know for sure about the production of the game, they could've been animation tests from Disney before they finalized the look of the sprites.
I wanted to write this on Twitter, but I imagine it'd look awkward to read this, spread out in a bunch of tweets… So I was recently playing this build, and I accidentally did a glitch that crashed the game. It was in the Can't Wait stage. Now usually, there's a restricted box that prevents you from going way too out of bounds in the normal platforming levels, notably when you hold the R button to go up to the top of the level. In the Can't Wait level, bounce on any of the rhino heads, and as long as Simba has reached the trigger point that will only be disabled once he makes contact with a monkey, move him away from that monkey with the L buttton. While Simba is in that trigger point, he is unable to interact with any and all collision with the level, and in turn, the contained box as well, so now Simba will be falling forever, unless you keep him vertically levitated in camera-view, with the R button, as previously mentioned. The camera still won't follow him above/below the contained box however, and after like, 2 - 5 seconds of being above camera-view, the game will instantly bug out and the VRAM will just go apeshit, though the music seems to continue just fine. I got scared and reset it after not even 3 seconds upon impact; So if anybody else wants to try it, be my guest.
Interesting! Yes, I remember, in the manual that came with the SNES game, the "Hakuna Matata" level was referred to as "Willow Cascade". I guess they swapped it before release and didn't change it in the manual. Same with "Hyena Lairs" instead being "Simba's Return" in the game.
I have a theory for the “Who Turned OFF The Fax Machine” message. Someone at Virgin turned off the fax machine when it should have been on, so some of Disney’s rough animations weren’t showing up when expected. (Although final animation cels were probably physically delivered to Virgin to scan in-house, there’d be no reason not to just fax the roughs out of convenience.) The dev tasked with implementing those roughs left the placeholder message to signal to everyone else on the team why those roughs weren’t there and to shame whoever shut off the fucking fax machine. lmao
I just can't wait to be king music sounds near complete. But it has that little weird sound. 5:10 I just can't wait to be prepared. Young Simba has a different design in the stampede level. Skeletal Adult Simba lol, I guess they were still developing his complete sprite.
The AMIGA final version is a really early proto for the game as a whole. It's missing half the game although the characters are filled in at that stage on that version.
The beta graveyard looks like something from Earthworm Jim... and the music doesn't suit it in the slightest! Love that subliminal message at 15:49, though.
you have to admit the title screen on this is impressive despite Kinc and used the first part of circle of life before it cut off actually sounds clear for an snes game but the rest is..
Yeah if we ended up with that as the title screen (besides "Kinc" and the sudden sound cut-off obviously), I don't think anyone would mind even if the final version was overall more detailed.
Pressing select in the beginning of the title screen will spawn Simba. He will fall off screen though. It will also cause another sample to play and the game will soft lock.
8:32 Mufasa: *Dead*
Scar: "Kill him."
Simba: I just can't wait to be king
Plays distorted version of i cant wait to be king
I love how most of the characters in this proto are still in the "programmer art" phase. Really funny to see everyone as basically stick figures.

@@colindavis7854 The placeholder sprite @15:49 could support that theory.

To me they look like more professional animations, despite them being stick figures.
9:14 That timing with the music :D
Max Headroom I see what you did there

Nice find! Make a video please 😁
This is so cool, but the bug toss was hella terrifying, they both look dead, and who turned off the fax machine?!
Pumba looks like hes eating a body
@@KaitiLuvsU13 I looked very carefully at the sprite that Pumba eats, and I realized it's one of the giraffe heads from the second level
@@amadeusthecat69 well that explains bit

I know they used the "Hyena Lairs" name in the Game Boy version.

That Timon and pumbaa bonus stage looks like the game boy/NES versions, and the Stampede level looks like the amiga version. Interesting....
Only thing in Stampede level in Beta is Simba looks more scared and no music,
I just can't wait to be king music sounds near complete. But it has that little weird sound.

HyperSonicXtreme level looks like Green Hell with an upbeat song how fitting lol

Not to mention the wall climbing (especially the rising lava part in Elephant Graveyard) is REALLY SLOW!!
Rob is a royal pain in the butt and Kevin is choosing Rob's side, which means no more rides!
11:34 Our beloved simba took one too many trips to the amigara fault.

@@IsmailofeRegime it would been really impressive if they used an vocal verison of Circle Of Life with the red sunset screen in the beta
I love The Lion Kinc
Interestingly, the Master System port of the game is based on this prototype.
Bonus level in this prototype looks to creepy for me : Pumba eating turtles, giraffe's head and message "WHO TURNED OF THE FAX MACHINE"😅😅😰
11:35
Mufasa: "You have forgotten who you are....I mean LOOK at yourself!"
This is creepy D:
15:42 I almost expected a jumpscare.
I wonder if an Aladdin Proto exists and if it had the sword or not in the early stage.
Pressing select in the beginning of the title screen will spawn Simba. He will fall off screen though. It will also cause another sample to play and the game will soft lock.
11:48 I recognize that background from Brutal Mario!
Skeleton dog in adult simba stages
15:50 Who Turned OFF The Fax Machine.
so the snes port was originally going to have the iconic opening to circle of life as title music?
I'll just say it; This looks like a prototype that you'd find screenshots of in a magazine (take Super Mario World and Starfox 2 for examples).
Man does the Stampede level look TERRIFYING!
Prince Jamie The 7th no sounds and simba is different it is scary

WHO TURNED OFF THE FAX MACHINE.

who turned off the fax??
AAArrrtvvv This is now the greatest mystery in the world of game protos.
OMG why is Gannon eating giraffe heads and who turned off the fax?
Wow was that audio at the beginning legit? It was crystal clear!
What is the menu pointer? A bloody hedgehog?
Porcupine, like in the first level.
Ah yes The Lion Kinc my fave movie.
Jisney's The Lion Kinc?
Pumba is very creepy in this beta
Hmmm, Maybe you can find Jungle book prototype? :D
How did you do the level select?
The graveyard level looks like the lava level in the aladdin genesis game
good stuff
